Ichiro Placed on DL

Story Link from Larry Stone

PEORIA, Ariz. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced today that All-Star outfielder Ichiro Suzuki will be placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 31, and will miss the first week of the regular season.

Ichiro had been suffering severe fatigue, causing him to miss the Mariners last three Cactus League games (March 30-April 1). He was examined by doctors in Arizona who determined that he had suffered a bleeding ulcer. The ulcer is not bleeding now, but in the interim, doctors have ordered restricted activity.

"It was a very difficult decision to place Ichiro on the disabled list," Zduriencik said, "especially since we know what a fierce competitor he is, and how important it is to him to help the team. However, we determined it was in both his best interest, and the best interest of the club, to place him on the DL at this time."

Ichiro will be eligible to return to Major League games on Wednesday, April 15.

Shit.

More from Stone

From what I can gather with a couple of quick calls, the Mariners are very hopeful Ichiro will be ready to play on April 15, when he's eligible to come off the disabled list. If that's the case, this is not a huge blow. He would miss just eight games, and be back for the second game of the team's first homestand at Safeco, facing the Angels.

That's some relief at least.

Oh fuck

:(

This is, to me, like finding out a relative is in the hospital or something. I honestly got a stomach ache just now. Thank goodness it’s not serious.

At least it's just an ulcer I guess
People used to die from bleeding ulcers.

I think the treatment has come a ways since then.

From experience they can be fixed rather quickly.
Another little shitty part of the timing:
Ichiro will be eligible to return to Major League games on Wednesday, April 15.

So he’s missing the home opener too.

That's not cool.

Not cool at all

Which pretty much guarantees Griffey in the OF.
Griffey was going to be in the OF for the home opener regardless
I had convinced myself otherwise.
I couldn't imagine a scenario where he wouldn't be unless his leg fell off

and even then they’d find a way.

Losing a leg isn't such a big deal

Hell...

Griffey has played the OF like he has had one leg for the past 5 years. If anybody can do it without a leg, it’s him.

SAVING BASEBALL ALL OVER AGAIN FOR SEATTLE
Here is hoping he plays RF on opening day.
You know.

Since the front office can’t screw up the team anymore the Baseball Gods are trying newer, more creative ways to screw us over.

On the plus side if it turns out it was caused by stress than we can put to rest the claim that Ichiro doesn't care
He only gets ulcers for Japan, though.
First DL stint of his career!
Is it too early to rest all the blame on Geoff Baker's door?
That's right, he only got ulcers after being questioned about his leadership
Any hints of this during the WBC?

His play seemed strangely un-Ichiro (especially that dropped fly ball in foul territory) until he went crazy in the championship game.

Carlos Silva gave Ichiro an ulcer?
Carlos Silva IS the ulcer.
Ichiro is a selfish bastard for caring so much
Ichiro hurts the team by caring about winning?
This guy takes the WBC so damn serious he gets a bleeding ulcer..

Relax Ichiro it’s just baseball dude

At least Endy Chavez is on fire at the plate.

But who plays in right field? Endy or Wlad? And if Endy is in RF, does that mean more Griffey in LF? I say yes as much as I don’t want to see it.

So does Wilson get to break camp with the team?

I like Endy in LF and Wlad in RF for the time being

Wouldn't someone have to get bumped of the 40-man to get Wilson on the roster?
off*
I think there is an empty spot now

with Tyler Walker’s release.

That's right, we're not full on the 40 yet.
There's 3 spots

Walker’s gone, Morse is gone, and Lugo is gone

and now Corona's gone

Make that 4

4

Reegie Corona is gone

Well. Lets get looting.

WHAT. THE FUCK.

I called this last night when I was talking to my roommates. I said that if something was wrong with Ichiro, it was going to be something actually serious health wise.

This week is going well
Fuck you scrappy
Doctor, would you say it is time for people to start cracking open eachother's skulls and begin feasting on the goo inside?
This news is bearing down on us like a shotgun full of snow.
IT'S A CLASS FIVE KILLSTORM
This reporter places the blame squarely on you; the viewers!
We actually are killing him
Cue new slew of Ichiro hurts this team one-liners.
oh joy
Raul would have played through the bleeding ulcer.
Raul also played through all the bleeding uclers WE got watching him field. True grit.
More like this team hurts Ichiro.

Or Geoff Baker hurts Ichiro.

We need to make Ichiro feel better QUICK!

What non-baseball things make Ichiro happiest? Whatever they are, we need to find out quick and get them to him as quickly as possible. Our Japanese-speaking LLers need to scour his japanese media interviews for insights into what warms his soul. The amazing translated interview Baker posted this morning is a good place to start. Whether puppies, Kabuki, Mexican food, ponies, or the Red Green Show, Ichiro deserves it.

I also humbly recommend a card from Erik Bedard.

Sean Green could also visit him this Tuesday
This is great:

Ichiro: At the end, [Kawasaki Muneo] sent me an e-mail. “I like you even more now than I did before,” something to that effect. “The reason why is because you were so great when you weren’t hitting,” he wrote. “And your last hit, I will never forget as long as I live.” It brought tears to my eyes. I half cried. Really, I wanted to send Muneo two years’ worth of Yunkel [laughs]. [Yunkel is a health drink Ichiro endorses].

Hmmm, possible culprit?
Perhaps . . .

I knew a guy in high school who had an ulcer from drinking too much Pepsi — like several 2-liters a day.

I think I trust Ichiro not to drink battery acid on a regular basis, considering how well he treats his body, but maybe it’s the source of all his powers.

ICHIRO HURTS THIS TEAM BY DRINKING THINGS
Oh, and make sure to translate!

Or else you’ll probably give Graham an ulcer – he’s probably already on the edge from the explosion of Japanese comments (now deleted) on that WBC thread.

I blame Papua New Guinea beer...
As long

as he’s playing on his own bobblehead night, I don’t think the entire season will be a wash.

I love Geoff Baker's last two headlines:

“An inner look at Ichiro”
“Ichiro had bleeding ulcer”

Ichiros stomach brokeded USSM.
Still up for now
Clearly...

….the blame here goes to Geoff Baker and all of his probing questions to Ichiro about clubhouse chemistry. Stressed Ichiro straight into an ulcer.

A week is ok

get better, little guy.

I was kind of expecting this after hearing he was still having fatigue after resting for a few days

Damn.

He really is the Natural
Yet somehow, I
More excited about baseball than anytime since I was little (the M's glory days)

I feel like I’ve been rescued from Hell; Purgatory seems a delight by comparison.

Great now I need to get tickets for the game on the 15th.
The important question is who do I pick up to

[DELETED NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR FANTASY TEAM]

Objectively

This is pretty hilarious that it happened to us of all people.

It's hard to complain that we're being unfairly damaged when the Angels and A's have also been smoked.

I agree, however, that it’s pretty funny.

Something to think about.

In the first day or two missing from action, Ichiro wanted to play. Wak told him to go home and rest.

Yikes.

Yeah, but did he want to dive for balls?

That’s all that matters.

Ok, show of hands...

Who honestly thought that Ichiro would be on the DL before Griffey?

It'll be a big deal when the M's start the season 0-8.

>:(

Trying to think positive...

Traditionally, April is his worst month at the plate. That’s a nice way of saying he normally pretty much sucks in April anyway, so a few days of less sucktitude is probably better than later in the season when he normally is a better producer…

(On another note, this is the first time I noticed BB-Ref’s redesign. Upon first glance it seems better, but I’ll delve into that later)

That's at least a nice way to look at it.
from Divish

" UPDATE: I just got off the phone with Zduriencik and he said that Ichiro was not happy with the decision to be placed on the disabled list. He wanted to try and play through the discomfort and fatigue.

“At the end of the day, we took the decision out of his hands,” Zduriencik said.

Even after the diagnosis, Ichiro wanted to get some work in to stay shapr.

“He wanted to work out today,” Zduriencik said. “We had to tell him no.”

The remedy for this is heavy rest and lack of activity isn’t something Ichiro is used to or will accept, but Zduriencik said the Mariners will be vigilant in making sure that he does not try to rush himself back.

“We want him to rest because that’s the remedy for this,” Zduriencik said.

Zduriencik said the decision to place him on the DL was prudent, considering the time of the year.

“This was a decision based on what’s best for 162 games, not the early window of games he would miss,” he said. “Had we allowed him to play, or this thing got worse later in the season, you’re looking at the possibility of him missing 14 or 15 games.”"

Ichiro hurts the team by not listening to his doctors.
and FWIW, Drayer says Zduriencik says he has been cleared to work out in Peoria
and an update fron Stone

here

My bet is on Chris Burke getting added.
Ichiro hurts this team by being diagnosed too late to prevent the loss of Rule 5 acquisition Reegie Corona.
Might be tough to keep the 200 hit streak alive.
He'll only have 154 games max to do it.
He'll just hit more bunt singles to make up for it.

He’ll be fine.

Slightly better offense this year should net him more PAs/G than last year though so that'll help.
Good point. Roll the lineup over.

He’s gonna hit .360 anyway just to be more awesome.

Plus better clubhouse chemistry, ya know!

(actually, I’m only partly joking)

So, at least we'll be able to draft Strasburg next year when the Nationals don't sign him this year.
I'd rather just get him this year when the Nationals pass on him
And making the day even better ...

Furness, Nelson & Puckett have the season preview! Nellie is baffled that the Japan team felt pressure to win the WBC!

and Sandmeyer

who is pissed that the organization didn’t manage Morrow’s blood sugar to be a starter. Huh?

Ichiro hurts this team by not managing Morrow's blood sugar to be a starter.
Sadly, that's about it.

Apparently, you can just fix your blood sugar levels.

But Ichiro fucked over Morrow

by having two ice creams. When Morrow followed suit, glucose hell broke loose.

You know what would cure Morrow's diabetes?

Stephen Strasburg.

Too much sugar!!!!!
This makes me sad >:(

I want people to start fluffing Grant Green or someone to lessen the blow.

Everyone else is not really good enough to merit a high first round pick

Yay

Sorry, who are Furness, Nelson, and Puckett?
KJR radiojocks
Wakamatsu chimes in

Per Ryan Divish:

“This is a guy that’s never been on the disabled list and something he takes great pride in,” he said. “But we had to convince him that this was the best thing for him and the best thing for this team. He did not want to not be with the team when the season opened.”

Ichiro being stubborn still lobbied to play, and Wakamatsu admitted Ichiro won’t be able to rest like a normal person would rest.

“It’s a challenge, we’re trying to get him to understand the severity of this and how important these first few days are when it comes to his recovery,” he said. “This is a serious thing, and if we had misdiagnosed it or he pushes it too soon, it could be really serious.”

When I mentioned if people realized the true strain that he was under in the WBC with the crushing expectations and overwhelming media scrutiny, Wakamatsu went even further.

“To me, it’s just the fact that he cares that much,” he said. “I don’t know if people give him enough credit for how much just he much cares about playing the game, his teammates and the teams he plays on.”
Somebody needs to pump Ichiro full of sedatives for a week.
Or weed
Weed is a stimulant.
Only way to ensure he doesn't do anything productive
Until I became a problem pot smoker

I had all sorts of crazy, weed-fueled adventures.

Where's coach when you need him?
So he'll walk to the grocery store and buy eleven bags of jalapeno Cheetos

He won’t be stressing out about it.

I hope he at least tells someone before he walks off.
Yeah.

Jalapeno Cheetos have to do wonders for stomach ulcers…

If I were an acquaintance of Ichiro I would be giving him a wide berth right now

Ichiro being denied ability to play when he wants to + stomach ulcer = Sweet liquid death for any who cross him

God. How racist. Not all Asians are ninjas.
Did I say he was a ninja?

It might just be a really cool fashion choice.

The idea of a ninja with an ulcer amuses me
You never see pirates getting ulcers
No

But they have to fight Scurvy. Vitamin C deficiency is a bitch.

No joke...

Clearly Ichiro would be a samurai.

Trying again

Notable people that died from bleeding ulcers:

JRR Tolkien
James Joyce
Rudolph Valentino

Hush, you.
Oh, he will be fine, he is Ichiro.
Tycho Brahe died of a burst bladder.

I don’t know what that has to do with your comment, but I just find it hilarious.

Deserved it too.

He knows what he did.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Are we seriously looking at a Endy-Guti-Griffey/Wlad OF?! Could put Saunders in RF instead…

Saunders is injured
I really thought the baseball gods would of thought of this one before now.
I'm surprised no one has blamed Baker yet
I'm starting to get an ulcer just thinking about this.
