because I got a call yesterday from him that said “you almost had tickets to the opening round games next week”, and then went on to tell me the story of how he thought he couldn’t use his tickets but then it turned out he could. It would have been preferable that he not call at all.
There has to be more people who simply can't stand basketball...
It’s such a terrible month when the only sports on are meaningless baseball with below replacement level players and hour after hour of basketball. The time from the end of the super bowl until opening day is just the most tortuous month-ish in existence.
My attachment to Memphis basketball has less to do with basketball than community pride.
Don’t get me wrong; I love watching them play on its own merits. But Memphis basketball is religion there, and there’s not a whole lot else to feel good about in Memphis. So while part of it is about watching my team do well, another huge part of it is knowing how important it is to the city.
This is kind of how I feel about Washington basketball
I don’t feel any real connection to Gonzaga, and I only feel a little bit of one to the Huskies since my parents were Alumni (I’m going to WWU myself) but I feel compelled to cheer them on when they’re actually fielding a good team because they’re kind of my home town. Basketball normally bores the hell out of me but when you’ve got a couple teams in state that might reach the final four I feel kind of compelled to pay a little bit of attention out of city/state pride.
Spring training got boring as soon as we stopped being undefeated. (And scoring over 10 runs each game).
The most interesting part to me no is to see if Griffey was used as DH or not. I hope he plays DH a lot in spring so he’ll get used to it, and be fine with it once the real season starts.
Since this is a split squad game, how will we have enough outfielders? I don't remember there being six on the roster currently, with so many of them at the WBC.
I got dogs / pop / beer pre-game, and when I got back to our seats, my g/f informed me that the two old men behind us were very bright and knew a lot about baseball.
Throughout the games they informed us of the following:
Tui might take the everyday 3b job from Beltre because Tui plays great defense and Beltre has been a total bust.
Bryan LaHair is really tall, and therefore really good.
You hate it because it matters so much and the tension is unbearable, right?

Can we do the WBC every year?
BrettJMiller - March 13, 2009
The only sport that has not made me unbearably sad for the last three years is college basketball.
Aaron Campeau - March 13, 2009
See, this is what sucks for me.
I just don’t enjoy any basketball, so while teams in Washington haven’t done too terribly, I can’t feel happy about it, since I hate basketball.
Really, the Seahawks have been my “good” team, and 2008….well, 2008 was just 2008. Yuck.

I tend to root for all the Washington teams to do well in the Tourney
As a UW fan, I’m not exactly homies with WSU, but I feel that sense of state pride when they do well against other teams, especially East Coast.
Ezzra - March 13, 2009
On a scale of sad to unbearably sad where does Memphis clutchness rank?
Robert - March 13, 2009
Interestingly enough I was sad but in no way dissapointed so it really wasn't a big deal.
Aaron Campeau - March 13, 2009
I have hated watching basketball since the NBA game went to shit about 15 years ago.
I hate March the most. Spring training is nice and all but it’s really just methadone. I want my good junk!
Big Jared - March 13, 2009
I like March solely because it means winter's on the way out
which doesn’t matter so much in SoCal but up ‘round these parts that’s a pretty big damn deal.
pdb - March 13, 2009

On an unrelated note
the official MLB app for iPhone is going to have streaming gameday audio. Talk about your killer features.
bluemax - March 13, 2009
Sweet jesus that's awesome.
Now they just need to make a quicktime player that streams MLB.tv
BrettJMiller - March 13, 2009
For the iPhone or for OS X?
Because I’ve been using Quicktime to stream MLB.tv for 2 years now.
bluemax - March 13, 2009
For the iPhone. I don't like Mac desktops or computers in general.
The iPhone is the only piece of Apple equipment I’ve ever had.
BrettJMiller - March 13, 2009
I just bought an iMac.
The thing rocks.
JLProck - March 13, 2009
Well they do have video highlights
that play after the fact. Considering other phones have streaming video I’m not sure why the iPhone and MLB couldn’t do something similar.
bluemax - March 13, 2009

BrettJMiller - March 13, 2009

LF: Redman
CF: Balentien
RF: Gillies
Vs Dbacks
LF: Wilson
CF: Gutierrez
RF: Morse
Eyebrows - March 13, 2009
Gillies?

PositivePaul - March 13, 2009
SS, WBC...
Aaron Campeau - March 13, 2009
Still, if you're going to use Gillies, why not use
Carroll/almonte/McOwen or whatever? Or, even better, that Steve Moss guy they picked up a month or two ago. Is he hurt or something?
marc w - March 13, 2009
Niehaus said something about Gillies being in 'extended' camp
I think most of the other minor leaguers are just arriving in Peoria
shinallsrevenge - March 13, 2009
That's probably it. Though I know I've seen Joe Dunigan pinch run
and I’d bet they’ve got a few other guys hanging around.
Moss really does surprise me; he wouldn’t be in extended camp, and they clearly need the depth.
marc w - March 13, 2009
Oh hey, a Mel Stocker sighting....
I thought they’d get indie-league vet with Brewer ties #1, but they went with indie-league vet with Brewer ties #2.
marc w - March 13, 2009
More chance that he injures himself and we get to be done with him for another year!
Robert - March 13, 2009

97.3 FM it is.

shinallsrevenge - March 13, 2009

Justin Thomas used to be a prospect...
Reminded me kind of Buehrle.
He was the wildy effective pitcher now he’s just wild.

Buehrle is a good pitcher.
