Please note that this is not a thread in which to discuss Mark Buehrle
Jeff Sullivan - July 23, 2009
HALMAN AND WASHBURN FOR BUEHRLE
craig3410 - July 23, 2009
DID YOU SEE THAT
Poochie - July 23, 2009
Yes. This thread is strictly for out-by-out updates on the Angels game.
Teej - July 23, 2009
Sorry I missed that
Below.
skywaker9 - July 23, 2009
That's odd. I didn't know Branyan knew how to suck.
Mariner Melee - July 23, 2009
Me neither.
kentcheesehead - July 23, 2009
We're the ones that usually do the sucking.
MFAN - July 23, 2009
Lower than Halladay! YES!
Fuckmikereilly - July 23, 2009
Looks like I missed a good game. I'm on the Wash train!
royalcurve - July 23, 2009
23-13 in 1 run games now
CMC_Stags - July 23, 2009
Also, 21 outs, only 3 Ks for Washburn.
So he had 18 outs in the field against only 2 hits? Is that correct?
Sounds sustainable to me.
CMC_Stags - July 23, 2009
GB/FB/LD of 4-11-4 on the day
Wonderful!
Jeff Sullivan - July 23, 2009
In the new Yankee Stadium
That would be a 3 HR day…
CMC_Stags - July 23, 2009
Sell now!
Fin - July 23, 2009
This is not the first time.
Washburn doesn’t get run support, doesn’t strike out any batters, and still shows all the shiny stats that get him noticed.
What is the statistical probability that somebody with a 4.5ish tRA who gets one of the lowest run support figures in the league not only finishes with a winning record, but does so with a top-15 ERA?
Strange things can happen over just 30 starts.
AnotherAaron - July 23, 2009
I couldn't believe it when it flashed up that the DA has only conceded one HR all year.
It seems that every ball in play is a fly ball or pop out. Long may this continue, and then come the off-season, get him traded to a dumb organisation for some prospects.
EnglishMariner - July 23, 2009
Nope
Let’s not let him go like Putz.
skywaker9 - July 23, 2009
Uhhhhhh
abender20 - July 23, 2009
I don't know
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
Yes I know that he sucks now
But the talent is still there.
skywaker9 - July 23, 2009
Have you noticed that we actually traded him for other players?
Lots of them? Several of them very useful? One of them is the second most valuable CF in the AL?
abender20 - July 23, 2009
Yes
It was a good deal, I’m just saying I don’t want to let DA go.
skywaker9 - July 23, 2009
Even if he were to be traded for someone better?
abender20 - July 23, 2009
Like whom?
Of course in that case. Find a stupid team and trade him if they give us value.
skywaker9 - July 23, 2009
Which is what I was saying 10 comments ago!
EnglishMariner - July 23, 2009
Clearly, but I was just walking us back to that point.
abender20 - July 23, 2009
Looping threads is only funny when it's ironic and intentional
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
It was intentional on one end.
abender20 - July 23, 2009
July 14th is Bastille Day.
abender20 - July 23, 2009
June 14 is Flag Day
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
Noooooooooooooo
seattlesundevil - July 23, 2009
Now I'm confused.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 23, 2009
More like Fag Day amirite
Phil Hatzenbuehler - July 23, 2009
Hey it's almost like EM had this exact idea already!
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
This is a joke right?
Thank God for that.
Eyeball Kid - July 23, 2009
Right...
Although Putz sucking might have more to do with every single Met under-performing this year basically.
skywaker9 - July 23, 2009
Or the fact that he has been bad for almost two years
Aaron Campeau - July 23, 2009
I was about to say this
2007 tRA – 2.91 SwS% – 12.6
2008 tRA – 4.61 SwS% – 11.0
2009 tRA – 5.11 SwS% – 8.2
I’m still new to this but those numbers don’t look good to me.
Eyeball Kid - July 23, 2009
It's almost like there's a downward trend there!
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
Also there's supposed to be a link to J.J.'s
Statcorner page in that post somewhere.
Eyeball Kid - July 23, 2009
Can you guys imagine how amazing Wash would be pitching in the NL?
If he can do this in the AL, he has to be up there with Dan Haren for best pitcher in the league.
abender20 - July 23, 2009
Jerk
Poochie - July 23, 2009
His WHIP is just that good.
abender20 - July 23, 2009
Or if I were feeling more like sb, "is the derivative of acceleration, yes."
abender20 - July 23, 2009
It's the integral, not the derivative.
Rollo Tomasi - July 23, 2009
Wait I'm completely wrong.
I’m fired.
Rollo Tomasi - July 23, 2009
Fire yourself at a rapid velocity.
abender20 - July 23, 2009
Hey if it was rapid enough he could theoretically see his mistake in time to not make it
Einstein for Dummies is a helluva book
Kermit. - July 23, 2009
That's a good point. Good luck finding a functional DeLorean, though.
abender20 - July 23, 2009
Out of a cannon
into the sun.
Rollo Tomasi - July 23, 2009
11.9 km/s is going to hurt
abender20 - July 23, 2009
It's the sudden acceleration, not the velocity, that will hurt.
Eyebrows - July 23, 2009
That's the best part about escape velocity from a cannon.
abender20 - July 23, 2009
I always thought it was the deceleration on impact that would hurt.
LauraBu - July 23, 2009
I think he would need a good outfield behind him, regardless of what league he is in.
For example, Raul might screw him over in Philly.
Fin - July 23, 2009
But, he's the third best in fielding!
For Left Fielders…
…
In the national league.
Robert Lintott - July 23, 2009
He's actually still got a positive UZR this season somehow
he’s going earn all $33M of that contract in one fell swoop
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
His UZR/150 though is -0.4 though according to Fangraphs
But yeah, you’re definitely right.
Though he is 37th in MLB in UZR/150, 31 in UZR, and 39 in RngR. So by a very basic, non-position adjusted measure, he should not be a starting OF in the majors (assuming 30 teams and 3 starting OF/team).
Robert Lintott - July 23, 2009
I hope the Phillies scout at the game was suitably impressed.
Spoomeister - July 23, 2009
The Phillies OF defense is really good
it will help Washburn look a lot better
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
We make too many errors to really help Wash out.
abender20 - July 23, 2009
As long as no one ever pulls the ball
Poochie - July 23, 2009
Even with IbaƱez?
Fin - July 23, 2009
ESPECIALLY with Ibanez
abender20 - July 23, 2009
I didn't realize that seattlebruin's comment was sarcasm.
Fin - July 23, 2009
(sarcasm)
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
Though with Werth and Victorino, they're actually not awful outside of Raul
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
I wonder if the Philly SBNation blog has caught on to his crappy defense yet.
Fin - July 23, 2009
I made a comment about once over there.
They called me a “bitter” M’s fan.
Craig Powers - July 23, 2009
All two of the posters there?
Faux - July 23, 2009
Well that's redundant.
Eyebrows - July 23, 2009
Like irritating Angels fan?
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 23, 2009
that was redundant.
Fin - July 23, 2009
So, how much of this improvement is defense
and how much of this is Washburn pitching better?
craig3410 - July 23, 2009
Probably like 80-20
Poochie - July 23, 2009
Crap
Can’t wait until the Cardinals sell the farm for him.
craig3410 - July 23, 2009
Well this seems like the right person to make this comment to
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
Hey, I'm a cards fan too
Oh well, better than the rumored Wallace-for-Holliday deal; at least I’ll still get to root for them
craig3410 - July 23, 2009
*if they go to the Mariners
craig3410 - July 23, 2009
I would prefer Wallace + somethings good for Halladay
but Wallace for Holliday looks ok to because he has no position and you get draft picks.
How would that work if the A’s finish in the bottom half?
Poochie - July 23, 2009
Supplemental and second rounder, right?
abender20 - July 23, 2009
Sounds correctish
Poochie - July 23, 2009
Plus I'm pretty sure the Cardinals are getting a sub .300 wOBA from LF
Poochie - July 23, 2009
Yeah, at second base.
abender20 - July 23, 2009
You have it backwards
Poochie - July 23, 2009
The Skipster is better offensively than I thought he was. .338!
abender20 - July 23, 2009
With slightly above average defense in left he'd be OK!
Poochie - July 23, 2009
Let's see how he performs as a ROOGY!
abender20 - July 23, 2009
He is a great hitter for a pitcher!
abender20 - July 23, 2009
So would our current leftfielder
Poochie - July 23, 2009
Washburn for a sexy shortstop, please.
I Lick Squirrels - July 23, 2009
Does Guti have a brother?
Fin - July 23, 2009
Booti
Phil Hatzenbuehler - July 23, 2009
Fruti
kevin_ess - July 23, 2009
No, that makes too much sense.
Fin - July 23, 2009
As I often never do.
kevin_ess - July 23, 2009
Wash's OBA is down .70
To .275 from .345, that’s your difference right there.
skywaker9 - July 23, 2009
It's luck!
and defense!
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
A lot of luck
The knack our pitchers have for getting out of jams this season is amazing.
skywaker9 - July 23, 2009
Actually I don't find Ryan Langerhans that attractive
lemonverbena - July 23, 2009
That sounds like it's your problem
Jeff Sullivan - July 23, 2009
He looks to me like he wears a black t-shirt of his favourite thrash metal band under his uniform
pakipaki - July 23, 2009
Maybe it's the cowboy hats in that wedding photo somebody posted
but I doubt it. I think he’s wearing a pop country t-shirt under the uniform.
marc w - July 23, 2009
He's got that too-tight facelift perpetual look of surprise thing going.
LauraBu - July 23, 2009
Wow you are picky.
Fin - July 23, 2009
Doesn't mean I think he's ugly!
Beauty is directly proportional to fielding, pitching, and batting skills far as I’m concerned.
LauraBu - July 23, 2009
You forgot throwing arm and baserunning.
Fin - July 23, 2009
Only 5 out in the AL West
And 4.5 in the Wild Card, yay!
skywaker9 - July 23, 2009
Unbelievable
Poochie - July 23, 2009
Losing the West but winning the WC would be something else.
sammy - July 23, 2009
Something else that isn't very bloody likely to happen.
abender20 - July 23, 2009
Serious question
How do you think the media would react if Washburn were traded for something that helps us right now, and would that reaction change Zdurencik’s standing with the FO? I’m thinking that trading Washburn wouldn’t be worth it if it creates a shitstorm that could get Z fired if the team stumbles on field in the next year and a half.
Poochie - July 23, 2009
I think the ownership is going to give Z more rope than that
The media would hate it, but I think Howard/Lincoln have realized they’re not that smart when it comes to baseball decisions.
appleshampoo - July 23, 2009
One would pray that Howard/Lincoln and Chuck/Armstrong knew better, but it's hard to know.
abender20 - July 23, 2009
I trust Jack/Zdurencik.
Fin - July 23, 2009
He hired Don/Wakamatsu, that makes him golden in my book
gregrabble - July 23, 2009
Whoops a doodle
appleshampoo - July 23, 2009
I don't think trading one starter headed to free agency could possibly result in a shitstorm warranting Z's termination
lemonverbena - July 23, 2009
I don't think there would be a problem apart from dumb fans.
The media are bitches and Z has tremendous good will right now.
EnglishMariner - July 23, 2009
I have no idea his standing because I don't work the FO
I’m legitimately curious, and it should be considered
Poochie - July 23, 2009
Did you see what they did to DePodesta in LA?
I think it’s definitely a concern. If the right deal comes up, you take it of course, but this has to be in Z’s mind.
I just wish we knew how much rope Armstrong/Lincoln are willing to give him. Probably plenty, but the trade-Washburn-then-suck scenario would use up quite a bit.
marc w - July 23, 2009
Which is why I hypothesize it would not be worth while
Poochie - July 23, 2009
Yes, I read your comment up there!
It is thought provoking.
I think it depends on what you get. At this point, trading him to cut salary and/or get a B- prospect may not be worth it. More than that and I think he’d have enough cover even if everything blew up.
marc w - July 23, 2009
A lot of that had to do with the media in LA hating him.
The media in Seattle seems to like Zduriencik a lot.
Aaron Campeau - July 23, 2009
Yeah but if he does something to royally piss them off they might hate him too
Poochie - July 23, 2009
I don't disagree, but Baker and Stone are probably the most visible M's writers
and both of them seem to acknowledge that he knows what he is doing and have said that they are okay with moving Washburn/Bedard even if they aren’t exactly in favor of it.
Aaron Campeau - July 23, 2009
The media in Seattle LOVES Jarrod Washburn.
marc w - July 23, 2009
To expand on that
Yes, it would take a confluence of several bad things for the media to just jump on GMZ – the move would have to backfire and the M’s would have to fall out of the race quickly, and probably some players would have to grumble about what the move did to morale. But all of that is possible…
marc w - July 23, 2009
At this point, you're almost better off holding on to him just because of this
unless someone really stupidly just blows you away with an offer
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
I think it is likely that someone will make such an offer.
Aaron Campeau - July 23, 2009
Jimmy Rollins!
Poochie - July 23, 2009
Well that'd be cool.
marc w - July 23, 2009
I think you'd need a name brand player in return, assuming this is the case
Poochie - July 23, 2009
Maybe in order to not piss off the idiots, but that shouldn't be a concern.
Aaron Campeau - July 23, 2009
I'm saying to escape overly harsh criticism
Poochie - July 23, 2009
I understand what you mean but I have faith in Zduriencik to manage risk and make informed decisions.
Aaron Campeau - July 23, 2009
I still would rather trade Bedard before he blows up
Poochie - July 23, 2009
Bedard may have value beyond this season.
Washburn does not.
Aaron Campeau - July 23, 2009
And Bedard's value is not even near it's peak
while Washburn’s is higher than any peak we could have ever imagined.
Fuckmikereilly - July 23, 2009
It's irrelevant if it's at his peak
His peak has likely passed
Poochie - July 23, 2009
He has been healthy before.
It’s not out of the question he could put up another 2007 if we sign him to a one year deal.
Fuckmikereilly - July 23, 2009
You can always resign him(?)
Poochie - July 23, 2009
The odds of that happening seem exceptionally low if he is moved.
Aaron Campeau - July 23, 2009
Hopefully they get over it
If the player is good (which he should be, if we’re trading Wash away), then they’ll soon forget. Kind of like with Putz.
Fuckmikereilly - July 23, 2009
This is what it would take to trade Washburn
there is no reason to unless we’re getting an awesome return.
Fuckmikereilly - July 23, 2009
It is possible, but I don't think it is likely and it shouldn't prevent the team from making a move.
Aaron Campeau - July 23, 2009
I don't blame them
he’s very candid and honest with them and seems to make their jobs a lot easier. It helps that he’s gotten good results all season, too
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
Exactly. I actually love his interviews these days.
He’s refreshingly candid and aware of his own shortcomings (more so than many sportswriters/fans).
marc w - July 23, 2009
More like Plaschke hating him
bluemax - July 23, 2009
Wasn't some of the storm over DePo caused by his poor relationship with the media?
msb - July 23, 2009
I would just look to 2006-2008 to prove that his success isn't sustainable.
Fin - July 23, 2009
All depends on the return
I think even the FO was planning a rebuilding year under Z. And I think they’re still committed to letting him see how he could rebuild the team given free reign. If he nets something of value going forward, I don’t think they’ll be upset, especially after things like the Putz deal.
Fuckmikereilly - July 23, 2009
Second Serious Question
Which helps more
Bedard regularly giving us 4+ inning starts?
or bedard working out of the bullpen?
Poochie - July 23, 2009
I have to assume A
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
I would lean that way too, but I am unsure
Poochie - July 23, 2009
As am I, I'm simply assuming that more innings of a good pitcher is better than fewer, higher leverage innings
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
JJ was pretty popular right?
Goose - July 23, 2009
Yup, and plenty of people hated the trade.
Aaron Campeau - July 23, 2009
I didn't really like the trade either
then I saw Franklin Gutierrez play center field and all was instantly forgiven
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
I think the (major) media would handle it fine
However, it is very obviously not a move that Z could afford to make if he weren’t getting much in return. Unless the M’s drop out of this, selling Washburn would almost certainly have to be accompanied by another move that adds to the roster.
Jeff Sullivan - July 23, 2009
Thank you.
You’re a super gal.
Poochie - July 23, 2009
I can't believe they'd fire him after one 'mistake' (their invevitable words, not mine)
While letting Bavasi go on and on like he did.
Besides, if the return for Wash works out well then they’ll forget about him soon enough and maybe realise that RRS is doing pretty the same thing.
Eyeball Kid - July 23, 2009
The problem may be that Armstrong/Lincoln
took no end of shit for giving Bavasi as long as they gave him. They may not be willing to do that again.
marc w - July 23, 2009
But Z has already made many more good moves
and has turned the team around in less than a year. They’re not going to ignore that because of Bavasi’s failures.
Fuckmikereilly - July 23, 2009
The problem is that we don't know that.
abender20 - July 23, 2009
They ignored it in LA
But DePo was hated to begin with
Poochie - July 23, 2009
Have you ever heard sports talk radio?
He got the team into contention and then he pulled the plug because he doesn’t care about winning. He thinks this is all about looking smart and not about winning championships! He just wants HIS guys out there, and doesn’t care about chemistry or what’s good for the organization!
marc w - July 23, 2009
Some people are going to think that, sure.
The only sports talk radio I listen to is Brock and Salk, but I’d say an equal number of their callers on the issue have said they would be okay with moving Washburn or Bedard because they feel like Zduriencik knows what he is doing.
Aaron Campeau - July 23, 2009
People are fickle!
I think the odds of a trade like this really hurting his standing are like 1/10 or 1/20, but, y’know, they’re not 1/1000000.
marc w - July 23, 2009
If you can make the team better you have to take those odds.
And I should point out that I am not in favor of moving Washburn because you can.
Aaron Campeau - July 23, 2009
Here, here!
If nothing else he gives us depth a (gasp) morale
Poochie - July 23, 2009
Hear, hear?
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
And to bring up another point
let’s say Zduriencik decides not to move Wasburn, he regresses and the M’s fall out of it. The biggest gripe you hear from casual fans is that the Mariners have a history of being indecisive at the trade deadline. If they are close to where they are in the race a week from now and the above scenario occurs, those same revisionist morons are likely to pile on him for continuing what they see as a trend of fence-sitting.
When things don’t work out as well as they think they should, uninformed fans bitch and they usually blame the people at the top. I’d say the odds are just as good that keeping Washburn backfires as trading him, so the best thing to do is weigh the risks and proceed as though what the fan base thinks is irrelevant in this particular situation.
Aaron Campeau - July 23, 2009
A great point, ac
I just think casual fans believe in Washburn and would deflect blame for the collapse away from him. Whereas if they collapsed just after a trade, people would point to the trade as the causal factor. That’s crap, of course, but I think we underestimate how popular Washburn’s become.
marc w - July 23, 2009
I know he is popular, but like I said, you've got to take risk into account and roll the dice sometimes.
I’m not saying that I will be disappointed if he isn’t moved, I just trust Zduriencik to make the correct decision re: public perception.
Aaron Campeau - July 23, 2009
Salk just asked how do you go into the clubhouse and say "we're selling"?
msb - July 23, 2009
You don't.
Aaron Campeau - July 23, 2009
Sports talk radio is the lowest form of fandom
Regardless of how little the FO knows, I think they’ll take their cue from the media and the fans. And most of them have faith in Z at the point. It could evaporate a bit if Wash is traded and we tank, but it’s not going to be the tipping point or anything. And I have faith that if he’s trading Wash, he’s at least trying to make us better in the future.
Fuckmikereilly - July 23, 2009
There is a touching belief in all the callers today that the M's are destined for post-season play this year.
msb - July 23, 2009
You don't trade pitching in the middle of a pennet race, you need a big bat , and to send a message to the rest of the division, you need Matt Holliday"
msb - July 23, 2009
Roy would be a much bigger get
Poochie - July 23, 2009
Oh, a caller already proposed that.
it was later referenced by a caller who thought while it would be good to have three Cy Young candidates in the rotation ….
msb - July 23, 2009
We tried that...
abender20 - July 23, 2009
FIVE ACES!
Eyebrows - July 23, 2009
The Mariners don't have the players necessary to get Roy Halladay.
And even if he is the best pitcher on the planet, I’m grateful for it. We can’t mortgage the farm on another “ace” for a year and a half before he signs a $150 million dollar contract with the Red Sox.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 23, 2009
They actually might have the players
but I don’t think we’d enjoy the cost
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
They could probably get him for Aumont, Morrow, Clement, Halman, and Saunders.
Of course if that happened, I would probably fly into a violent rage and burn down Safeco.
I Lick Squirrels - July 23, 2009
-Clement +Moore
Aaron Campeau - July 23, 2009
They could probably get him straight up for one player on the ML team
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
I would imagine so, yes.
abender20 - July 23, 2009
You forgot Triunfel.
Slurvey - July 23, 2009
If your message is "we're retards" then sure
Fuckmikereilly - July 23, 2009
From Rany on the Royals
seattlebruin - July 23, 2009
Jesus, I feel so sorry for Royals fans.
EnglishMariner - July 23, 2009
Goddammit
keep front page posts on topic or you will be castrated
Bearskin Rugburn - July 23, 2009
Trade trade trade.
Slurvey - July 23, 2009
Is this 710 caller on speed or something?
gregrabble - July 23, 2009
Because we were all listening to 710 at that exact moment and therefore know exactly what you are talking about.
abender20 - July 23, 2009
Anyone who heard it will know what I'm talking about, I would think
He was on for a good 5 minutes
gregrabble - July 23, 2009
Really wow I shall go back in time in order to try and figure out who you mean
Graham MacAree - July 23, 2009
I highly doubt you have the ability to travel through time
gregrabble - July 23, 2009
Everyone has the ability to travel through time
Graham MacAree - July 23, 2009
And here I've been moving forward through time like a lazy bastard all these years
pdb - July 23, 2009
I clearly meant backwards
gregrabble - July 23, 2009
And I clearly meant that I do indeed possess astonishing superpowers
Graham MacAree - July 23, 2009
I thought you were just being sarcastic
gregrabble - July 23, 2009
And here I was thinking you were too dense to understand me rather than being too juvenile to figure out why you got this response
Graham MacAree - July 23, 2009
Neither
I understand why I got the response, but was it that ridiculous to think that there would be other people listening to 710 at the time I posted it? I didn’t know any better ways to describe the guy, so I was just make an observation.
gregrabble - July 23, 2009

gregrabble - July 23, 2009
Continuing this exchange enriches the site

Bearskin Rugburn - July 23, 2009
Am I just supposed to not respond? If so just tell me and I'll note it, but that seemed like something I needed to at least respond to
gregrabble - July 23, 2009
Yes, it would be best to let it go.
Aaron Campeau - July 23, 2009
Alright than.
gregrabble - July 23, 2009
In the future, if something happens on the radio that relates to the topic at hand, recount the story.
Otherwise, it’s akin to walking into a meeting at work and saying “I just saw a person in the elevator.” then walking out.
abender20 - July 23, 2009
Duly noted
gregrabble - July 23, 2009
Try the offtopic next time.
Also try to tell us what the meth head said that might have been strange.
Sec 108 - July 23, 2009
He was stuttering a lot, and talking extremely fast
gregrabble - July 23, 2009
So he sounded like Dave Cameron?
Sec 108 - July 23, 2009
I don't know, I've never heard Dave Cameron talk
gregrabble - July 23, 2009
It's a joke. Dave talks fast, but does not stutter.
Sec 108 - July 23, 2009
So he sounded like Jeff Sullivan?
Robert - July 24, 2009
It wouldn't be an issue if you were to give a brief explanation.
Aaron Campeau - July 23, 2009
In other words please don't post comments like that because they are of extremely limited value
pdb - July 23, 2009
is what someone with a heart of gold would say.
abender20 - July 23, 2009
A heart of gold, while valuable to others,
would seem to not be a very good quality to strive for personally. I mean, I know gold is one of the more pliable elements, but I do not think it would make a good compression simply from electrical shocks.
Matthew - July 23, 2009
It's hypoallergenic, so there's that.
abender20 - July 23, 2009
Gee, it sure seems like a silly thing to say then doesn't it?
abender20 - July 23, 2009
Washburn on the trade rumors
Larry Stone
Goose - July 23, 2009
The Wash interviews, I half expected him to say something like:
“I’ve been overachieving and the team has good pitching depth. If they can trade me for a useful replacement, that would be lovely.”
abender20 - July 23, 2009
The way Wash interviews
abender20 - July 23, 2009
Shutup Jarrod. Just shutup. I'm starting to actually respect and like you.
I hope something happens the next 10 days or whatever. Either gettting us within 2-3 games of first or dropping us 7-8 back. This 4-5 game stuff is making it difficult to decide what to do with guys like Washburn.
I still say deal him if the prospect or prospects are right, but I like this group of guys we got in the clubhouse right now, and I have to admit, I’d feel bad if this group starts getting broken up, although it’s probably best in the long term
Rudy4three - July 23, 2009
His interviews have been quite honest recently
I enjoyed the part where he calls bullshit on players who say they don’t pay attention to trade rumors.
Fuckmikereilly - July 23, 2009
Has he said
“I’m much happier now throwing to Rob Johnson with an incredible outfield defense to bail me out instead of throwing to Kenji and having Raul watch fly balls drop for doubles?”
CMC_Stags - July 23, 2009
He's admitted sometimes that he's been lucky.
Fuckmikereilly - July 23, 2009
It's easy to admit you are lucky when you have $40,000,000 in the bank.
EnglishMariner - July 23, 2009
Seems amazingly difficult for most athletes to admit.
marc w - July 23, 2009
He's always been honest and upfront.
ThundaPC - July 23, 2009
So if Washburn keeps up his current pace for 75 or so more innings this year
He will have accumulated enough WAR during the past 4 years to actually earn his contract. Who would have thought.
Manzanillos Cup - July 23, 2009
Idiots probably
Matthew - July 23, 2009
Where's the process/results pic?
Bearskin Rugburn - July 23, 2009
Yatzee
Bearskin Rugburn - July 23, 2009
Although I'm pretty sure fangraphs uses FIP for pitcher value stuff
which is quite a bit kinder to Washburn than tRA.
Manzanillos Cup - July 23, 2009
Actually, I don't know if this is true or not.
Looks like Fangraphs uses an RA version of FIP. Also, I don’t know which metric makes him look better over the years, but this year his FIP is well above average and he’s just below average in tRA.
Manzanillos Cup - July 23, 2009
Why would the Phillies want Washburn?
Come on, have some common sense. Why would the Phillies want an extreme flyball pitcher like Washburn pitching in their little bandbox? 9 flyouts to start the game? His ERA would double to Jamie Moyer level if he pitches in Phillies.
brian_sun - July 23, 2009
This page might answer your question.
Here
Sec 108 - July 23, 2009
The Phillies aren't the smartest organization in baseball and Washburn is a veteran with playoff experience and a shiny ERA.
Plus he probably would be an upgrade for them.
MFAN - July 23, 2009
Happ is pitching great, we know about Cole Hamels, and he's awesome,
They just signed Pedro, and Moyer is going to stay in the rotation because of his contract and local ties. I am sorry, but Washburn isn’t a upgrade to the Phillies.
brian_sun - July 23, 2009
Only 2 or 3 of the Phillies starters are league average or better. Pedro is too much of a wild card right now he can be great or suck.
Slurvey - July 23, 2009
I don't think anyone here is saying Washburn is going to Philadelphia.
Nobody cares where Washburn goes, as long as he returns something of interest. Philly just so happens to be doing their homework on Washburn, hence the talk around here.
Wilder. - July 23, 2009
You just cited Pedro Martinez and Jamie Moyer as reason they don't need Moyer? How do you expect to be taken
seriously?
Rudy4three - July 23, 2009
*need Washburn
Rudy4three - July 23, 2009
Phillies might not be the smartest organization in baseball,
but the are the defending WS champ and have one of the best farm systems in baseball. I would love the Mariners to be in their shoes.
brian_sun - July 23, 2009
The Phillies would want Washburn because we are smarter than they are
Jeff Sullivan - July 23, 2009
Is Jarrod Washburn's 1.06 WHIP sustainable?
He’s leading the whole AL in WHIP now. How the heck is that possible? He’s only given up 31 extra base hits in 126 IP. That’s pretty awesome for a flyball pitcher.
brian_sun - July 23, 2009
This is how.
WHIP is a stat the relies on defense. It’s not a very good way to analyze a pitcher. Plus a flyball pitcher will have a lower WHIP in general.
Eyebrows - July 23, 2009
Oh shit guys image size sorry.
Rookie mistake, I’ll go get my coffee now.
Eyebrows - July 23, 2009
I like this picture though.
Fin - July 23, 2009
I think I speak for many when I say we will forgive you this time.
What a face.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 24, 2009
Another tool that helps WHIP.
MFAN - July 23, 2009
So damn sexy.
SethGrandpa - July 23, 2009
i'd do him.
i would.
jose luis - July 23, 2009
I have not read a single commment.
Nor have I watched the game. I am probably LLLJing a bit, but I just got drunk with my dad and hoped to see 51-44 upon my refresh of LL. I am happy and satisfied. Go M’s! :)
We won and I had a great day. Hooray for the M’s! :D

Zwakamatsu - July 23, 2009
He actually registered a swinging strike on it today!
Maybe more than one…haven’t checked.
appleshampoo - July 23, 2009
By Miguel Cabrera no less!
Bearskin Rugburn - July 23, 2009
We should send Washburn some Captain Morgan
He’s our captain and we’re all on his ship. Sorry Felix, you’re too young to be a Captain!
OceanBird - July 23, 2009
I am pleased by the fact that we are 7 games over .500!
Fearless Frog - July 23, 2009
Wahsburn should be annointed a knight in Felix's court and granted an exension on his super fucking-I'll-fuck-you-and-make-it-hurt-powers.
kevin_ess - July 23, 2009
He throws balls full of semen and hate.
He might have eaten toxic spillage from the Sound that has made him angry. You won’t like him when he’s angry.
kevin_ess - July 23, 2009
What does he turn into when he's angry?
A dolphin, or a GREEN dolphin?
OceanBird - July 23, 2009
An angry HUGE dolphin.
kevin_ess - July 23, 2009
Green is pretty redundant for thewaters he's in.

Sec 108 - July 24, 2009
Reading gets in the way of me saying whatever I goddamn well want to whenever I goddamn well feel like it!
pdb - July 24, 2009
This time, no.
Kirsten Schlewitz - July 24, 2009
I know you're upset, and I'm not trying to start anything, but I'm curious.
I’ve always kind of wondered how is the result of an Angels game, and hence our standing in the division, not “on-topic” when discussing our game result of the day? Is it just discussing specific plays that irks you? Because if, say, Nathan had gotten the final out and I’d simply posted “Sweet Angels lose. Only 4.5 back!” that would’ve surely been on-topic.
SethGrandpa - July 23, 2009
Posting about a result is fine
Posting about something happening during the game is not because it encourages further game thread-style conversation.
Also I’M FUCKING MAD
Jeff Sullivan - July 23, 2009
Can we post them in the game thread? Since it's....a game thread?
Goose - July 23, 2009
Yeah all this stuff belongs in the game threads
That’s why they’re there.
Jeff Sullivan - July 23, 2009
Aye boss.
Goose - July 23, 2009
Thank you
Jeff Sullivan - July 23, 2009
Well in that case, the Angels just fucking won
gregrabble - July 23, 2009
AGAINST JOE FUCKING NATHAN!
Slurvey - July 23, 2009
If Joe Nathan cannot complete a fucking 2 run save against them, I don't see how the fuck they're ever going to fucking lose
Fuck
gregrabble - July 23, 2009
They've won back-to-back with 5% or less chance to win the game.
But it feels like about 15 in a row.
SethGrandpa - July 23, 2009
Let's stop now.
Slurvey - July 23, 2009
FUCKEDY FUCK FUCK.
SethGrandpa - July 23, 2009
I understand not wanting constant updates, after yesterday
I think simply stating the outcome and maybe a brief summary of frustrations about how the Angels never lose would be more appropriate? Or maybe it should just all go in the game threads. Up to Jeff.
Fuckmikereilly - July 23, 2009
Danger! High Voltage by Electric Six would be a great song for David Aardsma to come out to
Dewey N - July 23, 2009
Only 4.5 out of the wildcard!!!!
Optimism
SethGrandpa - July 23, 2009
I don't even understand how we are closer to that
Jeff Sullivan - July 23, 2009
Boston got swept by the Texas Rangers.
Slurvey - July 23, 2009
Wait the Rangers swept the Sox?!
Slurvey - July 23, 2009
Yes that was a thing that happened.
Eyebrows - July 23, 2009
I know the Angels are flawed and getting incredibly lucky...
But I’m really starting to think we have a better shot at the wild card. I mean Boston is clearly not great (unless they swing something for Halladay) and the Rangers are due to fade. The Rays scare me, but I think we might just have a shot.
SethGrandpa - July 23, 2009
Boston is very, very, very good
Jeff Sullivan - July 23, 2009
Ha ha...yeah...I'm just in denial because we worked the Rangers and they worked Boston.
I’m dumb like that.
SethGrandpa - July 23, 2009
The Red Sox are bound to make moves
and they’re fucking good as is. Our top of the rotation and our defense is the only thing that comes close to them.
Fuckmikereilly - July 23, 2009
I know I'm contradicting almost all evidence I always use to seperate smart fans from dumb fans, but...
I dunno. I just don’t get a feeling with Boston that they’re as good as all indicators say they should be. I thought the entire year (ok…excluding games 3-5 of the series with the Yanks) that Boston would win it the last two times they did, but I don’t get the same vibe.
SethGrandpa - July 23, 2009
In my gut I feel better about beating Boston than the Angels
but that’s just because recently Boston has been sliding and the Angels have been…whatever.
Fuckmikereilly - July 23, 2009
Their offense is only above-average and their defense is bad
but the pitching staff is phenomenal from top to bottom. Our only WC hope is that the AL East beats up on itself.
Jeff Sullivan - July 23, 2009
You hear that, Rays?
Go make a trade. Just keep Scott Kazmir away from the Angels.
Eyebrows - July 23, 2009
Also simple math
We are chasing two teams in the division. We are chasing three teams in the WC. There are no teams realistically chasing us in the division. There are a couple Central teams in the WC.
calim - July 24, 2009
That's the spirit.
M'sin.. - July 23, 2009
Was Nick Adenhart sacrified to provide the Angels 7 more years of good luck?
ThundaPC - July 23, 2009
Yes.
I think that was established that last night.
SethGrandpa - July 23, 2009
I'm beginning to think it's an Angels in the Outfield scenario
Fucking Christopher Lloyd.
Fuckmikereilly - July 23, 2009
Worst mainstream propaganda film of all-time.
I’m working on a piece that proves such.
SethGrandpa - July 23, 2009
Propaganda for what?
The mainstream?
Decatur - July 23, 2009
Pro-Angels.
Who clearly are a team that has made a pact with Satan. When I said mainstream was meaning that it was maliciously marketed as a family movie, when it was really more “Triumph of the Will” than “Lion King.”
SethGrandpa - July 23, 2009
Plus it teaches kids that God likes to help you cheat.
Eyebrows - July 23, 2009
I say go back and watch the original, which featured the Pirates
No pact there.
