We had started to hear the rumblings that Duch, the Athletics' nominal ace heading into this season, was having elbow quibbles. Well now we know a little bit more, namely that they're serious enough to warrant athriscopic surgery.
Manager Bob Geren announced the surgery on Friday, but he said the team has not yet determined when or where Duchscherer will have the operation. He also said the A's won't know how long Duchscherer will be out until after the surgery. Typically, a pitcher would miss at least six weeks with an arthroscopic procedure on his elbow.
The deal here seems to be that they do not know what they are dealing with regarding Justin's elbow. He's been bothered by it almost all Spring and had to pull himself out of his latest minor league start so the forecast would not be encouraging here. The chances that surgery uncovers a serious strain or tear seem more than remote at the moment, an injury that could seriously hamper the Athletics this season, who are already lacking quality depth in the rotation.
Of course, the Mariners aren't much better with the issues on Bedard and Morrow, but those certainly appear minor in comparison to this and the troubles facing the Angels as we approach Opening Day.
----------------------------------------
And now comes word from the LA Times that John Lackey is expected to start the season on the D/L, joining Kelvim Escobar and Ervin Santana.
Ace John Lackey is expected to open the season on the disabled list after an MRI test revealed inflammation in his throwing elbow.
...
The right-hander tried to play catch on Thursday, but when he continued to feel discomfort, he was sent for an MRI test Thursday. Dr. Lewis Yocum, team physician, will travel to Arizona on Saturday to review the MRI results, and the team is expected to know more about the injury then.

So,
At this point, the Rangers have the most stable rotation in the division?
ThundaPC - March 27, 2009
The Rangers rotation has been pre-broken.
Matthew - March 27, 2009
Beautiful
Sec 108 - March 27, 2009
So....Dallas Braden-Opening Day Starter?
Goose - March 27, 2009
Seems so.
Matthew - March 27, 2009
Just a little worse than Joe Saunders-Opening Day Starter.
Goose - March 27, 2009
Well it's definitly better than Sojo's Carlos Silva-Opening Day Starter.
Slurvey - March 27, 2009
So with all of the pitching prospects and stars the A's pump out, they certainly seem to be good at wearing them out.
Think of all the pitchers they produced over the years. And then think about what kind of injury history or flame out career they have after leaving.
Wilder. - March 27, 2009
Lets see.... Starters that were with the A's for a decent amount of time...
Hudson – Delt with Oblique inuries with A’s, relativly healthy with Braves till TJ last year.
Mulder – Hip injury with A’s in final year, traded to Cardinals, healthy for a year then arm injuries.
Zito – No injuries, just sucks post-A’s
Harden – Born Injured
Harang – Healthy
Blanton – Healthy
Duchscherer – Injuries last couple years
Haren – Healthy
Lilly – Healthy
Redman – Healthy? But has always sucked.
Zonis - March 29, 2009
Well at least out of the rubble of pitching arms and injuries happening to the division Felix remains unharmed.
Slurvey - March 27, 2009
Shut up shut up shut up
Goose - March 27, 2009
After the WBC,
Felix will be fine physically, but psychologically NOOOOOOOO!
Wilder. - March 27, 2009
Well this was a dumb thing to say.

That's a shame

Updated with news on Lackey.
Matthew - March 27, 2009
We have to win 1 less game!
JI - March 27, 2009
the cahill/anderson era has begun
considering they are 2 of the 5 best non mlb level pitching prospects on the planet
espn bbtn young guns draft
1. price
2. hanson
3. strasburg
4. cahill
5. adenhart – sorry kurkjian your pick was a joke
6. anderson
Asfan4ever723 - March 27, 2009
Who are the other three?
Adam J. Morris - March 27, 2009
No. No they are not
Graham MacAree - March 27, 2009
Yeah.
Neftali Feliz and Madison Bumgarner are better than those guys right now.
Teej - March 27, 2009
So is Yu Darvish
Graham MacAree - March 28, 2009
How are they 2 of the top 5?
If you ranked them 4th and 6th?
Ezzra - March 27, 2009
I think he is counting Price as MLB
Zonis - March 29, 2009
Because if anybody knows their prospects(or baseball in general for that matter), it's Baseball Tonight.
Goose - March 28, 2009
They really ranked Strasburg below Hanson?
On some days, I think that I’m missing out by never watching SportsCenter or Baseball Tonight. I’m wrong on those days.
katal - March 28, 2009
In somewhat related news,
Wakamatsu is still my favorite manager.
ThundaPC - March 27, 2009
I like that part about the bunting. When they throw out the line 'doing all the small things right', thats the kind of stuff I'm thinking of.
Kermit. - March 27, 2009
Woah
that article makes it sound like Sweeney is officially the back up at first base.
bluemax - March 27, 2009
Well I know i should stay away from comments from the Times/PI/MLB.com blog but...
Suddenly Morse can do amazing things.
Slurvey - March 27, 2009
He doesn't have to be amazing to hit better than Balentien did last year
Though I agree they overestimate Morse’s ability to field.
Ezzra - March 27, 2009
The Mariners will still figure out a way to suck.
Fin - March 27, 2009
I can't wait for everybody to be shocked when Texas wins the division
Nick S - March 27, 2009
And be even more shocked
When they become this year’s Rays/Rockies. If this pattern holds up, we’ll make the WS by 2011 (and lose).
ralphie81 - March 27, 2009
That is what every simulation of Baseball Mogul has told me.
Robert - March 28, 2009
Could happen
Less likely than any other team winning it though.
Sorry to be a downer.
OlSalty - March 27, 2009
This reminds me of last year when Escobar and Lackey got injured.
At least our collective response is more tempered.
Omerta - March 28, 2009
Last year we were looking for a silver lining to that terrible offseason
This year, most of us feel confident with the moves the M’s have made, so we can go into the season with level heads.
cwel87 - March 28, 2009
Last year we figured we had better odds at the division
Matthew - March 28, 2009
That was a dumb thing to figure.
JI - March 28, 2009
We made it pretty clear that this was under the assumption that none of JJ, Bedard, Beltre, Felix, and Ichiro got hurt
Graham MacAree - March 31, 2009
