PEORIA, Ariz. -- Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Jack Zduriencik announced today that All-Star outfielder Ichiro Suzuki will be placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 31, and will miss the first week of the regular season.
Ichiro had been suffering severe fatigue, causing him to miss the Mariners last three Cactus League games (March 30-April 1). He was examined by doctors in Arizona who determined that he had suffered a bleeding ulcer. The ulcer is not bleeding now, but in the interim, doctors have ordered restricted activity.
"It was a very difficult decision to place Ichiro on the disabled list," Zduriencik said, "especially since we know what a fierce competitor he is, and how important it is to him to help the team. However, we determined it was in both his best interest, and the best interest of the club, to place him on the DL at this time."
Ichiro will be eligible to return to Major League games on Wednesday, April 15.
Shit.
More from Stone
From what I can gather with a couple of quick calls, the Mariners are very hopeful Ichiro will be ready to play on April 15, when he's eligible to come off the disabled list. If that's the case, this is not a huge blow. He would miss just eight games, and be back for the second game of the team's first homestand at Safeco, facing the Angels.
That's some relief at least.

This is, to me, like finding out a relative is in the hospital or something. I honestly got a stomach ache just now. Thank goodness it’s not serious.

Possibly.

People used to die from bleeding ulcers.
I think the treatment has come a ways since then.

From experience they can be fixed rather quickly.

Another little shitty part of the timing:
So he’s missing the home opener too.

That's not cool.
Not cool at all

Which pretty much guarantees Griffey in the OF.
Aaron Campeau - April 3, 2009
Griffey was going to be in the OF for the home opener regardless
Jeff Sullivan - April 3, 2009
I had convinced myself otherwise.

I couldn't imagine a scenario where he wouldn't be unless his leg fell off
and even then they’d find a way.

Losing a leg isn't such a big deal
Matthew - April 3, 2009
Hell...
Griffey has played the OF like he has had one leg for the past 5 years. If anybody can do it without a leg, it’s him.

On the plus side if it turns out it was caused by stress than we can put to rest the claim that Ichiro doesn't care

Any hints of this during the WBC?
His play seemed strangely un-Ichiro (especially that dropped fly ball in foul territory) until he went crazy in the championship game.

ralphie81 - April 3, 2009
We need to make Ichiro feel better QUICK!
What non-baseball things make Ichiro happiest? Whatever they are, we need to find out quick and get them to him as quickly as possible. Our Japanese-speaking LLers need to scour his japanese media interviews for insights into what warms his soul. The amazing translated interview Baker posted this morning is a good place to start. Whether puppies, Kabuki, Mexican food, ponies, or the Red Green Show, Ichiro deserves it.
I also humbly recommend a card from Erik Bedard.
Decatur - April 3, 2009
Sean Green could also visit him this Tuesday
Graham MacAree - April 3, 2009
YES
Decatur - April 3, 2009
This is great:
Ichiro: At the end, [Kawasaki Muneo] sent me an e-mail. “I like you even more now than I did before,” something to that effect. “The reason why is because you were so great when you weren’t hitting,” he wrote. “And your last hit, I will never forget as long as I live.” It brought tears to my eyes. I half cried. Really, I wanted to send Muneo two years’ worth of Yunkel [laughs]. [Yunkel is a health drink Ichiro endorses].
Teej - April 3, 2009
Hmmm, possible culprit?
waldo rojas - April 3, 2009
Perhaps . . .
I knew a guy in high school who had an ulcer from drinking too much Pepsi — like several 2-liters a day.
I think I trust Ichiro not to drink battery acid on a regular basis, considering how well he treats his body, but maybe it’s the source of all his powers.

Trying to think positive...
Traditionally, April is his worst month at the plate. That’s a nice way of saying he normally pretty much sucks in April anyway, so a few days of less sucktitude is probably better than later in the season when he normally is a better producer…
(On another note, this is the first time I noticed BB-Ref’s redesign. Upon first glance it seems better, but I’ll delve into that later)
PositivePaul - April 3, 2009
That's at least a nice way to look at it.

from Divish
" UPDATE: I just got off the phone with Zduriencik and he said that Ichiro was not happy with the decision to be placed on the disabled list. He wanted to try and play through the discomfort and fatigue.
“At the end of the day, we took the decision out of his hands,” Zduriencik said.
Even after the diagnosis, Ichiro wanted to get some work in to stay shapr.
“He wanted to work out today,” Zduriencik said. “We had to tell him no.”
The remedy for this is heavy rest and lack of activity isn’t something Ichiro is used to or will accept, but Zduriencik said the Mariners will be vigilant in making sure that he does not try to rush himself back.
“We want him to rest because that’s the remedy for this,” Zduriencik said.
Zduriencik said the decision to place him on the DL was prudent, considering the time of the year.
“This was a decision based on what’s best for 162 games, not the early window of games he would miss,” he said. “Had we allowed him to play, or this thing got worse later in the season, you’re looking at the possibility of him missing 14 or 15 games.”"
