Well, that didn't last long. Larry LaRue with the word:
Just when hasn't been decided, but within the next week Beltre will have surgery that will likely keep him out of the Seattle Mariners lineup 6-8 weeks.
According to reports, Beltre is under a severe amount of pain every time he lifts his arm above shoulder height. That he was going to try and play through that for three months and change is a testament to just how strong willed the man is. Unfortunately for him and for the team, he is not going to be able to make it.
Based on the timeline, do not expect to see Adrian back until around the middle to end of August.

Let's just keep piling on eh?
So much for an entertaining trade deadline..

Isn't there a category worse than "awful news?"
seattlebruin - June 27, 2009
Oh God, does this mean it's Tui time?
I’m ready for the epic .178/.245/.315 over 45 games
seattlebruin - June 27, 2009
According to Stone
Zduriencik says Lopez and Woodward are the first two names that come to mind.. Maybe he gets creative and turns the right stone a la Branyan
seattlesundevil - June 27, 2009
That could be interesting
Loafie might be a disaster at third though
seattlebruin - June 27, 2009
So much different from normal?
Kirsten Schlewitz - June 27, 2009
Aren't second and third around the same difficulty of play?
joof - June 27, 2009
I've never thought of Lopez as a great reactions guy, more of an average range/arm 2B
not sure his skillset is right for 3B, but I’ll defer to the experts for the time being.
Hopefully he puts up a nice SSS UZR of +10/150 or something
seattlebruin - June 27, 2009
Not exactly
You need a good arm to play third, while second errs more on the side of range
Poochie - June 28, 2009
Seriously.
At least he only has to suck going one direction though..
seattlesundevil - June 27, 2009
According to LaRue
it’s Lopez —> 3rd, Woodward/Cedeno —> 2nd
I Lick Squirrels - June 27, 2009
We don't have a shortstop
Graham MacAree - June 27, 2009
I feel like we're pretty much obligated to try Branyan at third and Carp at first
Jeff Sullivan - June 27, 2009
And yet Jack doesn't mention Branyan as an option
sigh
Jeff Sullivan - June 27, 2009
I wouldn't mind calling up Shelton and trying him at third
God it’s going to suck if Cedeno and Woodward are both in the lineup every day.
OlSalty - June 27, 2009
On the plus side we didn't have to wait another nine days to find out our season is over
Jeff Sullivan - June 27, 2009
We're gonna go 8-0 just to spite us
and convince GMZ to not rebuild and to go for the playoffs and trade prospects for more bats and that will hurt our rebuilding down the line because we won’t be rebuilding we’ll be building for the present instead of the future and that will hurt our rebuilding long term.
seattlebruin - June 27, 2009
Maybe Bedard will actually come back and not be injured and pitch well enough before the deadline to net us something good
Also maybe monkeys will fly out of my butt.
OlSalty - June 27, 2009
We're so fucked
seattlebruin - June 27, 2009
Definately. At this point you may just have to say F the defense with Endy and Adrian down
and do whatever is possible to get some offense on the field. Branyan to 3rd and Carp at 1st would be arrangement.
Rudy4three - June 27, 2009
GOD
Graham MacAree - June 27, 2009
Chavez is out for the season, Bedard is questionable, now Beltre's out until August.
They better make some noise this road trip, because if they struggle, they won’t even be able to be sellers this deadline.
katal - June 27, 2009
Aardsma and Washburn!!
seattlebruin - June 27, 2009
I hope so.
They’re both due for some hardcore regression, though.
katal - June 27, 2009
I'm not convinced Washburn is due for that that bad of regression
though tRA doesn’t like him, FIP does. A lot of that of course is due to a really depressed HR/FB rate, but he’s making that back with a hugely increased SwStr rate and strikeout rate. I’d be surprised if his true talent was 23.3% LDs – it doesn’t seem like he’s being hit all that hard.
seattlebruin - June 27, 2009
Any idea on how this will effect his possible re-signing with the team?
I can’t see GMZ allowing a player of Beltre’s caliber walk away. This has to lower his price and GMZ knows his value.
Wilder. - June 27, 2009
He still is a Boras client, though..
seattlesundevil - June 27, 2009
Hot damn. Even if the team wanted to sell, the parts worth anything are all getting hurt.
jimmylauderdale - June 27, 2009
Is Justin Leone available?
seattlebruin - June 27, 2009
Not only is he available..
He is tearing up AAA for NYY…. Oh, what’s that you say? a .578 OPS is terrible? Oh.. well… shit.
seattlesundevil - June 27, 2009
It's fantastic if he's hitting .000/.578/.000
seattlebruin - June 27, 2009
Word from Drayer: Beltre's last game is tomorrow.
Matthew - June 27, 2009
Called it :( :( :( :( :( :(
He did not look like he was able to deal with the pain well enough to play these last few games.
This sucks.
OlSalty - June 27, 2009
Boodrian
Kirsten Schlewitz - June 27, 2009
You know, "Yaydrian" works because it rhymes with "Adrian"
“Boodrian” does not rhyme with anyones name. Unless some parent crazily named their kid Foobrian or something.
seattlebruin - June 27, 2009
I was trying to bring a smile. Why, I do not know
Kirsten Schlewitz - June 27, 2009
There is no joy in Mudville today =(
seattlebruin - June 27, 2009
Naydrian?

2009: A New Day, A New Way, But Still No Floor
JAH - June 27, 2009
Re: No floor
My fear is that we’ll end the season one game above .500.
Considering how much money we have coming off the books, it seems safe to assume that we’ll sign at least one Type A free agent. So of course we’re going to have to lose a draft pick in the process.
katal - June 27, 2009
I didn't think it was possible to end the season 1 game above .500
Since every win necessitates the absence of a loss, and vice-versa, and the number of wins and losses must add up to 162, a team could go 81-81or 82-80, .500 and 2 games over, respectively, but nothing in between. Unless a game was canceled and never made up or something, maybe.
I Lick Squirrels - June 27, 2009
Good point.
Two games.
katal - June 27, 2009
Has anyone talked to Red?
He must be on a ledge right now, poor guy.
