A leaderboard of the best fielders in all of baseball, by UZR:
That's three Mariners in the top ten. As a team, the Ms top both UZR and UZR/150 and are more than 50% better than second place in Range.
By the way, according to FanGraphs, Endy Chavez has been worth 0.9 wins so far this season. Raul Ibanez is at 0.8, and that's with his defense being called average so far.

But of course.

How many wins is Gutz projected to be worth at this pace?
.Taylor - April 20, 2009
Don't forget
That’s just Endy’s UZR in LF. He’s also been excellent in RF. His overall UZR is +3.6.

Wait what Hanley Ramirez
Graham MacAree - April 20, 2009
Sample size maybe?
mlbnotebook - April 20, 2009
Maybe the Natinals have just been hitting a ton of weak grounders to him
OlSalty - April 20, 2009
If he becomes good at defense he will own the world before long.
Sec 108 - April 20, 2009
He's only really had one bad year
last year UZR had him as average while PMR put him at 10 plays over. He’s a nifty little player, and I would love for the Mariners to try and pry him away as his payday approaches. I’d part with Morrow and Clement for him in a heartbeat.
Bearskin Rugburn - April 20, 2009
He's the one paid Marlins player
That, and it would probably take half our farm system to get him.
cwel87 - April 20, 2009
If Hanley Ramirez can play good defence he's the best player in baseball
Graham MacAree - April 20, 2009
But in 2007 he fielded like a deranged robot
Graham MacAree - April 20, 2009
Which makes me suspicious
He was basically dead on average last year in the same number of innings.
Dan Uggla was above average in 2006 and 2008, but also fielded like a deranged robot in 2007. I’m starting to think the problem wasn’t with Uggla/Ramirez……
It’s also worth pointing out that even in 2007, Ramirez rated pretty much dead on average by PMR.

If I were a betting man
I’d put my money on him being -5 < x < 5 for the season. And yeah, I think he’s one of the best players in baseball.
As far as what it would take to get him.. who the hell knows. Prospects are being valued differently now than they have in years past so I wouldn’t expect the Marlins to get any overwhelming Miguel Cabrera type offers. I’m not saying that Clement and Morrow is all it takes, but I’d be happy to send those two packing to the NL if he could be got.
Bearskin Rugburn - April 20, 2009
Like the Marlins would take that trade
JI - April 20, 2009
This makes me feel tingly inside
mlbnotebook - April 20, 2009
Right now Endy is on pace for 10.8 wins.

This makes walks that much more frustrating
Relating to the post below about Silva’s much lower strike rate this year, this defense makes walks by our pitcher’s doubly inexcusable.
Throw a strike and make the other teams hit it somewhere where our defense can’t get it. I’d hope that the pitching coaches are looking at these defensive numbers.

I thought Chris Davis was a butcher.
Has UZR fallen prey to some corollary to the Nichols Law of Catcher Defense?
(Yes, SSS)
abender20 - April 20, 2009
He was a butcher at third base...
but there was little scouting or statistical evidence to support he was a bad FIRST baseman. I don’t trust his UZR right now as indicative of anything, and I think we’ll end up seeing him as an average defensive first baseman in the long run.
Bodhizefa - April 20, 2009
He should be a fine first baseman
Provided he learns to not strike out so damn much.
The Typical Idiot Fan - April 20, 2009
Has Cruz been lauded as a good fielder?
I thought the mark on him was that he’s a good AAAA hitter.
yuniform - April 20, 2009
I don't believe he's ever been considered a defensive problem
Jeff Sullivan - April 20, 2009
Right, yuniform may be thinking of Victor Diaz
although I don’t think Cruz has ever been seen as a good fielder – just not a terrible one.
marc w - April 20, 2009
Just want to take this chance
To talk about my love for David DeJesus. I promise, only 85% of my undying love for him stems from the fact that he went to Rutgers. The other 15% is because he is amazingly underrated. Nobody fucks with DeJesus.

You do the line, but not the picture?
Eyebrows - April 20, 2009
Doing lines leads to an inability to properly post images.
abender20 - April 20, 2009
If I posted the pic
Then you wouldn’t have been able to, now would you!?
Limerickx - April 20, 2009
On the dark side
Guess who’s 8th from the bottom in UZR?
Grumble.
At least he’s better than Michael Young.
Khalil Greene is the worst so far this year, which is surprising.
Jordan Schaefer’s in the bottom 10, too.
yuniform - April 20, 2009
Khalil-bot must need to get his joints greased up
appleshampoo - April 20, 2009
Is anyone else a bit worried about Ichiro?
It seems to me that he’s lost a step. There were a few hit balls that I felt he was a bit slow to get to.
sammy - April 20, 2009
Not worried
Matthew - April 20, 2009
He just came off the DL
and maybe a bleeding ulcer has lasting effects, but I haven’t noticed anything.
Zwakamatsu - April 20, 2009
What month is it again?
ThundaPC - April 20, 2009
In fairness...the whole positive spin of this piece could have that question applied to it.
SethGrandpa - April 20, 2009
I didn't realize Ichiro has a tendency to go into defensive slumps in April.
I know it’s early, but it’s something I’m keeping an eye on. Just saying I thought he looked slow out there last night (by which I mean about average for a right fielder).
sammy - April 20, 2009
I don't know that
he meant that Ichiro was off to a slow statistical start, but that he’s actually physically running slower.
Zwakamatsu - April 20, 2009
Willing to blame the injury for the time being
it’s Ichiro. He’ll be fine.
