I was going to comment on the Gameday report of Wash's average fastball velocity
I think it is reporting the average velocity of his average fastball. At release he’s around 88, but at the plate, it’s down to low 80s, so they could be reporting the average velocity of the ball during its flight to the plate.
Percoset is an opiate; Ibuprofen is a COX2 inhibitor. They are in totally different pathways and don’t affect one another. Opiates and COX2 inhibitors are often combined in one pill
Valium belongs to a group of drugs called benzodiazepines which act at the same receptors in your brain as alcohol.
Do not take them with alcohol unless you really want to get fucked up. If you do too much of either, you run the chance of not waking up.
Percocet is a combination of Tylenol and Oxycodone, an opiate. You can safely take Percocet with ibuprofen(up to 400 mg).
I don't want to jinx anything but it's 6 innings gone and the Cardinals need to score some fucking runs so Chris Carpenter isn't on the losing end of a no hitter
I think that the added offense and flexibility (not to mention the fact that Swisher is a pretty good defender) is worth putting Jakubauskas in the rotation.
I'm not convinced that the market values defense enough for that to be reasonable.
I’m all for trading Beltre (ow) if he isn’t open to signing an extension and if the M’s aren’t in contention, but unless he flips out on offense I just don’t see him bringing back a ton in return in a trade.
Just because those teams value defense doesn't mean they'll give up more for him.
They’re all good at knowing what the market will bear. Unless you get two of them competing against each other (and I think the Rays are good at 3B for now) they’re still in the driver’s seat.
However, if they properly value Beltre and want him on their team, GMZ is still the decider of the price. Even if the general market asks for less, they know what his actual value should be and should therefore be willing to pay more if they want his services.
Oh man those guys got some farm kids, maybe swing by New York for some cash.
Why am I fixated on NY here? I love the hot corner and good 3rd basemen, and hate NY. I think I’m just whistling past the graveyard by talking about Beltre to NY.
That was the best team defensive performance I have ever seen from the M's.
Granted, I have only been watching a few years, but holy shit if you ever encounter a non believer in the importance of defence mail them a copy of this game.
Yeah, there were several flyballs out in centerfield that would have been basehits in years past.
Gutz is amazing. Endy is amazing. Every line drive hit out there, I feel like they are going to be caught. Washburn just benefited from the improved defense. We would have lost that game if it wasn’t for the defense.
The plays I saw Gutz make were not spectacular or dramatic enough to make any highlight reel.
But they were spectacular and dramatic because he took away like four base hits with his range. He actually overran a line drive in the gap; that is how good he is.
Just saw the highlight. I had the entire game on while in my classes, but I obviously didn’t see every out. What an amazing catch. And he still took another 3-4 hits away during the rest of the game.
Damn you for closing comments.

Jeff Sullivan - April 9, 2009
It depends how they take the average
Since the ball is accelerating, the average velocity is not the simple average of the beginning and end velocity.
ubelmann - April 9, 2009
Why would they report it like that anyway?
Seems to me the feature’s just broken.
Jeff Sullivan - April 9, 2009

You know what would be nice right now?
A leftie in the bullpen
Graham MacAree - April 9, 2009
bleh
JI - April 9, 2009
The word is spelled "lefty"
seattlebruin - April 9, 2009
You know what word isn't spelled 'lefty'?
Twatbadger.
As in: seattlebruin is a twatbadger
Graham MacAree - April 9, 2009
But a correct twatbadger.
BrettJMiller - April 9, 2009
Proper twatbadger?
Scruffy Lefty - April 9, 2009
As much as I loved the Kingdome, turf fields still piss me off.
BrettJMiller - April 9, 2009
If they don't yank Washburn here, it's over.

seattlebruin - April 9, 2009

Denard Span is really annoying.
I like him as a player, but if anyone is gonna fuck us over, it’ll be Span, huh?
BrettJMiller - April 9, 2009
Yup, I have the same feeling.
MFAN - April 9, 2009

Kirsten Schlewitz - April 9, 2009

Aaron Campeau - April 9, 2009

Kirsten Schlewitz - April 9, 2009
Someone needs to tell Wak about the gas gauge behind Washburns left ear.
It’s below E right now.
appleshampoo - April 9, 2009
Is Wash somehow going to work himself out of this?

JI - April 9, 2009
Whew
ewakio - April 9, 2009
Is it wrong to miss JJ right now?
Bearskin Rugburn - April 9, 2009
Well, if we had JJ and no Gutierrez it'd be like 4-1 Twins
Graham MacAree - April 9, 2009
Yes, The cockpunch has be released on Morrow now.
All will be ok.
Scruffy Lefty - April 9, 2009
WOOOOO
phil333 - April 9, 2009

deacvision7 - April 9, 2009
I'm in shock
Kirsten Schlewitz - April 9, 2009
Well fuck me silly
They didn’t score. The Twins suck.
Gihyou - April 9, 2009
Weee!
Now Morrow can walk six consecutive!
BrianL - April 9, 2009
Why would he need to do that?
the Twins only need two runs
seattlebruin - April 9, 2009
8 shutout innings
From Washburn? Pinch me
d rod - April 9, 2009
I forgot this was a day game.
Holy crap. No Washburn runs.
SethGrandpa - April 9, 2009
GET READY FOR MORROW TP STAR IN THE BLOCKBUSTER ADVENTURE CALLED "REDEMPTION"
EnglishMariner - April 9, 2009

1-2-3 RUNS!
JI - April 9, 2009
So, I might be jumping out on a limb here, but Carl Pavano sucks.
Matthew - April 9, 2009
Good thing nobody in the Mariners blogosphere worth a damn thought we should sign him after 2004
It would be embarrassing for anyone to have such a stupid idea on record
Graham MacAree - April 9, 2009
www,statcorner.com is a excellent way to make uninformed declarations informed :)
Robert - April 9, 2009
Ayala!
Slurvey - April 9, 2009
Wash's trade value may never be higher
Get on the Phone, Z
Gihyou - April 9, 2009
I hope Morrow comes in from the bullpen to that really gay intro from Miss Murder
Robert - April 9, 2009
So that's what happened to Luis Ayala.
Omerta - April 9, 2009
I don't want to jinx anything but it's 6 innings gone and the Cardinals need to score some fucking runs so Chris Carpenter isn't on the losing end of a no hitter
JI - April 9, 2009
Those are the most amusing sorts of no-hitters
Graham MacAree - April 9, 2009
Luckily it would count since the Cardinals are the home team
JI - April 9, 2009
The hilarious thing is it would be all Pujols' fault
JI - April 9, 2009
Didn't the Angels have one of these against the Dodgers last year?
bluemax - April 9, 2009
Was it official?
JI - April 9, 2009
I think so
hold on.
bluemax - April 9, 2009
No, not official.
esoteric - April 9, 2009
I believe it wasn't because it was only 8.5 innings.
esoteric - April 9, 2009
Ah whoops.
bluemax - April 9, 2009
Yes. Jered Weaver and a couple others pitched a no hitter that we lost.
It was VERY irritating.
TheOptimist - April 9, 2009
I told you all not to sleep on the Pirates this year.
Matthew - April 9, 2009
Holy fuck Chris Carpenter!
He might lose it because Pujols fucked up though.
Slurvey - April 9, 2009
I'm glad we didn't draft him now
Indigo_Satellite - April 9, 2009
This would be even more hilarious than when the Angels threw a combined no-hitter but lost.
esoteric - April 9, 2009
WASHBURN! PERKINS!
Its a Pitchers Duel
Paseman - April 9, 2009
For some reason I don't trust Brandon Morrow
Corco - April 9, 2009
I like how we cannot PH Jr for Wlad
because then Jr would have to play RF seeing as we don’t have enough OFs to then defensive sub.
Matthew - April 9, 2009
We could move Cedeno and lose the DH for Beltre or just bring in Tui
Graham MacAree - April 9, 2009
damn
Bearskin Rugburn - April 9, 2009
Thought of those.
I’d actually rather lose the DH than put Tui at 3B
Matthew - April 9, 2009
In a 1-0 game going to the ninth?
absolutely
JI - April 9, 2009
Things a manager will never do.
Matthew - April 9, 2009
Lou used to do it with Griffey
JI - April 9, 2009
Me too
Graham MacAree - April 9, 2009
Cedeno to OF Beltre to 3B
Bearskin Rugburn - April 9, 2009
So you're saying there's a drawback to having 12 pitchers on the roster
I see
Frosty Raptor - April 9, 2009
Or having a Tui on the roster instead of an outfielder
Corco - April 9, 2009
Who is better in the outfield right now Branyan or Griffey
Corco - April 9, 2009
Russel the pimp
JI - April 9, 2009
On the other hand who the hell needs to PH for Wlad? :)
Graham MacAree - April 9, 2009
zzzz\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

3. Franklin Gutierrez
Frosty Raptor - April 9, 2009
Bear Grylls is a fraud.
BrianL - April 9, 2009
Yeah
Survivorman is where it’s at.
section331 - April 9, 2009
Survivorman never served in the SAS
Plus he’s Canadian. Bear Grylls > Survivorman
Frosty Raptor - April 9, 2009
Hey somebody is doing that wrong thing again.
Robert - April 9, 2009
Being Canadian is no reason to hold a grudge.
Matthew - April 9, 2009
Survivorman doesn't need his own personal camera crew.
BrianL - April 9, 2009
The ultimate measure of survivability should be this
Who do you think will last longer in a fight with a Kodiak bear?
Frosty Raptor - April 9, 2009
Survivorman is smart enough to avoid the bear in the first place.
BrianL - April 9, 2009
You take that back!
He’s not a fraud, he’s a survival expert who adds “dramatic elements” to the situations he finds himself in.
Frosty Raptor - April 9, 2009
I'm Bear Grylls and I'm gonna eat this disgusting looking thing.

EnglishMariner - April 9, 2009
He still comes up with some great ones.
esoteric - April 9, 2009
well, that name goes back to Bob Ferguson
the original “death to flying things”; Dave used it that I can recall first here for Ichiro, in his rookie year.
msb - April 9, 2009
Right. Dave seems to use it every once in a while.
I think Jon Miller’s used it too.
Ferguson’s teammate Jack Chapman may have been the orig. ‘death to flying things’ – and at least Chapman was an OF.
marc w - April 9, 2009
How did Castilla get that throw off?
Goose - April 9, 2009

Goose - April 9, 2009
He's had a few nifty line drives
Graham MacAree - April 9, 2009
Huh, seemed like to be a majority of them were grounders that found holes.
Goose - April 9, 2009
Pinch hit Griffey?
EnglishMariner - April 9, 2009
That works too.
Limerickx - April 9, 2009

He's Maddux compared to Ankiel

Also, fuck you you bitch

Aaron Campeau - April 9, 2009
JARROD WASHBURN FOR NICK SWISHER
IT’S FAIR I SWEAR
cwel87 - April 9, 2009
Sadly, we need Washburn more than Swisher at this point.
Wilder. - April 9, 2009
I'm not entirelyconvinced that this is true.
I think that the added offense and flexibility (not to mention the fact that Swisher is a pretty good defender) is worth putting Jakubauskas in the rotation.
Aaron Campeau - April 9, 2009
But it's moot because it's not like the Yankees would make that trade anyway.
Aaron Campeau - April 9, 2009
How about if they A-Rod's recovery sucks and they need a 3rd baseman?
Kermit. - April 9, 2009
Washburn plays third?
abender20 - April 9, 2009
Swisher is worse than Beltre by a damned sight and has little upside.
Aaron Campeau - April 9, 2009
And if we're trading Beltre it's likely because we're bad and I'd rather give the PT to Wlad or whatever other random OFer looks interesting.
Aaron Campeau - April 9, 2009
How about taking home a sackful of prospects for the future?
I’m not going to bring up packaging Wash as a salary dump, that ship sailed last year.
Kermit. - April 9, 2009
That would be more interesting certainly
abender20 - April 9, 2009
Crap, just checked Fangraphs to remind myself that the Yankmees cupboard is a bit bare.
4 team trade Z!
Kermit. - April 9, 2009
I'm not convinced that the market values defense enough for that to be reasonable.
I’m all for trading Beltre (ow) if he isn’t open to signing an extension and if the M’s aren’t in contention, but unless he flips out on offense I just don’t see him bringing back a ton in return in a trade.
Aaron Campeau - April 9, 2009
Unless you could trade him to Cleveland, Boston, or Tampa.
abender20 - April 9, 2009
Just because those teams value defense doesn't mean they'll give up more for him.
They’re all good at knowing what the market will bear. Unless you get two of them competing against each other (and I think the Rays are good at 3B for now) they’re still in the driver’s seat.
Aaron Campeau - April 9, 2009
That's a good point.
However, if they properly value Beltre and want him on their team, GMZ is still the decider of the price. Even if the general market asks for less, they know what his actual value should be and should therefore be willing to pay more if they want his services.
abender20 - April 9, 2009
Oh man those guys got some farm kids, maybe swing by New York for some cash.
Why am I fixated on NY here? I love the hot corner and good 3rd basemen, and hate NY. I think I’m just whistling past the graveyard by talking about Beltre to NY.
Kermit. - April 9, 2009
Washburn isn't good Swisher is
it’s an easy choice
JI - April 9, 2009
I just think our rotation depth is much more important than adding another OF or 1B.
Wilder. - April 9, 2009
That's amazingly short sighted
JI - April 9, 2009
Is it?
Who do we have ready to take Washburn’s place? We have a dozen guys who can play the OF and 1B.
This may change in 3 months, but right now Washburn is more valuable to the team than Swisher would be. But this trade isn’t going to happen anyway.
Wilder. - April 9, 2009
We could have Swisher for years and Washburn sucks
It would makes better now and in the future

All things considered, a split really isn't horrible to start off the year
We’re minus Ichiro and Chavez led off every single game.

EnglishMariner - April 9, 2009
Gutz fan page for fb whores:
Facebook.
EnglishMariner - April 9, 2009
Yeah, there were several flyballs out in centerfield that would have been basehits in years past.
Gutz is amazing. Endy is amazing. Every line drive hit out there, I feel like they are going to be caught. Washburn just benefited from the improved defense. We would have lost that game if it wasn’t for the defense.
Wilder. - April 9, 2009
I move that we start calling Franklin Gutierrez 'death from below'

lemonverbena - April 9, 2009
So these games are going fast.
I think every game in the series lasted less than 3 hours. I like it.
Wilder. - April 9, 2009
Oh, I'm late on this.
Been at school all day. Had the game going on my laptop, but no sound and no game thread.
Wilder. - April 9, 2009
Well, I seem to have missed all the excitement.
Washburn the groundball pitcher? Morrow pulls it together again?
msb - April 9, 2009
Why the hell can't you leave blogs? I added HH to add a note of condolence, and now I can't make it go away.
Apparently once you’ve commented, you are forever bound to have to have membership.
abender20 - April 9, 2009
Yup.
It’s annoying because I can’t make HH or LGT leave my ribbon even though I’d rather have Royals Review on there.
Aaron Campeau - April 9, 2009
I was perfectly happy with just LL, FG, and BTB on there. Argh.
abender20 - April 9, 2009
This is yet another thing they need to fix in SBN 3.0.
Aaron Campeau - April 9, 2009
They should allow disactivating and reactivating subscriptions.
That way you don’t have to sign up again, but you don’t have to see them in the ribbon unless you want to.
ralphie81 - April 9, 2009
So Gootch had a good game in CF eh?
Half the thread is “Gutz!”, the other half split evenly between insulin jokes/no fatty jokes/and Morrow causing night terrors.
Any links to CF highlights?
Kermit. - April 9, 2009
The plays I saw Gutz make were not spectacular or dramatic enough to make any highlight reel.
But they were spectacular and dramatic because he took away like four base hits with his range. He actually overran a line drive in the gap; that is how good he is.
Wilder. - April 9, 2009
You missed the first inning, didn't you?
marc w - April 9, 2009
That I did.
Just saw the highlight. I had the entire game on while in my classes, but I obviously didn’t see every out. What an amazing catch. And he still took another 3-4 hits away during the rest of the game.
Wilder. - April 9, 2009
So the Mariners win and the Angels lose 20% of their rotation
It seems the tables are turning
