I'm looking at this for the first time, just like you guys. Let's see what we've got.
| Rk | Player | Team | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | Pts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Elvis Andrus | Texas Rangers | 6 | 9 | 6 | 63 |
| 2 | Andrew Bailey | Oakland Athletics | 11 | 1 | 3 | 61 |
| 3 | Jeff Niemann | Tampa Bay Rays | 3 | 5 | 3 | 33 |
| 4 | Rick Porcello | Detroit Tigers | 2 | 7 | 2 | 33 |
| 5 | Brett Anderson | Oakland Athletics | 5 | 1 | 3 | 31 |
| 6 | Gordon Beckham | Chicago White Sox | 1 | 2 | 8 | 19 |
| 7 | Nolan Reimold | Baltimore Orioles | 1 | - | 1 | 6 |
| 8 | Matt Wieters | Baltimore Orioles | - | 1 | 3 | 6 |
| 9 | Brad Bergesen | Baltimore Orioles | - | 1 | - | 3 |
| 10 | Ricky Romero | Toronto Blue Jays | - | 1 | - | 3 |
| 11 | Travis Snider | Toronto Blue Jays | - | 1 | - | 3 |
Among AL starters with at least 100 IP, Brett Anderson posted the 9th-best FIP at 3.69, between Josh Beckett and John Lackey and behind zero rookies. His K/BB was excellent, he made 30 starts, and he threw a solid 175.1 innings. Somehow this was good enough to get him on all of nine ballots, while Rick Porcello came out better despite pitching like a pile of crap. Democracy! Don't know how Niemann finished above him either, but I guess there are still people who love them some W/L and ERA.
Kudos to Andrus and Bailey for being awesome, Andrus at defense and Bailey at everything. Again, hey, Anderson, but there's nothing wrong with rewarding guys who were legitimately great at what they did. Andrus is going to be a pest, and God help us if he learns how to hit.
No love for Rob Johnson or the Jakubaustrich.

I’m too lazy to look it up but he hit like .280 .345 .??? in the 2nd half.
Kinslerhomer - November 10, 2009
I don't really pay attention to half-season splits
Jeff Sullivan - November 10, 2009
I don't either
But for a guy that’s 20 years old he showed alot of improvment not just in numbers but in approach as the year went on.
Kinslerhomer - November 10, 2009
The only thing that changed in the second half was his BABIP
which went from .280 to .320 and he swung a little less often.
Matthew - November 10, 2009
Plus some more doubles
Jeff Sullivan - November 10, 2009
Do you think that SLGBIP is meaningful if it doesn't accompany a shift in LD/GB/FB rates?
Graham MacAree - November 10, 2009
Can be
Certainly not over half a season, but I don’t see why not.
Jeff Sullivan - November 10, 2009
Why?
Graham MacAree - November 10, 2009
Seems to me that doubles per ball in play is pretty damn random
Graham MacAree - November 10, 2009
I think it's within the realm of possibility that players could develop the ability to hit more 2B/3B
Jeff Sullivan - November 10, 2009
Without hitting more line drives and fly balls?
Graham MacAree - November 10, 2009
Aim!
abender20 - November 10, 2009
They could get faster.
But that’s stretching it.
Matthew - November 10, 2009
Well since I don't trust LD%, yes
Jeff Sullivan - November 10, 2009
That data is better than no data
Graham MacAree - November 10, 2009
But fewer triples
and yada yada yada, half year splits are stupid.
Matthew - November 10, 2009
Brett Anderson's voting profile clearly shows
that some people get it and others do not.
And Matt Wieters presence just indicates that some people remembered his name.
Matthew - November 10, 2009
I voted for Anderson #1...
weird results
Freneau - November 10, 2009
Me, too.
Then Elvis, then Niemann. Not that either of the second two guys are light years ahead of some other options.
Sky Kalkman - November 10, 2009
I wish I remembered my ballot
Jeff Sullivan - November 10, 2009
He would have been a good choice had he played the entire season!
Poochie - November 10, 2009
I'd bet that Porcello will end up second or third in the actual voting, which is hilarious.
abender20 - November 10, 2009
I wonder which blog voted for Travis Snider at #2?
I guess some mysteries will never be solved.
abender20 - November 10, 2009
I WANT FULL ACCOUNTABILITY OF SBN AWARD BLOG VOTES
seattlebruin - November 10, 2009
This administration promised transparency!
Trenchtown - November 10, 2009
VOTE ROBERT/JI
seattlebruin - November 10, 2009
Anderson is the clear winner.
SBN is not exactly the brightest collection of bloggers.
lailaihei - November 10, 2009 via mobile
I wonder about that. Actually it may well be the best collection of bloggers
since bloggers, by and large, aren’t the brightest.
Bearskin Rugburn - November 10, 2009
I don't really have a problem with Andrus or Bailey being ahead of him
They’re still excellent. Neiman and Porcello, on the other hand, shouldn’t be that high. Beckham and Reimold were very good as well.
CapSea - November 10, 2009
Other ways to determine outcome:
Monarchy: Jim Bankoff decides who the ROY is
Communist: One player runs unopposed/ no award because it encourages personal achievement too much
African/Arab Democracy: Considerably more votes then blogs
Oligarchy: Certain peasant blogs prevented from voting
Constitutional Monarchy: Everyone votes while Jim Bankroff rakes in the dough
Trenchtown - November 10, 2009
Too bad McCutchen Hanson and Coughlan were all in the same league
the AL has some weaker choices but i would have to say maybe Andrus or Anderson deserve it
