Today's Fun Fact(s)

-
The Texas Rangers haven't had a single starting pitcher turn in an average or above-average season to date.
- Staying with the theme, if you add up the total contributions made by the rotation, the bullpen, the defense, and the offense...
Mariners: 8.1 - 13.8 + 22.6 - 46.5 = -29.6 runs (relative to average)
Rangers: -40.4 - 17.0 + 15.3 - 15.0 = -57.1 runs
...the Mariners have been the better team in 2009.
- Remember how some people got all up in arms before the season when the Rangers were projected to score 775-800 runs? They're on pace for 786.
Hey!
This is a fun fact! In a schadenfraude sorta way.
And who would’ve thought, looking at all those superstars in the Texas lineup, that the M’s would be the better team up to this point?
One other thing; taking the average fan who is completely unbiased, which do you think they would choose as the better team with just a precursory glance at each 25-man roster?
JLProck - June 29, 2009
It helps that Josh Hamilton is injured and Chris Davis strikes out 45.2% of the time.
abender20 - June 29, 2009
You know who's seen the biggest boost in playing time with Hamilton's injury?
David Murphy.
Murphy since Hamilton went down: .293/.346/.467
The Rangers’ offense has been absolutely miserable in June. And Murphy’s been the only guy hitting.
Jeff Sullivan - June 29, 2009
I like David Murphy, even if it took about a year to figure out the difference between Daniel and David.
abender20 - June 29, 2009
Hamilton should stop smoking crack.
He wouldn’t be injured so much if he did.
I can’t remember what his injury is, but I’m sure he got it while fleeing a drug dealer that he just robbed.
JLProck - June 29, 2009
Well now we're going to have visitors
Thanks a lot.
Jeff Sullivan - June 29, 2009
The asshole alarm just went off over there.
Batten down the hatches!
JLProck - June 29, 2009
Absolutely Texas
Jeff Sullivan - June 29, 2009
This is the most fun I've had whilst reading a fact in weeks.
Poochie - June 29, 2009
I refuse to believe this.
Kevin Millwood is one of the best pitchers in baseball this year.
Manzanillos Cup - June 29, 2009
85.9% LOB
Millwood’s been lucky.
Jeff Sullivan - June 29, 2009
Yeah.
It’s crazy – He’s striking out less batters than he ever has, and his HR/FB is high for him, yet he’s like 3rd in the league in ERA or some ridiculous thing.
Manzanillos Cup - June 29, 2009
Jarrod Washburn, everybody
Jeff Sullivan - June 29, 2009
Two seam fastball. All the difference in the world.
abender20 - June 29, 2009
That, and he's a vet.
Tough and gritty, y’know?
JLProck - June 29, 2009
I was referring to Washburn's season immediately prior to his signing here
Jeff Sullivan - June 29, 2009
He's a different pitcher now, so that makes sense.
I could see him sustaining this level of play for at least 5 years. If that’s not worth two A-level prospects, I don’t know what is.
abender20 - June 29, 2009
I do believe the answer you're looking for is "Elvis Andrus."
Inkara1 - June 29, 2009
He'll have you know that he makes his own luck, thank you very much!
JLProck - June 29, 2009
Also, does everyone remember when we were being dominated by the likes of Matt Harrison and Vicente "The Necromancer" Padilla?
Good times.
JLProck - June 29, 2009
You pretend those days are over
abender20 - June 29, 2009
Seriously, have you considered the magnitude of a Lopez, Yuni, Cedeno/Woodward infield?
abender20 - June 29, 2009
Mike Carp and Russell Branyan please.
We’ll still have to deal with a combination of Yuni/Lopez/Cedeno/Woodward in the middle, but the corners would be okay.
JLProck - June 29, 2009
As much as that looks like the most appealing option, signs aren't pointing towards that.
abender20 - June 29, 2009
Well second would be fine as well
seattlebruin - June 29, 2009
Don't count your chickens just yet matey...
EnglishMariner - June 29, 2009
How could I forget?
Eyebrows - June 29, 2009
Oh hey, you still can't collapse images. My bad.
Eyebrows - June 29, 2009
Why can't any of the subject lines be collapsed?
Fin - June 29, 2009
Bug. Being worked on.
Matthew - June 29, 2009
Is Vicente really pals with Snoop Dogg?
Fuh shizzle, dizzle.
JLProck - June 29, 2009
The AL West is hilariously bad.
buy, buy, buy!
Matthew - June 29, 2009
So, in glancing at potential "established veteran" trade targets...
Christian Guzman
Jeff Keppinger
Freddy Sanchez
Jack Wilson
Felipe Lopez
Troy Glaus
Matt Holliday
Aubrey Huff
Rich Harden
Mike Gonzalez
Rafael Soriano
Ty Wigginton
Freddy Sanchez makes sense to me
Poochie - June 29, 2009
I can't believe I want Yuni back
Jeff Sullivan - June 29, 2009
I can't believe it either.
Because I don’t want him back unless it means Fogel shows up in gamethreads again
Poochie - June 29, 2009
I can't believe I want Tuglett back
Bearskin Rugburn - June 29, 2009
On the surface, it doesn't look too bad.
With all the winning records, and with two teams having positive run differentials. But when approached by linear weights – yeah, not so good.
Manzanillos Cup - June 29, 2009
What are the chances the Rangers manage to trade for a decent starting pitcher before 7/31?
Spoomeister - June 29, 2009
I don't know, but (A) a player can only make so much of an impact over a couple months, and (B) a good pitcher won't come cheap
Jeff Sullivan - June 29, 2009
Lets give them Washburn for Neftali Feliz
Bearskin Rugburn - June 29, 2009
and (C)
The Rangers need like six decent pitchers.
Matthew - June 29, 2009
Sure, but every little bit helps
A win gained is a win gained.
Jeff Sullivan - June 29, 2009
Of course.
Matthew - June 29, 2009
And (D) it seems really, really unlikely that ownership is willing to take on salary at this point in time.
Aaron Campeau - June 29, 2009
Should have kept A-Rod
Poochie - June 29, 2009
Bedard for a catcher!
Poochie - June 29, 2009
Over 20% PECOTA playoffs odds
WHOOOOOOOO.
And one needs to remember here that PECOTA does not sufficiently value Ichiro and defense. Then again, we just lost Beltre so maybe it evens out.
Bearskin Rugburn - June 29, 2009
I like our chances so far. This could be an exciting September
d0nkey - June 29, 2009
Let the battle of the least-suckiest commence!
Eyebrows - June 29, 2009
We're losing!
seattlebruin - June 29, 2009
It's funny how quickly the next six games could still eliminate comments like these
Jeff Sullivan - June 29, 2009
Yet another fun fact!
pdb - June 29, 2009
I am terrified that the Yankees are going to utterly destroy us
OlSalty - June 29, 2009
Or intensify them even further.
ThundaPC - June 29, 2009
We play the Angels at home Aug 31-Sep 2.
Lollablueza part two, bitches!
Matthew - June 29, 2009
We get to win it all in the sequel!
Poochie - June 29, 2009
These facts lately are a little too fun for my liking.
Stop getting my hopes up.
