This is not a must win series per se, but it is a pretty important one. Get swept and Zduriencik should start making trades for 2010. Sweep and we even up records with the Angels and probably gain a game on Texas leaving us still long shots but long shots with a soft June schedule.
Of course we are far more likely to neither sweep or be swept which would not change much at all, though a 2-1 series loss still knocks at least one foot over the edge. We are pretty big underdogs in this series and research has shown that for underdogs to win, they need to play their own game and take more high variance risks so I think we should go for it on every 4th down of this series and pull the goalie. Rob Johnson sucks anyways.
Remember last series when I remarked how we played the Giants at home and managed to still perform at a below average level? Well, we just played the Athletics and managed to still perform at a below average level. We faced the Athletics offense and our pitchers got worse.
Game 1: Jason Vargas* vs. John Lackey
Game 2: Felix Hernandez vs. Matt Palmer
Game 3: Chris Jakubauskas vs. Ervin Santana
It's too early in their seasons to talk much about either John Lackey or Ervin Santana, though Jeff did point out something worth paying attention to on Sunday afternoon.
With the end of the month approaching and an installment of the report cards looming, I'm going to pass on looking into the Mariner starters this series as well.
That leaves Matt Palmer. Matt Palmer isn't very interesting. Sorry.

Undercover Investigation Shut-Down Ale
Lagunitas Brewing Company. Petaluma, CA
Lagunitas' 12th anniversary brew. Has a clear auburn body with a nice thick slightly off white head with great lacing. Aroma is clear and unambiguous hops paired with an expectantly bitter taste, well balanced with malts to give a creamy palate.

Matt Palmer is so damn generic.
Also, I feel like Lagunitas should get more love than it does.
Jeff Sullivan - May 29, 2009
Their IPA is my staple.
InSpokane - May 29, 2009
I honestly think it's because their beer is so cheap.
Which is retarded, but there you go.
Aaron Campeau - May 29, 2009
I had this same thought when buying beer last week.
Kirsten Schlewitz - May 29, 2009
My friend sings Lagunitas' praises, but I don't think I've ever had anything from there.
I shall change that.
Teej - May 29, 2009
The red's pretty good as is the pale ale
pdb - May 29, 2009
Also Cappucino Stout when it's that time of year.
Aaron Campeau - May 29, 2009
if I didn't detest the taste of coffee I might agree with you
but I’d have to defer this one to my wife who is the coffee and stout drinker in our house.
pdb - May 29, 2009
You'd probably like their Gnarly Wine
Jeff Sullivan - May 29, 2009
Not a big barley wine fan in my limited experience, but I'll check it out.
Teej - May 29, 2009
I got posters confused
Yeah, go for the cappuccino stout instead.
Jeff Sullivan - May 29, 2009
Hop Stoopid might be one of the most bitter things alive.
Matthew - May 29, 2009
It's not good which I think was kind of the point.
Aaron Campeau - May 29, 2009
Wait what?
Matthew - May 29, 2009
That definitely sounds more enticing.
Teej - May 29, 2009
Should be available at (m)any of the locations I've told you about
Jeff Sullivan - May 29, 2009
Who were you directing this toward?
Kirsten Schlewitz - May 29, 2009
Matt Palmer not interesting!?
I see how it is. You’re terrified. You know what’s coming. You know what a badass Matt Palmer is. He’s going to shut you down. Since you love those stats, let’s take a look at the most important one, shall we? He’s 5 and 0. No losses. This motherfucker is invincible. Look at him. Look at this man:
That is the face of a panther. He is hardcore. You’re real scared now, I bet. Just you watch. And maybe, by the end of the game tomorrow, Felix might actually learn something about pitching from the MASTER.
Eyebrows - May 29, 2009
Matt Palmer is the latest in a long line of nobody pitchers who look like my barber
Jeff Sullivan - May 29, 2009
That smells.
Fin - May 29, 2009
I haven't decided if he smells yet
Jeff Sullivan - May 29, 2009
that seems to be a decision that wouldn't take much contemplation
pdb - May 29, 2009
oh and you use a barber?
pdb - May 29, 2009
Seems all he would need would be a razor at the lowest setting.
Kirsten Schlewitz - May 29, 2009
Ex-barber
Jeff Sullivan - May 29, 2009
What's wrong with using a barber?
Goose - May 29, 2009
Nothing if you have hair
but Jeff appears to be a number-1 buzz kind of guy, from the pictures I’ve seen.
pdb - May 29, 2009
True.
Eyebrows - May 29, 2009
I like Reggie Willits now
I’d rather complete what the Koreans couldn’t and kill Joe Saunders.
Jeff Sullivan - May 29, 2009
Can you imagine how that corpse would smell?
Aaron Campeau - May 29, 2009
Like John Lackey
Jeff Sullivan - May 29, 2009
Or Mike Napoli
InSpokane - May 29, 2009
Or Nick Adenhart
pdb - May 29, 2009
Oh, pdb. :(
JUST KIDDING YAHTZEE

He's the master of inverted W's and his arm will most likely explode to a couple of u's.
Jed MC - May 29, 2009
It worked; I'm intimidated now.
royalcurve - May 29, 2009
Felix v. Palmer rematch!
This should be good.
Fin - May 29, 2009
As long as it isn't Felix's favorite holiday
Dia de la Fastball
eponymous_coward - May 29, 2009
So anyone going to any of the games?
Depending upon the weather I might try to make it Saturday or Sunday.
bluemax - May 29, 2009
sb and I are going to Saturday's game
abender20 - May 29, 2009
Not this time.
Teej - May 29, 2009
Felix day!
abender20 - May 29, 2009
Felix day is tempting
I have to head sort of East on Sunday to pick something up so it makes sense to just go from their to the game.
What time is Saturday’s game, 6:05?
bluemax - May 29, 2009
Yup
abender20 - May 29, 2009
Thinking about it but skeptical
Jeff Sullivan - May 29, 2009
Felix day!
abender20 - May 29, 2009
I hate driving home from Anaheim after night games
Jeff Sullivan - May 29, 2009
Take the train?
Eyebrows - May 29, 2009
I hate being controlled by their schedule and sometimes the games run later than the trains do
Jeff Sullivan - May 29, 2009
Catch a ride home with Nick Adenhart.
Sec 108 - May 29, 2009
How do you feel about driving home from Anaheim after a night game in which the Mariner offense is shut down by Matt Palmer and Felix pitches stupidly?
Matthew - May 29, 2009
Or even better, after a game where Felix gets hurt by Torri Hunter and you have to drive home not knowing the extent of the injury? Oh and Morrow blows the save.
EnglishMariner - May 29, 2009
On a Torii Hunter walk off grand slam.
Eyebrows - May 29, 2009
YES!
EnglishMariner - May 29, 2009
Now we're talking
abender20 - May 29, 2009
I guess it wouldn't be worse than driving home from Anaheim after watching Ottawa lose in the Stanley Cup
Jeff Sullivan - May 29, 2009
I hate that you made this comment before I could.
Poochie - May 30, 2009
Oh and by the way Matthew
your strategy obviously sucks. You only pull the goalie with two strikes, or if there’s at least one player on the team carrying a yellow card.
And you call yourself an analyst.
pdb - May 29, 2009
We should start calling Rob Johnson Jon Ryan
I mean, we’re punting whenever Johnson comes in…
Graham MacAree - May 29, 2009
I can't stand people calling him Jon Ryan
It makes me think of another Seattle player named Ryan, and I hate the comparison.
R. Johnson is a terrible player. Jon Ryan is a ginger punter, who may or may not be a terrible player.
Call him Johnson, please. For my brain’s sake.
abender20 - May 29, 2009
Could you quit with the Seahawks crap?
We get it – you like the way their team is put together, and they have some great young talent.
This is a Mariners blog though and I don’t see many other SBN editors posting praise for other clubs. It’s not funny or anything either.
.Taylor - May 29, 2009
I'm watching the Orioles game. Wieters is gonna hit pretty soon.
Flew out into double play his first AB.
Decatur - May 29, 2009
Also, the Tigers' announcer and color commentator Rod Allen seem pretty solid - that is, unobjectionable, which is pretty awesome as far as announcers go (Sims + Neihaus = awesome of course)
Decatur - May 29, 2009
Per Baker Olson will be starting Sunday instead of Jakubauskas
That’s a strange move
Corco - May 29, 2009
I heard Jak was just flipped to the White Sox.
Eyebrows - May 29, 2009
what
Corco - May 29, 2009
For a little bridge?
OlSalty - May 29, 2009
Like an errant Yuni throw
