is that apparently not only do people prefer the Angels to the Yankees, given the vote spread they prefer the Red Sox to the Yankees.

Honestly, I’ve had good conversations with true Yankee and Red Sox fans. It’s just the bandwagoners that make me hate either team. And the Red Sox bandwagon is bigger, louder, more annoying, and way more whiny. They still think they’re the lovable under dogs.

The Mets thing is due to a number of things, including Felix’s injury and the pedestal they perch upon only to be knocked off it. Further, my closest baseball-aware friend is a Mets fan. There are probably teams I should dislike more, but aren’t really aware enough of them yet.

I’m in Cleveland for college right now, and really don’t mind the Tribe—so long as they’re not playing the Mariners. In fact, I’ll root for them as long as it isn’t detrimental to Seattle…

On the other hand, at the beginning of the ’08 season, when the Mariners were in town (and it was like 40 degrees out…BRRRR), I went to a game and cheered lustily for Ichy and co…
The stadium was practically empty due to the weather, so it was really fun standing up and cheering for the Mariners while the stadium was truly dead silent…

Cleveland is legitimate.

There are a number of incidents between the Indians and the M’s over history that really ought to constitute a rivalry.

‘95 playoffs, Randy Johnson/Kenny Lofton incident, Arthur Rhodes/Omar Vizquel incident, one day in August 2001, the ’01 playoffs, Mike Hargrove’s Last Stand, and a couple others that I can’t think of right now.

Them jerking us around after the snow days is the most recent.

As for the ‘01 playoffs, so what? We beat them, last I checked. Omar Visquel was a whiny bitch, but that’s Omar Visquel, not the whole team. Don’t remember the Johnson/Lofton incident, but I was 7 in ‘95, so perhaps I’m just too young to know…?

We beat them, but that series never should have gone five games.

Good rivalries have ups and downs; you don’t just beat the snot out of the other team all the time (or get the snot continually beaten out of you). The Johnson/Lofton incident was ’97, I think, after the Unit threw a couple high and tight. Benches cleared, players were ejected.

Likewise, whilst Boston and NY may have the arrogance, I don’t really have particular incidents to reference.

That said, given the little history I am aware of, I’m genuinely surprised that there isn’t a bigger Cleveland rivallry, as per Danny’s post below…

It is a given that I dislike both teams, but my thought is that an Angels win further legitimizes our division. Losing the division to the eventual World Series Champions is somehow more palatable than losing to a team that is swept in the first round.

Of the 3 douchebags, it goes, in order of personal favorite:

I dont like any of them, but the Angels are more annoying than anyone in baseball, in terms of playing style. So I put them in back. But the Red Sox do everything the Yankees do and yet theyre portrayed as good guys while the Yankees are considered villains. Its a double standard that I cant stand. That double standard is more annoying than the Angels’ playing style, thus the Red Sox fall in last.

I look at the Yanks and Red Sox as I do Duke and North Carolina in basketball. I dont like either team, but since there is a double standard with Duke and UNC, I like Duke more.

Plus Ken Hamlin almost died a few years ago and ESPN didn’t have it on the front page, yet there were two articles on the a Red Sox bench player getting put on the 15 day DL.

Maybe the Yankee hatred is just traditional, but I was pretty much born hating the Yankees.

The Angels I have learned to hate more and more through Lookout Landing, although I arguably hate the Athletics more because of all those years that we could not win in the Coliseum.

I cannot shake my hatred of the A's either. I just don't see the Angels surpassing them for me.

I went to college in SoCal

Undergrad from ’97-01, then grad school and a couple years down there working…

From ‘97 to ’01 Edison Field was full of M’s fans like Safeco is full of Red Sox fans when they come to down. The M’s were good. The M’s had Ichiro. I went and caught Freddie’s start before and post 9/11 and there were tons of M’s fans in the house for both.

Then the Angels won the World Series and all the douche-bag OC dads with their braddy foul-mouthed kids started showing up for games. F’ing bandwagon loving, Kobe fondling, Carrol slurping lot that made the games the M’s won so much sweeter.

So I hate the Angels. I hate them and most of their fans.

And I still voted for them over the Yankees

I hate Jeter and Posada. I hate that Jeter has been lionized for being the best SS ever when really he might be one of the better 2B ever playing out of position at SS.

I hate that the Yankees went and bought 3 Type A free agents last year.

I hate the fact that the Yankees (and the Red Sox) are going to be the cause of Felix leaving the Mariners. The Angels won’t sign him to a $250M/10 year deal. But you know the Yankees would do it if Boston offered $220/9.

I hate the fact the Yankees prospects are all labeled as untouchable when they’re not better than any other team’s prospects.

I hate the Yankee fans who start talking about how many World Series “we’ve” won, when they weren’t alive for most of them.

I hate the fact the Yankees (and Red Sox) are shoved down our throats by ESPN and the national news media even when there are more compelling stories/teams elsewhere.

Maybe people have forgotten how terrible it is when the Yankees are good because they’ve lost the last few years, but good God, I don’t want to go back to them being in the World Series every year.

Even if it means I have to vote for the F’ing Angels.

My hatred for the Yankees

It softened as a result of a trip to Yankee Stadium last year. They played the M’s, actually. It was the game when Putz blew a 6 out save, if I recall correctly. Anyway, I was in the infamous section 39, where all the die hard season ticket holders sit and I’ve never enjoyed a game more in my life. They were very knowledgeable and all around likable people.

If anyone goes to the stadium, I recommend sitting in that section (I believe everyone is still in about the same spot, obviously in a new building).

Meanwhile, I live in LA and my hatred of OC sports increases every day.

I still don’t like the yanks, but they are ahead of Boston and Anaheim now.

Because they beat us in 2001, when we were the best team and deserved to win it.
Other playoff losses make me hate the team that beat us, but none as much as that ever will, because we actually deserved to go all the way that year.

Many others hateteams for winning or spending a lot of money, I hate teams purely for them beating the Mariners in key situations. (I also like teams that lose to us at important times. For example, I liked the Angels more after they blew their lead and lost to us in 95)

I respect your right to do it, but I just could never do it. Red Sox fans are far worse than Yankees fans. Also, the Yankees have had a good deal of home grown players—Posada, Jeter, Cano, Melky, Gardner, Rivera, Hughes, Wang before he went kablooey—so the “buying world series titles” argument isn’t exactly valid. Plus I’m sick of people hating on A-Rod. Especially my dad’s schpeel of “No team that has A-Rod will ever win a world series, he’s a curse.” Fuck it, A-Rod is a great player, deserves a ring, and is far less douchey than the media portrays him.

The Angels, on the other hand, are our biggest rivals who have won games in extremely frustrating fashion against us for years now. Their fans don’t show up to the ballpark, their ballpark is ugly and rat infested, and the few fans that really follow the team are total douchebags. New York fans are just douches like New Yorkers. Angels fans are far more annoying.

I want the Yankees to win it all this year, honestly. And I hate the Yankees. But they’re at least interesting, and really, fuck Torre getting another ring, and both Colorado and Philly are boring. Plus, I like Girardi. Go Yanks!

Maybe "deserve" isn't the perfect word, but I agree with Brett.

To be that good and never win a championship surely gnaws at players for the rest of their lives. They’re competitors, and it must suck to never win it all due to forces outside your control. I’d like to see Alex win a World Series. And I guess I’d prefer that it happens this year, since I don’t care about any of the teams left anyway.

I could maybe see saying a team may have deserved it, but a single player is part of a whole. Alex orchestrated a trade to New York so in reality he has had more control than many great players have had in terms of even getting the opportunity to play for a ring.

I do feel sorry for fans that never get to experience a championship and I also feel sorry for players that do not get to experience that feeling. But deserve is just the wrong word.

Living in New Jersey (...yeah), the Yankees fans are far and away the worst

Basically, every single douchebag is intertwined with Yankeedom. Their fans are pompous assholes who feel like it’s their divine right to win, and if they don’t win, they say 26. A lot. 90% of the fans can’t name the starting nine and/or the starting rotation. Not to mention, I still hear shit about 2001. It’s been eight years, and they didn’t even fucking win the World Series, but the ‘educated’ ones who actually watch the team always find it hilarious.

Nine years is about four thousand too few for these fucktards. I want to see them lose as early as possible, but at the same time I would be fine with a Philadelphia victory in the World Series over the Yankees because it would be much more salt on a gaping wound that, quite frankly, can’t hurt enough.

Fuck the fucking Yankees.

I hate both teams.

I chose the Yankees because I can’t stand all the fair weather fans that have no connection to New York but wear their Yankees gear to Safeco. Also, when A-Rod left I cursed his soul to forever wander MLB without ever winning a World Series ring, thus I cannot ever wish for the Yankees to win unless it somehow benefits the Mariners. Is my hate for A-Rod irrational and my curse stupid? Probably yeah, but I don’t really care.

Don’t get me wrong, I hate both teams. My only reasoning in the vote was who I figured had a better shot of winning the world series. I understand it’s obviously a small sample size, but I still figure the Yanks have a better chance of taking the series, ergo I want them to lose.

Angels vs. Yankees vs. Red Sox

New York-It may be childish and naive, but if a team comes in with such an advantage (such as spending twice as much as anyone else), I can’t root for them. I don’t believe it’s destroying the game or any shit like that, I just believe it gives them a huge advantage that I will always root against. Also, yes, my deep-seated hatred of the Yankees has to do with my childhood coinciding with their dynasty. I dislike A-Rod, Teixiera, and can’t develop any particular attachment to their huge contract stars. I love Mariano Rivera. Their diehard fans are bearable, their bandwagon fans are generally kind of innocuous.

Boston-Dislike Pedroia, Youk, and Papelbon more than anyone on Yankees or Angels. Don’t like many players on the Sox. Talking to many diehard Sox fans, I find them to be quite enjoyable baseball conversationalists, although they are incredibly Sox-centric. Anyone who is a casual fan or bandwagoner, unfortunately, is unbearable.

Angels-Fanbase in general is dumb and they don’t really seem all that interested in baseball, but not as obnoxious as the Red Sox fanbase at large. Now that K-Rod is gone, I don’t really hate any of their players. I can’t seem to dislike Hunter or Vlad. Their style of play is annoying, they always seem to be lucky, in our division so it’s easy to hate them.

Overall, I don’t care much either way which of the three teams win. They are my least favorite teams. I voted Angels because I want an all-LA series, and because I find this incarnation of the Yankees to be a bit boring for whatever reason.

Having been to both Boston and New York 10+ times for games in my life

I can say, without question, the Red Sox fans are nicer, more intelligent, and just better as a whole then Yankee fans. I’m of course talking about the core fans in their respective cities, but it’s not even close. Yankees fans are dipshits and retards, and the worst I’ve run into in all of sports. Red Sox fans (and of course, I’m talking about the ones within Boston) are actually rather tempered.

I always want to see the Mariners beat the Angels, but they only deserve special attention due to being in our division. Yes, the Rally Money is effing stupid and should die, but it’s a decently run team, despite the lame fans.

Boston: They really don’t understand that they’ve basically become the slightly poorer cousins of the Yankees…only with more obnoxious fans.

New York: Hate Steinbrenner, hate the money they spend, hate A-Rod, wish I could find a legitimate reason to hate Jeter…

Figure since you guys are calling out the lurker fans, I’ll add my input on the subject.

I have never been a big fan of hating on teams solely because they are in our division. Yes, I hate them if they are preventing us from having a chance at getting to the playoffs, but once the playoffs have started, they really aren’t doing us any harm.

Yes you see occasional Angels fans around, but not NEARLY as much as you see Yankees or Red Sox fans about. In SoCal I am sure that there are plenty of fair weather fans, but unfortunately that is the way that ALL franchises are. Look at how many people started showing up for the Tigers when they started playing well. Same thing with the White Sox in 05. That’s just the way that local area fanbases are. However, the Yankees and Red Sox have the furthest stretching group of bandwagoners, and that makes me angry. I don’t mind fair weather fans, I hate hate HATE bandwagon fans.

The other thing that makes me super frustrated is the amount of money that each of the respective teams spend. I used to not mind the Red Sox so much until they started using the Yankees method of buying players that they wanted because they know no one else has the same cap as they do. The whole thing with JD Drew really pushed me over the edge, I still think that Drew left knowing that the Red Sox were already going to offer him a ridiculous contract that the Dodgers had no chance of matching. Same thing with the posting with Dice-k. This is also the same reason why i hate the Yankees even though they haven’t won recently is because of the outright purchasing of Tex, Sabathia, Burnett, ect. Obviously the A’s haven’t ever bought people to come in and play for them, and i just feel that the Angels’ free agent signings have been less ridiculous, like signing Vlad, Torii and Abreu.

(also, my grandparents are hardcore A’s fans so i will almost always root for the A’s in the playoffs as long as the Mariner’s aren’t in)

Why the Tigers hate?

Tiger hate is waning...

…but it was a lot about spending habits. 2007 and 2008 their salary was ridiculously bloated, what with the signings of Ordonez and Sheffield onto their roster. Also I have a friend that jumped hard on the Tigers bandwagon when they started winning, and that made me angry. But now that friend has moved on to another bandwagon, and the Tigers payroll is starting to sink back into the pack a bit, i don’t hate them so much.

Say what you want, but I don’t particularly hate the Angels when they aren’t causing any harm to us. They manage their team efficiently and make good use of their farm system. Just because they happen to be in our division doesn’t mean I have to hate them (again, unless they are preventing us from doing well). Also, i love love love Vladdy and also have a soft spot for Torii Hunter. There’s just no one on the Tiger’s that I particularly like (except for Verlander, but solely for Fantasy Baseball purposes that you do not want to hear about). Besides, the only teams I really hate come playoffs time are Yankess, Red Sox, Mets, Cubs, a little bit Tigers and a little bit Braves.

For some reason, the Angels have always been a joke to me.

They were supposed to compete for the division in seemingly every year of the late ‘90s, but they would continually have such an injury bug that they never got anywhere close and the only teams that won it between ’95 and ’99 were the M’s and Texas.

I think every time the Mariners have clinched their final playoff berth, it was against the Angels. Obviously, the ‘95 one-game playoff, the M’s beat the Angels to clinch the 1997 division crown, the final two games to take the wild card in 2000, and the game that won the 2001 AL West.

Any time I see that the M’s will be playing against the Angels in the last or second to last series of the year, I’m happy because I feel like it’s going to happen again.

I’ve considered baseball done since the Twins lost. I will happily not turn on the TV from here on out. No matter what, everyone loses, and my TV wouldn’t last an Angels/Yankees series without the remote protruding from the screen anyways.

For what it’s worth, I did the same thing with the Stanley Cup last year. Penguins or Red Wings? Who cares, it’s a travesty either way.

I'm breaking out my Yankees gear this week for sure.

Yankees fans don’t really bother me, and I don’t begrudge the franchise for its success. I would love to have an owner as committed to winning as the Steinbrenners are. Sure, they have a huge financial advantage because of the market they’re in, but what else are they supposed to do? Baseball isn’t fair. I’ve gotten over that.

The Angels just annoy the shit out of me and have for at least the past decade. Maybe it’s the Orange County/pretending to be L.A. thing. They have an air of superficiality that is gross. The constant name- and logo-changing, the hideous fake rocks in center field, the renaming of the stadium every few years, etc. “Angels in the Outfield” pretty much sealed it for me. And that’s before even getting into the slap-happy bunt-and-force-an-error circus that they put on every day. It makes me even angrier that it actually works for them.* They’re frustrating, and they make me very unhappy. That’s about as well as I can say it.

*But to their credit, they actually hit well in 2009.

Aside from that, the Yankees have players that I actually really like. I love Alex and always have. Sabathia, Swisher, Pettitte, Rivera, etc. There’s not a player on the Angels that doesn’t annoy me. Something comes over me when they put on that uniform. I even hate Vlad, and I shouldn’t.

Finally, I just think that hating the Yankees is too easy. It’s hard not to come across as jealous when complaining about the money that teams spend. I did it for a long time. But in recent years I’ve come to realize that if I owned a team in New York I’d do the exact same thing. I like the owners that see their teams as more than simply a business. It’s your toy and you can do whatever you want with it, but I love the George Steinbrenners/Mark Cubans/Mike Ilitches of the world, who are fans like you and me, just with a lot more money.

(Though I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that Arte Moreno is awesome as well.)

If you hate the Yankees for crushing us one too many times or you just hate the fans, that’s perfectly understandable. The opinion in my last paragraph is pretty much only about the criticism the Yankees get for spending all the money people insist on giving them.

I didn't hate them nearly as much until I moved into Yankee-land.

Now I want to personally strangle about 95% of their fans, and every last NY commentator, starting with TV and working my way down to print.

I start off every day hoping to hear about a dirty bomb being detonated during the game the night before.

The Angels scored 45 more runs than they should have according to Base Runs.

They had a team BABIP of like .332 and a BA/RISP of nearly .300. League averages were .299 and ~.267

The Angels hit well contextually.
