but I still don’t think it makes a difference. You’re not required to go back to the bag on a tag-up, it just leaves the force-out in effect at your original base. In this situation, the force was on until he touched second and once the ball dropped, he had to be tagged to record the out, as far as I would assume the rule to be
We appreciate Washburn's success a lot. A lot. But we don't delude ourselves about the fact that the underlying numbers suggest that he's due to crash back to earth.
Matthew, I've got no problem admitting when I'm wrong,
but I’d love to see some numbers on innings pitched (both per game and overall), opponent scores, and the like. I’m not saying he’s an ace – I’m saying he’s been one of our more dependable pitchers. How much would public opinion differ if the poor bastard actually got run support when he pitched?
Essentially this would be basing opinion off him on W-L record
which we know is meaningless – instead a metric like tRA shows that based on his batted ball profile, he’s been ~average this season. It’s just that with our great defense, his fielding dependent stats look fantastic
The fallacy is caused by failing to acknowledge the ugly fact that we just haven’t have very good or reliable starting pitching. I mean, after Felix, what have you got? A lot of bullshit, that’s what.
By the way, credit to LoneStarBall for finding this
Rule 7.08(d) Comment: Runners need not “tag up” on a foul tip. They may steal on a foul tip. If a so-called tip is not caught, it becomes an ordinary foul. Runners then return to their bases.

However, if a following runner is put out on a force play, the force is removed and the runner must be tagged to be put out. The force is removed as soon as the runner touches the base to which he is forced to advance, and if he overslides or overruns the base, the runner must be tagged to be put out. However, if the forced runner, after touching the next base, retreats for any reason towards the base he had last occupied, the force play is reinstated, and he can again be put out if the defense tags the base to which he is forced;

but come on, the South really got screwed post-Civil War and it remains a sensitive subject to some. Please do not mock all those people by calling it a homophobic slur.
It’s a slightly more complicated version of an emulator that will play pretty much all old dos games perfectly. I bet you could get it to work with games you install even though I use DOS roms. If you download the program that fixes the sound (can’t remember the name right now) you get completely playable, full games.
After having played through the first two last week. Also have Full Throttle, Sam and Max, and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis to get me through the rest of the summer
Type-C ish, but we probably won't even offer him arbitration anyway because he might accept and we're on the hook for 12 million a year with a crappy below average pitcher int 2010
You are aware that in some parts of the world people actually spell according to the rules of actual English
Are you so fucking retarded that you’ve been around LL for months without picking up on the fact that I’m not American? Considering your posting history I’m leaning towards ‘yes’.
To spell however we want. Sure, aluminium makes sense on the column, but it sounds silly. And why have a z if you never use it? The Kinks understood (read the back of their first album), and they’re as British as can be. The Beatles may have stolen the limelight, but The Kinks were the real trailblazers.
Surprisingly, not bad. He has some real spring in his step.
He’ll probably move to first in a couple years unless he can lose some weight and keep it off, though, but even guys that gain only muscle tend to lose range from that.
Postgame caller voted Rob for first half MVP because the pitchers are so much better this year than last.
Shannon helpfully pointed out that Rick Adair, John Wetteland and even Jason Phillips have something to do with both improved pitching and improved catching.

Wilder. - July 11, 2009
Shouldn't matter though, should it?
tootthekazoo - July 11, 2009
I think it should.
If a runner has to wait until the fielder touches to the ball to tag up, then until the ball hits the ground the force should still be in play.
Wilder. - July 11, 2009
Kind of confusing the way I wrote that (grammar not withstadning).
Wilder. - July 11, 2009
I get what you meant,

Yeah
looked like he touched the base with his right foot.
I have no idea how that works w/r/t the basepath, though
seattlebruin - July 11, 2009
That's exactly what I saw happen
Shouldn’t matter whether the ball was still in the air or not, correct?
tootthekazoo - July 11, 2009
Yeah, I think he touched the bag
The camera angle didn’t quite show it, but that would have been odd to pull up and not touch it when he was literally on top of it

but I’d love to see some numbers on innings pitched (both per game and overall), opponent scores, and the like. I’m not saying he’s an ace – I’m saying he’s been one of our more dependable pitchers. How much would public opinion differ if the poor bastard actually got run support when he pitched?
kevin_ess - July 11, 2009
BTW - this is regarding my Washburn post in the other thread...
kevin_ess - July 11, 2009
Essentially this would be basing opinion off him on W-L record
which we know is meaningless – instead a metric like tRA shows that based on his batted ball profile, he’s been ~average this season. It’s just that with our great defense, his fielding dependent stats look fantastic
seattlebruin - July 11, 2009
Here you go
http://www.statcorner.com/pitcherSP.php?id=132220&team=SEA&year=2009&leag=A_L
Matthew - July 11, 2009
So how does this make him worse than the other options we have (save for Felix)?
kevin_ess - July 11, 2009
How is that relevant?
He has not been good. That he was better than other people is not relevant in the slightest.
Matthew - July 11, 2009
See below in my response to Jeff.
If you have a house made of shit that happens to be standing fairly tall at the moment, why remove one of it’s walls?

Kirsten Schlewitz - July 11, 2009

Matthew - July 11, 2009
Because only two of the walls are shit, and a lot of the furniture inside is shit
So you swap one of the shit walls for some nice furniture and replace the wall with another shit wall that you already had
tootthekazoo - July 11, 2009
Being one of our more dependable pitchers over the last few years doesn't really make him good
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
This.
The fallacy is caused by failing to acknowledge the ugly fact that we just haven’t have very good or reliable starting pitching. I mean, after Felix, what have you got? A lot of bullshit, that’s what.
esoteric - July 11, 2009
Well I get that, but if we send him away we have even less.
Again, depending on what comes back to us.

Matthew - July 11, 2009

Rule 7.08(d) Comment: Runners need not “tag up” on a foul tip. They may steal on a foul tip. If a so-called tip is not caught, it becomes an ordinary foul. Runners then return to their bases.
(e) He fails to reach the next base before a fielder tags him or the base, after he has been forced to advance by reason of the batter becoming a runner. However, if a following runner is put out on a force play, the force is removed and the runner must be tagged to be put out. The force is removed as soon as the runner touches the base to which he is forced to advance, and if he overslides or overruns the base, the runner must be tagged to be put out. Indeed
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
FINISH IT BABY
gregrabble - July 11, 2009
Splitter?
If so, more of that please.
Susheel Ramasahayam - July 11, 2009
D.J. Putzma.
M'sin.. - July 11, 2009
Holy shit Langerhans played that PERFECTLY
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
Hmmm they just said that on tv
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 11, 2009
ARE YOU READING LL?
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 11, 2009
So that's where Jeff gets all of his analysis
tootthekazoo - July 11, 2009
And Loafie made a real lazy tag attempt
tootthekazoo - July 11, 2009
Why must you always give me a heart attack Aardsma?
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 11, 2009
SO CLOSE
gregrabble - July 11, 2009
God Lopez is so slow at making the turn to tag
tootthekazoo - July 11, 2009
No problem. No problem.
ThundaPC - July 11, 2009
Thank god for Safeco...
Slurvey - July 11, 2009
Yes, that homer would have killed us.

msb - July 11, 2009
Thanks Safeco
Happy Birthday!

Ahhhhhh, poo
Matthew - July 11, 2009
That was a dramatic double
JLC - July 11, 2009
Why risk it there down 3 runs?
gregrabble - July 11, 2009
He probably didn't expect Langerhans to play it that well
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
Okay, how about a piddling ground-out here?

Nelso Cruz is scary. I wish we had him

MFAN - July 11, 2009
I like the new blood.
cogs - July 11, 2009
Is Washburn still lucky or is he actually pretty good?
brian_sun - July 11, 2009
Unthinkably lucky
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
2.96 ERA. Must sell high, Jack.
brian_sun - July 11, 2009
Still lucky
gregrabble - July 11, 2009
Lucky.
Matthew - July 11, 2009
Better than last year, still really lucky.
Teej - July 11, 2009

Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009

JLC - July 11, 2009

Fin - July 11, 2009
Ew CERA. Ew.
Mariner Melee - July 11, 2009
Rob Johnson messed up Saltalamacchia's CERA.
ThundaPC - July 11, 2009
Thank goodness they dragged Rob's CERA into the postgame interview.
msb - July 11, 2009
Yeah I was refering to that. Ew.
Mariner Melee - July 11, 2009
CERA is such a digusting stat.
I hate that in a year where the broadcasters finally using stats like RZR and UZR, they are using CERA as well.
Mariner Melee - July 11, 2009
I will be behind homeplate tomorrow
Should I bring a snarky frowny Cedeno sign?
Omerta - July 11, 2009
Diamond club?
Fin - July 11, 2009
I dunno.
I was told behind homeplate so I’ll probably be in the second deck. Wont get to actually see the ticket until tomorrow.
Omerta - July 11, 2009
Probably 300's
mvjournal - July 11, 2009
Oh yes.
Mariner Melee - July 11, 2009
that, or a "don't hurt yourself, Bedard" sign
mvjournal - July 11, 2009
He might see it and get distracted and hurt himself
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
he might sneeze and hurt himself
mvjournal - July 11, 2009
I knew they wouldn't start Johnson in a day game after a night game but this seems a little extreme
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
Double sided sign with :Cedeno for bad ab/plays and Ce:Deno for good ab/plays
w00tah - July 11, 2009
I like this idea.
Omerta - July 11, 2009
One side sad, the other side the happy C:Deno one
so you can flip between them, commenting on his game as it goes.
msb - July 11, 2009
Late
gregrabble - July 11, 2009
No.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 11, 2009
How many CW's does Rob Johnson have?
M'sin.. - July 11, 2009
This better stand for Catcher Wins.
Nice.
Sinking Away - July 11, 2009
Yes, you are correct.
M'sin.. - July 11, 2009
Thank you Chuck Armstrong for not trading Jarrod Washburn last year, because he might actually get you more this year.
The team that loses on the Roy Holliday sweepstake might over pay for Washburn.
brian_sun - July 11, 2009
Man, maybe Chuck Armstrong knew that he would get more this year.
Which is why he nixed the deal.
Fin - July 11, 2009
He's a genius.
msb - July 11, 2009
I don't how to imagine a world in which this would happen.
Mariner Melee - July 11, 2009
You know how awesome Jack Z has been?
Imagine him with 12M more to play with.
Not trading Jarrod Washburn was stupid then, and it is just as stupid now.
Matthew - July 11, 2009
Irish Luck!
M'sin.. - July 11, 2009
Man, Washburn's ERA under 3. TRADE HIM
gregrabble - July 11, 2009
Johnson and Washburn package...
w00tah - July 11, 2009
He's going to be with us for the rest of the year.
And then sign with the Royals.
ThundaPC - July 11, 2009
Do we get 2 draft picks if that happens?
brian_sun - July 11, 2009
No.
But if he’s a Type B, we’ll get one pick.
Teej - July 11, 2009
But that's assuming we offer him arbitration.
Which probably won’t happen anyway.
Teej - July 11, 2009
Will Washburn be a Type A FA if we keep him through the season?
brian_sun - July 11, 2009
no
seattlebruin - July 11, 2009
No.
msb - July 11, 2009
Type-C ish, but we probably won't even offer him arbitration anyway because he might accept and we're on the hook for 12 million a year with a crappy below average pitcher int 2010
Decatur - July 11, 2009
I like the idea of packaging him and his catcher and getting rid of both of them by the deadline.
Sinking Away - July 11, 2009
Johnson is about 3/5 of our rotation's catcher now.
And to that I say, for one night, WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Decatur - July 11, 2009
Joh's caught 8 games, Rob 7 ...
msb - July 11, 2009

Yup.

Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009

SethGrandpa - July 11, 2009

Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
Yes, the defense is awesome, and can make a person crazy.
Go defense go.
Sinking Away - July 12, 2009
HOLY FUCK THIS IS GOOD AND WELCOME NEWS
Decatur - July 11, 2009
Jack Wilson sure has a lot of Web Gems
ThundaPC - July 11, 2009
Washburn better go to a good defensive team, because that's the difference between his last year's ERA and this year's ERA.
brian_sun - July 11, 2009
Jeff.
I somehow imagine that you’re happy to be wrong
Mariner Melee - July 11, 2009
Ranger Pitching!

Rangers pitching is good!
Don’t you know!?
Mariner Melee - July 11, 2009
How so?
brian_sun - July 11, 2009
We have one of the worst offenses in baseball.
Decatur - July 11, 2009
You haven't checked out San Diego's offense yet. At least we haven't been no-hit by a 5+ ERA pitcher who lost his starting spot.
brian_sun - July 11, 2009
It's too bad he didn't say "one of"
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
At least we have 3 above average offensive players in Ichi, Russell and Guti. Besides Gonzales, who else in the SD lineup is above average?
brian_sun - July 11, 2009
Hairston!
Oh wait…
Decatur - July 11, 2009
Our offense currently ranks 28th in baseball.
Matthew - July 11, 2009
We were by far the worst
Just a few weeks ago. Now if only we could get someone to fill in for Cedeno…
skywaker9 - July 11, 2009
I do not recall our offense ranking "by far" 30th any time recently.
Matthew - July 11, 2009
And yes, San Diego's offense is likely worse than ours.
Decatur - July 11, 2009
Nope! They're awful
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009

CLOSE OUT THE FIRST HALF WITH A BANG!
skywaker9 - July 11, 2009

Rob is more valuable.
M'sin.. - July 11, 2009
Washburn pitches pretty well
for being a below average AL starter
coolconman - July 11, 2009
I would say he pitches exactly like a below average AL starter
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
I disagree
He has a pretty good ERA
coolconman - July 11, 2009
And that means nothing
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
Well it means the other team doesn't score many runs when he pitches
Which tends to be a good thing for the Mariners
coolconman - July 11, 2009
WHAT
Decatur - July 11, 2009
Why are these comments just now appearing
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009

Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
Otherwise the horses are already out
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 11, 2009
You seem to have an outdated way of evaluating pitchers.
The other team not scoring many runs falls just as much, roughly, on the defense, as the pitcher.
Matthew - July 11, 2009
Way to completely ignore the defense playing behind him
JLC - July 11, 2009

Are you so fucking retarded that you’ve been around LL for months without picking up on the fact that I’m not American? Considering your posting history I’m leaning towards ‘yes’.
Graham MacAree - July 11, 2009
We won a war...
To spell however we want. Sure, aluminium makes sense on the column, but it sounds silly. And why have a z if you never use it? The Kinks understood (read the back of their first album), and they’re as British as can be. The Beatles may have stolen the limelight, but The Kinks were the real trailblazers.

Shark Bay has some colonies?
Graham MacAree - July 11, 2009

Which I learned because I had never heard of a stromatolite until you used it as an insult.
Decatur - July 11, 2009
You are correct
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 11, 2009
There are also a few more but they are remote and practically inaccessible
Shark Bay is pretty much the only place ordinary people can see them
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 11, 2009
That's what I get for not confirming with wikipedia before posting.

Teej - July 11, 2009
HEY I JUST MANAGED TO SAY PATRONISING WITHOUT SOUNDING LIKE A RETARD AND RESORTING TO USING A "Z".
EnglishMariner - July 12, 2009
he should probably give about 5M of salary to the defense.
brian_sun - July 11, 2009
It would be pretty awesome if he bought all the outfielders each a car or something.
Not that our outfield needs anymore wheels!
Decatur - July 11, 2009
Maybe KC will sign him to a 5 year 55M contract to provide veteran leadership to their club house.
brian_sun - July 11, 2009
Gil Meche was an amazing signing. Dayton Moore is damned good at scouting and projecting future performance (Callaspo, Soria, Meche, Bannister)
It’s just that he’s worse than blind when evaluating present value of players.
Decatur - July 11, 2009
I'm not even sure I believe this anymore
I’m starting to think he’s just been wildly lucky
seattlebruin - July 12, 2009
Kung fu Panda might be the best nickname in baseball. I love Pablo Sandoval.
brian_sun - July 11, 2009
See? Zito is still good for something
msb - July 11, 2009
Seriously, how are the Giants good?
I mean, having a guy pitch a No-No who was about to be demoted. They’re playing out of their minds.
skywaker9 - July 11, 2009
They have a dynamite pitching staff
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
Yup, I get that
Despite Zito.
skywaker9 - July 11, 2009
Their pitching staff is phenomenal.
And Pablo Sandoval is a good player.
Fuckmikereilly - July 11, 2009
Although they need another bat
If they are going to have any chance for the playoffs (probably not in any case because the Dodgers are so far ahead and the WC will be tough).
skywaker9 - July 11, 2009
Aaron Rowand is also underrated
But I’m surprised to see his defense has dropped off, according to UZR. Used to be great and still makes some good plays.
Fuckmikereilly - July 11, 2009
I wonder if he's a little timid
After hurting himself smashing into the wall with the Phillies.
skywaker9 - July 11, 2009
He's an aging centerfielder
that’s the whole reason why that contract was insane in the first place
seattlebruin - July 12, 2009
matt Cain is pretty good, and that local guy drafted after Morrow is currently probably the most valuable player after Pujols.
brian_sun - July 11, 2009
Ah Brandon
Enjoy Tacoma dude, I can’t believe we made a bobble-head of him.
skywaker9 - July 11, 2009
Next year's bobblehead schedual won't include him.
We can have Branyan (if re-signed), Ichiro, Guti, Aardsma and Felix for next year.
Mariner Melee - July 11, 2009

What are other players in MLB who have great nicknames?
Decatur - July 11, 2009
No matter how many you hear, nothing is going to beat Fat Ichiro
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
Was Fat Ichiro

Fuckmikereilly - July 11, 2009
I believe it was McCovey Chronicles
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
Yay! The Subway en espanol commercial is on again!
tootthekazoo - July 11, 2009
Oh man

Fuckmikereilly - July 11, 2009
Is he really 5'11"? They list him as 5'11" and 246 pounds.
brian_sun - July 11, 2009
I mean Kung fu panda.
brian_sun - July 11, 2009
Player height and weight numbers are astonishingly unreliable (they update them about once in a guy's career it seems like)
It might be something to ask McCovey Chronicles if you’re really interested, I guess.
Decatur - July 11, 2009
Jesus
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
That guy looks to have a pretty good defensvie range. what a nimble guy at 3B
brian_sun - July 11, 2009
Surprisingly, not bad. He has some real spring in his step.
He’ll probably move to first in a couple years unless he can lose some weight and keep it off, though, but even guys that gain only muscle tend to lose range from that.
Decatur - July 11, 2009
I like to think it was an NBC local news alert
just to show how fat he was.
Matthew - July 11, 2009
Billy Bush would call him gross
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
The Rangers really only had 2 hits tonight? Or did you just not update it?
M'sin.. - July 11, 2009
That's automated and I have nothing to do with it
They had five.
Jeff Sullivan - July 11, 2009
Yes you do Jeff, you have everything to do with it.
M'sin.. - July 11, 2009
When the numbers in the Mariner batting innings columnn read NEGATIVE one that one time, I thought that was you or M/G doing it at first.
Decatur - July 11, 2009
Which would have been brilliant.
Decatur - July 11, 2009
I think that's because the javascript run into a divide by 0 exception or something like that.
brian_sun - July 11, 2009
When you divide by zero, I'm fairly certain you don't get a negative number
seattlebruin - July 12, 2009
Accountability. It is all about accountability.
Baker told me as much. You need to learn some.
EnglishMariner - July 12, 2009
Postgame caller voted Rob for first half MVP because the pitchers are so much better this year than last.
Shannon helpfully pointed out that Rick Adair, John Wetteland and even Jason Phillips have something to do with both improved pitching and improved catching.
msb - July 11, 2009

gregrabble - July 11, 2009
