I'm not going to read anyone any eulogies - not yet - but I'm beginning to think we sold at the right time.

(To prevent you from getting too big-headed, you should check out what Luis Valbuena's done so far in AAA. Thanks for pointing that one out to me, Dave.)

Whatever, we have Ronny Cedeno!
Matthew - April 20, 2009
And then you should look at what Mike Carp's doing in AAA
Graham MacAree - April 20, 2009
Holy shit, that guy looks good.
I know, I know – a hot streak makes anyone look good, but Carp is killing the ball.
Homered yesterday off Mazzaro, walked and was HBP – to raise his OBP to .490. Plus, he made two amazing grabs at first.
Uh, Ezequiel Carrera still has a .400 OBP too!
marc w - April 20, 2009
Carrera seems to be Endy Chavez with some plate discipline. Not sure if he's a lefty though.
Rudy4three - April 20, 2009
The best part is that the main knock on Carp was lack of power
Graham MacAree - April 20, 2009
He's still not really a home run hitter
but I’d kind of rather a 22yo 1B hit a ton of doubles and some HRs rather than the all-or-nothing style of… I don’t know, Jeff Larish. I’m really enjoying the Daric Barton-when-Daric-Barton-was-good vibe you get w/Carp. And he plays better D than either Larish or Barton, so that’s awesome….
marc w - April 20, 2009
Yes, but not-really-a-homerun-hitter >>>> a guy who can't hit for power
Graham MacAree - April 20, 2009
Oh totally.
Similar to the UZR thing with Ramirez, it’s sort of amazing how often a player (esp. in the minor leagues) is defined by his worst season. He had a shitty ISO-P his first year in Binghamton, so he’s a guy who can’t hit for power. Odd.
marc w - April 20, 2009
He started that way last year and tapered off a little
I hope he pans out for you guys.

Robert - April 20, 2009
Robert, the LL griot.
waldo rojas - April 21, 2009
Yeah, I thought we won that trade the day we made it...
Getting Cedeno and Olson = icing on the cake.
The only loss I foresaw in that deal was Valbuena — and, of course, “Tuesdays with Sean Green” (though not Green himself, really).
Loved that trade then, and love it even more now!
I’m even a little excited about ENDY FREAKIN CHAVEZ!!!!
PositivePaul - April 20, 2009
You know,
I doubt his fastball has really lost so much zip. I remember about week ago the mets were getting blown out and Putz was up so I thought I’d check out what his stuff looks like this year. He was sitting at 91-92, throwing his sorry change up and in the three at bats that I watched I don’t remember any swinging strikes. Maybe there were a couple, but he didn’t seem like he was in control of the at bat.
Then more recently I checked out what he was doing in the 1-0 Santana start. Wholly different pitcher. His fastball was coming in in the mid nineties, and the split looked the same as ever before. Batters looked lost. He got two Ks swinging and a grounder, and was spotting the splitter very well.
But you know what? I don’t give a shit. Putz’ 06 and 07 seasons are special and I loved him then but he was not ever going to repeat them and I’d rather he disappoint NY fans. Fuck Putz.
Bearskin Rugburn - April 20, 2009
So instead of Heat of the Moment he gets Heat from the Moment.
Slurvey - April 20, 2009
If Maikel Cleto ends up putting it all together I will declare this trade to be the greatest in Mariners history
Corco - April 20, 2009
Maikel Cleto needs to get a visa first.
JY - April 20, 2009
Has he tried Capitol One?
HAR
Gihyou - April 21, 2009
Langston for Gene Harris and the other guys will never be topped.
waldo rojas - April 21, 2009
Bragg for Moyer was really good
Rollo Tomasi - April 21, 2009
No, no, no...
You’ve got it mixed up!
It’s Darren Bragg for Heathcliff Slocumb
And
Jamie Moyer for Derek Lowe & Jason Varitek!
There!
(well at least that’s the way I look at it)
PositivePaul - April 21, 2009
JJ Putz = Kenny Powers
CHEAP ROUNDS AT NORM'S - April 20, 2009
He has a cock like a burmese python?
And you know this how?
Willie Mays Haze - April 20, 2009
In the first episode...
it shows a sequence of Powers’ velocity decreasing with each team he goes to, eventually landing him in Seattle, where he gets rocked.
Burmese python knowledge is classified
CHEAP ROUNDS AT NORM'S - April 21, 2009
Luis Valbuena is from Caja Seca, Venezuela.
I hope some of you speak Spanish too.
abender20 - April 20, 2009
Well that's an interesting name for a city.
Mariner John - April 20, 2009
So help a guy out here....
I know nothing of spanish slang. I’m assuming “caja” has the same, uh, double meaning it does in English? What?
marc w - April 20, 2009
Caja is box from what I've learned.
Mariner John - April 20, 2009
Yyyes, that's what I'm getting at.....
marc w - April 20, 2009
If you read it in English it can sound somewhat inappropriate
Whether box has the same double connotation in the Spanish speaking world, I don’t know.
Mariner John - April 20, 2009
It does not, which a town is actually named that.
abender20 - April 20, 2009
I assumed as much.
Mariner John - April 20, 2009
Okay, I'll step in for this one
DRY BOX LOL.
Two Rs and Two Ls - April 21, 2009
Venezuela is Spanish for LOL?
This explains Ozzie Guillen, at least.
Graham MacAree - April 21, 2009
His antics brighten my days like Sean Avery talking shit to a goalie that doesn't speak English.
Faux - April 21, 2009
That would have required a comma after "BOX."
Two Rs and Two Ls - April 21, 2009
My ability to turn that into an Ozzie Guillen joke was the only thing that saved you from the box
Be grateful
Graham MacAree - April 21, 2009
Are you here to tell me what a bad eugoogoolizer I am?
patsfan - April 20, 2009
Or did you think I'd be to stupid to know what a eugoogly was?
dnc - April 21, 2009
Rufus, Brint, and Meekus were like brothers to me.
And when I say brother, I don’t mean, like, an actual brother, but I mean it like the way black people use it. Which is more meaningful I think.
gregrabble - April 21, 2009
He also
has a 10% Line Drive percentage against. We’ve been talking about his strange season (so far) over on Amazin Avenue – he hasn’t been striking a ton of guys out yet, but nobody has hit the ball hard off of him, so it has balanced out. And like someone above said, he looked much better in his last appearance, throwing harder and getting 2 K’s.
cjmulrain - April 21, 2009
He was up to 94.1 in his last game
but then that’s still lower, and the fastest pitch he’s thrown all season – 95.6 (94.6 is #2) – isn’t anywhere close to where he used to top out.
Jeff Sullivan - April 21, 2009
It's probably a tumor.
waldo rojas - April 21, 2009
EETS NOT A TUMAH!
Eyebrows - April 21, 2009
If Morrow ends up better than JJ this year I'll be highly amused
Graham MacAree - April 21, 2009
I think we're already there.
JI - April 21, 2009
If Morrow has a higher WPA than Lincecum this year
I’m going streaking
Bearskin Rugburn - April 21, 2009
If he's used as a closer, he probably will.
He won’t be as valuable, but hey, that’s the methodology…..
marc w - April 21, 2009
Yep
Value’s a different matter. But I wanted him to be better than Lincecum at something. It’s an interesting bet actually.
Bearskin Rugburn - April 21, 2009
True he used to hit 98 when going for the K
Bearskin Rugburn - April 21, 2009
Morrow in, game over
just doesn’t have the same ring to it.
Shawk - April 21, 2009
Morrow in,
You’re sorrowin’
