The Return of Mark McGwire

This should be good.

McGwire: See, what you want to be doing is hitting dingers.
McGwire: When you go up there, first pitch, you're looking dead red so you can hit a dinger.
McGwire: Sometimes you're gonna miss. That's okay. Stick to your guns. There's no more efficient way of scoring than hitting a dinger. That's what we want to be doing.
McGwire: The pitcher might pick up on your strategy. Don't worry about it. He's more afraid of you than you are of him.
McGwire: If he throws you something offspeed, like a curveball, don't be fooled. Just hit it for a dinger.
McGwire: Walks are good too. If the pitcher tries to get you to chase something out of the zone, don't swing at it.
McGwire: You only want to swing at strikes. Take balls. Hit strikes for dingers.
McGwire: Now let's break up and practice. Group A, get in there. I want to see you guys hitting dingers. Group B, practice your dinger swings.
McGwire: Who's first in Group A? Skip? Get in there, Skip.
McGwire: Let's see some dingers!
Schumaker:
Schumaker:
Coach, I don't
McGwire: What're you doing over there?
McGwire: You're standing on the wrong side of the plate. Bat righty.
McGwire: You hit dingers batting righty.

Once again Jeff, you outdo yourself.
This is spectacularly funny.
Great stuff

I was wondering if McGwire learned something in his abysmal 1991, and I wanted to see who the hitting coach was that year. I think, though I’m not 100% certain, that was Reggie Jackson’s sole year in the job. The A’s OBP/OPS/everything tumbled that year, though nobody was impacted more than McGwire. At least McGwire may have a decent example of what NOT to do….

Maybe, but his BABIP was .212 that season
Same as it was in 1989.

And that doesn’t explain his drop in ISO – his only year under .200.
He needed more dingers.

Wikipedia to the rescue!
McGwire stated in an interview with Sports Illustrated that 1991 was the “worst year” of his life, with his on-field performance and marriage difficulties, and that he “didn’t lift a weight” that entire season. With all that behind him, McGwire re-dedicated himself to working out harder than ever and received visual therapy from a sports vision specialist.
I received visual therapy after my marriage difficulties, too.

I call it “porn”.

Also, I'm extremely happy this was posted 162 days before Rob Johnson's first at bat.
We really could have used a hitting coach like this.

We didn’t hit many dingers.

Or walk very much.
Walking doesn't drive in runs like dingers do.
Walking is a totally different form of transportation than driving,

so there you go.

That's because Griffey is the only one on the team that can hit dingers

Everyone else just hits homers.

Are you fucking illiterate?
McGwire: You hit dingers batting righty.
You hit fuck blasts batting lefty.
Not in the AL retard.
What was Mcguire hitting when he played in Oakland then fuckhole?
Didn't see that coming.
Should I be happy about this?
This is like Griffey returning to Seattle except he won't fuck up the team on the field
At least not directly
Did you know that McGwire invented the dinger?
Mark McGwire doesn't want to talk about the past

He wants to talk about hitting dingers

Do you want to know the truth or watch me sock some dingers? Dingers!

THIS IS LITERALLY THE GREATEST NEWS EVER
!!!

I can't stop looking!
It's not unusual.
Totally unrelated, 2010 Albert Pujols will make 2009 Yuniesky Betancourt look like 2009 Albert Pujols.
Glad to see him back in the game; he never deserved to be ostracized.
Is it ostracism if you turn your back on any approaches from baseball?
He is not in the hall of fame
I think it's ostracism

When you bury your head in the sand.

And by ostracized

I meant not just baseball but the fans/media who cheered him on in ’98 without giving a crap what else might have been going on and then turned on the outrage after his appearance at Congress.

"If he throws you something offspeed, like a curveball, don't be fooled. Just hit it for a dinger."

Wlad needed this advice.
Still a chance for Halman!
Letttttttttttttttsssseeeeeeeeeeeee. Open your hips a bit more. Then you'll hit that dinger.

I can't think of any sports figure who's has more mistreatment at the hands of the press
Barry Bonds

Ricky Williams (RB Miami)
Dick Allen

Nope
Ricky Williams definitely has

and I always disliked that guy

Steve Phillips
Steve Phillips deserves what he gets.

It doesn’t matter if he gets it for the wrong thing. He still gets it.

Dennis Rodman
From the presser today

The team anticipated a telephone news conference with McGwire. “By no means is he trying to hide, and by no means are we trying to hide him,” Mozeliak said."
