GAMES

Game 1: Erik Bedard* vs. Shane Loux
Game 2: Carlos Silva vs. Anthony Ortega
Game 3: Jarrod Washburn* vs Jered Weaver

Erik Bedard looks to continue rolling and faces off against our opponent in the home opener, Shane Loux. Loux is no prospect; he's really something akin to our Chris Jakubauskus except probably a touch better. He doesn't throw strikes and he doesn't miss bats, but does get ground balls. If the Mariners actually made a cognizant game plan, they would be patient and wait for Loux to pitch himself into hitter's counts requiring him to throw his pedestrian junk in their wheelhouse. Instead, they'll be swing happy and consistently ground out over and over again. Any rally that starts to maybe suggest that it could form sometime in the future will be squashed by an immediate double play ball. Hopefully we can win on an error again.

Anthony Ortega split last year between Double and Triple-A with most of the time spent in Double-A Arkansas. The 23-year-old has middling strikeout and walk rates, especially for the minor leagues. His batted ball profile is mundane and he shows nothing extraordinary on his pitch profile either. Essentially perusing his various numbers, he looks like a run of the mill minor league starter. tRA agrees with this. He's not even Quad-A quality, but firmly Triple-A. With Carlos Silva on the mound, as weird as this sounds, this should be a big advantage for us since the Angels' line up is so righty-heavy.

The battle of Jareds! The Angels version has settled into being a slightly above-average strikeout-to-walk pitcher with a rather big flyball fetish. In so doing, he's turned out so far to be slightly better than I pegged him for back in 2006 based on his stuff, motion and core results, and far far far worse than your typical Angel fan pegged him for based on things like HR/FB, BABIP and amount and quality of SoCal-approved hair.

Star-divide

The rotation and bullpen continued to gain steam over the series with Tampa, even with the 9-run defeat on Wednesday. The lineup however, fell another seven runs against average just over those three games and as a result the team's overall profile lost a 1.5 runs versus average, not counting defense.

THIS SERIES BROUGHT TO YOU BY:

Pizza Port Hop 15
Port Brewing/Lost Abbey. San Marcos, CA

"15 of our favorite hops which were added every 15 minutes to the boil."

Yeah, it's not big on balance, but it has a wonderful blend of hops flavors, from pine to grapefruit to more astringent and more traditional citrus as well. And while it doesn't have much in the way of a malt backing, the palate is still smooth and not overly bitter. Also, it clocks in at 10.5% ABV and it masks that very well.

So we really are the worst hitting team in the majors

can’t say I’m the least bit surprised

We're worst, Oakland is 2nd worst, Angels 7th worst.

Yeah…

Oakland and Anaheim had to face our awesome run prevention though
The Port beer reminds me....

What are your thoughts on Midnight Sessions, that black lager they produce?

I enjoyed it.
Yeah, so did I.

Different, but well done.

Good to know, I'm always hesitant.
I like how the battle of Jareds

doesn’t actually involve a Jared.

I'm gonna take Jarrod in the battle of the Jareds.
All of a sudden I want a Subway sandwich and I'm not sure why
Subliminal messaging does work!
With the Angels sending three meh to ugh righties to the mound

I’m looking for both Branyan and Griffey to go deep this series. I will be sorely disappointed if they don’t.

I am going to cry when/if Griffey goes yard
When Griffey goes yard on Sunday, I will only be loud just to be obnoxious to the Angels fans.

I’ll be silent on the inside.

Something about that

seems backwards…

I had no idea Shane Loux and Anthony Ortega existed until today.
The M's have already faced Loux this year.
I must have been in a coma at the time.
It's right in the first sentence of the whole bloody post!
against our opponent in the home opener Shane Loux
To be fair, Shane Loux is a pretty non-descript pitcher who pitched a pretty non-descript game against

the only way he could have been more generic is if his name was Joe Williams or something and he was #33 or some such

Bill Krueger even made a funny* about it!
  • “No such Loux”
Loux is such an anonymous pitcher, I glazed right over that sentence.
So was our offense
"was"?
Yes at the time they "were"
This is assuming that the offense actually woke up from its coma.
Wasn't there a Jarrod/Jered battle last time we dealt with Los Angeles?

I could’a sworn…

Yes, in the 11-3 game.
Hopefully the sequel turns out just as well.

Although I doubt Jr. will hit #400 as a Mariner in that one.

Hop 15 is my very favorite beer right now.
Not exactly something crazy, but this is my favorite beer lately:

http://www.newbelgium.com/beer/mothership-wit

Naw

way better, see!

That one's not organic
Still, I shoul try it.

I seem to be on a Belgian Wheat beer kick lately.

Do you know if you can find that in the Seattle area?
You can get it at Ballard Market (which means most Town and COuntry Markets, generally,) Bottleworks and Pike Street Beer and Wine

Pike Street Beer and Wine is my new favorite store in the whole wide world.

Bit far from home for me,

but I could check Ballard Market one of these days.

If you work in Shoreline you could always try Top Foods.

Their beer selection is pretty decent, especially for Belgians. Greenwood Market has it too, which is closer than Ballard Market. Isn’t there a Town and Country up in Shoreline?

Not that I know of.

Other than going to work I don’t spend a lot of time in the area. But I might check Top. They might even have it at Top Foods up in Everett for that matter. They do have a really good beer section.

Central Market just off of Aurora at 155th should have it.
I thought about that too.
That is a rather awesome store

even if they don’t have AV Summer Solstice yet.

They had it on their website as a new to store thing, but I didn't see it which was annoying.

Their prices are pretty fantastic though; Oskar Blues Gordon for $2.99 a can!

Mothership

Is also findable at Safeway and QFC. At least, that’s where my husband finds it…

Mothership has been easy to find for me.

They have it up at Everett Top Foods.

Eel River Organic IPA and a damned fine beer.
I'm kind of burnt out on IPA's right now.

But I’ll have to give that one a try as well.

It's really more like a pale than an IPA.

It’s really mellow.

You know I don't like IPAs

But this is more like a pale? I may have to risk it.

It's a tweener.
Like Robert?
He may tweak but at least he can handle an IPA.
You're wonderful, Matthew.
I had a Mannys for the first time at the ball park

made by Georgetown, it turns out.

“Manny’s Pale Ale: A careful selection of Northwest hops, premium barley, and our unique yeast give this ale a rich and complex malty middle with a snappy hop finish. It’s truly a micro that finishes crisp, clean, and smooth. Two-row Pale, Crystal, and Cara-Pilsner Malt. Magnum and Cascade hops. IBU’s: 37. Original gravity 1.052 (13 Plato). Finishing gravity 1.010 (2.5 Plato). English Ale yeast. Alcohol by Volume: 5.5%.”

I would be ok with Manny's if it hadn't replaced Mirror Pond in every bar in town.
Mann'y has always tasted kind of...off I guess is the best way to put it.

Just something about it and I’m not sure what it is.

I never got why bars have both Manny's and Mac's.

They taste very similar to me.

Of course, most bars seem to just have 7 ambers, a crappy IPA and Guinness on tap.

Is there a bock? Nooooo
Is there a porter? Rarely.
Different types of stouts? ….

My love of dive bars and hatred for the beer selection at most dive bars are in constant struggle.
These beer subthreads will be much more exciting in .5-2.5 years depending on my latitude.
How does the scale of greatness go for these previews

Is !!! better than Seattle?

I'd say this is a logical assumption given that our defense is ranked #1 and theirs is third-to-last and that point has the most exclamation points for us.
The overall column is exempt from the scale.
Otherwise, it wouldn't make any sense.
It was confusing.
What's the over/under on the number of games before our bullpen starts acting like we all know they're supposed to act?

Or do you think they’re really that good as a unit? I know Morrow should be fine, and I hold hope that Lowe and Aardsma can be respectable. But I worry about the others.

Game 3 against Minnesota
I never understood all the fretting about the bullpen.

They’re fine. It’s obviously the weak link on the run prevention side but there’s no reason to expect it to implode.

I just don't think we can expect such performance for the whole season.

Walk after walk after walk is going to bite us later on down the road. Our bullpen is fifth in the league in walks (28) and seventh in BB/9 (5.21). I don’t think the bullpen’s 3.35 FIP will hold up if they continue to walk the world. I suppose an implosion is unlikely, but they can’t keep this up, can they?

Well, you can get away with BBs if you strike batters out.

Morrow, Lowe, Aardsma, and Kelley can all get the K when they need it. The non strikeout pitchers are all groundballers as well, so while Corco, Batista, and White are our weak links in the pen, they can avoid some of the problems with all the walks by getting grounders.

I mean, we’re gonna allow some homers, and our pen will give up some runs, but they’re not going to fall apart. Plus, Morrow seems to have found his command somewhat (that umpire yesterday was terrible), and Kelley has good command. I’d expect to see that BB/9 come down.

To clarify, you can't get away with ALL walks because you strke people out.

But it helps lessen the harm of the walk.

"I don’t think the bullpen’s 3.35 FIP will hold up if they continue to walk the world."

Well since the walks are a major part of FIP…

Now that I take a closer look at FIP, you're right.

The walks don’t have as much to do with FIP, and I used it a bit out of context. Chalk that up to my limited knowledge of such things. I was looking for an indicator of their performance and jumped on FIP. Thanks for pointing that out.

It's certainly not optimal, but you can't focus ion the weaknesses and ignore the strengths.

They walk a lot of people but they strike a lot of people out and don’t tend to allow solid contact. When you build your bullpen from the scrap heap you’ve gotta take the good with the bad.

Our pen gets a lot of Ks so the walks are not such a big deal

as long as they can also keep the ball in the park. Also, I really doubt they will maintain this walk rate. Aardsma, Lowe, and Morrow have all been much, much sharper lately than they were to start the season.

You all make good points.

I really hope they continue to do so well. I guess the last few years have just caused me to expect doom.

Would it make sense that the "hard throwers" would have more trouble finding their release point early on?
The idea that curve balls and sliders are supposed to be harder on the arm has been on my mind.

I wonder if they will be more effective after building up some arm strength, and if the M’s will flip the switch at some point and start mixing more off speed stuff into the mix.

That could have something to do with it.
Do you guys write these beer reviews yourselves?

Or are you getting them somewhere else. If it’s a personal critique, whoever writes them (Matthew I presume?) has quite the beer vocabulary.

Pretty sure Matthew writes them.
Unless the words are in block quotes or italics, such as the first sentence of this edition,

all words are mine.

I anxiously await your review of MGD
`

Poured with a clear golden yellow hue accompanied by a small carbonated cola head. Aroma is lacking of any real presence, though has a hint of the grasses you’d expect to find in a US macro. Taste is clean and unremarkable. Grass water.

Surprisingly thorough and gracious
Yet lacking any use of the word genuine.
Sometimes I write beer reviews as homilies!
Very gracious.

Take out “grass water” and it’s almost something I’d try!

MGD is what I buy when in a mini-mart with horrible beer selection.
I usually end up with Henry's or Corona in that circumstance.
Henry's was my gateway from Beast Ice to quality ale.
That's exactly what it was for me too.

That was the first beer that led me into trying different “styles” of beer, even if they weren’t the best versions.

Mmmmm Henry's Blue Boar, my favorite summertime yardwork beer.

Usually only a buck more expensive than a half rack of Bud, I don’t get it.

I still have no idea what Blue Boar is supposed to BE
Neither do I....
It's supposed to be a pale ale, but it sure as hell tastes like a lager to me.
It tastes lighter than Henry's lager.

i don’t know what it tastes like.

According to the commerical description on Rate Beer:
A light-bodied, aromatic, Irish-style specialty ale. Double-hopped with PAcific Northwest Cascade hops for the flavor and smoothness of a traditional ale without bitterness of heaviness.

Link

Irish style?

Interesting.

Tastes like peat smoke and depression!
Do you taste any of that in Blue Boar?

And Kermit, I’m not saying it’s awful (though I don’t care for it all that much), I’m just really confused by it.
I’ve been to Ireland, and I never once had anything remotely like this. I’ve had cascade hops, and I don’t taste any of them in the beer.
No bitterness or heaviness? Check and check! So they got that part right.

I taste next to nothing in Blue Boar! It has a flavor my palette is unable to define.

Which is why I drink IPA’s almost exclusively when I want a tasty beer, it takes dynamite to register on my tongue. I find that description very amusing.

It’s my go-to fridge beer for cheap stuff, and great on hot summer days when I’m working and enjoy something light. I like to keep these things as simple as possible, the Keep It Simple Stupid principle is my favorite way to operate.

And by flavor I mean there is something there I don't find in Bud, but not much.

Bud always leaves me with a weird after taste, I’m at a loss to describe it without getting gross. I have a hard time describing my taste in beer without using the word phlegm.

This point I had never conciously considered before. Quite the puzzler now that you mention it.
The secret ingredient, duh
I picked up a 6 pack of Hamm's 16oz cans yesterday.

I was feeling cheap and it happened to be the cheapest thing in the store (3.88 including the bottle deposit). It was better than I expected, meaning it was better than OE 40’s and Bud.

I love Hamm's. How could you not?

FROOOOMM THE LAND OF SKY BLUUUEE WAAAA-AAAATERS
Absolutely.

I have some once a year or so.

It’s really hard to fathom now that beer ads featuring cartoon woodland creatures were commonplace when some of us were growing up. Or maybe the weirdness is more in the fact that cartoon beer ads were totally okay while ANY TV ads for hard liquor were totally beyond the pale.

All regional beer advertising pre-1995 or so is amazing.
Was it Rainier that had the bottles marching in single file?

The ads had to have been mid-80’s because I remember them as part of the Chuck Knox era Seahawks games.

The Wild Rainiers, yep

Here and here.

Yes. Just beat me to it.

The Rainier bottle ads (my friend still sort of hates the Pike for hanging an original one in the brewpub) were great, the old motorcycle ones, the Rain Dog (eh, ok, not that great, but hey), etc.

RAAAAAAIIIIIINNNNNIIIIIIEEEEERRRRRR BEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRrrrrrrr....

I used to love that when I was a kid.

Well, maybe not ALL, but this is generally true.

I think you still had some regional beers doing cut-rate versions of old Busch or Coors ads which just seem mind-bendingly stupid now (although Coors is still at it; they’re so against the grain and so aggressively dumb that they have a nostalgic charm).

But yes: the Rainier ads were genius.

What was the one where they were searching for artesians?
Wasn't that Oly?
I SEEN 'EM!
This just made my day because those commercials are like my favorite thing in the entire world.
Always happy to help make your day.
Could have been.

I know it was local..

It definitely was.

Oly used to be brewed with water from the artesian wells under Olympia.

That's right.

Now the brewery is closed.

>:(

I know, kind of pisses me off every time I drive by it.
It makes me fly into a blind rage whenever I drive by and/or think about it.
Yeah; the 5 o'clock whistle still sounds in Oly

but the brewery is no more.

The Rainier brewery being taken over by a coffee company and kitted out to look like every god damn condo project in the past 10 years used to really rile me up (I don’t drink coffee), but I’m past it.
I got used to this very early when Heidelberg abandoned Tacoma (a harbinger of the collapse of local lagers in the 80s-90s; it’s sort of amazing Oly/Rainier held out as long as they did). I have to say I saw some amazing shows in the guts of the old brewery… weird acoustics.

Apparently the plan is to turn the Oly brewery into artists studios.

I think I’ve heard that same idea somewhere else before…

They've been planning that with the Rainier brewery too if I recall
I'm pretty sure you're right.
My first ever legal beer was a King Beer of Hamm's at the Kingdome.
I've never had to resort to this.

But I live in SoCal where every mini-mart at least has some Pacifico or Negro Modelo.

Actually, most mini-marts up here have some somewhat suitable beer choices.
I love Portland

I went to 7-11 yesterday to buy a soda for my wife and found that they carry both Ninkasi and Lompoc. At 7-11. BEAUTIFUL.

Mmm...LSD...
And C-Note...
Unfortunately all they seem to sell in most stores is C-Note

at least around here, as far as I’ve seen.

Are we still talking about beer?
I want to live in Portland.

After living in a bunch of other places.

Don't move here now unless you have a job

13% unemployment! Whee!

That's the only reason I didn't move there after college.
It's that high in Portland?

Ouch.

Just announced this week.

And I wouldn’t blink an eye if the real rate were closer to 20% – the 13% figure only includes people currently drawing the dole, not those who have exhausted their benefit or who gave up looking. It’s pretty grim.

Most of my friends that left Oly for Portland are un(or under)employed at the moment.
Four of my friends have lost their jobs in the last two weeks

in four separate industries/job categories.

No better up here.

I know at least six people that have lost their jobs in the past month.

Our unemployment rate is still about half what Oregon's is.

Which is little consolation to people that have lost their jobs, but I know a ton of people that are in love with Portland and still planning to move.

If you're going to be unemployed, might as well be somewhere you like.
My younger brother has been looking for work for six months

and hasn’t been able to find anything. He’s all but given up at this point.

I recommend crack sales or prostitution

recession-proof!

I always assumed that porn was also recession proof

but I have a friend that edits adult movies for his day job and apparently he can’t find a lot of projects to work on either.

The best beer I've ever seen at a 7-11 in Seattle is probably Fat Tire.
There's usually something from Red Hook or Widmer as well.
I'd generally rather drink a cheap macro than drink Red Hook or Widmer.
I would drink Pacifico over Fat Tire.

I’m a fan of New Belgium but not of (bottled) Fat Tire.

Eh, it's not terrible.

I think I burned myself out on it though, seeing as how I used to live next door to a 7-11.

Fat Tire is MUCH better out of the tap.

Moreso then most beers for some reason.

I think Ambers in general are much better on tap than bottled.

More than other styles.

I'd agree with that, though I think Alaskan is a tasty beverage bottled

it just doesn’t taste like Alaskan on tap.

I still enjoy plenty of bottled ambers, but the difference between bottle-tap seems to be most noticable with that style.
I've never though about that before,

but you’re right. It does seem to be the ambers that have the biggest difference in taste.

I'm glad it's not just in my head.
Not even up here.

I usually get one of their other offerings. Their IPA is pretty good.

Including Pacifico and Negra Modelo, at minimum.

both of which are pretty damn good summer yardwork beers for me.

My fiancee likes Corona,

so if I’m just buying “toss in the fridge” beer, that’s usually where I end up.

I like Pacifico better

but the clear bottles always make it a sort of hot-or-miss proposition.

Fair point.

Pacifico is a fine lager – esp. for one so ubiquitous.

Clear bottles annoy me more than just about anything beer related.
You are a man of many annoyances.

(But I share this one)

I dislike a lack of common sense.
I agree it doesn't make sense.

But my beer seldom stays around long enough for me to care all that much.

Less about how long it lasts once you've got it

and more about how long it’s been on the shelf.

You do have to be careful about that.

But you can usually check the date on the packaging.

Common sense is a lot less common than its name would indicate

which is annoying.

Isn't Pacifico in a brown bottle?
Oh hey....

Of course you’re right.

I only know this from bartending at a Mexican restaurant

back in the day. I like Modelo and Pacifico the best of those beers.

I really should know from drinking it.
Yeah, it is.

Corona is in a clear.

I'll be damned, you're right.

I was thinking of Sol.

Sol is on par with Corona for me.

Modelo is also in a clear and is better than both.

I greatly prefer Sol to Corona.

Corona is one of my least favorite beers.

Corona is easily in my bottom 3 beers, maybe the worst.

I can’t believe it’s classed as beer.

My dad thinks I have bad taste in beer because I don't like Corona.

Of course he also insists that ale and beer are two entirely different things, so he’s not really someone whose opinion I value too highly on the subject.

My dad thinks I am a alcoholic based on the fact that I was drunk when I broke my elbow and don't remember how I chipped my tooth
This isn't relevant

Good going dumb dumb

Does he know you're 21?
Corona is total shit.

I’ve only had Sol a few times, and every time I thought “this shit tastes justs like Corona.”

I think Sol is easily quite a bit better but I don't really have enough of a horse in this race to care all that much.
Modelo comes in 24oz cans.

That’s my workaround for the clear bottle.

I think Bohemia is my favorite.
Good call. Forgot that one.
And yet another Angel with a bad wing....

Surprise face!

I can't believe he beat Griffey.
Who won the pool?
Chuck Armstrong.
Awesome answer!

Just awesome

Quite well played.
Ha, never would've guessed that my first "green" comment

would be “Chuck Armstrong.”

(First that I know of/remember anyway)
Off to the game!!!

Go M’s!!

Hey there you sexy brewers!
