It's gotta be tough to adjust to a position player pitching.
At least the first pitch you have NO idea what to expect. Sort of like how I’ve watched good beaseball players come play slow-pitch softball, and take three games to get the timing down. They just have no idea what to do with a pitch going 10 mph.
Thingray - April 15, 2009
I imagine, too, that there's a lot of mental buildup while waiting for the pitch to get there
When you have less than a half second to recognize a pitch and swing at it, you don’t do much thinking. Waiting for a pitch to get there, for even one second, may lead to overthinking things.
tootthekazoo - April 15, 2009
Beaseball players. Nice job thingray...
But that’s kind of my point. All the timing mechanisms hitters have are based on mid-eighties to mid-nineties fastballs, and then the usual offspeed pitches.
A 70 something MPH fastball must be hard to adjust to.
Thingray - April 15, 2009
Nady could be cheap option next year

He was sent to bat because Lou didn’t want to use a pinch-hitter in the 3rd inning. You send Harden to bat and bring in the relief pitcher to start the next inning.
Weird line on Harden today. Every ball put in play was a base hit. 8 K’s in 3 IP.
Wilder. - April 15, 2009
And 4 walks and 92 pitches.
Ineffective is more like it.
Matthew - April 15, 2009
Harden had 92 pitches
and he’s on a 100 pitch limit. Lou had to go to his bullpen early and didn’t want to start with the pinch hitters too early. He gave up 4 runs in his three innings.

Fan: I love Albert Pujols!
MLB: Well, do you have his jersey?
Fan: Yeah – I buy a new one every year, this one is the one with the ASG patch on it.
MLB: Well, have we got something for you! Now, you can buy another authentic MLB jersey, but this time, Albert Pujols will be #42! Isn’t that awesome?
Fan:
MLB: No, seriously! It’s awesome! You have the chance to own a piece of history!
Fan: but, uh, Pujols is #5, right?
MLB: Yeah, but for One Very Special Day he will be wearing #42! Don’t you want to remember that great day in MLB history, the day your favorite player wore a different number?
Fan: (backs away, mumbling something about having to catch a bus)

pdb - April 15, 2009

“We thought that perhaps the time had come to find a new way to honor Jackie Robinson, but we wanted to go out with a bang” or somesuch and do something else.
Aaron Campeau - April 15, 2009
Because over use cheapens the thing
Honestly, it feels like MLB is using this as a way to get people out to the ballpark. If baseball were really ashamed of being disgrafully fucking racist, you’d think MLB would find a way not to use it to make a buck.
philosofool - April 15, 2009
If overuse cheapens the thing then require it every ten years or something (on significant anniversaries)
The problem is the general public won’t see it that way if they just discontinue it after a year of doing it.
With all due respect to Mr. Robinson, whatever tributes they were doing before the unretiring of #42 were certainly sufficient, and then on special anniversaries I think it’s reasonable to be a little outlandish.
But if you do something outlandish on a normal anniversary, you’re going to be expected to do it every single time.
I think doing it to begin with cheapens the thing.
Corco - April 15, 2009
Hey look Aardsma is the highest rated reliever by WPA by a country mile.
And also, Felix fastball is down almost 2 mph so far this year according to FG. Hopefully that is just because of the dodgy ankle and Oakland gun, but it is something we have to keep an eye on.

Guy got cleaned off in a following douple play, so he still only faced 27 batters, which was kind of a cool footnote to the event.
Kermit. - April 15, 2009
If a runner reached base, it's not a perfect game. Simple, clean rule.
There’ve been several no-hitters that weren’t perfect games due to error – Dick Bosman of the indians in 1974, Bill McCahan of the A’s in the 40s, Jerry Reuss in 1980, Terry Mulholland in 1990.
(And there have been several no-hitters where the pitcher faced the minimum due to a CS, double play, pick-off, whatever).
marc w - April 15, 2009

I think that was a FOX Saturday baseball game.
Only thing on TV.
Wilder. - April 15, 2009
It was on a Sunday.
Nevermind.
Wilder. - April 15, 2009
ESPN Sunday Night Baseball?
marinerdan - April 15, 2009
Day game
Wells claimed to pitch with tunnel vision because he was still drunk/hangover through the course of the game after the night before.
edddgar - April 15, 2009
I didn't like Wells
because he was a Yankee, but I do admire his drunkenness.
marinerdan - April 15, 2009
I work in the suites
And a couple years ago I was getting a flat bed cart full of beer from the warehouse on the field level beneath the staidum to stock up one of the pantries. I was careless and I had a couple cases of beer fall off and break. This was around the same time of day opposing players start to get to the stadium and we were playing our hated rivals The Padres.
So David Wells walks by as I am cleaning up my spill, stops and says to me “Damn, now THAT’S alcohol abuse.” I’ve never been a fan of that stupid saying but coming from David Wells it was hilarious.
Willie Mays Haze - April 15, 2009
Awesome story.
Wilder. - April 15, 2009
Pure brilliance.
marinerdan - April 15, 2009
I'd have high fived him for saying that
But you must have left out the part where he grabbed a few more off the cart, winked at you, and said, “these fell off and broke as well”
tootthekazoo - April 15, 2009
I was a fielder during the same years
I put a sizable dent in the rightcenter field wall in a similar incident (without the awesome though).
Robert - April 15, 2009
That's awesome.
.Taylor - April 15, 2009
It truly was
I have quite a few fun stories like that from working there as long as I have but that one is by far my favorite.
Willie Mays Haze - April 16, 2009
The only one I've ever watched from start to finish was Gooden's
Way back in the mid 90’s somewhere. I don’t remember much of the game other than feeling completely oblivious to the fact that we lost, while clapping for Gooden. I will always applaud a no-hitter, regardless of who throws it and who they beat with it.
tootthekazoo - April 15, 2009
I dunno...
I’d pretty pissed if the M’s got no hit by some crappy pitch-to-contact pitcher with mediocre stuff, a scenario I feel like we just narrowly avoided several times last season.
sammy - April 15, 2009
I'm with Toot.
Any no-hitter deserves applause, except something like a snow game in Cleveland or something.
Thingray - April 15, 2009
Still a hell of an accomplishment
Sure, a guy could give up warning track bombs on all 27 outs, but it’s still a hell of an accomplishment
tootthekazoo - April 15, 2009
I was (and remain) pissed off at Gooden
It’s not entirely rational, but he took his transcendent talent, dried it, cut it into tiny bits, and snorted it through a rolled up $100. He’s got no real obligation to ‘share’ his talent with me – though if I was paying his salary I wouldn’t be thrilled – but my god what a fucking waste.
So he shook off the coke bugs long enough to half-way come back and he lucked his way into a no-hitter. Bah. Two no-no’s have pissed me off: that one and the Mark Langston/Mike Witt combo in early 1990 – fuck that guy in the fucking neck.
marc w - April 15, 2009
You better be talking about Mike Witt
johnbai - April 15, 2009
Langston trashed the org and city when he escaped.
I hated him in 1990. Hated him.
I hated Witt because he always dominated the M’s – in his career he a yielded a .645 OPS against the M’s. He was 14-7 with an ERA well under 3. More wins than he had against anyone else, most K’s… most HBPs.
marc w - April 15, 2009
Langston was one of the only bright spots on those mid 80's teams
And he was ENTIRELY justified in trashing the organization.
johnbai - April 15, 2009
Yeah, can't recall his name but the manager took a giant steamer on Langston.
If I recall it kind of reached a pinnacle when he refused to go to the bullpen and left Langston on the mound when he was gassed. Dusty Baker on his best day (worst?) couldn’t touch that.
Kermit. - April 15, 2009
This is undeniable, and hell, trashing the city/fan support back then may have been almost justifiable.
But it didn’t change the fact that I considered him Judas.
marc w - April 16, 2009
Dang it Carpenter!
I’m still waiting for the day where his arm just comes off all together.
Slurvey - April 15, 2009
Re: Nady
He was due to be a free agent after this season. If he’s out for the year, does that count as service time? Will he still be a free agent?
Teej - April 15, 2009
Yes he will
marinerdan - April 15, 2009
If this logic actually held true, we'd be able to claim Bedard for an extra season.
esoteric - April 15, 2009
It's a legit question because Ankiel has been on the Cardinals for 10 years and hasn't been a FA yet.
JI - April 15, 2009
40-man roster, right?
I thought they took him off the 40-man after his… problems…
seattlebruin - April 15, 2009
I have no idea
He had TJ and a knee surgery too
JI - April 15, 2009
Yeah, that's true.
Teej - April 15, 2009
Still has to be on the DL, so he accumulates service time
the only way around it would be to just cut him, but then you’d have to pay him anyway, so it kind of defeats the point.
seattlebruin - April 15, 2009
Service time only matters for the first 3 years.
Once you hit arby you’re at it for four years regardless of how much you play, unless I’m badly mistaken
Corco - April 15, 2009
I think you're mistaken.
Teej - April 15, 2009
Miss Taken
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 15, 2009
You're right
Practically it never happens though because players with more than 3 years of service time almost never get optioned to the minors and DL time counts as service time
Corco - April 15, 2009
With his sore rib Carpenter should not do what I just did.
I burped out the tune that CBS use for their NFL coverage when they goto a commercial. It was pretty epic.
marinerdan - April 15, 2009
That's, uh, quite a feat.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 15, 2009
Well this is certainly the kind of thing it makes sense to share with everyone.
Aaron Campeau - April 15, 2009
Yeah my thoughts exactly.
marinerdan - April 15, 2009
I think you misinterpreted acblue's comment.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 15, 2009
Not a chance.
marinerdan - April 15, 2009
LL LJ.
Matthew - April 15, 2009
Triunfel is out 4 to 6 months.
Here.
CapSea - April 15, 2009
Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck
abender20 - April 15, 2009
Well fuck :(
BrianL - April 15, 2009
Sweet.
Aaron Campeau - April 15, 2009
Yay.
We can look forward to Triunfel’s return AND the G.I. Joe movie at just about the same time.
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 15, 2009
Flagged
for dipshitism
johnbai - April 15, 2009
You know I'm only mean to you because I like you right?
johnbai - April 15, 2009
To yourself?
Are you winking at yourself in the mirror right now?
tootthekazoo - April 15, 2009
He's so narcissistic.
kevin_ess - April 15, 2009
Prick.
kevin_ess - April 15, 2009
I'm only mean to me because I hate me.
kevin_ess - April 15, 2009
Well done.
marinerdan - April 15, 2009
I'm only being kind
because I thought that was funny.
marinerdan - April 15, 2009
And you only drink so much because you cry all the time, right?
tootthekazoo - April 15, 2009
Basically, yes.
That and it steadies the DTs.
kevin_ess - April 15, 2009
Hypen To the DL as well
Tricep Tendonitis… according to Baker.
MfaninAlaska - April 15, 2009
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 15, 2009
Today-sucks.
CapSea - April 15, 2009
So Felix day comes tomorrow now. Bedard on Friday.
Who starts on Saturday?
Sec 108 - April 15, 2009
Jaku?
CapSea - April 15, 2009
maybe
Sec 108 - April 15, 2009
Maybe they'll push Silva's start up.
That would be awesome.
Aaron Campeau - April 15, 2009
Fuck no Felix day on Friday then
But YAY I get to see Bedard live, which I’ve not done yet!
tootthekazoo - April 15, 2009
Not so fast.
Per Baker:
kevin_ess - April 15, 2009
Yay I get to see Felix on Friday!
BrianL - April 15, 2009
Yay back to being a Felix day!
I’m totally ok with either guy pitching, but I’ve seen Felix live before so I wanted something knew. Oh well
tootthekazoo - April 15, 2009
A new day, a new way.
Felix will pitch a perfect game for you.
Shit, I just jinxed it. Second time I did that today.
Wilder. - April 15, 2009
Jerk.
kevin_ess - April 15, 2009
Thank God I bought tickets for Friday and not Saturday.
I’d hate for the first two games I see at Safeco this year to be Silva starts.
BrianL - April 15, 2009
Oh just go ahead and kick me in the balls already, God.
Aaron Campeau - April 15, 2009
Wait what?
BrianL - April 15, 2009
I guess now's the time to convert Morrow to a starter.
JI - April 15, 2009
Since this seems to be the "around baseball" thread...
A couple of baseball thoughts:
1) The way Justin Upton has been used should be criminal. He was benched 3 games just because he started the season 0 for 9.
2) Jonathon Sanchez is a beast.
3) Adam Jones is too =(.
4) Baltimore had “great potential team” written all over it, but it would have all had to come together at once. Any chance it can?
CapSea - April 15, 2009
Bob Melvin needs to be burned at the stake.
Goose - April 15, 2009
Baltimore would have a reasonable chance of competing right now in any other division in baseball.
Aaron Campeau - April 15, 2009
They would be the best team in any West division.
CapSea - April 15, 2009
That's not true.
Their pitching is beyond horrible.
Matthew - April 15, 2009
Their tRA is terrible.
So I guess you are right. I was assumption that their pitching staff was underrated, but since I see no evidence to back that up I retract my statement.
CapSea - April 15, 2009
I'm not sure that they're better than the Angels, A's and Mariners
and I’m quite certain they’re not better than the Giants, Dodgers and D-Backs.
Aaron Campeau - April 15, 2009
Really?
They’re not better than the Giants?
CapSea - April 15, 2009
No?
Aaron Campeau - April 15, 2009
Okay.
I believe you. I could have sworn they were a better team.
CapSea - April 15, 2009
The Giants aren't any great shakes but they're decent.
Aaron Campeau - April 15, 2009
I hope so.
I have a £50 bet on them to win the National League.
marinerdan - April 15, 2009
That doesn't seem wise...
kevin_ess - April 15, 2009
They're not who I would pick but there's a case to be made.
Aaron Campeau - April 15, 2009
I suppose, but there are some pretty good NL teams.
kevin_ess - April 15, 2009
Depending on the answer to my question below, definitely.
marc w - April 15, 2009
They're not favourites by any stretch.
But there’s no fun in betting on the Mets or Phils or Cubs, I like to go for the outsiders. I had 80/1 on the Rays last year to win the WS…so close.
marinerdan - April 15, 2009
What are the odds?
marc w - April 15, 2009
33 to 1
marinerdan - April 15, 2009
I would take that bet all day long.
Aaron Campeau - April 15, 2009
Yessir. Maybe not for 50 GBP, but I'd lay something on that.
marc w - April 15, 2009
Well only 25 of it was my own money.
Paddy Power were matching your stake.
marinerdan - April 15, 2009
I like the way you and paddy power operate.
marc w - April 15, 2009
We have a love- hate relationship.
marinerdan - April 15, 2009
Actually, yeah, that's pretty good.
kevin_ess - April 15, 2009
So would the Blue Jays.
marc w - April 15, 2009
Yup.
The Blue Jays got totally boned last season.
Aaron Campeau - April 15, 2009
And yet I think they're better now
pitching’s worse thanks to injuries, but I think their offense may be better and hey, Purcey is ~ mlb average starter, so…..
marc w - April 15, 2009
I think they might be better on true-talent
but their run prevention last year was nuts. A lot of that was the result of luck, but to be as good as they were AND benefit from that sort of luck and still finish third in your division is a harsh toke.
Aaron Campeau - April 15, 2009
Good point.
Still, their offense wasn’t doing them any favors last year. Better O, worse D… gets them to around the same place. And yeah, that place would annihilate the AL West.
marc w - April 15, 2009
Adam Lind has really impressed me.
I’m sure it’s unsustainable but still it’s nice to see.
marinerdan - April 15, 2009
Lind is for real.
I’ve been praying the Jays would get sick of him and dump him like Josh Phelps, but no such luck.
Also: Travis Snider. I can imagine that he might be a year or three away, but he’s an amazing hitter.
marc w - April 15, 2009
They've both kind of snuck up on me.
I’d never heard too much about them until this season, I guess it’s because the M’s minor league teams don’t really play the Jays affiliates.
marinerdan - April 15, 2009
Upton has looked pretty crappy
swinging at all kinds of stuff out of the zone, but I completely agree, he’s a young kid with a boat load of talent and you have to let him fight his way through it.
