40-Man Roster Moves

Every so often I'll have a little debate with myself over what I want this blog to be. Do I just write about what I find interesting or relevant, or do I try to make this sort of a one-stop shop for everything any Mariners fan could care about? In other words, where do I set the threshold of significance above which I write, but below which I ignore? I started thinking about this again most recently after the Bruce Hines story came out. I don't care that we fired our third base coach, and I don't think it really matters, but a lot of fans like to be aware of what's going on with the coaching staff, so how do I react? I didn't write anything about Hines, but I still go back and forth.

No matter which way I'm leaning, though, I still wouldn't write about this.

Bryan LaHair, Randy Messenger, Cesar Jimenez, Marwin Vega, and Justin Thomas have been outrighted off the 40-man roster. The first three are minor league free agents. Vega's sticking around. Thomas got claimed by the Pirates. LaHair's nothing, Messenger's nothing, Jimenez is a lefty that struggles against lefties, Vega's nothing, and if Justin Thomas tries really hard he could be the new Randy Keisler. The only reason this is the least bit notable is that the Mariners are now way less smelly. Which, hey, all right.

So um Josh Fields, Nick Hill and maybe Phillipe Aumont will replace them?
No, probably, no.

Fields and Aumont don’t need to be put on yet. Hill, I think, does.

Maybe you could just throw up a FanShot for stuff that's not that big of a deal/you don't care about.

That way those that are interested can still comment and you can still write a blurb if you want, but it’s not as major as a post. Just a thought…

FanShots don't get submitted for distribution or picked up by Google
Because Randy Messenger needs all the Google hits he can get?
It helps him impress 14-year-old girls.
I'm kind of glad they let many of these particular people go, actually

It further illustrates that this front office knows what it’s doing, even though we totally already knew that I can never get enough of it.

Bryan LaHair might be gone!

If Bryan LaHair declares free agency...

who takes the Mike Morse Memorial role?

Could be Nelson

Both would then be the Morse Memorial depth guy for two different orgs.

Navarro now holds that role in AAA, which is almost sad.

I remember when Navarro was a top 10 prospect.

I don’t think he has enough offense to hold down that role though.

Nelson would have to re-sign to hold position too.

I’m thinking Mike Wilson. It depends on if he’s FA eligible, but it makes the most sense to me.

I was going to put Wilson, as he's already done the waived/then re-signed thing,

but I don’t think they’ll keep him if he doesn’t play well this year. He’s more like Wlad than Morse both in skillset and in how the club will likely deal with him.

I don’t want to talk about Navarro being a fucking top 10 fucking prospect and the decision-making fuck-ups that flowed from it. FUCK!
Graham had his Sex Cannon, but as a respectable man with Morals, I had a Cuddle Pistol.

I will catch you when you fall

No wonder we traded him with defensive positioning like that
(photo of Jeff Clement sitting on a bench goes here)
(equivalent photo of Cabrera sideways on a bench)
(Clement may need to lie on a bench to avoid unnecessary knee bends)
Yeah, we need someone to hold it for a year or two until Tui is ready.
You are making me sad

I think Tui is actually going to be good, or at least good enough to keep around.

I hope so!

It just seems a perfect fit. I know he’s got potential to be an asset, but if he doesn’t make it, his last name will keep him around for years, and it will be annoying.

But I’m rooting for him.

Don't forget Halman
Halman holds the Charlton Jimerson role

Currently being held by Prentice Redman.

The only thing about Hines being let go, aside from the implied note that Wak is willing to let improvement trump friendship ...

is idle curiosity as to whether it was because of his work around third (something they acknowledged was rusty when he came in) or if it was because the infielders were his responsibility.

Too bad about Jimenez. Could've been a decent long reliever, but he just couldn't stay healthy.

LaHair’s still got an outside shot at a bench-bat role somewhere, but obviously had no future here. Messenger/Thomas were fungible depth.

Pun opportunities have taken a big hit today.
Because we never pun players on other teams
Ianetta seen it attempted
Yuni to be patient.
Imagine a parallel world where a bottle rocket accidentally shot up Jeff's nose as a kid, resulting in his permanent loss of taste and smell.

A world without smelly Mariners and drunken ramblings is not one that I would like to live in.

Yeah it sure would suck to be brain damaged
Agree to disagree

I rather be brain damaged than say, blind.

That's also a nasty way to get killed.
Aaron cares.

Think of Aaron.

Boy do I!
Ah shit no not Randy Messenger

This is so lame

The 5 empty, salty, juicy roster spots

make me want to rosterbate all over the place.

LaHair's to the memories

Jeff should write about every little thing that happens with the Mariners

because there is never enough material to read in the off season.

Yes because he clearly does not want or need a life outside this blog
Life is depressing and I'd just as soon never have to think about it
Life contains beer!

that’s the rock to which you should anchor.

Boating while intoxicated is not advised.
Don't want to get a BUI.

Which, coincidentally, sounds like buoy.
