51-46, Super Quick Thoughts

in Seattle Mariners Game Recaps
- Do you see now why Erik Bedard doesn't have very much trade value? He's kind of like Adrian Beltre, in that he obviously has the talent to be the best at his position, but short of one big year, he isn't able to put it all together. Bedard's still a good pitcher. Beltre's a good third baseman. But neither of them are great, and Bedard has less going for him than Adrian does. I just got the feeling today that Bedard was trying to strike everybody out, but his command wasn't anywhere close to being good enough, and that's why he got up to 81 pitches in three innings. A maddening and torturous start. Should we go on to trade Bedard, you're going to want to try to forget what we gave up to get him.
- I'm beginning to think that Chris Jakubauskas isn't very good.
- Michael Saunders pops out in his first at bat, strands five on the day, and has a home run in his debut taken back by no-name clown Chris Gimenez. Have fun sleeping tonight, Mike.
- The partial standing ovation he got before his first at bat was nice, though.
- Our playoff chances should now drop to about 1-2% or so, putting us in roughly the same position as the Reds and the Mets. We're toast.
I have you at 9%, even after the loss
vivaelpujols - July 25, 2009
Ditch reality! Refuse to lose!
M'sin.. - July 25, 2009
The nice thing is that we are close enough at the moment that the games are still entertaining without making my tummy hurt.
Aaron Campeau - July 25, 2009
Better than that, I think
is that Zduriencik has turned this team that almost top to bottom is one that is fun to root for and watch.
When, what, Miguel Batista? is the most hated person on our team, that is so far and above anything since 2003 that it’s refreshing even if we do tumble down and finish with around 78 wins or so.
Matthew - July 25, 2009
Absolutely.
Although I think there is a chance that the team post July (or August, depending on what happens with the waiver wire and so forth) 31 is better on true talent than the current team, which will only make the rest of the season that much more interesting.
Aaron Campeau - July 25, 2009
And now we get to celebrate Griffey's last season in the majors instead of secretly resenting him for hurting our playoff chances!
(I’m aware Griffey isn’t totally awful and possibly our best option, though it’s painfully obvious he’s no longer the Griffey of old, or even the Griffey of 2 years ago)
JLC - July 25, 2009
That has been the best part of this year for me.
Last two games being horrible and all, the 2009 Mariners have been fun to watch most days and that is refreshing. Too many times in recent years I have left the stadium wondering if there was a more boring team in baseball. That is no longer the case and I thank GMZ for that.
Sec 108 - July 26, 2009
"We're toast. "
Delicious, crispy toast, with butter and honey.
msb - July 25, 2009
No, toast with cheap margarine spread with trans fats that will kill you later that dropped spread down on some dog hair.
w00tah - July 25, 2009
I think of blackened toast that I made for myself as a kid
and still ate even when when the quotient of ash was getting awfully high. There was still some pleasure in it, whether it was good for me or not.
Just so, we still get to watch Felix, Ichiro, Franklin Gutierrez, Branyan, Aardsma and some others. At the beginning of the season I anticipated a .500 team at best. They’ve been much better and much more interesting than that.
ignacio - July 25, 2009
So we're rooting for Texas now, right?
JLC - July 25, 2009
Oakland
Jeff Sullivan - July 25, 2009
Works for me.
ThundaPC - July 25, 2009
I feel really bad for hosing them on the Hannahan trade now
JLC - July 25, 2009
Someone please make up a fake Brignac trade rumor update
I want to believe in something good and happy
JLC - July 25, 2009
Sorry dude, we had to pass on Brignac
Ricciardi sent us Halladay for Batista/Silva/Clement. Worst part about it is Halladay wanted a 4 year deal before he’d accept being traded to the M’s, but signed for below market value because it turns out his favorite Grannie lives in Seattle and he wanted to be close.
Kermit. - July 25, 2009
Wouldn't his only grandmother tecnically be his favorite?
JLC - July 25, 2009
What?!? He's down to his last Grannie? This is terrible, no wonder he wants to be close
Those old people can kick off at any moment
Kermit. - July 25, 2009
We're getting Hellickson!
Aaron Campeau - July 25, 2009
Hellickson and Beckham would be a wet dream to get.
w00tah - July 25, 2009
There'd be nothing wet about it. I'd be all out of moisture after crying tears of joy for several hours.
abender20 - July 25, 2009
On the postgame show they said that...
Morrow and Clement to CLE. Victor Martinez and Cliff Lee to Tampa. Brignac and Kazmir to Seattle.
David89 - July 25, 2009
Yarr...
Slurvey - July 25, 2009
really?
brian_sun - July 25, 2009
Done deal or just rumor?
brian_sun - July 25, 2009
Speculation.
Morrow seems like the RH version of Kazmir to me and Kazmir is just a harder throwing Erik Bedard so 2 times the headcase?
Slurvey - July 25, 2009
I'd be very happy with that.
gregrabble - July 25, 2009
Words could not describe my happiness if this trade comes true.
Heydude - July 25, 2009
Zduriencik gets all the women

Kermit. - July 25, 2009
You know, I love that we're winning as many games as we are this season
But I find myself hoping to finish in the bottom 15 in W-L record at this point
JLC - July 25, 2009
I want to lose every game for the rest of the season, save Felix starts.

He better have been traded and they lied.
w00tah - July 25, 2009
How can you trade a guy who's hurt every 2 starts? How the fuck can a guy like that have any trade value?
brian_sun - July 25, 2009
We are stuck with him till the end of the year, and hope he didn't fall enough so he can
still maintain his Type B FA status. We offer him arbitration, and sign him for 8M for 2010. The way his health has been the last 2 years, he can’t get any multi-year contract. So he might as well stick with Seattle for 1 more year and try to hit FA again in 2011.
brian_sun - July 25, 2009
You really want this train wreck back? 8M for 10-15 starts, half of which won't even get you into the 7th inning?
Rudy4three - July 25, 2009
Silva Jr.
w00tah - July 25, 2009
I wouldn't go that far.
M'sin.. - July 25, 2009
Yes, I want him back for 8M for 2010. He still has electric stuff.

Erik Bedard gets hurt often as is therefore a likely member of the female gender, unlike real men like Kerry Wood and Rich Harden, who have facial hair and large amounts of testosterone.
JLC - July 25, 2009
Hey, don't talk shit about my other favorite team, the Cubs. Kerry Wood pitched hurt in 08.
You want a real pussy, I give you a guy named Mark Prior.
brian_sun - July 25, 2009
Favorite by definition means most liked
You cannot have two favorite teams
JLC - July 25, 2009
Favorite National League team and favorite American League team.
M'sin.. - July 25, 2009
So who would you want to win the WS, should the two teams meet there?
JLC - July 25, 2009
Flip a coin. No, pick the team that is more of a favorite.
M'sin.. - July 25, 2009
"More of a favorite" is a nonsensical phrase
JLC - July 25, 2009
What about "The Red Sox are playing the Royals and the Phillies are playing the Nationals. Which is more of a favorite to win?"
joof - July 25, 2009
Technically, still nonsense
It should be “Which is the favorite to win?”
JLC - July 25, 2009
Even comparing the favorite-hoods of the Phillies and the Red Sox?
joof - July 25, 2009
Why? If you have a national league favorite team and likewise with the AL.
M'sin.. - July 25, 2009
You cannot be more than most
Most sets the upper limit, and a favorite team is your most liked team.
JLC - July 25, 2009
You have one favorite team in each league.
You have the Mariners and the Cubs. The Mariners are your favorite team in the American League and the Cubs are your favorite team in the National League. These two teams meet in the World Series. In this case, let’s say these are Peter’s two favorite teams(one being in the AL, the other the NL). Peter decides because he likes the Mariners more he is going to root for them in the World Series. Of the 2 teams that are in a separate league the Mariners are more of a favorite to Peter. They are favorites in each league, but the Mariners are a step higher.
M'sin.. - July 25, 2009
Boy, Peter really knows how to pick 'em
JLC - July 25, 2009
Yeah, he sure does.
M'sin.. - July 25, 2009
Probably the Cubs, since I grew up in Chicago rooting for them, and they haven't won one in 101 years.
brian_sun - July 25, 2009
That's more recently than the Mariners have won one.
Robert Lintott - July 25, 2009
Thats more recently then the Mariner's have won won.
M'sin.. - July 25, 2009
When did the M's franchise start?
brian_sun - July 25, 2009
1957
Robert - July 25, 2009

Kermit. - July 25, 2009

Who is rec'ing every post in this thread?
qrsouther - July 25, 2009
The best part is how you are serious
Aaron Campeau - July 25, 2009
Geoff Baker said he's a 7 inning horse. Please remind me how many times Erik Bedard has gone 7+ innings for the M's since last year?
brian_sun - July 25, 2009
Twice and barely I think.
w00tah - July 25, 2009
damn, Washburn has more 7+ inning games in his last 5 starts than Bedard has in 1.5 seasons.
brian_sun - July 25, 2009
Ratio of 7+ inning starts to overall games started
Washburn 2009: 10/19 = ~53%
Washburn 2008: 5/28 = ~18%
Washburn 2007: 8/32 = 25%
Washburn 2006: 8/31 = ~26%
Bedard 2009: 2/14 = ~14%
Bedard 2008: 4/15 = ~27%
Bedard 2007: 14/28 = 50%
Bedard 2006: 13/33 = ~39%
Yes, Bedard is injured more often and therefore makes less starts. Yes, he’s made very few starts for the Mariners. But Washburn is having a fantastic season this year due to luck and amazing outfield defense. If you compare Washburn’s 2009 to Bedard’s 2007, they’re almost identical.
Beyond that, Erik Bedard, when healthy, has made more 7+ inning starts per game than Washburn has the past 4 years.
JLC - July 25, 2009
Haselman wondered right after the game if there might be a problem, with the lack of control
msb - July 25, 2009

gregrabble - July 25, 2009
Can someone tell me why Geoff Baker have a man crush on Erik Bedard?
Last year, he was the one who supported the trade. This year, he’s throwing out theories like Erik Bedard could be a type A FA, Erik Bedard gives you 7 innings so you can rest your bullpen when he pitches… I just don’t get it. Do they come from the same family or something?
brian_sun - July 25, 2009
Drugs.
kentroyals5 - July 25, 2009
I think they are both Canadians. I have to check on that.
brian_sun - July 25, 2009
Yeah, that's true. and so is Phillipe Aumount. Maybe Bedard can be Aumount's mentor,
since they both came from the French speaking part of Canada.
brian_sun - July 25, 2009
So is Michael Saunders.
Maybe Saunders can teach Bedard how to not be such a fucking pussy.

It really isn't.
Mariner John - July 25, 2009
I can't tell are we boned?
Slurvey - July 25, 2009
This is what I think about all of this.
This idea of us being disappointed regarding the playoffs goes along with how we live in general. Though some people can live modestly, for the most part, people want more than they have. That is how we are programmed as consumers. Once we get the blackberry, now we want the iPhone. Once we have that, we need the new computer. etc. We want more than what we have. We drive a mid size sedan, and when we see the ferrari whiz by, while we might be wishing he gets pulled over, we also envy that guy’s car, and success, even if we won’t admit it. Once we have 1 million dollars, we don’t feel fine, we need 2 million, or 3 million dollars. Once we have a profitable business, we aren’t just content running it, we have to expand into new areas, be more profitable.
I could go on and on, and the point is, before the season, we would’ve been happy with the .500 team that the Mariners are, even some of the posters here say that. But still, we want the playoffs, competitive baseball this late in the season isn’t enough. Once we make playoffs, will we be happy? No, we will want to win the pennant, or the World Series. What happens when we win the World Series, will we be content? Sure, but we will probably soon want another one. So what I am getting at is this, I think we are just programmed to want more than we have, which is why we are unhappy with the M’s, or I call the team a joke before actually thinking about what I just said.
Fin - July 25, 2009
Very good point.
Although I think a lot of it is doing so much better then expected and seeing the Angels still do better. Being behind the Angels for so long makes the fact that we over-achieved and still got nowhere that much harder to swallow.
Slow Country - July 25, 2009
I think if you give us a week, we'll be able to deal with it.
But come on, we just got lit up by Cleveland and at the same time the Angels will NEVER LOSE.
I picked the M’s to have an 80-82 season this year. If we manage to win even 83, I have to consider that a successful season and look forward to probable contention in 2010… but right now, fuck the Angels. And Cleveland.
Two Rs and Two Ls - July 25, 2009
This certainly is a fact.
Fuck the Angels.
Slow Country - July 25, 2009
So who will be available free agents this winter?
Jaejo - July 25, 2009
Sex Cannon!
I Lick Squirrels - July 25, 2009
It feels weird...
but I don’t think I want them to resign Branyan at the cost he could command from a dumb GM… which is too bad, because I’ve really enjoyed watching Branyan all year.
At least there’s Gootz.
Two Rs and Two Ls - July 26, 2009
I thought he was on a 2 year deal...
hcoguy - July 26, 2009
You know what hurts even more than this?
Looking back at the 2000 ALCS, yep! So close…
Oh, yeah, but this doesn’t really hurt. I’m actually happy this happened, lets see who we can get.
OceanBird - July 25, 2009
Why yes I agree that the closest we ever came to a title hurts more than a season that we vastly over preformed.
Robert - July 26, 2009
Geoff Baker thinks that everyone except Ichiro and Felix is fair game for trade (yes, that includes Franklin Gutierrez)
Although I don’t agree with him on Guti, even with Saunders up now, and hopefully with Dustin Ackley in the system soon, and can be ready by 2011, I still wouldn’t make Guti available.
But hypothetically if Guti is made available, what can we get for him? He’s an elite player who’s making close to minimum. He’s the 12th most valuable player in all of baseball in terms of WAR.
Base on salary, you could argue that Guti could be worth as much as Roy Halladay. Let’s say Toronto offer Halladay + shipping 126M remaining on Vernon Wells contract to Seattle for Guti, would you do it?
brian_sun - July 26, 2009
hypothetically?
It would be an interesting trade. I don’t think I would do it… but I can see an argument for recieving a package like that. I think Guti would be more valuable to Safeco field.
Whoopetydoo - July 26, 2009
Giving up Gutz is the stupidest thing you could do, period
He’s a cornerstone player who will be one of the foundations of our team for years to come. I understand we want to acquire more of these types of players, but why would you possibly give up the one you’ve got?
Fuckmikereilly - July 26, 2009
Not me. It's Geoff Baker's opinion in his blog. I am just passing the message,
brian_sun - July 26, 2009
I wasn't calling you stupid
Sorry if I made that insinuation. I was calling Geoff Baker stupid (or whoever believes in trading Gutz). He could be had, of course, but no team will give us back a player of his value at a premium position.
Fuckmikereilly - July 26, 2009
If the Rays offer Tim Beckham and Wade Davis, I think I would do it. But since
they already have BJ Upton, I just don’t see it.
brian_sun - July 26, 2009
And that trade would maybe be worse than the Bedard one
Ties up our salary for years to come in a not good player and gives us a pitcher who could opt out after this season and become a free agent.
Fuckmikereilly - July 26, 2009
Nope, I said Toronto picks up the rest of Wells contract,
Wells is a horrible defender now with a below average bat. Toronto basically just gives him up for free. No one team will pick up his salary. Even the Royals aren’t that stupid.
brian_sun - July 26, 2009
Oh, your wording confused me
Still, Roy Halladay can opt out, and even having him next year is not worth a few years of Guti.
Fuckmikereilly - July 26, 2009
Why would Toronto give us Vernon Wells for free?
this makes no sense. None at all.
seattlebruin - July 27, 2009
Because we'll ask really, really nicely!
And we’ll throw in a couple Dick’s gift certificates.
pdb - July 27, 2009
Uh, sorry. Mr. pdb, but they DON'T HAVE DICKS RESTAURANTS IN TORONTO
so they would NEVER accept this proposal. GEEZ!
seattlebruin - July 27, 2009
I'm bad at this rosterbation thing
let’s say Tim Horton’s instead.
pdb - July 27, 2009
I almost said "they don't have dicks in Toronto," but this might have been taken the wrong way
mostly by Corco
seattlebruin - July 27, 2009
I think he simply forgot about Gutierrez
Rudy4three - July 26, 2009
Well, compared to Ichiro and Felix.
Gutz is fair game. That doesn’t mean he’s gonna get moved though.
ThundaPC - July 26, 2009
As Dave Cameron (I think) pointed out before, it would have been great to trade Bedard before the glass showed
Probably was impossible, since Bedard did go on the DL almost immediately afterwards, if memory serves. And he hasn’t shown himself very durable since coming back either. Jeez bummer.
At least Washburn’s still going strong.
If Z manages to trade Bedard he’s a genius.
Sam Regens - July 26, 2009
I'll really be glad to see the last of him.
Can’t stand fragile guys (especially those with great talent. Aggravating). No joke.
Sam Regens - July 26, 2009
no, it's impossible to trade Bedard now.
When even your top brass thinks you are hurt 6 days before the trading deadline, no one would take a chance on him. I say forget about this season, get him fixed up. Offer him arbitration. He still has electric stuff, and hopefully he comes back next year healthy and return to his 2007 form. If his market after this year is only a 1 year deal (based on his medical history these past 2 years, hard to see who would offer him multi-year contract,) then why not get him to sign a 1 year deal with Seattle? I still love his stuff and would hate to give up on him after 2 disappointing years.
brian_sun - July 26, 2009
If only he had signed that multi year deal...
then at least we could send him to the Nats or Royals
Whoopetydoo - July 26, 2009
Yes, what you wrote is probably the best course of action at this point.
But since I really don’t trust his durability, for me the best thing would be that we offer him arbitration but he takes a long term deal elsewhere (of course that is not in our power to control). We’ll see how it pans out.
Sam Regens - July 26, 2009
It depends on his FA status.
If he’s hurt and out for the year, he would not even maintain his Type B FA status. So if he takes a long term deal else where in that case, we get no compensation. If he’s not a type B FA, we would not offer him arbitration, because we get absolutely nothing if he signs else where.
If he could maintain his type B FA status, we should offer him arbitration. Then the trade became AJ, Tillman, Sherrill, Butler, Macklio for 2 injured prone years of Bedard + a second round sandwich pick or something like that.
brian_sun - July 26, 2009
If that sandwich pick turns out to be the next Albert Pujols
the trade would still be kinda questionable.
Fuckmikereilly - July 26, 2009
the trade would still be kind of questionable.
Fuckmikereilly - July 26, 2009
Albert Pujols was a 32nd round pick. So 2nd round is too high to draft him:) We'd probably draft a Steve Baron, another
all glove no bat catcher. We need to stack up those Rob Johnson type catchers in our system.
brian_sun - July 26, 2009
Pujols was drafted in the 13th round
in 1999.
gej - July 26, 2009
Better chance of praying he can put a month of starts together and maybe get something useful
if put through waivers
Rudy4three - July 26, 2009
This would be the cherry on top.
ESPN’s Jayson Stark reported on Saturday that the Angels have shown an interest in acquiring pitcher Roy Halladay from the Toronto Blue Jays before the non-waiver trade deadline on July 31st. Stark, in his report about the Phillies balking at Toronto’s proposal of Halladay for major leaguer J.A. Happ and minor league prospects Kyle Drabek and Dominic Brown, said that according to a source, Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi offered a similar proposal to the Angels and Dodgers, with both teams remaining “interested.”

Probably just posture in the Blue Jays part. The Angels supposedly offered
Jered Weaver and Brandon Wood to the Jays, and the Jays turned it down. I don’t really care whether Halladay is traded to the Angels this year, since we are not catching them anyways. But if the Jays raped the Angels farm system, I am all for it.
brian_sun - July 26, 2009
I don't really understand why they'd do that trade anyways
Jered Weaver isn’t a bad pitcher…and they need one. Sure Halladay is better, but they’re giving up a good young pitcher for a great older pitcher. I’d love it if they do the trade, because Anaheim could lose a lot of key pieces this off season.
OceanBird - July 26, 2009
Hmm, maybe they saw Roy Halladay's 59-30 record
against the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays, and think he’s the missing piece to get past those AL East teams in the playoff? They’ve lost 3 straight playoff series to the Red Sox already, and it wasn’t even close.
brian_sun - July 26, 2009
If Jered Weaver was the key piece in the Halladay trade, I would be unhappy
He isn’t bad, but they should have to give up more as a centerpiece (especially given the Drabeck/Happ rumors).
Fuckmikereilly - July 26, 2009
There's nothing left to rape
as we’ve been over ad nauseum. If the Angels get Halladay, they’re starting with Jered Weaver and Mike Napoli-ish, and that’s bad for them long-term if they don’t re-sign him
seattlebruin - July 27, 2009
Holy shit Chris Gimenez is white?
Mariner John - July 26, 2009
who is that?
brian_sun - July 26, 2009
Did you read the post?
Or watch the game? Or look at the box score?
Mariner John - July 26, 2009
The game was blacked out by FOX.
I googled him, but a 27 yo rookie 1B from the Indians with 46 career AB? Sorry, I am not an Indian fan.
brian_sun - July 26, 2009
Well his name is highlighted in teal in the post.
And he hit a home run today.
Mariner John - July 26, 2009
If I came off as a dick here I apologize.
Mariner John - July 26, 2009
Nope.
Matthew - July 26, 2009
Some fucking cunt who fucking robbed what would have been Michael Saunders' first major league HR.
I Lick Squirrels - July 26, 2009
shit, I did watch that high light in SC. but I didn't recall his name.
brian_sun - July 26, 2009
We're back to making Bedard-is-a-girl jokes?
Really? That just embarrasses everyone.
Jeff Sullivan - July 26, 2009
It wasn't me. I said I still love his electric stuff, and would still love to sign him for a 1 year deal in 2010.
brian_sun - July 26, 2009
It wasn't me either
Who else wasn’t it?
greymstreet - July 26, 2009
Just got done watching the highlights (if you can call them that) and holy hell Saunders looks lanky when he bats.
MFAN - July 26, 2009
I'm considerably annoyed that someone rec'd almost every comment in this thread for no reason.
CapSea - July 26, 2009
It's ruining the integrity of the system!
This will be known as the juiced era of Recs. Everyone who is implicated should have their SBN records thrown out (or atleast *’d)
DCMariner - July 26, 2009
Bahaha.
It’s not like a personal thing. It’s just pointless. The idea behind it is to know you brought something of value, either humor or otherwise. Reccing everyone’s post doesn’t actually do anything. “HAHAHAHA, I’m so funny! I gave everyone a number for no reason!!! HAHAHAHA”
CapSea - July 26, 2009
I am sure the Mods will be able to see who did it, and End them,
EnglishMariner - July 26, 2009
Capitalizing the word "End" is why I like this comment.
CapSea - July 26, 2009
Same here!
royalcurve - July 26, 2009
It's probably some kid that's trying to be funny
Robert - July 26, 2009
and failing miserably
Robert - July 26, 2009
It was funny that one time, but that was more a visual art piece than just random hit and run
Kermit. - July 26, 2009
Saunders almost hit a HR!
Optimism

Jak
So I must say that the story of Jak is a good one (older baller working hard, getting a shot in the bigs), and I’m glad he is a part of the 09 M’s. That being said, I think its time to move forward with developing our pen a bit more. Any word on Cordero and his recovery?
Having Saunders in the lineup is a clear sign Jack and Wak are preparing for a great season in ’10. They also seem to be doing a fine job overcoming the Bavasi blunder era, with huge monies being paid out to some of our favorite pretentenders, note the sarcasm please. I am anxious about future trades that may be in the works.
All in all, I am pleased with the M’s moves, clubhouse attitude and effort. I mean really, who thought we’d be over .500 at this point on April 1? Please don’t misconstrue my chatter as ‘giving up’ because that is not in me, but I do feel that mgmt has to consider other options than just winning ball games in the present. You just have to be prudent, that’s all.
And Beluga… Thanks for the laughs!
