No Jerry Hairston For Us

Pravda, Cincinnati edition

CINCINNATI -- The Reds have reached an agreement with free-agent infielder/outfielder Jerry Hairston Jr. on a one-year deal worth a guaranteed $2 million, a baseball source told MLB.com on Tuesday.

I don't particularly care either way, but since it seems like Hairston was the top utility infielder on Zduriencik's winter list, I guess we'll have to set our sights on someone else, as I doubt the team has enough confidence in Reegie Corona to run with him as the Opening Day backup. Guys like Alex Cora, Craig Counsell, and Alex Cintron are still available, and that's just among the free agents - there are trade possibilities as well, and Dave's recommendation of Alfredo Amezaga was a good one. I'd say more but listing off the names of six different utility players in sequence causes my brain to shut off from disinterest.

Ah hamburguers
You forgot to mention our favorite hometown hero is still avalible

Craig Counsell is actually a little interesting and maybe underrated as a utility man (although probably too old/slow).

I would imagine him as our Player A

If we made it to the World Series. Willie would be jealous.

FREE WILLIE!!!

I mean, according to WAR, he was a bargain last year!

//not completely joking, actually…

WFB man, WFB.

I mean, he’s not going to get a full time job anywhere else, is he? He might be willing to resign here, for pretty much what he’s worth. It will make the fans happy (not that important, but still), and I’m pretty sure Wakawaka will use him more intelligently than Mac/Grover.

Just throwing it out there…

Nobody seems interested in Willie at all

I’m not sure if it’s sad or hilarious

Four hours later this comment is now hilarious.
For reasons that have nothing to do with baseball statistics

I’d rather sign a guy like Craig Counsell or Alex Cora than WFB.

I don’t want to deal with another year of undeserved Bloomquist love from the media & fan base. Besides, the guy was pretty open about not wanting to be a Mariner anymore. Nuts to him.

When he finds how tough it is outside the mariners org

for no-talent players like himself…he’ll come back.

I love Zduriencik and all

but holy shit I want to care about something other than utility players and bullpen reclamation projects.

.

I'm guessing that's about the only name you'll see this year

Hickey has an article up about the Walker signing that states the M’s goal is to trim payroll by 20% this year which means pretty much they’re done signing anyone for multiple millions because of the arby cases. Its not completely ruled out of course but he also states that he needs to get at-bats to Clement and Wlad this year. But he’s still trying to work some things just takes two to tango.

I am so excited to watch him play.
What about this FA infielder goes by the name of Bloomquist..

I wonder if he is on the radar.

(god i hope not)

lllllllllaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate
Here's a question

What sort of difference in runs would Jerry Hairston have over your average Reegie ‘My’ Corona type? Any? Significant? Enough to care about?

If we use Marcels to predict his hitting, my guess is he's about 0.5 WAR.

Corona is kind of an unknown right now to me. He’ll probably be a pretty lousy hitter but might be pretty good with the glove. Its hard to say. Probably -1 to +0.5 WAR. I’d guess since each player will probably see very little playing time the difference between the two will be fairly negligible. Corona might be able to play a better SS which might actually make him a nicer player to have around in case we need to put Yuni out to pasture if his range continues to plummet.

Well there goes 09

may as well hand the division title to the Angels now.
