I’ve been hearing for a few days that the M’s were involved as a third team in a Cliff Lee to Tampa Bay deal. The Indians want more pitching than the Rays want to give up and don’t have a use for Brignac (because we already gave them an awesome LH hitting SS…), so the M’s would get Brignac and send additional pitching to the Rays.
What that looks like is up in the air. I’ve heard Morrow/Clement to Cleveland in a huge deal that also sends Victor Martinez to Tampa. I’ve heard that we’d absorb Kazmir’s contract too in order to make TB be able to fit Lee into their budget. I’ve heard smaller deals where it’s just Morrow.
His contract and Washburn’s are nearly identical this year. The M’s would probably then move him for the best prospect they could get, and the salaries would come out even for this year.
So, basically, the rumor (and it’s still that for now) is that the M’s would turn Washburn/Morrow/Maybe Clement into Brignac/Kazmir/Prospect.
Is Kazmir still busted, or is he on the path to fixed since being sent down and called back up?
A 6.23 tRA (5.52 tRA*) in 2009 that earns $8M in 2010 and $12M in 2011 is hard to get excited about, but is there anything in his peripherals that implies bad luck? Dave’s article from May doesn’t seem that promising. Has there been a significant change in his profile since then? Or does WOO BRIGNAC override any concerns about Kazmir?
but at this point, he might really need to get out of this organization if he’s going to succeed. I’d rather have him than Kazmir, given Kazmir’s contract, but we can afford the latter, and I’d be happy to see us take the risk on him in order to get Brignac, if all we’re giving up otherwise is Clement.
What I don’t see, in the versions of this deal floating around, is how this makes sense for the Indians. Maybe they’re still wrangling over what pitcher(s) TB will give Cleveland, because Morrow/Clement just doesn’t carry the freight as a straight-up return for Lee.
The great thing about Lee going to the Rays is it leaves Washburn the second most eligible bachelor on the trading block. The Phillies have pretty much come out and sad that if they can’t get one of Lee/Halladay it’s Jarrod city for them, and if we pick up Kazmir then anything at all we can get back for Washburn is just super. Come on Amaro, you need a veteran dolphin.
Hey that point is really excellent, moving Kazmir and at the same time increasing the value/immediacy of Washburn
There’s without doubt a better way to structure that sentence, but all the player movement today is pushing my giddy button and your angle on the situation just gave it another push . Yahoooo!
So the Jays' demands for Halladay have been rejected by Philly
as of this morning and Amaro has already said that if not Halladay his team is interested in Lee, Bedard and Washburn. Also, they seem to be totally willing to part with Carrasco.
Pulling a player for lack of effort only to put him in a few hours later just doesn’t make sense. If he’s actually in the lineup, this has gotta be it.
Wakamatsu said that they have another move to announce, but they’ll do it after the game because they don’t want to bother anybody on the team with it. Probably just to announce that Vargas will be starting tomorrow, and the corresponding roster move to get him up here
Though I wonder who they'll move to get Vargas back up here
Bullpen is already kinda thin, so I figure it would be a position player of some sort. We don’t really have anybody we can easily move aside for him, do we?
Stupid Griffey and Sweeney, making our roster semi-immobile. I was figuring him to be the only one really able to be moved, but what a waste having to send him back to Tacoma
By the way, for those of you asking about Reed Brignac, the Class AAA shortstop prospect from the Rays, being lifted in today’s Durham game, my Florida contact just told me his leg was bothering him and that he is expected to play Game 2 of tonight’s day-night doubleheader. We’re aware of the trade rumors, yes, and have been looking into them all morning. But for now, nothing appears imminent.
Sweet Jesus.

ThundaPC - July 25, 2009
Okay, so I'll toss this out now
I’ve been hearing for a few days that the M’s were involved as a third team in a Cliff Lee to Tampa Bay deal. The Indians want more pitching than the Rays want to give up and don’t have a use for Brignac (because we already gave them an awesome LH hitting SS…), so the M’s would get Brignac and send additional pitching to the Rays.

Guess we’ll see.
davidcameron - July 25, 2009
whoa
gilmeche55 - July 25, 2009
Oh, how will we ever absorb Kazmir's contract AND take on Brignac?
Whatever shall we do?!
Wilder. - July 25, 2009
Washburn would almost certainly go away quickly
His contract and Washburn’s are nearly identical this year. The M’s would probably then move him for the best prospect they could get, and the salaries would come out even for this year.
So, basically, the rumor (and it’s still that for now) is that the M’s would turn Washburn/Morrow/Maybe Clement into Brignac/Kazmir/Prospect.
Yeah, I’d be happy with that.
davidcameron - July 25, 2009
Washburn would go to Tampa Bay in this scenario?
If that is the case, wouldn’t Bedard be more likely?
Wilder. - July 25, 2009
Washburn would go somewhere else in a separate transaction
Jeff Sullivan - July 25, 2009
Ah, I see now.
Wilder. - July 25, 2009
There has to be a version where we end up with Martinez
Poochie - July 25, 2009
Why not just ask for Carlos Santana while you're dreaming?
abender20 - July 25, 2009
If I were dreaming a different washed up centerfielder would be our DH
Poochie - July 25, 2009
Maybe we can pass one Dutchie for another
abender20 - July 25, 2009
Seems to good to be true, doesn't it?
lemonverbena - July 25, 2009
wait wait wait....
So we’d be giving up Clement and Morrow for Brignac? Or are we also getting Kazmir?
ManifestDestiny - July 25, 2009
If we end up with Kazmir that would excite me.
I have a hard time believing he’s really a replacement level pitcher.
Aaron Campeau - July 25, 2009
So we would get Brignac and Kazmir for Morrow and Clement, that would be an amazing deal.
CstSnow - July 25, 2009
I’m no Mariners fan, but yeah, I’d say that’s definite win for you guys.
I don’t see why we would want Clement though.
westbrook - July 25, 2009
As someone who also follows the Dodgers
that stings, a lot.
bluemax - July 25, 2009
Clement's kind of a Victor Martinez type of catcher
that is, more of a DH.
Bearskin Rugburn - July 25, 2009
Clement can't shred either.
I Lick Squirrels - July 25, 2009
Holy shit.

Jeff Sullivan - July 25, 2009

Eyebrows - July 25, 2009

JY - July 25, 2009

I wonder if we can get the Mets to ever trade with us again.

You know, we could use a good hitting 3rd baseman after this season.

It's a common reaction to comments of a humorous nature.
abender20 - July 25, 2009
It was a funny comment, to say the least.
But I was laugh unexplainably loud at the time. Maybe I was just in a funny frame of mind.
JLProck - July 25, 2009
Is Kazmir still busted, or is he on the path to fixed since being sent down and called back up?

pmc47 - July 25, 2009
Would like to know where his velocity is? I would like to see what Adair could do with him
as long as there isn’t some underlying physical issue with Kazmir.
Rudy4three - July 25, 2009
His velocity is up last two starts
Hit 95 in each of his last two starts. He’s still a massive risk, but it’s something.
davidcameron - July 25, 2009
The M's seem down on Morrow, I think they'd take that risk as long as it bring back the
SS they desire.
Rudy4three - July 25, 2009
I'm not sure they're *down* on Morrow
but at this point, he might really need to get out of this organization if he’s going to succeed. I’d rather have him than Kazmir, given Kazmir’s contract, but we can afford the latter, and I’d be happy to see us take the risk on him in order to get Brignac, if all we’re giving up otherwise is Clement.

The Ancient Mariner - July 26, 2009
On the Indians' side
We’re still supposed to get a pitcher from TB. And there’s still no assurance that Clement is part of the deal.
nickjs21 - July 26, 2009
As I said, "in the versions I've seen"
and I figured somebody like Wade Davis had to be heading Cleveland’s way for this to make any sense at all.
The Ancient Mariner - July 26, 2009
Woah!
JMKaustin - July 25, 2009
But doesn't Tampa have Navarro?
I don’t see why they need Hay is is Victor Martinez too.
Fin - July 25, 2009
Navarro has been bad this year, and they could always use the DH spot for Martinez
Rudy4three - July 25, 2009
And then Cleveland would be filled entirely with former Mariners.
marinerdan - July 25, 2009
No, That's KC
hcoguy - July 25, 2009
Well Valbuena, Choo, Asdrubal Cabrera and now maybe Morrow/Clement
is a decent haul too.
marinerdan - July 25, 2009
We should try to fill the entire AL Central with former M's.
We already have a start with Podsednik and Carlos Guillen/Ramon Santiago
JY - July 25, 2009
It says so much about each front office that KC is filled with shitty Mariner castoffs
and Cleveland wth quality Mariner prospects.
Bearskin Rugburn - July 25, 2009
rec!
westbrook - July 25, 2009
KC just needs to sign Sexson.
w00tah - July 25, 2009

Whatever.

It probably means less Batista, so who's going to complain?
abender20 - July 25, 2009

Jeff Sullivan - July 25, 2009
So the Jays' demands for Halladay have been rejected by Philly

Now, who/what will be our Nintendo 64?

Yamauchi approves of this comment
Bearskin Rugburn - July 25, 2009
Griffey is our Nintendo 64.
It was fucking sweet in 1997 and now it’s old, collecting dust, and the joystick doesn’t move so freely.
abender20 - July 25, 2009
Mario Kart is still the most fun I have playing video games
but I’ll admit I haven’t touched any of the consoles that have come out in the last three years
Bearskin Rugburn - July 25, 2009
There's medicines advertised all over TV that will help his joystick move more freely
tootthekazoo - July 25, 2009

George702 - July 25, 2009
There are many many reasons I do not want Halladay in Philly
Poochie - July 25, 2009
The sad thing for Toronto is that even if they can get 3 top prospects from Philly, they still will be screwed in the AL East.
abender20 - July 25, 2009
In the short trerm
Poochie - July 25, 2009
I wonder if Ricciardi wakes up every day hoping Vernon Wells will just retire.
abender20 - July 25, 2009

Poochie - July 25, 2009

abender20 - July 25, 2009
Too bad we don't have another bad contract to throw in
Poochie - July 25, 2009
Yes, what a miserable shame, that.
abender20 - July 25, 2009
Well it looks like its not happening
the consensus seems to be he’s not going anywhere. And if he does, I kinda hope he goes to Anaheim.
Bearskin Rugburn - July 25, 2009
Heyman still likes him going to Philly
Even after they turned down the offer. Then again Heyman can be a windbag.
nickjs21 - July 25, 2009
Heyman has been saying Philly all the way
and so he’ll never back off of it.
Fuckmikereilly - July 25, 2009
Windbag etc
nickjs21 - July 25, 2009
Pulled from the doubleheader today, I presume?
I was at the Durham game last night and he was playing.
FlaskInSafeco - July 25, 2009
Yes.
Although they waited an inning to pull him for not running out an infield fly.
That seems silly.
R.J. Anderson - July 25, 2009
I am skeptical.
Aaron Campeau - July 25, 2009
So am I.
The Bulls AGM didn’t give a reason for him being pulled either, simply said they expect him back in tonight’s lineup.
R.J. Anderson - July 25, 2009
The thought I would have given all of this (probably because I am a very depressed person)
is that the deal hit a snag and they had to backtrack.
Aaron Campeau - July 25, 2009
Nah I think this makes the most sense
Pulling a player for lack of effort only to put him in a few hours later just doesn’t make sense. If he’s actually in the lineup, this has gotta be it.
Fuckmikereilly - July 25, 2009
Um.
Uh-huh.
R.J. Anderson - July 25, 2009
The fuck?
Really?
Bearskin Rugburn - July 25, 2009
So we've gone from pulled for being lazy to pulled because of a slight injury?
BrianL - July 25, 2009
An injury that takes him out of a game, but let's him play three-four hours later.
Seems likely.
R.J. Anderson - July 25, 2009
Uh oh, must have a degenerative hip condition.
Must. Trade. Now. To. Seattle.
Wilder. - July 25, 2009
I'm going to laugh if he ends up traded to a non-Seattle team
Fuckmikereilly - July 25, 2009

FlaskInSafeco - July 25, 2009
Listening to the pregame on the radio right now

Stupid Griffey and Sweeney, making our roster semi-immobile. I was figuring him to be the only one really able to be moved, but what a waste having to send him back to Tacoma

I could be wrong but I don't know that we could send Shelton back without having him clear waivers
Jeff Sullivan - July 25, 2009
