Early November Felix Update

Still nothing happening between parties to the best of my knowledge, but a couple hours ago we got this from Jon Heyman's Twitter:

#mariners gm zduriencik: Felix is our property. we're going to have him the next 2 years."

That's a bold statement from someone who isn't ordinarily so bold.

Something to think about.

I really don't want to think about Felix just walking after 2 years.
Hmmm.

Z is smart enough to know that keeping Felix on year-to-year deals only to let him walk after 2 years wouldn’t be the best move. Sooooo…….? Please mean something.

I read it to mean that Z will not trade Felix this offseason
It could also just be a statement of fact.

It almost sounds a little snippy. Twitter doesn’t really allow you to elaborate, though.

Heyman only used one quotation mark at the end, does that mean it's paraphrased?
He doesn't even use the quote his column today

“The Mariners are sure to get calls on superstar pitcher Felix Hernandez — or, as one GM put it, they’ll get “hits’’ — since they at least listened to interested teams this summer. But Seattle is telling teams that they intend to spend the winter trying to lock up Hernandez. The Mariners failed in the past to hold on to former superstars Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez and Randy Johnson — but they seem serious about doing what they can to keep the 23-year-old right-hander.”

Good point

I was trying to read some meaning into Z referring to “the next two years.” I’m sure you’re right that it means less than we may hope.

Our FO is pretty tight-lipped, generally.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this is just a way to tell teams “Felix isn’t on the table, so if you want him you’re going to pay up big time.” It just seems unlikely that GMZ would reveal something like this, unless there’s already a deal in place to keep Felix long-term that just hasn’t been announced yet..

I miss Felix already
I read the same quote and thought "fuck, GMZ isn't going to offer Felix an extension and will let him walk in 2011".
That was also my first reaction, but GMZ has earned the benefit of the doubt.
Apparently Fox hasn't managed to track Zduriencik down yet ...

they have (under the misleading/vague headline Mariners may consider dealing ace) the breaking news:

“Jack Zduriencik will be asked about the availability of Felix Hernandez, as long as the ace right-hander remains property of the Seattle Mariners.”

I read the quote as we have him under team control for two years, so stop asking me about him Geoff Baker.

So much for a fun offseason
What are you talking about?

After Felix ends up in Boston, we all get to watch the video of Robert going bat-shit crazy! I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to it.

Felix is our property and we'll have him for the next two years

his wife and children, however, we will sell down the river to cover his arbitration awards.

SIGN HIM NOW GODDAMNIT!
It is a bold statement

Especially considering humans haven’t been legal property since 1865

Felix

Maybe Z better stop talking and start signing. For almost whatever it takes. And I wonder how Felix feels about Z’s comment. “He belongs to us” !!!!!!

Could also read it as "Felix is ours and you can't have him".
I choose to read that as "(We're not planning to trade him this offseason and) We're going to have him for the next 2 years (as well as many years once this deal gets worked out)"
The full length quote was posted at the New York Daily News

Here
""He’s our property this year and next year and we’re looking forward to him being part of our organization as we move forward," Zduriencik said. "He’s one of the best in the game.

“I can’t control people calling or people wanting to have discussions. Certainly we’ll dot our Is and cross our Ts, but where we stand right now is that he’s an integral part of what we’re doing.”

I don’t think this is worth getting worked up over given that Zduriencik basically said he’d like to keep Felix. The part about having him for the next two years may be Heyman’s paraphrasing.

Doesn't seem like paraphrasing

If it is, that’s a really shitty move for a journalist.

It is possible that both Heyman and Feinsand asked the same question at different times and got similar answers.

Or that Zduriencik said the bit about two years and Feinsand didn’t pick up on it.

The lesson I draw from this, however, is that Twitter is a shitty way to convey complicated ideas.

Can I play too?

I read this as Zduriencik stating a current fact without giving anything away.
