According to California state law, buying a personal firearm comes with a ten-day waiting period.
The Mariners have abandoned, for now, any plans to have former No. 1 draft pick Phillippe Aumont continue in a starting role.
..."We felt that this was a guy, who, if used in a relief role, could be on a real fast-track to the major leagues,'' he said. "And we're talking a real fast track.''
In the end, Zduriencik said, it came down to whether the team was willing to wait several more years for Aumont to develop as a potential front-end starter for the rotation -- never a guarantee -- or go the more likely route of becoming a top bullpen arm in a much shorter timeframe. (Baker)
Phillippe Aumont is 20 years old and just used his A-level heat and sharp breaking ball to sit down some excellent hitters in the WBC. Now, out of nowhere, it appears he's being moved from the rotation into the bullpen. After appearing in all of 15 minor league games.
This may not be permanent. Dave mentions that the front office has been talking about moving Aumont to the bullpen temporarily in an effort to manage his workload. But the way Zduriencik comes off in Baker's piece...I didn't hold the Morrow thing against the organization, because that was simply a matter of his body not being built for such a demanding role, but if this is true, and if this is permanent, then it's an unforgivably, unbelievably, irresponsibly short-sighted decision.
Phillippe Aumont is 20 years old. TWENTY YEARS OLD. There is absolutely no reason to do this.

OlSalty - April 5, 2009
I don't understand this at all
The whole offseason it seemed like Zdurenciek understood that a bullpen could be put together of low cost/high reward types with live arms. He seemed to get that spending a lot of money and/or draft picks on the bullpen was not a smart move. If this turns out to be true we will have 3 first round draft picks used exclusively for relief purposes in Morrow, Fields and now Aumont.
I hope something change with this otherwise I am going to be really upset. Our rotation is Olsen twin thin and it’d be nice to have an electric arm like Aumont’s waiting to join Felix in a few years. I know that Aumont becoming the SP we all hope he will become isn’t a sure thing but it doesn’t seem worth shirking that risk by lowering his potential value in making him a reliever.

I really want to give the guy the benefit of the doubt, but his comments in that article are mind-boggling.
I was really geared up to have a GM that got it, that understood what it meant to actually build a team, that understood that you can build a bullpen for cheap and that you can win without a team of superstars. This move is completely anti-that-train-of-thought.

Your vomit, on the other hand, might get awarded a 4 year $48mil FA contract to be a starter. So probably you should try the FA route, rather than entering the draft. More money, less loss of valuable materials.

OlSalty - April 5, 2009
Right there with you Matthew.
royalcurve - April 5, 2009
I wonder if Z and his scouts just don't see it happening.
This move pisses me off and I want to break things, but a part of me wants to say “Hey, he’s a professional scout with a hell of a track record. Maybe he doesn’t see a starting pitcher in Aumont.”
And I doubt he made this decision without his scouts’ input. This just doesn’t add up. We’re missing something.
Because fuck this makes no sense.
Teej - April 5, 2009
On a team with no starting pitching depth close to the majors, gutting anyone with a chance at helping there makes no sense.
You can always turn him into a reliever later if the starting thing really isn’t working out.
abender20 - April 5, 2009
On the one hand I trust his judgment, but on the other Aumont is 20 years old with basically zero experience

Faux - April 5, 2009
Hold the phone.
Isn’t is possible that Z just wants Aumont to face big league pitching sooner, in relief, rather than later? Maybe he isn’t off his nut. Maybe he just wants to know what he has now rather than in 2010 or 11? (He’s got to get rid of Washburn and possibly Bedard in the next several months). He’s got to know what he has to replace that with. Aumont is a big guy with no stamina or diabetes issues. He could pitch in relief or start. He should start, but let’s see if he can, let’s see what he needs to work on over the winter. HE WILL BE A STARTING PITCHER. Z is not designating him to the bullpen, just letting him get some experience there. Didn’t hyphen start (sic) there? This is not the end of the world (Bavasi showed us what that looks like). Let’s give him a chance. Most of the other decisions he’s made have been quite good. We’re 0-0 tomorrow. Let’s give him a little more time.
Not Loving Batista - April 5, 2009
Wishful thinking. He is wasting valuable development time, even if you go by the idea
that they will turn him back into a starter in a few yrs
Rudy4three - April 5, 2009
But, he can't be this STUPID.
Surely, he knows he doesn’t need three closers in the pen. He’s got to think that Aumont is in his starting rotation once he’s seen what he needs to be there.
Not Loving Batista - April 5, 2009
I've learned to never assume anything about Mariners GMs.
abender20 - April 5, 2009
Being good enough to get three or six guys out is completely different from starting.
You can’t look at how good a reliever is in MLB, then just plug those stats in as a starter. You need more pitches. You have to have something to get lefties out. You lose a few MPH on your fastball, so you have to have other pitches to complement it. You have to have durability
- which you’re not going to have if you’ve been pitching in oneor two-inning increments for three years. You have to know how to pace yourself. Etc. Etc. These are all things that don’t develop if you’re a full-time reliever. It’s not like once he gets called up to the MLB bullpen, he’s passed the finish line and is now ready to be at the top of the rotation.
Teej - April 5, 2009
The SBN hyphen bug finally gets me.
I thought I had it figured out and it would never harm me. Oh how today blows.
Teej - April 5, 2009
Ah!
So I should probably NOT skip the strikeout lines when I’m reading here?
d0nkey - April 6, 2009
Guys who come up through the minors as relievers don't just turn into starters once they're here.
Teej - April 5, 2009
And if they do, they're No. 5 guys like RRS.
Teej - April 5, 2009
But the conversion in the other direction is easy! That's why you should always make your starters into relievers as early as possible.
abender20 - April 5, 2009
I'll give you the conversion, but he doesn't have time.
Washburn (hopefully) and Bedard are gone. He desparately needs a starter sooner rather than later. He needs to know what he’s got. Aumont is young and strong. He can adjust. He’s not Morrow or as fragile as Bedard.
Not Loving Batista - April 5, 2009
See Corco's comment below.
abender20 - April 5, 2009
How do we know he's not fragile?
He’s thrown like 8 innings in his whole life. Dude didn’t even have a high school team to play on. We know nothing about him, other than he has the potential to be an incredible starter, but it’s going to take some time. He should be given that time to see how he develops. If we tell him, “hey, throw only the sinking fastball from now on, and you’ll pitch one inning every day,” how is he ever going to learn the things he needs to learn to be a starter in the majors?
Teej - April 5, 2009
A successful major league starting pitcher needs an entirely different repretoire then a successful major league reliever
A reliever can get by just fine with one or two pitches. A starter needs 3+ to be successful.
It’s awfully hard to develop your secondary pitches at the major league level.
It worked with RRS because he already had 3 pitches. Morrow kind of did. Aumont does not.
Corco - April 5, 2009
There has to be some value in learning to face people more than once in a game as well, pitch economically, etc.
abender20 - April 5, 2009
All that too
Corco - April 5, 2009
You don't need three pitches if you have the type of power sinker that he does..
If he got to the point where he could command that thing, he could throw is 80 percent of the time and probably be very effective.
He also has a pretty filthy slider. If he spent the time in the minors getting his arm stretched out and working on command of only those two pitches, he’d be pretty damn good in the rotation.
Rudy4three - April 5, 2009
Even the man who does this
also has a change, a slider, and a curveball. The man with the best sinker in the bigs throws something like 70-75% of the time. (I’m having trouble finding pitchFX data to confirm).
abender20 - April 5, 2009
80 percent, 75 percent... whatever.. my point was that he's a mediocre changeup away from
already having a devastating repetoire for a starting pitcher.
Rudy4three - April 5, 2009
Webb's curveball and change have developed into above average pitches as well.
Goose - April 5, 2009
They aren't like Tim Wakefield's secondary pitches.
abender20 - April 5, 2009
Webb is a beast. My whole point is that he already has two above average pitches
that obviously need to be perfected and commanded through repetition and development.
They toss an average changeup in there and he’s a top of the rotation guy. Is he Webb? No, but Webb is an elite guy.
Rudy4three - April 5, 2009
That would be awesome if you were Z or some FO guy defending the decision.
I know its very hard to prove, since this is the internet, but I am just saying.
Fin - April 5, 2009
I am not Z or from the FO, but Z hasn't really f'd up yet, except for maybe Tui
and that’s only a two week mistake. Give him the benefit of the doubt on this one. Aumont can get another pitch. Aumont can see what he needs to develop in the bigs. Morrow was never going to be a starting pitcher. He doesn’t and never will never be able to sustain for 6 innings. Aumont is young and strong and I fully believe he can develop into a solid #2 starter. If he is forced to do that by 2010 that is a big positive for the M’s. I wish he didn’t have to be rushed, but that is sometimes the nature of things.
Not Loving Batista - April 5, 2009
Morrow almost threw a no hitter in his first ML start. I fail to see how he "can't sustain himself for six innings"
His move was BS too. Same deal as Aumont. Jack didn’t want to wait and gamble with Morrow when the bullpen was a disaster.
It’s all coming together now.
Rudy4three - April 5, 2009
The bullpen is a disaster because nobody in the bullpen can throw strikes..
Oh wait, more and more of them can throw strikes as more and more get added to the bullpen. Throwing strikes is important both in the starting rotation and in the bullpen. Z has to know how his prospects can both throw strikes and avoid bats. This is a rebuilding year.
Not Loving Batista - April 5, 2009
The bullpen is the only part of the roster that can be built from spare parts and bubblegum
Graham MacAree - April 5, 2009
Exactly. You don't need 3 closers in the bullpen.
One is enough. I think you’ve got that in Morrow. Aumont is going to be a STARTING PITCHER. And you can trade that other guy.
Not Loving Batista - April 5, 2009
And this slows his development as a starting pitcher.
Graham MacAree - April 5, 2009
I give up. I'm trying so hard to believe that Z is really going to change things.
There has to be a good reason for him to do this. I cannot live with another x# of years of mismanagement. Tomorrow morning we’re tied for first in AL West., and that hasn’t been the case for a while.
Not Loving Batista - April 5, 2009
Not, in fact, since last year.
abender20 - April 5, 2009
In a rebuilding year...
there’s no reason to have a shutdown closer. It’s worth losing a couple more games if it means you have Morrow in the rotation for the next four years.
PissedMick - April 6, 2009
If Phillipe Aumont is a No. 2 starter in 2010, I will give you everything I own and be your own personal slave for eternity.
Teej - April 5, 2009
It'd be absolutely worth it, too.
abender20 - April 5, 2009
Agreed, if I was in to that sort of thing.
Not Loving Batista - April 5, 2009
If they made a magic "develop third and fourth pitch" mushroom that could be snacked upon in the bullpen,
then I’d be living in a world so awesome that even being a man slave could not ruin my demeanor.
Teej - April 5, 2009
Maybe they should move him to the big league bullpen as the mop up guy and make him throw nothing but changeups
Graham MacAree - April 5, 2009
Also, force him to warm up with about 150 pitches.
abender20 - April 5, 2009
