Jose Lopez on Bereavement.

I figure we might as well give this its own post rather than having it pop up on all other threads. Larry Stone with the news. Chris Woodward has been recalled and Ronny Cedeno is taking over second base in the meantime. One of our catchers is likely going to be DFA'd in order to make room on the 40-man.

Will it be the magical third time for Jamie Burke, who you think might take the hint, or will it be yet another for Quiroz who you would think might take the hint that the team wouldn't even start him over Jamie Burke as a sign to seek employment elsewhere?

Per Shannon Drayer, the reason for Lopez's departure is to be with his dying sister.

UPDATE: Shannon Drayer with more details.

Aw man.

Not Lopez’s sister too…

For what it's worth, pregame radio said that Silva was transferred to the 60 day DL to make room for Woodward.
So no Silva until early July at the earliest.

Neat.

July 6th I believe, fyi
Although I have a sneaking suspicion it's more like March of 2010.
Divish seems to think there's a good chance we're not going to see Silva again this season.
My little heart can't take it!
Ah, well that makes sense too.
Wow.

That’s an interesting move.

Also, that the M’s are bringing in Morse, who has the superior hitting numbers but much weaker defense.

The way the new FO makes decisions is really rather different from what we’re accustomed to.

Wait, what? Morse?
Probably meant to type "aren't"
Those two letters and apostrophe were really important to my point.

I was going to suggest that the move supports the notion that the M’s new FO values defense, but then I thought about the way the Tacoma roster is constructed, which has been primarily throwing defense to the wind and getting the biggest hitter in any given spot.

They’re doing rather contradictory things with the triple-A and the MLB club.

Does AAA really matter, though?

Isn’t it a place for players to develop, both offensively and defensively?

In our case...

we don’t have much there outside of Saunders, Carp, Moore, Clement. There’s not much to like on the pitching staff, except Fister.

Yeah, it seems as though they just want the best players up there at AAA, even if they have to play out of position.

There’s just too much 1B/DH talent for one team.

Could be that they value defense and are just using Tacoma as a place they're praying to find one more bat for the team
Could be.

Shelton could come in handy one of these days. But running out Shelton at third every night, with Nelson, LaHair, or Morse as possible outfielders, is pretty crazy.

Shelton could come in handy tomorrow, if they could just let Sweeney go.
I don't think that happens until he gets injured.

And even then, they keep him around for morale purposes.

I was actually surprised to see that he’s at 40.9% xbh. That’s more than 5% above his career numbers, so he’s still driving the ball, he’s just not making contact all that often.

Probably not, but it should.

If Sweeney could take a walk, it might not be quite so awful: 3 BBs in 99 PAs. Last year Shelton had 17 BBs in 117 PAs.

Wow dude.

I am wondering if he has done any actually pitching since he was put on the DL.

Quiroz did try to find employment elsewhere ...

The only reason he returned to the Mariners on a minor league contract for this season is because no other team was interested in him.

Holy moly.

Three players within a week go on the BL. Crazy.

I don't think they put Branyan on the BL, but it is still crazy and very sad. I don't believe in clubhouse chemistry having a significant affect on performance but I have to imagine that three awful events in the same week has taken its toll on the team.
They will respond with remarkable determination and band together to take the division and the World Series.

A man can dream.

(If it seems like I’m making light of the situation, I don’t mean to. It really is awful.)

Nothing wrong with hoping for the best from a bad situation.
Oh, I guess they didn't

Should have known better. Branyan is too manly to bereave.

It sounded like he'll just be gone the day of the funeral, then back with the team, so no need for the bereavement list
I figured it is how they were able to call Carp up.

But that doesn’t make any sense since he played last night with Branyan in the game. Luckily we have a team that is full of injuries and swapping players around is easy!

Great. he's going to suck for the rest of the season.
Maybe if he actually likes his sister he'll hit really well.
How would we tell?
There is no floor
If he suddenly starts playing worse after he comes back
How sudden?

Like so sudden he was doing it preemptively?

Aw.

You beat me to it.

I am damn glad i'm not related to Jose
That sucks. Poor Lopez. Good luck to him.
.

Wrex doesn't strike me as the crying type

However, this is some lousy news and I wish Lopez the best through all of this. Cancer really fucking sucks. A lot

Lopez is on bereavement to mourn the passing of his potential as a ML regular
wrong
fucking wrong
Oh you're right I forgot about all those RBIs
no, not so much

That's awful. I feel bad for the guy. His family's had enough grief for a long damn time.
Poor Lopez, losing another sibling.
That's terrible. Hope he gets back in time to see her before she passes.

IF you haven’t done so, read Drayers blog. We can get on the guy pretty good for some of his shortcomings on the field. But he sounds like a really nice guy who has his priorities straight. God bless him and his family.
