I’m assuming we’re talking about his wOBA as being mostly a platoon. Platoon players with no defensive skill pretty much have to hit like crazy people to be worth having on a contender.
Anything below ~.335-.340 and he's below replacement.
He’s fun to have around and he hasn’t hurt anything this season, but people need to remember that the biggest, most important reason that the team chemistry has improved this year is because the Mariners have a winning record and spent the majority of the season in at least marginal contention.
I'd be good with .320. He's just so lovable

If you are paying someone with such a limited skillset and no defensive value to wOBA .320 chances are you aren't a contending team.
Aaron Campeau - October 2, 2009
I bet a Sweeney hug would change your mind.
w00tah - October 2, 2009
I bet it wouldn't!
Aaron Campeau - October 2, 2009
You are heartless
gregrabble - October 2, 2009
No I just don't think I would like Mike Sweeney personally.
Aaron Campeau - October 2, 2009
I know I wouldn't.
Sec 108 - October 3, 2009
Alright fine, I guess .330 ish is a less stupid choice
gregrabble - October 2, 2009
Don't let anyone change your mind, this isn't a scientific poll
Jeff Sullivan - October 2, 2009
After rethinking it, he's right
gregrabble - October 2, 2009
Over .340

lailaihei - October 2, 2009
At least .330 wOBA sounds about right.
Basically keeping the clubhouse in good shape while pulling his own weight at the plate.
ThundaPC - October 2, 2009
Agreed. I think we can contend with some below average players on the roster, if they fill another role
off the field like Sweeney does.

Aaron Campeau - October 2, 2009
So he's been an average hitter as a DH this year, right?
Isn’t that a replacement level hitter?
joof - October 2, 2009
Err, player.
joof - October 2, 2009
Pretty much, but since he's platooning his value is actually less than that.
lailaihei - October 2, 2009
If we're a contending team the poll states then I don't care who is on it
If Sweeney’s roster spot is the difference between contending and almost contending, then above .340
Corco - October 2, 2009
I read the question as "a team which is constructed with the intention to contend."
But yeah, if Sweeney is irrelevant and there aren’t meaningful upgrades available for his roster spot, I couldn’t care less.
Aaron Campeau - October 2, 2009
The point is that the team in this poll is actually playing for something
Jeff Sullivan - October 2, 2009
The 2009 Mariners are the best team yet.
Mediocre and lovable! Perfect for me. So I want Sweendog to stick around forever.
Eyebrows - October 2, 2009
Now I'm happy for you, and I'm gonna let you finish, but the 2001 Mariners were the best team of all time.
joof - October 2, 2009
NEEDS MORE ALL CAPS.
redwolf75 - October 3, 2009
Depends on if Griffey comes back as a 25th man or not
