Question Jeff
I feel like sometimes with the WE chart you make corrections to the FG data, on errors or defensive plays and the like…did you give Gutierrez (or Cedeno or Yuni) credit for any of the plays they made behind Washburn?
Sportszilla - April 9, 2009
Nope
Jeff Sullivan - April 9, 2009
Someone should maybe take that upon himself as a project.
Llewdor - April 9, 2009
Was this something you've done in the past
Or am I misremembering?
Sportszilla - April 9, 2009
I used to do it a long time ago but decided it was entirely too subjective to continue
Jeff Sullivan - April 9, 2009
Once Hit F/X comes around...
Couldn’t you use a system giving partial credit for plays based on the probability of that play being made (like advanced defensive metrics, if I’m not mistaken) and make a sexy fielding-inclusive WPA?
Simon Phoenix - April 9, 2009
ehh
Not worth the effort.
Jeff Sullivan - April 9, 2009
I was just gonna ask this.

Biggest Contribution: Jarrod Washburn
It’s like Backwards Day at school!
section331 - April 9, 2009
Small sample and all that
but Yuni’s showing some agility in the field that just was not there last year. I know you’ve already made not of it (was it the Silva start?) but its worth reiterating.
If Yuni plays above average defense this year it’ll be worth an extra win for the team at least. The outfield was projected to be awesome and is so far as advertised. Beltre is still great, Lopez will be /-5 runs, Branyan/Sweeney/Shelton also. If Yuni can recapture some of that 0<x<10 magic we’re looking at a .500 true talent team (I’m assuming Clement is back with the big club come May).
Bearskin Rugburn - April 9, 2009
If Yuni plays above average defense this year I will eat my hat.
Aaron Campeau - April 9, 2009
You should buy a nacho hat
Jeff Sullivan - April 9, 2009
Nacho nacho man...
Phil Hatzenbuehler - April 9, 2009
I want to be a nacho man.
Thingray - April 9, 2009
It's not at all improbable
see Jeter, Derek.
Bearskin Rugburn - April 9, 2009
When was the last time he played above average defense?
pdb - April 9, 2009
He played average defense last year after posting a -18 season
Bearskin Rugburn - April 9, 2009
Putting up average defensive numbers over the course of one season isn't the same as playing average defense.
Aaron Campeau - April 9, 2009
same goes for putting up miiserable defensive numbers
and Yuni’s only got one season of that, to go with three seasons of average.
Bearskin Rugburn - April 9, 2009
Sure, but Jeter still looked bad and Yuni looked bad in 2007 despite being only -2.8.
Aaron Campeau - April 9, 2009
Yuni started airmailing throws to first in 07 but I don't remember him looking bad
he was also just a touch below average by PMR and RZR. Maybe your memory betrays you?
Bearskin Rugburn - April 9, 2009
I remember him looking worse than I expected
however I expected greatness, so “worse” could’ve easily meant average.
Jeff Sullivan - April 9, 2009
Yeah that was basically the year we realized that we didn't have
a magic Cuban baseball bunny hopping around every which way scooping up grounders but a pretty much normal player with a tendency to throw well wide of first. But he wasn’t bad. Specifically, I remember him ranging way out into left field to grab shallow flies Ibanez couldn’t get to.
Bearskin Rugburn - April 9, 2009
I remember a noticable dropoff
but as Jeff said below he was so awesome before that it’s possible that a huge dropoff means below average.
Aaron Campeau - April 9, 2009
The BIS based metrics don't think he was ever exceptional
and I think we may have been charmed by a handful of flashy plays. All the same, I think a slimmer, more focused, scared for his job Betancourt can possibly end up in the 0 – (+)10 range.
Bearskin Rugburn - April 9, 2009
Yuni has looked bad since 2006.
Sec 108 - April 9, 2009
For what it's worth, PMR doesn't think Yuni was so awful last year
they have him at -10, which may seem bad at first but the range is 35 to -30.
Bearskin Rugburn - April 9, 2009
SBN ate my plusses
wtf. And you had made a note, as opposed to a not, of Yuni’s defense.
Bearskin Rugburn - April 9, 2009
Yuni did a fine job of making a not of his defense all by himself.
Aaron Campeau - April 9, 2009
Damn, missed this game.
Wish I could have seen those stellar defensive plays that everyone is raving about.
redwolf75 - April 9, 2009
Jarrod Washburn +66.9
Holy shit…
Slurvey - April 9, 2009
It's gonna be funny as hell when
Jarrod and his 10-6, 3.13 ERA self gets traded for a top-50 prospect later this season.
craig3410 - April 9, 2009
Can't complain that we've got 6 games against the Angels this month
5 of those with Ichiro back, and three of them should be Felix/Bedard starts. Angels should have Saunders, Weaver and Loux pitching most of them. Here’s hoping we can go 5-1 in those series.
Bearskin Rugburn - April 9, 2009
None of our games against the Angels next week feature Felix or Bedard
The best we can hope for is that they’ll both go against Anaheim in the latter series of this month.
katal - April 9, 2009
I realized after I posted that I miscalculated
It’d be nice to skip Wasburn or RRS after the day off Monday to shift things a bit but whatever.
Bearskin Rugburn - April 9, 2009
I'm hoipng Jakubaukas starts on Saturday, EriKKKKKKKKK on Sunday then Felix Tuesday.
Or something along the lines just not Silva on the home opener please!
Slurvey - April 9, 2009
They'll pitch Silva for the home opener because they are almost guaranteed a sellout.
The games will not sellout and you want your biggest draws when attendance isn’t guaranteed.
Wilder. - April 9, 2009
The games after*
Wilder. - April 9, 2009
This would be fantastic =)
especially if Felix goes on Friday
seattlebruin - April 9, 2009
I was looking at the schedule
to see if I would get to see Felix or Bedard when the M’s are in town at the end of the month, and I think it comes out to being Bedard on Friday, Silva Saturday, Washburn Sunday. Or something worse.

Your job must take up the vast majority of your valuable time.

In terms of hours committed
I think I go personal life > blog > sleep > day job
Jeff Sullivan - April 9, 2009
Where's beer on that list?
Matthew - April 9, 2009
His woman didn't make the list either
JI - April 9, 2009
Pretty sure she's all of "personal life"
Kirsten Schlewitz - April 9, 2009
I do have a friend
Jeff Sullivan - April 9, 2009
That's part of the graph?
hmmm
JI - April 9, 2009
Included in all four actually

As it should be
JI - April 9, 2009
Split with Ichiro out?
I’ll take it
phil333 - April 9, 2009
Is there any single game that better illustrates the point from this offseason
of “a run saved is as good as a run scored”?
I sure don’t think so.
seattlesundevil - April 9, 2009
Rec'd because I was going to say that myself!
PositivePaul - April 9, 2009
A run saved is as good as a run scored
Should have been the new slogan for this team. Fuck a new day a new way.
kentroyals5 - April 9, 2009
Technically it is a very new way
Jeff Sullivan - April 9, 2009
That picture is priceless!

I like how in the background the bride is just sitting there looking sad.

re: Wak's 9th inning defensive adjustment
I thought this was a fantastic move, even if the benefit was marginal. It made me wonder if or how often other AL managers have made the move to forfeit their DH in late innings for the sake of an unforced defense adjustment.
sammy - April 9, 2009
Just seeing Wak make that move gives me hope that Griffey won't be seeing much outfield this season.

Still one of my favorite new memes this year
Every time I talk to someone about the Ms this year, the idea of the Mariner train goes through my head. And now I have a picture. Weeeeeee goes the insanity…
