I know there are other sites where baseless rumors are discussed
But LL’s community would give better discussion. We could talk about rumors from a WAR standpoint, how much it makes sense for each org, and how different GMs work. ie: The Royals don’t need any more 1B/DH types, but because DM is an idiot, a rumor involving the Royals trading for Overbay isn’t necessarily outlandish.
is that it gives what in most instances are baseless rumors put forth by bored journalists/bloggers a weight they do not deserve, and a lifespan far longer than 99.9% of all rumors would deserve to have.
Rumors will be mongered whether or not they are discussed here.
I think trying to decipher which ones might have some weight through analysis might be fun. I mean like Corey Hart to the Braves for Derek Lowe and cash is just ridiculous obviously, but there are some rumors that seem to be a little more clearly thought out, and those might be fun to analyze.
If rumormongering is your thing, that’s fantastic – there’s lots of places to do it. I’d like to see this continue to be not one of them. Rumormongering is a gateway drug to rosterbation.
I feel like it gives us something baseball releated to talk about when there’s nothing really to talk about. Most people are thinking about rumors so why totally ignore that? I don’t want stupid RUMOR! RUMOR! RUMOR! coverage, but the other side of the spectrum feels like it’s the baseball equivalent of being an indie snob who looks down on everyone and tries not to show that they’re having an enjoyment at all. Let’s split the difference.
I kind of agree with you here, we wouldn't want to bring all the mlbtraderumors posters here because of the rumors main page posts.
So a daily-or-so fanpost would probably be better. Relatively hidden and we can get some nice discussion without bringing in “outsiders” that sign up just to spit shit.
but I think it depends how often there are rumors with validity, too. I don’t think you should make an open rumors thread if there’s an increased chance of dumb. I can always go to MLBTR for that, and I choose not to.
it will just be another OTFPOT – if you don’t want to read it, then you don’t have to. I voted #2, and as long as it’s a FanPost, I can’t imagine it doing either – it really won’t contribute or detract anything from the site.
but for the reason mentioned above, that hopefully, some smart people might discuss some rumors from a more statistical standpoint. Including why some psuedo-deals would be retarded.
If it’s to be a FanPost, I’d rather see it bi-daily or something so it’s not all insanely long and unwieldy.
I pretty much just lurk though, so I’m not trying to throw my weight around.
How about weekly instead of daily
Even http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ can’t make up enough Mariners rumors to support a quality daily thread.

The problem with that
is that it gives what in most instances are baseless rumors put forth by bored journalists/bloggers a weight they do not deserve, and a lifespan far longer than 99.9% of all rumors would deserve to have.

Personally I like LL because I can avoid a lot of the annoying things that make me hate other websites.
Just because rumors are being mongered doesn’t mean I need to see/hear them.
Aaron Campeau - November 19, 2009
Exactly this
If rumormongering is your thing, that’s fantastic – there’s lots of places to do it. I’d like to see this continue to be not one of them. Rumormongering is a gateway drug to rosterbation.
pdb - November 19, 2009
But none of those other places will provide decent discussion.
lailaihei - November 19, 2009
It's hard to have a decent discussion about something not worth having a decent discussion about
Aaron Campeau - November 19, 2009
Pretty much
The extent of the discussion is basically:
“This shit can’t possibly be real can it?”
“No, it can’t”
" "
OlSalty - November 19, 2009
Depends
Option 2 if it’s a fanpost.
Option 3 if it’s a front page post.
Matthew - November 19, 2009
Yes
And after second thought I change my answer to B

I like the idea of a weekly thread.

SethGrandpa - November 19, 2009
I would not like a daily rumor thread.
I don’t think I would like the type of posters who would want to write about rumors every day.
A daily thread for the various transactions that are (actually) going on in baseball? Sure.

Rumors yay!
I’d even like to see talk about rumors relating to divison rivals.
I see an article like this:
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/11/angels-could-pursue-bay-not-holliday.html
About the Angels possible going for Jason Bay, and I think: “Yeah suckers!! Sign him for as much money as possible!!!”
ARock - November 19, 2009
It would be just our luck that Bay would have a career year his first year with the Angels.
xero3k - November 19, 2009
I voted "rumors with validity" and "stupid,"
but I think it depends how often there are rumors with validity, too. I don’t think you should make an open rumors thread if there’s an increased chance of dumb. I can always go to MLBTR for that, and I choose not to.
Double06 - November 19, 2009
Judging from the results of this poll and the last
People must really like new threads.
OlSalty - November 19, 2009
I see a new polling possibility right there.
I love polls
Kermit. - November 19, 2009
I know I do.
I like new content.
But baseless rumor mongering is a waste of fucking time.
The Typical Idiot Fan - November 19, 2009
Its a FUN waste of time!
ARock - November 19, 2009
I also like the idea of weekly threads.
Goose - November 19, 2009
I voted #3, but would be fine with a weekly "rumor mill" fanpost.
Benne - November 19, 2009
Over 200 people voted "Be awesome" yet the comments have only 1 person excited about it.
Where are the other people?
CapSea - November 19, 2009
So I'm thinking a weekly rumor FanPost
Jeff Sullivan - November 19, 2009
Couldn't hurt
it will just be another OTFPOT – if you don’t want to read it, then you don’t have to. I voted #2, and as long as it’s a FanPost, I can’t imagine it doing either – it really won’t contribute or detract anything from the site.
seattlebruin - November 20, 2009
Make it a FanShot and you've got yourself a deal
Dewey N - November 22, 2009
voted awesome

losmarineros - November 20, 2009
bullet points thread
has some good examples of nice posts reasonably discussing some rumor crap, I think.
But I’m only halfway through and nobody is reading this anbyway…
