This is like a baseball mogul offseason
Poochie - December 18, 2009
I don't think even the meager AI of Baseball Mogul would make this deal.

OH MY GOD
OlSalty - December 18, 2009
IF THIS IS TRUE
OlSalty - December 18, 2009
If this happens, this is officially the best offseason I've ever seen.

AAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!
So amazing. I worship the ground Z walks on.

c.500 PAs each of the last 2 seasons
Who knew? Not I. At only 31, he must be serviceable but… where? Griffey platoon & 11 pitchers?
Nicht verstanden.
MarkE - December 18, 2009
Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Graham MacAree - December 18, 2009
In other news...
No Silva!!
MarkE - December 18, 2009
How much money are we sending them?
we win if it’s anything less than like $14M, right?
seattlebruin - December 18, 2009
Oh never mind, I'm retarded
for some reason, I thought Bradley had one less year left than Silva
seattlebruin - December 18, 2009
Phenomenal!
spikefriedman - December 18, 2009
Agreed about the not going too crazy thing
but this isn’t the first time it’s been mentioned. This rumor has been around for a while. This is the first reliable and “it’s happening” sort of mention though.
Aaron Campeau - December 18, 2009 via mobile
Jinkies!
That’d be quite a move. Wonder how much money’s moving…. it’s possible that it’s zero, which would make this pretty much the most amazing thing ever.
marc w - December 18, 2009
How could the Cubs possibly do that, though?
Silva is owed like $4-5M more than Bradley, and Bradley is pretty clearly the superior player
seattlebruin - December 18, 2009
Maybe we ate the difference
Poochie - December 18, 2009
I'm guessing we're sending them a little cash
OlSalty - December 18, 2009
Maybe we made the Cubs eat the difference!
Poochie - December 18, 2009
I'm going to laugh when GMZ somehow convinces the Cubs to send us money or a player in addition
seattlebruin - December 18, 2009
They hate Bradley in Chicago.
He’s been a cancer in their locker room. So, who knows? We’ll have to wait and see.
sirbrianwilson - December 18, 2009
So you're saying Zduriencik didn't get 100% of what he asked for?
Huh. OK. Let me know how that works out for you.
marc w - December 18, 2009
I'm just trying to make sense of this whole thing
seattlebruin - December 18, 2009
The only thing I can figure is that Zduriencik has special Powers.
marc w - December 18, 2009
So we just added a possible .370-.400 wOBA guy for free
Poochie - December 18, 2009
Better than free if Silva's contract is gone
seattlebruin - December 18, 2009
I think he means since they have very similar contracts.
Teej - December 18, 2009
I'm reading too fast AHHHHHHHH
Teej - December 18, 2009
If bradley we're making $0.00 it would be same if we signed him and cut Silva.
Poochie - December 18, 2009
Is it wrong that I find this way more impressive than the Lee trade?
Teej - December 18, 2009
No
Graham MacAree - December 18, 2009
I'm doing cartwheels, whereas a few days ago I was merely clapping loudly.
Teej - December 18, 2009
While this is amazing, I find the Lee trade to be more amazing since pretty much everybody would like to have Cliff Lee
Poochie - December 18, 2009
yeah but, nobody likes Carlos Silva...
SebastianPruiti - December 18, 2009
Yeah but I can see stupid teams exchanging a shitty contract for him, being a proven veteran and all.
Poochie - December 18, 2009
that's true...
SebastianPruiti - December 18, 2009
We basically turned a 0 - 0.5 WAR reliever into a maybe 2-3 win player (depending where he plays) with upside to do better than that
OlSalty - December 18, 2009
Hell no
Sec 108 - December 18, 2009

Poochie - December 18, 2009
I can totally see why the Cubs would do this
I have quite a few friends in Chicago, and they all blame Bradley for the badness of the last Cubs season. It’s not logical, but they never want to see him again.
arbeck77 - December 18, 2009
Yeah Chicago fans are just full of hate for Milton Bradley
and now they’ve got Carlos Silva! So let’s see how that works out for them

Poochie - December 18, 2009
Bradley is blocking them from making other moves, and no other clubs have shown interest that wouldn't cost them lots money and thus ability to sign a replacement
And the last thing they wanted was to keep him for next season.
OlSalty - December 18, 2009
This is just kinda trading one asshole for another, isn't it? But at least Bradley can contribute.
sanford_and_son - December 18, 2009
Bradley is a talented asshole.
Teej - December 18, 2009
Bradley is potentially the best hitter on the team
We might be favorites now
Poochie - December 18, 2009
And we still could have room in the payroll to bring in Branyan or someone similar.
BrianL - December 18, 2009
Payroll didn't change at all. We could bring in pretty much anybody.
CapSea - December 18, 2009
There was a fair chance we were going to cut Silva if this didn't happen
Instead we get a talented player who we can also cut if he sucks/is bad.
OlSalty - December 18, 2009
/is an asshole
OlSalty - December 18, 2009
I care less about the asshole part, and more about the sucks/is bad part.
JLProck - December 18, 2009
The Trade
Bradley: More Asshole / More Talent
Silva: Less Asshole / Less Talent
ThundaPC - December 18, 2009
Silva: More Ass.
msb - December 18, 2009
Is Bradley really that much of an asshole?
It seems it was just a reaction to the spotlight in Chicago.
redwolf75 - December 18, 2009
He's had issues most places he's been.
Teej - December 18, 2009
In Texas, though, a similar market and situation to Seattle,
I don’t remember him having many issues at all.
redwolf75 - December 18, 2009
He just needs to be treated with care.
Getting him into a quiet market could help. There are virtually no expectations here thanks to the nature of this trade and his coming off a “bad” year, and columnists aren’t going to lay into him if he goes on a cold streak. And I trust Wak and Griffey to get him onboard the happy train.
It’s interesting, if nothing else. I don’t think he’s volatile enough to ruin the clubhouse. He’ll be dropped if he becomes a problem.
Teej - December 18, 2009
Yep.
That’s what I love about this deal. There’s almost no downside.
redwolf75 - December 18, 2009
Ron Washington wanted him back last year
""I ain’t never had a problem with Milton because I was always honest with him," Washington said. “If I didn’t like what he was doing, I let him know. I didn’t let anything fester with Milton. All Milton wants is people to tell him the truth, to be honest with him. He’s no dummy. He knows when he’s [screwing] up.”"

Phil Hatzenbuehler - December 18, 2009

GMZ must be a very good blackmailer. I love blackmail.
Corco - December 18, 2009
You're gonna love Bradley!
kentroyals5 - December 18, 2009
This is like when I play Monopoly with 5 year olds
Attractive Nuisance - December 18, 2009
Fangraphs
Bill James projects Bradley to be a 3.0 WAR
Our offense just jumped to about 23 WAR; not bad
tkballer22 - December 18, 2009
He's probably going to DH so the positional adjustment will bring that down
But considering Silva was completely useless that’s maybe 2 WAR for nothing.
OlSalty - December 18, 2009
And the '20' assumption included someone else at DH who you're subtracting
So bring it down another 1 WAR.
MarkE - December 18, 2009
Well I shouldn't say he's only going to DH
He probably plays LF a bit too while Saunders gets the hang of things.
OlSalty - December 18, 2009
Even in the best scenario, though, his ABs replace someone else's
And their contribution still needs to be subtracted
MarkE - December 18, 2009
Yes, but also the money that would have gone to signing that person can be used in wins elsewhere
Assuming this didn’t cost us anything/very much.
OlSalty - December 18, 2009
Well, a portion of those ABs will be Griffey's.
So you wouldn’t have to subtract much there.
Manzanillos Cup - December 18, 2009
We were essentially replacement level at DH as it was
Between Carp and Griffey, so you don’t really have to do much to see the value here.
spikefriedman - December 18, 2009
Cliff Lee's trade really felt like Christmas

Aha. Ahahahaha. Ahahaa!
MarkE - December 18, 2009
Can someone Smarter than me tell me how this affects the roster?
I assume Bradley is the DH and Saunders is the LF. You have Langerhans as the 4th OF. A bench of Hannahan, Hall, Griffey and a back up C. That’s 14 players which would mean an 11 man staff (which is cool if true). However, we really are missing a backup SS. I don’t trust Jack Wilson’s health enough to go with Hannahan and Hall as the two backup options. Are those two good enough defensively to play 20+ games there?
If this move is true I feel like one of either Saunders or Langerhans has to go. Especially since Bradley is an average LF. I know Saunders can be in Tacoma another year, so that’s a possibility. He also has trade value, and Bradley + Langerhans can probably hold down LF until Ackley is ready. But if we decide to keep Saunders on the 25 man roster and get rid of Langerhans, what happens? Was his contract guaranteed? I have a hard time believing they signed him without knowing the Bradley thing was coming.
arbeck77 - December 18, 2009
We still have Josh Wilson stashed in Tacoma
And we still have room in our budget to make some other moves.
spikefriedman - December 18, 2009
That's all well and good
But I worry more about Jack Wilson missing 2 games here and 3 games there. Where he doesn’t go on the DL, making it hard to bring up Josh Wilson.
arbeck77 - December 18, 2009
Jack Hannahan.
BrianL - December 18, 2009
I'm quite confident Hannahan can be a competent shortstop
Corco - December 18, 2009
Um
seattlebruin - December 18, 2009
what?
Corco - December 18, 2009
I don't think he'd be good or even average defensively at SS
but is there a chance he could at least play competently enough to fill in every now and then?
BrianL - December 18, 2009
Pretty much
I could run him out there once every couple of weeks, and expect him to not completely embarrass himself, but counting on him to back up SS is not something I’d want to do. Scarily, I’m totally in favor of Figgins/Josh Wilson in that scenario.
seattlebruin - December 18, 2009
Then Hannahan plays SS
That’s what he’s there for.
BFR74 - December 18, 2009
Um
seattlebruin - December 18, 2009
I'm just not confident in his ability to play 20+ games there over the year
I could be wrong though, he could be an average to slightly below defender there.
arbeck77 - December 18, 2009
That's fine for a backup
OlSalty - December 18, 2009
If he sucks it up and its more then 5 games.
DL Wilson bring up other Wilson.
Scruffy Lefty - December 18, 2009
That's really his upside at SS defense though, is average
which would be totally awesome, since we know he’s non-embarrassing at 2B and pretty good at 1B/3B. But do you really want someone with an upside of average defensively who is likely not that good to be your primary backup SS for a guy who gets hurt a lot?
seattlebruin - December 18, 2009
Yes dammit.
Now shut up.
Scruffy Lefty - December 18, 2009
This actually adds to the budget according to Cot's Contracts.
Silva is owed $11.5 in both 2010 and 2011. Bradley is owed $9 in 2010 and $12 in 2011.
BrettJMiller - December 18, 2009
Perhaps, but as Jeff points out there's a good chance some money was sent Chicago's way as well.
BrianL - December 18, 2009
Larry disagrees
“There is no immediate word if the Mariners will send money in the deal to make up any of the $4 million difference. I doubt it. The Cubs were pretty desperate to move Bradley and might have had to release him if they couldn’t.”
Brian Floyd - December 18, 2009

Graham MacAree - December 18, 2009
One of the things I love most about this move
is that it’s going to piss off all the “we need nice guys that love their grandmothers and volunteer at the Humane Society on our team” people. Fuck ‘em, Bradley’s a great pickup and no more Silva!
pdb - December 18, 2009
YES YES YES!
Phil Hatzenbuehler - December 18, 2009
Bradley has anger management & authority issues
but he loves his mother and grandmother, and may well volunteer at the Humane Society.
He’s an … interesting … fellow.
msb - December 18, 2009

So glad to see Silva gone, and to get someone with actual talent in return? I’ve not doubted GMZ, but even after the Lee trade I would never expect anyone to take on Silva willingly. Bradley can be a cancer, but I think some Griffey tickles will fix that. Or maybe Bradley will stab him..
shumagorath - December 18, 2009
Griffey is the reason this works
Because he can be a mentor to Bradley and keep Bradley from going ballistic. Another plus is that Bradley is always tradable
gybmsfn - December 18, 2009
I would say that Bradley is not always able to be traded
Considering that the Cubs were so desperate to move him and were considering cutting him because nobody showed interest

The unstoppable tickler meets the immovable stabber . . .
FlaskInSafeco - December 18, 2009

I do hope Bradley fights the Moose at some point, though.
Jeff Nye - December 18, 2009
I think we all hope that fight takes place.
BrianL - December 18, 2009
And hopefully, this might be one of those Patriots-style teams
where you get a bunch of good clubhouse guys/Wakamatsu and then you can bring in a guy who caused problems elsewhere and he’ll do better in that kind of atmosphere.
seattlebruin - December 18, 2009

I work up in the sweets and my coworkers and I have had many brushes with that moose. And I must say, he’s a real asshole most of the time when he’s not entertaining kids.

Bradley splits time at DH and LF. Saunders is LF/4th OF.
There’s a trade yet to go, to get rid of one more OF.

Yeah so we can pick up Adrian Gonzalez
InSpokane - December 18, 2009

MarkE - December 18, 2009
To me, it almost doesn't matter, but yeah that is a factor
I hate Silva to the degree that Cubs fans hate Bradley, but with the difference the Milton Bradley is actually a major league baseball player.
I don’t think we’re likely to be sending much, though; the Cubs don’t have a ton of leverage here.
Jeff Nye - December 18, 2009
Exactly. My guess was no money would trade hands, since the Cubs have the bigger headache to relieve.

Brock and Salk are good times. I listened to them on Monday as the details of the Lee trade were slowly coming out and Jake announced he was coming back. I listened to the Calabro show that same day and all he wanted to talk about was how much the Seahawks stink. I was disapointed in the man.

Calabro wouldn’t let Thiel get a word in edgewise. Shot down Shannon too, after they kept telling him why Jason Bay was a sucky fit for the Mariners. I like both Drayer and Thiel, and thought they may have something to add or some news to break, but Calabro made me switch to music pretty quick.

But I’m disappointed to hear that he’s a buffoon. He truly is the best basketball play-by-play guy I’ve ever heard.

I feel like he's at his best when he's doing radio

But yeah, I can’t listen to his show for fear of tainting my memories of him and Marques. Just not his thing

He’s good at play-by-play, but holy crap he’s the worst analyst ever. They should recruit Dave Grosby from KJR to do that show, since that’s KJR’s only worthwhile guy.
BrettJMiller - December 18, 2009
I'd rather Grosby replace the Colin Cowherd show.
BrianL - December 18, 2009
I'm not usually awake then, so I'd rather he take the afternoon slot.
But I realize more people could listen to the radio in the morning.
BrettJMiller - December 18, 2009
Salk is pretty good. The show itself isn't bad until they start taking calls.

Bradley has a bad reputation, but Silva isn't an angel either.
Silva signed a huge contract and immediately started training at every buffet in the US and South America.
He was also the leader in 2008 of the “Ichiro is selfish and a cancer to the clubhouse brigade.”
This is a good trade for the Mariners and could be a wash trade for the Cubs.

It doesn’t make sense. He’s a good fit for the team, reasonably priced, and fits the profile. GMZ should have been busy knocking down his door.
What’s this you say? He’s been convincing the Cubs to trade a useful player in exchange for one of the worst contracts in all of baseball? Well GIDDYUP

How would people feel about
Trading Brandon Morrow for Matt Gamel? I know it’s come up before, but Rosenthall speculated they might be looking to revisit the deal (much the same way they did in this deal, which is AMAZING). According to a source of his we are trying to trade Morrow for a corner infielder.
MattPD - December 18, 2009
I think that shows a lack of imagination. Z can probably get Pujols for Morrow.
HARRYP09 - December 18, 2009
Bradley ruins teams everywhere he goes
Put me in the skeptical category. Cubs have been trying to dump him going back to last year. Maybe being arounf Griffey will help, but he’d be also taking away someof griffey’s ABs. And likely step in the way of saunders development. Now we are trying to trade morrow for acorner infielder? Is it me or are we selling out the young talent for one big run in 2010?
MagicMike23 - December 18, 2009
Bradley didn't ruin the Cubs.
Bradley seemed to do well the year before in Texas.
BrianL - December 18, 2009

MagicMike23 - December 18, 2009

pdb - December 18, 2009
We added a hitter who needs coddling
Griffey will do less of what he’s bad at and more of what he’s good at.
Attractive Nuisance - December 18, 2009
Exactly.
This takes a few AB’s away from Griffey, which means he gets to spend more time on the bench spreading his Griffeyness everywhere. This is a good thing.
pdb - December 18, 2009
Excellent point.
This is where Griffey will earn his money.
redwolf75 - December 18, 2009
He didn't do himself any favors with the Rangers
For all the talk about him being a great hitter, he was basically a loafer who would decide to be in the line-up whenever he felt like it.
Granted he was probably protecting himself for a big contract, but he made some quotes last off-season about not giving his all with the Rangers, because the Rangers weren’t seriously about signing him long-term (which is a crock of shit; our owner was broke). Kinda rubbed some people the wrong way.
But you all have him for two years. He’ll bitch about not getting enough playing time in the outfield and hurt himself somehow.
Don’t get me wrong. He’ll be a highly-valuable asset. But you’re foolish if you don’t expect some baggage
oc - December 18, 2009
I think we all expect baggage.
Even with that considered, this is a great pickup for the team.
BrianL - December 18, 2009
If the owner was broke then the Rangers weren't serious about signing him long-term
Jeff Sullivan - December 18, 2009

JLProck - December 18, 2009

seattlebruin - December 18, 2009
Rosenthal & Morosi yesterday
“At least three teams remain interested in Cubs outfielder Milton Bradley — the Rays, Rangers and Mariners. However, no trade is close, according to major-league sources.
The Rays and Cubs have been at an impasse for weeks, with neither side willing to budge on the terms of a proposed Bradley-for-Pat Burrell exchange. The Rangers, one source said, remain a "longshot" for Bradley, who would fit well in their lineup, but did not leave on the best of terms after the 2007 season.
The Mariners, meanwhile, might be an even bigger longshot — the team, after making positive news with its signing of free-agent third baseman Chone Figgins and trade for left-hander Cliff Lee, likely would balk at adding a player as controversial as Bradley. "
msb - December 18, 2009
Well, win some lose some Ken.
gregrabble - December 18, 2009
Trading Silva for Bradley is postive news in my eyes.

JLProck - December 18, 2009
Silva for anything useful would have been a plus, no? JY or someone posted his winter numbers the other day.
He’s still a pile of suck, I figured he’d get cut before the season started.
Kermit. - December 18, 2009
Not being critical, I'm just amazed we got anything for him
Kermit. - December 18, 2009
I.... so the Cubs CHOSE Silva over Burrell.
They picked an ex-pitcher over Pat Burrell. What the fuck is going on?
marc w - December 18, 2009
They were going to have to eat a lot of cash to get Burrell
arbeck77 - December 18, 2009
How much cash?
Again, Burrell is a baseball player. Silva USED TO BE a baseball player. I just cannot fathom this from the Cubs perspective.
The idea was that they’d just cut him and eat the salary… so unless they had to pay 100% of Burrell’s AND Bradley’s salaries, I still don’t see why Burrell+cash is worse than what they did.
I love what they did!
marc w - December 18, 2009

BrettJMiller - December 18, 2009
That is fine by me too.
Sec 108 - December 18, 2009
Agreed
ANYTHING to get rid of Silva
MattPD - December 18, 2009
Did they say when we were sending it?
Was it $3 and $3 each year, or just $6 million up front?
BrettJMiller - December 18, 2009
6 Million up front
MattPD - December 18, 2009
Hmm, so that's really just a $3.5 million raise in 2010 Payroll.
Bradley being owed $9 million this year, and Silva being owed $11.5. So now we’re paying $15 million for Silva’s old roster spot…still leaves us with plenty of cash, and makes more sense to do it this year actually with Bradley’s raising contract in 2011
BrettJMiller - December 18, 2009
Graham mentioned that this will probably only cost us 500k this year.
BrianL - December 18, 2009
Heyman says $6M over two years
Graham MacAree - December 18, 2009
