This one's coming from Geoff Baker's Twitter. There's a sentence I could never go back in time and tell Jeff of ten year ago.
More in a bit.
Update: via Geoff Baker on Facebook (God this is weird), we're giving up RHP Justin Souza.

We got him for AA RHP Justin Souza apparently
gregrabble - July 11, 2009
Well....at least he's a good fielder at third.
Can’t hit worth shit though.
Meh.
Goose - July 11, 2009
ZiPS rest of season puts him at .310 wOBA going forward.
Obviously not world beating, but that beats the hell out of Chris Woodward.
Jack Moore - July 11, 2009
For sure.
My meh reaction is just this wasn’t how I figured we’d solve the 3B problem.
Goose - July 11, 2009
Either this isn't the final move (or Z doesn't plan on it being the final move)
Or it’s one of those “it doesn’t hurt us, so let’s give it a shot” moves that we can get away with even if we fall out of the race
calim - July 11, 2009
That's how I felt about Branyan and Gutz too and they turned out magnificent.
But then again I don’t know shit about baseball.
Fearless Frog - July 11, 2009

Fearless Frog - July 11, 2009
It makes sense
Getting a great third baseman doesn’t make sense, because then what do you do when Beltre comes back? This is a nice stopgap.
Jeff Nusser - July 11, 2009
My guess is
that we haven’t. This is just a move to make things a little better while the FO works on a more significant move. After all, it’s not like giving up Souza scuttles any hope of getting someone like Hardy or Brignac.
The Ancient Mariner - July 11, 2009
What this man says is wise
Jeff Nusser - July 11, 2009
And the same to you
(and to calim, for that matter)
The Ancient Mariner - July 11, 2009
Huh.
UZR likes him a lot. The bat looks pretty gross, though.
Teej - July 11, 2009
At least he's left handed. That's something I guess.
gregrabble - July 11, 2009
It's something.
Teej - July 11, 2009
He'll fit right in then
EnglishMariner - July 11, 2009 via mobile
Better option than Woodward, I assume?
calim - July 11, 2009
One of countless
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
It seems like the answer to that would clearly be yes
gregrabble - July 11, 2009
Can this guy hit 5 run Hr's?
M'sin.. - July 11, 2009
So you're saying we traded with Oakland?
That’s unusual.
Two Rs and Two Ls - July 11, 2009
How is this guy not having success?
Doesn’t swing at stuff out of the zone. Doesn’t make a lot of contact on the stuff he does swing at out of the zone. Makes good contact on zone pitches. 17% line drive rate. .ISOD .085. BABIP .268.
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 11, 2009
From Statcorner
LD% 20(!). Sees over 4 pitcher per at bat in the minors and the majors. Judging by his skill set stats, he looks like he should be having more success than this.
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 11, 2009
Hits a lot of ground balls
That’s about the only really negative thing that pops out to my untrained eye
calim - July 11, 2009
Good defender with a good knowledge of the strike zone.
Yep, sounds like Jack’s kinda guy.
Goose - July 11, 2009
Maybe he is not having success, because Oakland's team is horrible this year.
M'sin.. - July 11, 2009
That would have nothing to do with him getting hits
gregrabble - July 11, 2009
Of course it would.
M'sin.. - July 11, 2009
That's why Adrian Gonzalez is having such a shitty year.
Teej - July 11, 2009
But it's an exception for that team.
M'sin.. - July 11, 2009
Ah, OK
Gonzalez is immune to the effects of chemistry. What a badass.
calim - July 11, 2009
Because the other hitters are untalented.
Teej - July 11, 2009
Like the Gatorade was poisoned or something?
Teej - July 11, 2009
Maybe, the team just rubbed off on him.
M'sin.. - July 11, 2009
Bad chemistry in Oakland
Jeff Nusser - July 11, 2009
That's called Bukkake, by the way
russak - July 11, 2009
ZING!
EnglishMariner - July 11, 2009
I think you meant SPLURT!
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 11, 2009
I wish I could rec this a million times.
joof - July 11, 2009
Looks like he's been in AAA for the last two weeks or so
calim - July 11, 2009
Huh. Ok then.
abender20 - July 11, 2009
I have never heard of the guy we traded to Oakland, so I'm gonna assume he's a non prospect.
Right?
Goose - July 11, 2009
Who is Souza?
Nothing too valuable, I presume?
Teej - July 11, 2009
Nothing to worry about.
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 11, 2009
Souza's mostly a bullpen arm but he's made some spot starts.
Decent K rate, pretty good walk rate. Nothing amazing.
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 11, 2009
Need....more....bp arms.
russak - July 11, 2009
Don't worry
There’s another draft next year.
calim - July 11, 2009
Well, if we was really on our radar.
He’d have been up with us. Souza is one of those arms that everybody has a ton of in the minors. No loss.
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 11, 2009
Souza couldn't stay, he's not a color
Our bullpen follows the rules of “Reservoir Dogs”. You can’t stick in the bullpen if your last name isn’t a color. Mr. White, Mr. Kelley, etc.
LauraBu - July 11, 2009
Or a part of the body. M(a)rrow, Putz, etc.
CapSea - July 11, 2009
I just read that on FaceBook
Crazy.
section331 - July 11, 2009
Let's get the jokes out of the way.
I wonder if fate hannahan’d in allowing us to get this guy.
Yes? No?
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 11, 2009
I'll give it a yes.
Teej - July 11, 2009
Irish dude?
M'sin.. - July 11, 2009
Great, he's gonna bobble every ball.
russak - July 11, 2009
Irish huh?
Cool. We have an excuse to play The Water Jug again.
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 11, 2009
With Langerhans and Shelton, starting to look like a box of Lucky Charms around here.
LauraBu - July 11, 2009
Langerhans is Irish?
Sounds German.
Mariner John - July 12, 2009
He's a red-headed Viking
LauraBu - July 12, 2009
Looks like he's unlikely to have two full years of service time after this season.
So he’s under control for five years after 2009, if I’m doing it right.
Teej - July 11, 2009
He's also 29
Just because we have years of control doesn’t mean we’re going to use them.
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
Absolutely.
Just saying, if he turns into an average-ish hitter with a great glove, he’s ours for cheap. If he doesn’t, he can go away.
Teej - July 11, 2009
First impression is great move...
A major league third basemen from what I can tell… and we give up a bullpen arm from AA. Considering we just dumped Yuni for two young arms, this deal looks even cooler.
If Z isn’t done and is still looking for a shortstop, then all of a sudden our starting nine isn’t looking all that bad.
AtomicGarden - July 11, 2009
*Except for Griffey
At least he has an ok OBP.
AtomicGarden - July 11, 2009
Have fun with Hannahmontanahan
I’m sure not going to miss him.
muffinpryde - July 11, 2009
It all depends on your expectations
All we’re expecting is “better than Chris Woodward,” and he can probably manage that.
The Ancient Mariner - July 11, 2009
Chris who?
Good point, forgot that Beltre was out.
muffinpryde - July 11, 2009
He's about 100x better than what we had previously, so we will!
AtomicGarden - July 11, 2009
I vote Yes on this nickname.
okdan - July 11, 2009
Ditto.
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 11, 2009
A little too long for my tastes
OlSalty - July 11, 2009
AN has also just called him Miley
muffinpryde - July 11, 2009
That's much better
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
Of course now this means we have to top it
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
Achy Breaky Jr?
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 11, 2009
That is among the worst suggestions I have ever heard in my life
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
Hell, I liked the Hannahmontanahans nickname, so what do I know from funny?
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 11, 2009
Hannahan Solo?
Langerhans & Hannahan…. Hans and Han?
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 11, 2009
Nice.
gregrabble - July 11, 2009
The Naturalist?
OlSalty - July 11, 2009
Billy Ray Spawn
CapSea - July 11, 2009
did we just get a second cedeno/johnson?
w00tah - July 11, 2009
Hannahan looks to be about a 1-1.5 WAR
Compare that to Cedeno (assuming at least a little regression) with around -.05 to 0, and Johnson a bit below 0.
I’m new to using stats and thinking for myself, but combing through Fangraph’s page, he seems to be an improvement of about a win. Basically a decent stop gap if Beltre doesn’t come back this season, or until he does.
Although most of Hannahan’s value comes from his defense, his bat has a bit of potential to improve.
AtomicGarden - July 11, 2009
1 to 1.5 WAR over a full season maybe.
For this season, we’re only going to get half of that. Still, a solid pickup while Adrian’s gone.
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 11, 2009
Right, should have clarified that.
AtomicGarden - July 11, 2009
Based on Hannahan's ZiPS projected .310 wOBA for the rest of the season and his stellar UZR numbers
He’s roughly equivalent to what Adrian Beltre would give us for the rest of the season (ZiPS projected .325 wOBA and similar UZR), or perhaps ~5 runs less than Beltre or the rest of the season.
JLC - July 11, 2009
Oh, and he's a lefty
Okay, I’m starting to really like this trade more.
JLC - July 11, 2009
I can't imagine that Hannahan is a .310 bat
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
Our lineup is going to be stacked with lefties now
Crazy.
Fuckmikereilly - July 11, 2009
Huh, I didn't even notice Hannahan was a lefty.
Neat.
Goose - July 11, 2009
Neat
Goodbye Woodward, we knew you more than we wanted to.
OlSalty - July 11, 2009
He probably stays
and Josh Wilson goes away. But not our starting third baseman!
Fuckmikereilly - July 11, 2009
Well yes but we'll hardly ever see him and that's what I like
OlSalty - July 11, 2009
Which is cool.
Woodward’s a fine sub for this team.
Teej - July 11, 2009
He seems awfully slow, though. Can he be a respectable pinch runner? Maybe I'm misjudging this, though.
Decatur - July 11, 2009
Woodward's passable as a fifth infielder
But not having him in the lineup everyday is going to be nice.
calim - July 11, 2009
UZR/150 at 3B: 14.2
Not a huge sample there, of course, but still — seems safe to say he brings pretty good leather at the hot corner.
The Ancient Mariner - July 11, 2009
All in all
say he’s somewhere around +5 with the glove the rest of the way and matches the .690 OPS ZIPS projects for him (.310 wOBA), he’ll be a useful player under the current circumstances.
The Ancient Mariner - July 11, 2009
My God, I really didn't realize how stupid some of Geoff Baker's commenters are.
gregrabble - July 11, 2009
You probably should have by now.
I mean, it’s not like this is new or anything. They’ve been at stupid for… well a year now.
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 11, 2009
I can't read through those things.
The lack of grammar just kills me. Either the blog is populated by 15 year olds (probable), or people that struggle with proper English.
AtomicGarden - July 11, 2009
I resent your comment about 15 year olds.
muffinpryde - July 11, 2009
We should probably link to threads like those when we tell new people here why it's important to spell properly
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
I've never checked the comments there after a trade before.
gregrabble - July 11, 2009
I can guarantee you they're just as bad the rest of the time. =)
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 11, 2009
Hahaha. I see you were having problem with a guy named Nelson.
No one likes him because he talks about how much knows about baseball and how good of a pitcher he is. And how he ball on the same team as Tui.
russak - July 11, 2009
I think he may be mentally retarded
gregrabble - July 11, 2009
I think he may actually just be 12 years old.
AtomicGarden - July 11, 2009
He's probably 30, living in his momma's basement
And eating Hot Pockets like the rest of us.
LauraBu - July 11, 2009
Yay a mom's basement comment!
those are so great we need so many more!!!!!!!!
seattlebruin - July 11, 2009
And more exclamation points too!!!!!!!!!!
LauraBu - July 12, 2009
I have read like 5 comments and found out he thinks ERA is not only important, but is in fact the only important stat when it comes to pitching.
Mentally retarded is probably too nice for the guy. Arguing intelligent points with the people who comment there is futile.
Zwakamatsu - July 11, 2009
It entertained me for a bit, but that's why I stopped
He also think batting average tells you everything about a hitter and no other statistics matter. “you guys can go ahead and say what a great move, but this is pathetic, we are 4.5 games out, we need to make a run at it, if you think otherwise, then i wish you all the worst lucky in life”
gregrabble - July 11, 2009
It makes me cringe so hard to read those comments. I guess this blog and USSM have spoiled me.
Zwakamatsu - July 11, 2009
Yeah. When I think about it, I was probably just a significantly less retarded version of Nelson before I came to LL
I didn’t really know anything about evaluating players
gregrabble - July 11, 2009
I was going to say 2 years ago I would probably side more with Nelson than with you in the argument.
It’s funny because the only reason I read USSM for the first time was because so many people on the internet hated it so bad for “bashing” and “hating” the M’s and I wanted to figure out why a M’s fan site would hate the Mariners. Now I just have further affirmation that pretty much all mainstream media (news, analysis, music, movies etc.) sucks balls, and 95% of people live with their heads in their asses.
Zwakamatsu - July 11, 2009
I concur.
That’s actually pretty close to my story of finding LL as well.
Big Seahawk Loser - July 11, 2009
Come on out of hiding Nelson Cruz!
Nelson B — an obvious alias. Inability to spell — enormous ape-like hands on a tiny keyboard. Bad advice for Mariners — good for Texas Rangers. Aha!
LauraBu - July 12, 2009
I try avoid reading that blog
But sometimes I get sucked in – it’s like the Real Housewives of New Jersey.
Peenerson - July 11, 2009
You should definitely read the blog.
Just avoid the comments. Like pretty much every blog on Earth.
Teej - July 11, 2009
Pretty much every blog on Earth
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
Except this one!
OlSalty - July 11, 2009
LL is a huge outlier.
Teej - July 11, 2009
The blog itself is fine
Geoff provides a lot of great stuff, and some… well, not so agreeable material. But it’s just the comments you can’t get too sucked into.
AtomicGarden - July 11, 2009
You're saying it's it's superficial and uses fake breasts to make it self feel batter.
russak - July 11, 2009
Do fake breasts improve your hitting?
I thought that only worked outside of baseball.
LauraBu - July 11, 2009
I've also learned today that Geoff Baker likes the Decemberists.
qrsouther - July 11, 2009
I learned today that Geoff Baker likes Mexican Food
But that’s ’cause I spied him Saturday at La Carta de Oaxaca. Mucho cerveza on the table by the way.
LauraBu - July 12, 2009
I like not only that we got an upgrade from our current 3B,
but that we got him for a AA pitcher. The eloquence of trading a black hole for a AA and a A arm, and then trading away a different and worse AA arm for something useful is just great. Z’s moves just make too much god damn sense and I’m not sure if I can handle it.
Zwakamatsu - July 11, 2009
Hey, worth a shot.
Especially for Aardsma-Fodder.
ThundaPC - July 11, 2009
Career vs. Felix
Hannahan vs Felix – 6 for 12 with 2 HR, both in Safeco.
This move on multiple levels, is intended to get Felix the 2009 Cy Young Award
Mariner Optimist - July 11, 2009
You're living up to your screen name for sure.
Big Seahawk Loser - July 11, 2009
I would've preferred not to give up Souza
But this is still a good trade, especially if Hannahan’s glove is real. Losing Souza pretty much eliminates our last upper-level starting pitching prospect, though that’s not saying much.
JLC - July 11, 2009
WHAT IN SAM HILL IS GOING ON
