Jackson had flu-like symptoms as he approached his start, the same bug that's been invading the Tigers clubhouse all week.
"He was sick as a dog. I was really worried about him whether he was going to hold up," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "But he went out there and got through it. It was a courageous effort."
...
"I just felt weak," Jackson said. "I'm not sure if it's a slight case of what's going around, but I was not fully energized."
...
In the first, after running to back up third on a one-out double by Endy Chavez, Jackson said he nearly threw up.
A lot of times players will say something that their opponents use as bulletin board material to get amped up for the next game. This is the opposite of that.

So Washburn also had some sort of sickness his last start and did well.
Hmm…

Indeed.
We should find a rabies-infested weasel to put into Silva’s locker before today’s game.
Omerta - April 19, 2009
Just makes it slightly more embarassing
gregrabble - April 19, 2009
Sick or not,
I thought his stuff looked really solid tonight. That slider was nasty.
sammy - April 19, 2009
Got the overwhelming majority of his swinging strikes
Jeff Sullivan - April 19, 2009
Matt Joyce is the new Bobby Kielty!
JI - April 19, 2009
Oddly, this often seems to come out after someone has a good game.
I always figured it was that they feel too crappy to overthink things.
msb - April 19, 2009
We are the anti-Rangers.
Aaron Campeau - April 19, 2009
That's not exactly a bad thing
cwel87 - April 19, 2009
As long as the W/L record reflects that, all will be well.
abender20 - April 19, 2009
Rangers lost 2-0 as well
Couldn’t score against Zack Greinke, who at least is good. Twice had a man at third, one on a leadoff triple and once on a leadoff double and sac bunt, and failed to score both times. Millwood pitched a complete game and took the loss.
Inkara1 - April 19, 2009
That sounds a lot like last night.
yuniform - April 19, 2009
That's funny because I had similar reactions when he pitched for the Rays.
R.J. Anderson - April 19, 2009
I highly doubt you shutout the Mariners.
Robert - April 19, 2009
Mmmmm....
Yea…..
ThundaPC - April 19, 2009
Does anyone in baseball ever just straight up have the flu?
It sounds like possible hangover otherwise.
JY - April 19, 2009
from the CDC
Influenza (also known as the flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The flu is different from a cold. The flu usually comes on suddenly and may include these symptoms:
* Fever (usually high)
* Headache
* Extreme tiredness
* Dry cough
* Sore throat
* Runny or stuffy nose
* Muscle aches
* Stomach symptoms, such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, also can occur but are more common in children than adults
These symptoms are usually referred to as “flu-like symptoms.” "

Hey look! Saturday morning!
Kermit. - April 19, 2009
Well, at least there was no ground lost on the AL West.
I mean, if there had to be a night to lose, last night would’ve been it.

LOLOLOLOLOL IBANEZ
Go to MLB Gameday RIGHT NOW. Go the Padres/Phillies game. Click on the video highlight from the top of the 3rd that says “Gonzalez’s triple.”
I think you already know what you’re going to find. Suffice to say it would be another immortal addition to the Ibanez Collection.
esoteric - April 19, 2009
This sounds good, on my way!
marinerdan - April 19, 2009
Ok that was excellent!
marinerdan - April 19, 2009
Ahahah he completely missed the ball.
EnglishMariner - April 19, 2009
It's the way he flips around on the ground like an epileptic spider monkey that really makes it immortal.
Also, the thinly-disguised disgust of the announcers.
esoteric - April 19, 2009
I loved the flop the most.
His diving angle ensures he either turns a fairly “routine” shoestring catch into a highlight stab, or entirely misses the ball with no hope of keeping it in front of him should the highlight plan fail.
abender20 - April 19, 2009
I like the constant replays.
Most highlights only show one, but that needed three in rapid-fire succession.
Raul’s pouty glove slap is also pretty great.
Link to the gameday.
yuniform - April 19, 2009
Lets see if this works
Matthew - April 19, 2009
The desperate hands and knees first effort after he flops around is awesome.
abender20 - April 19, 2009
Should this be place on the sideboard for Ibanez?
Or was that closed with his Mariner Career?
joof - April 19, 2009
I think it should be sidebarred.
Because although he is no longer with us, we can still enjoy the hilarity.
Goose - April 19, 2009
Remember, though.
Raul worked like a maniac to get into shape to make that play.
msb - April 19, 2009
PADRE FEVER!
WOOOOOOOOOOOO
Jeff Sullivan - April 19, 2009
Well done, Matthew.
esoteric - April 19, 2009
Mine was of better quality and received more recs
JI - April 19, 2009
This is also, in a way, on-topic...
…because for those who are upset about the trade-off we’ve made between run-prevention and run-production, just remember: it could always be worse.
