Time for some sexy split-squad action. How the hell has Randy Messenger been our best pitcher of the spring? Who the hell even noticed Randy Messenger when we signed him in the first place? What the hell is happening? Why the hell is Randy Messenger enjoying the greatest success of his career while Mark Lowe toils in agony? I hate spring training so much.

People who noticed Messenger:
Myself and Aaron
Matthew - March 16, 2009
I meant the first time
Jeff Sullivan - March 16, 2009
I'm sorry I don't make it my business to be concerned with the flaming douchebags of the world until they enter my orbit.
Aaron Campeau - March 16, 2009
Gomez mentioned it in a MiLB recap.
Matthew - March 16, 2009
For some reason I keep on thinking his name is Aaron Messenger
JI - March 16, 2009
How have we not made more fun of the fact that his name is "Randy Messenger"?
Jeff Sullivan - March 16, 2009
Too much focus on surname puns.
Matthew - March 16, 2009
While my statement is in no way manufactured
I was hoping this would work as acbait :-/
JI - March 16, 2009
I was aware of the trap.
Aaron Campeau - March 16, 2009
lol Erin amirite
JI - March 16, 2009
Don't shoot
the Messenger.
lemonverbena - March 16, 2009
This is how I imagine a randy messenger
Jeff Sullivan - March 16, 2009
It's my dick in a box!
JLProck - March 16, 2009
Good thing Joh-GEE-ma is not in the lineup today.
ThundaPC - March 16, 2009
Here's something I'd rather watch or listen to then another ST game:
Remember the good times.
JLProck - March 16, 2009
That's just depressing.
Aaron Campeau - March 16, 2009
Oh, the memories.
JLProck - March 16, 2009
And only half of those were travelling
OlSalty - March 16, 2009
Still an improvement over today's NBA.
The proof is in the pudding.
JLProck - March 16, 2009
Jakubauskas?
OlSalty - March 16, 2009
YES!
marc w - March 16, 2009
Triunfel is playing SS in the Cleveland game too
OlSalty - March 16, 2009
And Morse in the OF, Tui at 3B, Clement at C, Mike Carp in LF....
and Jak has no strikeouts.
I’m surprised they didn’t have Mike Wilson at 2B and Mike Sweeney in CF.
What a performance, given the circumstances.
marc w - March 16, 2009
"CARP DROPPED THE BALL! CARP DROPPED THE BALL!"
….
ThundaPC - March 16, 2009
Quote from (Take a guess):
ThundaPC - March 16, 2009
I would say Bedard, but that's too many words.
JLProck - March 16, 2009
Please be true please be true please be true...
EnglishMariner - March 16, 2009
IT'S FUCKING LEGIT!
BEDARD IS FUCKING THE MAN AND HIS ASS IS FINE.
EnglishMariner - March 16, 2009
If he really said that
I’d say “The Interview” has ceased to be an ironic commentary.
And become a glorious celebration.
losmarineros - March 16, 2009
Based on the ass pain, I would the fucking is the other way around.
joof - March 16, 2009
You might even think that, yeah?
JLProck - March 16, 2009
Branyan has hit 3 HR in 24 hours.
Four now for the spring.
I suspect this guy is going to be very streaky + fun to watch + infuriating to watch.
EnglishMariner - March 16, 2009
Yeah, he's going to strikeout way way more often than he has so far
OlSalty - March 16, 2009
Career K rate of 37.5% for Russell the Muscle.
Over 500 PA, which is what the M’s think he’ll get, that works out to 187.5 strikeouts. He averages just about a homer every 17 PA, which works out to ~30 homeruns over 500 PA. Those aren’t guarantees, but I hope he plays good defense.
JLProck - March 16, 2009
So far in ST he's sitting around a 15% K rate
So yeah I’d definitely expect that to go up substantially.
OlSalty - March 16, 2009
Actually, that 37.5% stat that fangraphs gives
refers to ABs, not PAs, his Ks per PA percentage is, 34.4%, or 171.8 strike outs, not a lot less, but at least a little less horrific
Malcontent1 - March 16, 2009
Actually, the 37.5% was post season,
his career rate (per AB) is 39.85%
Malcontent1 - March 16, 2009
I would like him to strike out in 50% of his PAs.
That would be amazing to watch.
Aaron Campeau - March 16, 2009
I always wanted to see what Branyan can do
And never in a million year did I think the Mariners would be the one to give out that opportunity. I’m pumped.
JI - March 16, 2009
Thanks for pointing that out.
I’ve been reading the bottom line as Career, not Post Season, even though it says “Post Season” just slightly left of the number. So, I’ll shut up now.
JLProck - March 16, 2009
He has a slightly below average UZR at 1B in 300+IP.
Interestingly his UZR in the OF is pretty much -5 < 0 > 5 so maybe he sees time in LF for some games if Griffey get’s hurt and Chavez/Wlad implode to get Shelton’s bat into the lineup against RHP?
EnglishMariner - March 16, 2009
I wouldn't count on it
Jeff Sullivan - March 16, 2009
We have too many people to play in the OF already
OlSalty - March 16, 2009
Looks like our pitching showed up today. Of course it's ST, but I was kinda getting sick
of seeing us give up double digits every game. Would like to see a few of these bullpen arms actually start to put up some zeroes, before the season starts (that means you Mark Lowe and Roy Corcoran)
Branyan/Shelton is looking like a pretty healthy platoon at this point. Hope these guys can carry some of their ST success into the season.
Rudy4three - March 16, 2009
Alternatively
I wish there were better examples than Shelton or Tui, because I actually like both.
JY - March 16, 2009
Clement has a single and walk today.. Baby steps
Rudy4three - March 16, 2009
Walking has been the one thing Clement has done well.
I suppose, we could also talk about Chris Woodward’s isolated slugging?
JY - March 16, 2009
"Walking has been the one thing Clement has done well."
Which is something this team sorely needs.
JLProck - March 16, 2009
Agreed.
.Taylor - March 16, 2009
Maybe they are trying to work on his strike zone definition, it's been an issue the team has raised quite a bit.
I could see how that could negatively affect his contact and power.
Kermit. - March 16, 2009
We also need him to hit for power
OlSalty - March 16, 2009
The Right hand hitting, First Basemen/ DH is the only Position Battle living up to expectations.
Sweeney and Shelton are both hitting decent so far. Too bad we can’t roll out 3, 1st basemen. Maybe one of them will be better than Yuni at SS. That is not a stretch.
Ichiro
Lopez
Beltre
Griffey
Shelton
Branyon
Clement
Sweeney
Gutti
Lantern - March 16, 2009
I really wanted Cedeno to do well.
I don’t know how much more Yuni I can handle.
JLProck - March 16, 2009
Wak has been calling Yuni out a lot. Maybe (grasping at straws here) they're preparing the public for a SS change?
BrettJMiller - March 16, 2009
Let's just hope that change isn't Mike Morse.
You’ll have to excuse me. I revert back to the Bavasi days sometimes.
JLProck - March 16, 2009
I'm hoping Cedeno gets the job.
