Was at the game tonight
Sick catch by Gutierrez only made Balentien’s comedy of errors in left field look even worse. Gutierrez saved the game, only to have Balentien hand it right back. Dick.
Gihyou - June 5, 2009
Wonder if the glove would be more effective with the chainsaw attachment...
msb - June 5, 2009
I was there at the game and Guti's catch made me jizz in my pants and I started bowing.
The Wlad play I knew was gonna be close since he misread the ball and had to go back AND IT BOUNCED OFF HIS FUCKING GLOVE!
Slurvey - June 5, 2009
I can't believe they gave him Moyer's number.
Poochie - June 5, 2009
The time has indeed arrived, for a new fourth outfielder.
And as of this moment, an upgrade will be an easily attainable goal.
Noblewildcat - June 6, 2009
Might be a guy in Tacoma I've heard of

Prentice Redman!

Actually we've a got a very good one in Endy. A starting left fielder might be what we're looking for.

Wouldn't it be easier just to use the subject line?

If only Franklin was more black..he would have jumped so much higher to catch the ball tonight.

Jeff Sullivan - June 6, 2009
Worst game of the year for me.
Kelly going down, plus Stark’s epic fail was a double-cockpunch that ruined my whole week.
Benne - June 6, 2009
This is hilarious
OlSalty - June 6, 2009
In retrospect it is a perfect summation of our season to this point.

If thats a Johjima nut shot that im seeing, my life is complete.
JamMasterJesus - June 6, 2009
I never ever thought I would see the glory that is a Kenji and a Vidro nutshot in one thread.
I think my head might explode.
Zwakamatsu - June 6, 2009
Well the Vidro one was a headshot. You get the picture though.
Zwakamatsu - June 6, 2009
Players who make me mad should foul more pitches off of themselves, thats for sure.
JamMasterJesus - June 6, 2009
Significant pain is the key.
Zwakamatsu - June 6, 2009
I feel like it's sort of an eye for an eye thing
JamMasterJesus - June 6, 2009
Vidro doesn't have enough eyes.
Zwakamatsu - June 6, 2009
That's because i took them; I had had enough.

He’s probably asking ‘are you alright?’
How caring!

Kenny Lofton was awesome
Jeff Sullivan - June 6, 2009
Literally the first thought in my head after I found this
was ‘How the fuck could he not get a job?’
Poochie - June 6, 2009
Why are these better than Poochie and JI's if you've been gifing for a much shorter time?
Robert - June 6, 2009
His budget is infinitely bigger than mine
Poochie - June 6, 2009
I would have used the word taller there but hey its your comment not mine.
Robert - June 6, 2009
Money is not measured in height you imbecile
Poochie - June 6, 2009
I've heard of money being measured in stacks so I believe you are incorrect
Dewey N - June 6, 2009
I, for one, think it's about time that we round up a posse.
I was rooting for Balentien for months and was really enjoying his progress, but after today, I’ve become convinced that he should be hung from a tree in front of his family. Also, we should set fire to Don Wakamatsu’s home.
LIGHT YOUR TORCHES!
Teej - June 6, 2009
I didn't see the game.
What retard thing did Wlad do tonight?
Benne - June 6, 2009
Decided that the tenth inning would be the perfect time to try his Raul Ibanez impression.
BrianL - June 6, 2009
Meh.
I would be more angry about him if our dogshit offense had actually done something for the first 9 innings.
Benne - June 6, 2009
Wlad!
Slow Country - June 6, 2009
God fucking damn it.
Now Wlad’s going to be Rob Johnson 2.0 around here for a few weeks. Fuck.
marc w - June 6, 2009
I remember when he was supposed to be Adam Jones 2.0.
Fin - June 6, 2009
Of course the M's traded the good player and kept the shitty one.
russak - June 6, 2009
Damnit that one stings.
Dub9 - June 6, 2009
I remember when people thought AJ sucked because he dropped some fly balls and hit .200.
marc w - June 6, 2009
The difference, of course, is that Balentien has plate approach problems that Major League pitchers can easily exploit, while Jones does not.
Not to nearly the same extent at least. Also, Jones has hit at the MLB level while Wlad has not. And Jones is younger. And plays CF quite well.
I understand what you’re going for Marc, but c’mon. Wlad might be somewhat useful at some point but Jones is light years ahead of him.
Aaron Campeau - June 6, 2009
I don't think this is a comparison of AJ to Wlad now
it’s a comparison of AJ when he was a young Mariner to Wlad as a young Mariner today.
Jeff Sullivan - June 6, 2009
I understand that, but I don't think it's a fair comparison.
Jones dropped some balls, but his routes and jumps were obviously improving and he was still new to the position. Wlad has always been an OFer and aside from a short period of time when he looked better in LF he doesn’t seem to have improved at all.
Aaron Campeau - June 6, 2009
I hate to be contrarian, but every time I've seen AJ play, he's taken crappy routes.
It seems like he’s just fast enough to outrun some bad jumps. I’m no scout, so my opinion doesn’t have any real weight, but I guess I’m saying even if his routes were improving, they were, and still seem to my eyes, to be pretty bad routes.
BrettJMiller - June 6, 2009
I wouldn't necessarily disagree.
Jones is still definitely learning as a CFer but as you said, he has the speed to overcome bad routes, whereas Wlad doesn’t. I’ve only seen him play five or six times this year, but compared to last season it really seems like he’s gotten better. His first step seems correct more often than not, which I recall being a huge problem in the (rather limited) time I saw him last year.
But like you said, this is all based on an absurdly small sample of watching the two of them play the OF. I agree that Jones still has some work to do in terms of his instincts and route running. But when he first came up he made current Wlad look like vintage Andruw Jones in terms of his fielding instincts. Even is he’s still bad at reading balls and getting to them he’s way better than he once was and he’s so athletically gifted he can overcome it more often than not.
Aaron Campeau - June 6, 2009
Although I suppose it's worth pointing out that 2008 looks like an outlier at the moment
but that’s working with less than two full seasons of data so yeah.
Aaron Campeau - June 6, 2009
Where the fuck was the defensive replacement?
I feel like one of the things I was most excited about Wak was the fact he understands that defensive replacements late in games is important, especially in safeco, and ESPECIALLY LEFT FUCKING FIELD. The knock on him was he wouldn’t pinch hit, and today he pinch hit and no defensive replacement. The routes he took on not only the ball in the 10th but the slicing ball away from him made him look like Raul. It’s not like Balentien’s bat is so amazing that replacing his bat with Chavez’s was going to make a difference.
God fucking damnit.
Zwakamatsu - June 6, 2009
I mean for christ's sake I learned when I was 8 years old that your first step is BACK.
Always. Doesn’t matter where the ball is hit. What did Balentien do on that last fly ball? Took a step in. Even in my intramural softball league guys get yelled at for not taking the first step back.
Zwakamatsu - June 6, 2009
Oh good, MLB.TV finally archived the game
Now I can see the Greek tragedy of Wlad with my own eyes.
Benne - June 6, 2009
Holy shit, that error was hilarious and pathetic at the same time.
I’ve seen Little Leaguers (and Ibanez) take cleaner routes to the ball.
Benne - June 6, 2009
First. Step. Back.
Zwakamatsu - June 6, 2009
Shouldn't you always play deep in the field anyway in that kind of high-leverage situation?
I mean, Gutz can get away with playing in, because he’s Gutz, but what the hell was Wlad thinking out there?
Benne - June 6, 2009
I absolutely agree, but really the fact he came in first makes him look like a dipshit.
Zwakamatsu - June 6, 2009
With a man on second, you're most concerned about preventing singles
so playing shallower helps accomplish that.
Jeff Sullivan - June 6, 2009
The fuckers that open this thread deserve to have their browsers crash
Poochie - June 6, 2009
Gifs don't crash browsers.
Tis an urban legend.
Big Jared - June 6, 2009
Bitch we got a pony its ok
Robert - June 6, 2009
Was Wlad given "credit" for the misplays of the balls in the outfield for his WPA?
Zwakamatsu - June 6, 2009
The second one
