Personally, I'm rooting for the Yankees to finish the job in the ALCS. But for those of you who can't understand why any Mariners fan would dare pull for the Angels, know that those people have their reasons, and that their reasons are good.

That was the worst day ever
So much hope was built up that year. We were one of the best (if not the best) teams in the history of baseball and here come the Yankees to ruin our fucking perfect season. That day sealed a lifetime of hatred.
That said, I still can’t root for the Angels on matter of principle. I’d argue that winning another World Series would greatly help the Angels future, and thus help ruin ours moreso than another Yankees win. The more teams win, generally, the more seats they sell and the more money they make. And the more money they make, the more their ownership is willing to invest into payroll. The better free agents, as well as many of the best international signings generally want to go somewhere they can win, sometimes taking less money to do so, so another ring would only help the Angels attract talent. These are obvious upsides that happen to every team who wins but because the Angels are in our division it has a direct impact on our future, moreso than just another Yankees championship.

I couldn't imagine how I would have reacted to this.
I was angry for days when Morrow blew that lead against the Twins in the first series of the season. Same when we blew the huge [7 run?] lead in Anaheim.
But being in the playoffs, in games that really matter, and then losing in that fashion … that would crush me.

The night we lost the series I drove downtown, got insanely high and sat on a bench in front of the Olympia Film Society and stared into space for five hours.
I didn’t get out of bed for two days after I got home. I cried more watching Game 1 of the WS than I did when my girlfriend dumped me a month earlier. That was, by far, the most miserable two weeks of my life.

Which is why when we do get back to the playoffs, I’ll be on the first flight to Seattle, even if I don’t have a place to stay/tickets.

I cried for the entire second half of game 5, the only time I've ever cried due to a sports loss.
After the game was over, I cried some more as I said little thank yous to all the members of that team that I had hung pictures of on my wall. I can’t ever decide what hurt more between the Bernie Williams HR or the Locklear “hold” in the SB but I can tell you that one of them was the single worst moment of my life.

I blame 9/11, I really do.
1. We were in position to rest our starters. 9/11 gave the entire league the opportunity.
2. The Yankee players had extra motivation to succeed. I know it is an intangible thing we cannot measure, but everyone felt bad for New York. That boosted the Yankees’ mentality and hurt everyone else. Yes, the Diamondbacks overcame it in the World Series, but we had to play our elimination games in New York (the Diamondbacks lost all three games they played in New York). We screwed up not winning our games in Seattle, but we didn’t have Schilling and RJ on the mound either.
9/11 also spawned November baseball.

but I agree. we lost all the advantages our record had given us and the Yanks gained tons of momentum with the whole country, sans the Pacific Northwest, pulling for them to win that series.

Well, on the bright side
This series is the one reason I’m glad I didn’t resume watching baseball until about halfway through 2002. Sure, 2001 was a great team, but shit… if I had spent my first season of really loving baseball again watching a true fairy tale season end in unthinkable disaster, would I have gone on watching? I don’t know. And considering how much awesomeness Ichiro and Felix have brought to my life in the years since…. well no, fuck, this just really sucked.
