As most of you know, Jeff Clement was pulled from Tacoma's game today in the 3rd inning after hitting a double in the first. It does not appear to be injury or sickness related per Divish. Knock yourselves out. Updates as available.
My thought is that it's either a trade or a callup and we won't find out which until Wednesday. Fun!
My first update is that Wakamatsu doesn't have a damn clue. Which probably lessens the likelihood of a callup.
Second update: He's gone. Clement is gone. We just don't know the return.

Commenters at both USSM and MLBTR are saying that we got Jed Lowrie from the Sox
Don’t find that at all believable, but whatever.
Humongo - July 28, 2009
USSM is broken.
Something must be happening.
JY - July 28, 2009
Or not.
msb - July 28, 2009
Huh.
I got the message the first time. Maybe it just took a while to load.
JY - July 28, 2009
That would be interesting
Graham MacAree - July 28, 2009
I think they were lying.
The rumor was Clement, Washburn, and Lowe for Lowrie. I think it’s made-up.
AtomicGarden - July 28, 2009
When Clement was pulled, Jarrod Washburn was pitching in the 4th inning. If he got traded at that
time, why would he continue to pitch till the end of 7th?
brian_sun - July 28, 2009
That's a typo
Jeffie has been traded for a bottle of Lowry’s salt.
OlSalty - July 28, 2009
Random commenters generally don't get information before reputable or semi-reputable sources
Jeff Sullivan - July 28, 2009
They referenced MLB Network
and if they actually reported it, it would have long since been reported by other sources.
Fuckmikereilly - July 28, 2009
I've been watching MLB network all night and they haven't said anything.
MFAN - July 28, 2009
This doesn't even pass the rosterbation test. The Red Sox need a shortstop badly. Why the hell would they trade Lawrie?
Decatur - July 28, 2009
Three-way deal in which Tampa tosses in Jason Bartlett to Boston and gets nothing in return
yay I can be like MLBtraderumors commenters!
seattlebruin - July 28, 2009
Speaking of Jason Bartlett, is Bartlett and Garza for Young quickly approaching Bedard levels of awfulness for the Twins?
seattlebruin - July 28, 2009
Pretty close.
Heydude - July 28, 2009
Still, it's not like it was obviously bad from the start.
At least, not obviously that bad.
Jack Moore - July 28, 2009
Just add "my sources tell me..."

If he is dealt, good for him. It is obvious he is not going to get his shot here.
jimmylauderdale - July 28, 2009
Hopefully he goes somewhere that will give him a chance
OlSalty - July 28, 2009
Darn it.
I come to LL and on the front page I see “Clement Traded.”
My heart literally skipped a beat, and then I re-read the headline.
Snowman1025 - July 28, 2009
Same here
Then I read it as “CLEMENT THREAT!”
OceanBird - July 28, 2009
Does the timing preclude the possibility he was traded with Washburn?
Sam Page - July 28, 2009
That's a possibilty.
JamMasterJesus - July 28, 2009
There was a good half hour in between but I don't know what that means
Graham MacAree - July 28, 2009

PositivePaul - July 29, 2009
Saying this is rude considering that Greyham's favorite player is Jeff Clement
Dewey N - July 28, 2009
Maybe they should trade him to the Ducks so he can get his ring
Graham MacAree - July 28, 2009
I find it unlikely that the Ducks will win the Stanley Cup next year and Clement doesn't have the knees to play hockey
Jeff Sullivan - July 28, 2009
Well you're a giant assleper
Graham MacAree - July 28, 2009
He doesn't even have the knees to return your favor
Jeff Sullivan - July 28, 2009
It's ok I'm resigned to the fact that he could never catch
Graham MacAree - July 28, 2009
He could take up cricket, maybe?
Jeff Nye - July 28, 2009
I was talking to Jeff Sullivan on the telephone and he told me he heard that Clement got traded for Cody Ransom and Brent Lillibridge
Dewey N - July 28, 2009
I would spend months making fun of Cody Ransom's van accident
Jeff Sullivan - July 28, 2009
I tried to start a Cody Ransom chant at Yankee Stadium two days ago and only 5 people joined me even after Cody hit two doubles
And only three of us gave him standing ovations. New Yankee Stadium fans suck
Dewey N - July 28, 2009
It's funny because you're implying that at some point
in time Yankees fans didn’t suck.
Liebkartoffel - July 28, 2009
Will this be like the monkey trade where it's not announced til 11.00 tomorrow?
Poochie - July 28, 2009
This late-night trade rumor'ing is really mean to those of us on the east coast. How could I possibly sleep?

Decatur - July 28, 2009
Hey, check out international calling cards before you leave. They are not all equal
Many are very regional friendly for say Africa, but punish you if you make a call in Mexico. Read the fine print, beware of connection penalties, the like.

So I've been trying to follow this but I think I've lost track of Clement's status over the last month or so.
Is he still physically capable of catching? Has he returned to catching recently?
Sorry for being off the ball with this.

Wakamatsu weighs in on Clement rumors...
Here’s what manager Don Wakamatsu said: “I just found out. I’m sitting here trying to get out of a four-game losing streak. If anything happens, I trust our organization in Jack Zduriencik’s hands. I don’t know any details beyond he was pulled,”
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/marinersblog/2009555294_tacomas_jeff_clement_pinch-hit.html

Not exactly the smartest guy around.
Coach Owens - July 28, 2009
Over-loud, over-dramatic, over-enthusiatic ....
msb - July 28, 2009
I think it's funny how sports journalists are somehow synonymous with sports knowledge. You don't expect Brian Williams to really know a shitload about national news and history - just report it.
These guys on KJR are entertainers, and nothing more.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 28, 2009
"You don't expect Brian Williams to really know a shitload about national news and history "
you don’t?
msb - July 28, 2009
Brian Doesn't Know News would be his screen name
Mariner John - July 28, 2009
I think a news journalist like that would obviously know a lot, but I don't think he'd know it necessarily a lot more than a person who watches Brian Williams report the news everyday.
Okay, BW would know more than the viewers, but my point is, it doesn’t make him a genius, he got the job for his reporting skills, not his knowledge is my main argument. Do we expect Stuart Scott to know a lot about ANYTHING? I really hope not.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 28, 2009
I mean, he does read a teleprompter.
Fin - July 28, 2009
The guys on KJR are hired for their opinions.
When your opinion is wrong and stupid, then you’re not very good at your job.
Coach Owens - July 28, 2009
No, they're hired for their on-air personalities.
Aaron Campeau - July 28, 2009
Are you saying that the guys on KJR do have great opinions?
Kenny Knows Sports - July 28, 2009
Some of them are smarter than the others.
When you claim something that’s wrong as a fact, like Softy often does, then you’re going to look stupid.
Coach Owens - July 28, 2009
Its really Mitch that I can't stand. But that had less to do with sports and more to do with being such an annoying show.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 28, 2009
And no, I don't really believe that it's all about on-air personality.
Otherwise people like Dori Monson wouldn’t have jobs.
Coach Owens - July 28, 2009
I actually think Mitch is the best interviewer on local sports radio
argystokes - July 28, 2009

It’s how loudly you state it
argystokes - July 28, 2009
Newscaster and Sportscenter anchors are different.
Mariner John - July 28, 2009
I did major in broadcast production and know for a fact that everybody who was majoring in broadcast journalism was a complete idiot.
And they won’t all be sports anchors.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 28, 2009
I agree, I don't think people in journalism are the smartest people.
Fin - July 28, 2009
What about me? I'm a double in journalism and broadcasting?
I guess that means periods of brilliance offset by utter retardation?
SethGrandpa - July 28, 2009
Nah...I forgot I don't do shit in school.
SethGrandpa - July 28, 2009
Sorry if a struck a chord there.
I said that without really thinking how I would offend someone. But from what I’ve heard journalism is a pretty bullshit major. But then again, business also doesn’t seem to be as rigorous as computer science or engineering.
Fin - July 28, 2009
No, I was kidding around, you've VERY justified in saying that.
I really don’t do anything. My friends who are engineers do more homework in a week than I do in a semester and that is 0% exaggeration.
SethGrandpa - July 29, 2009
Yes.
I have heard that in communications you don’t even have to write papers. That would be so nice.
Fin - July 29, 2009
I was a print journalism major, and I wanted to think that all the broadcast people were complete idiots, and it's just not true.
Teej - July 28, 2009
I'm guessing that they won't make it to the biggest stage in their field though if they're dumb.
Mariner John - July 28, 2009
On the ones that weren't sports.
Mariner John - July 28, 2009
I have to disagree.
I remember there was one guy in the journalism side of the class out of about 15 or 20 when I was graduating and everyone was sure he’d be the one to make it. Because he was smart? No. Because he had a voice like Stone Philips. It’s all about how you look and sound and are able to read a teleprompter.

Eyebrows - July 28, 2009

Kenny Knows Sports - July 28, 2009
My point is that making broad assertions based on that small a scope of experience is dumb
Aaron Campeau - July 28, 2009
It's not like I'm looking at someone who goes 10-for-20 to start the season and believe he's going to hit .500.
I was just giving an opinion based on my own experiences from going to a big journalism school and explaining that the kid that stood out the most was not the smartest, just looked and sounded the most like a real news anchor. NBC would never hire a really really smart ugly person over one who looked and sounded great but was an idiot. They do have writers.

My skin is thick. I used caps for comedic effect.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 28, 2009

I just know what the opinions of the people in the class were. And while I prepare for the hurling of insults I’ll just say that I went to WSU.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 28, 2009
So did another LLer and he seems to disagree with you vehemently
Aaron Campeau - July 28, 2009
Well I think its fair to say that its okay to disagree and it also doesn't necessarily make my opinion false.
It really is just my opinion based on my experiences and if you asked most of the people I went to school with, they would agree. But maybe it was just a bad year at Murrow.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
So did I. I was an editor at the Evergreen for four years.
In a general sense, it’s true, the broadcast majors tended to be the more vain people who were less interested in actual journalism. But I still knew a lot of people in the broadcast program who were dedicated to doing great work and just thought broadcast was a better medium for their careers. And that medium tends to require more . . . non-journalistic values, if you will.
Five years later, it’s looking like they might have been wise, as furious as it makes me to say that.
I get where you’re going. And I tend to have a pretty negative outlook toward broadcast journalism, trust me. But there are still a lot of good people there. The world just forced them into a medium that . . . OK I’m rambling. Go Cougs!
Teej - July 29, 2009
First off, Go Cougs
Secondly, I just found that most of the people that truly cared about journalism, majored in Production or Print Journalism. But the Broadcast Journalism majors reminded me a lot of the people who I see everyday in my new town. That would be Los Angeles and those people would be Actors. They have a look and they want to use it to their advantage and it’s rarely because they are the most amazing actors of all-time.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
And also
Its not that I think everyone in journalism, whether it be on TV or Radio is an idiot. I just think it’s wrong for so many to people believe that because you are on TV or Radio that makes you smart on the subject. I should know, for most of my life, I thought this to be true. There are very few people on ESPN left that I trust.

So since we've got a while
Why is Escobar rated so much higher as a prospect than Brignac? I understand Escobar is an elite defender while Brignac is merely very good. Escobar is a year younger, but their offensive statistics are similar. Is it simply Escobar’s stolen base potential that puts him over the top? Or do scouts just see something in his offensive development that will make him a star?
Fuckmikereilly - July 28, 2009
Being an elite defender is huge and from what I understand Escobar has plenty of potential at the plate
Graham MacAree - July 28, 2009
Especially at shortstop.
Slow Country - July 28, 2009
Doesn't Escobar also have great speed?
gregrabble - July 28, 2009

Slow Country - July 28, 2009
Hispanic, but let's not split hairs.
Jack Moore - July 28, 2009
Yes.
From what I can tell…
Brignac-good speed, great defense
Escobar-great speed, elite defense
I suppose that’s what separates them, I just wouldn’t expect one to be untouchable and the other one obtainable.
Fuckmikereilly - July 28, 2009
Brignac's not really a great shortstop
Graham MacAree - July 28, 2009
Could Escobar be the next Betancourt?
Fin - July 28, 2009
No, his body type is so skinny. He will never grow into Betancourt's size.

Graham MacAree - July 28, 2009
Bartlett is a lot better than Hardy.

Mariner John - July 28, 2009
I still can't believe Jason Bartlett was acquired for his defense and all of a sudden the Rays got that magnificent offense too.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 28, 2009

Fin - July 29, 2009

Kenny Knows Sports - July 28, 2009
I think you answered your own question
Hes a better defender. Hes a year younger.
Pessimistic Optimist - July 28, 2009
I read somewhere (Prospect Insider?) that Brignac could have a higher offensive ceiling.
Interesting. I’d take either one.
AtomicGarden - July 28, 2009
I was surprised at how gung-ho Churchill was about Brignac - he'd rather have him than Escobar.
Decatur - July 28, 2009
I would gladly take either.
Brignac probably has the offensive edge, but let’s not overlook how important a good defender at shortstop can be. Escobar gives me a boner.
Teej - July 28, 2009
Nomar, A-Rod, and Jeter all seemed to change the national perception of what a shortstop is supposed to be offensively.
Before that, it seems that shortstop and offense never went in the same sentence, you took what you could get. And guys like Ozzie Smith and Omar Vizquel are hall of famers for a reason.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 28, 2009
I think this is more of a fair-weather baseball fans point of view.
Still accurate though.
JamMasterJesus - July 28, 2009
I just don't think as many people cared if a shortstop hit .250 with no power in 1981.
Part of how the game has changed.

Going over their FanGraphs and Cube stats and some BA reports, Alcides Escobar's ceiling seems to be similar to Yunel Escobar's.
On another note, holy crap I can’t believe the Braves ever even let rumors swirl that they were trading Yunel Escobar earlier this month (Bobby Cox fed up with his head-case-ness, etc.). That would’ve been absolutely insane.

A player probably thinks
“We’re giving up a prospect, therefore, we must not be selling.”
That being said, I’d be surprised if this isn’t a package deal.
Fuckmikereilly - July 28, 2009
I agree.
Why trade just Clement unless it was a strictly need-for-need type swap but you’d still be expecting to get a young shortstop or pitcher maybe with lots of club control remaining. But not for a major league vet. It would make more sense if he was to sweeten a deal on a return for Washburn.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 28, 2009
Getting a major league qualtiy shortstop that we can have for several years is both.
CapSea - July 28, 2009

Kenny Knows Sports - July 28, 2009

This is the most underrated characteristic of pitching.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 28, 2009
Hmm.
1. Knows how to throw ball.
1a. Uses arm to throw ball rather than head or other extremity.
2. Throws regulation baseball.
3. Throws laterally, rather than straight up or straight down.
3a. Throws in the general vicinity of the batter, rather than at fans/third base ump/etc.
Pitching has many underrated characteristics.

CLEMENT AND LAHAIR FOR LOWRIE, BUCHHOLZ AND LESTER
WOW JACK Z IS A GENIUS!!
esoteric - July 28, 2009
Well since this is clearly out in the open and confirmed by non-Churchill sources...
I’m also supposed to love this trade FWIW.
But, yeah, here’s the lowdown as best as I can decipher:
It’s pretty clear Clement + at least one other minor-leaguer is involved.
Since it’s minor leaguers and not (as is known right now) anyone on the M’s MLB roster, it appears to be more of a “buy” move than a “sell” move.
Baker wouldn’t be surprised if Morrow’s involved.
The players we get in return should fit the mold of what Jack’s traded for thus far and it doesn’t sound likee rentals. I.E. younger guys with some MLB experience but under team control for at least a little while longer.
The rest of the details are pretty well concealed.
It’ll likely shock the hell out of all of us…
PositivePaul - July 29, 2009
Is there any confirmation as to who the other team might be? Is it really Boston and if not which contending team is really in need of a Jeff Clement?
Its harder to tell because Jeff Clement can not play so many positions.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
Graham would tell you otherwise.
Fin - July 29, 2009
Or not (m)any positions at all
calim - July 29, 2009
I don't see what position players Boston has that we would want that fit that mold
Unless it is Lowrie, but that doesn’t make sense for Boston. If it’s Boston, I’d almost certainly guess it’s pitching
Corco - July 29, 2009
Im going to count Buchholz before I go to sleep tonight.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009

PositivePaul - July 29, 2009
No
There is no good idea of who the other team might be.
Jeff Sullivan - July 29, 2009
It is definitely one of the other 29 MLB teams.
Unless you can trade with NPB teams now.
Eyebrows - July 29, 2009
HOLY SHIT YOU GUYS JUST GOT DARVISH
Eyebrows - July 29, 2009

Jeff Sullivan - July 29, 2009
Okay, but how not selling are we?
It’s not like we’re bringing in a rent a player or something, right?
DAMellen - July 28, 2009
From the Churchill wagon
“I have heard it is Jeff Clement and Brandon Morrow for Scott Kazmir.”
Corco - July 29, 2009
Wagon?
esoteric - July 29, 2009
(Churchill)
Corco - July 29, 2009
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO PLEASE NO
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
Agreed
Corco - July 29, 2009
Rick Peterson says he can fix Scott Kazmir in ten minutes.
esoteric - July 29, 2009
Can he fix his contract?
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
If he goes back to being good Kazmir his contract is aces.
I think it’s well within the realm of possibility that he does.
Aaron Campeau - July 29, 2009
Also couldn't Safeco Field help him as well?
Fin - July 29, 2009
Yes.
Although the Mariners defense isn’t as good as Tampa’s
Aaron Campeau - July 29, 2009
Could it be pretty close if the M's got Escobar, hypthetically, and Beltre comes back?
Fin - July 29, 2009
And Bedard is fixed!
And Griffey hits like 50 bombs.
Eyebrows - July 29, 2009
That helps their defense?
BQueezy - July 29, 2009
Sorry
Spaced. I glanced at the “pretty close” and assumed the discussion was about the Ms possibly getting back into competing for the AL West.
Eyebrows - July 29, 2009
Yeah but that's a massive hypothetical if Morrow and Clement are going to Tampa/Cle/Wherever
Aaron Campeau - July 29, 2009
And I mean massive as in there is no way we get Escobar if Morrow and Clement are going to Tampa/Cle/Wherever
Aaron Campeau - July 29, 2009
Hopefully in that case Brignac would be the consolation.
Fin - July 29, 2009
Come on, tell me you get the reference.
esoteric - July 29, 2009
Seriously, it's one of the greatest laugh lines in the past 10 years of baseball.
esoteric - July 29, 2009
I want to know!
I’m very curious.
JamMasterJesus - July 29, 2009
Jim Duquette traded a young prospect named Scott Kazmir to the Rays for Victor Zambrano.
Zambrano had been terrible before, was terrible at the time, and would be even worse in the future. Kazmir was, of course, perceived even then to be the future star he would later become. But Duquette pulled the trigger in large part because the Mets’ pitching Rick Peterson famously assured him that “I can fix Zambrano in ten minutes.”
Thus was the worst trade in the last 30 years of Mets history commenced.
esoteric - July 29, 2009
Keep in mind that we were laughed at for offering Freddy Garcia for Kazmir too
Freddy Garcia was Cy Young compared to Victor Zambrano
Corco - July 29, 2009
HA!
Never, EVER, listen to coaches.
JamMasterJesus - July 29, 2009
I feel like I also remember reading that the Mets didn't think of Kazmir as anything more than a number 5 starter, even if most scouts disagreed.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
Im just complaining about the contract while I have a chance.
This deal would be amazing for the Rays.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
The Mets knew he was going to blow up in 2009
That’s why they traded Victor Fucking Zambrano for him
Suddenly they look smart
Corco - July 29, 2009
Minyana is known for his intelligence.
Which is why Zduriencik chose him to make his first major trade with.
Fin - July 29, 2009
What about Jim Duquette?
Corco - July 29, 2009
Although Omar is the dumbest GM in baseball (non-Dayton division), that trade was done under the auspices of Jim Duquette.
esoteric - July 29, 2009
Coletti?
Aaron Campeau - July 29, 2009
His in-season moves last year were pretty damn sharp -- it seems he might have just needed McCourt to give him the monetary clampdown
And as dumb as many of his moves have been, it’s hard to argue with the team’s record over this season and the last.
esoteric - July 29, 2009
The White Sox beat the Astros in the World Series
Aaron Campeau - July 29, 2009
I would submit that Kenny Williams is one of the more chronically underrated GMs in baseball.
esoteric - July 29, 2009
He is sometimes good and sometimes bad.
He’s like a less extreme Sabean
Aaron Campeau - July 29, 2009
Now if only the same thing would happen to Tillman.
russak - July 29, 2009
Doubtful.
russak - July 29, 2009
Saturday it was those guys for Kazmir + Brignac so I'm guessing this is outdated and misinterpreted info.
Aaron Campeau - July 29, 2009
That's what I'm hoping
That would be a really fucking stupid trade if we did that
Corco - July 29, 2009
I wouldn't say "really fucking stupid"
it’s not indefensible. But for a Z move it would be pretty bad.
Fuckmikereilly - July 29, 2009
I'd barely consider it a good trade to do Morrow for Kazmir straight up
Throw in Clement and it’s absurdity
Corco - July 29, 2009
Well Clement has very little value
Jeff Sullivan - July 29, 2009
To us at least
Jeff Sullivan - July 29, 2009
Clements not having a bad year is he? I know he's inconsistent but this is nothing new.
And isn’t it common for hitters like a Jeff Clement to not truly blossom until their mid-to-late twenties? The high power/high strikeout guys?
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
Clement is 26
seattlebruin - July 29, 2009
After 4 years (I think) in a major college, I expect the blooming to come quick.
JamMasterJesus - July 29, 2009
I know, thats why I added the "to-late" to cover my tracks.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
If we didn't sign Griffey, we would've seen Clement in the majors already this season and who knows what he may have been able to do.
I don’t think its fair to give up on him now.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
Clement was awful last year
seattlebruin - July 29, 2009
Sorry Graham
seattlebruin - July 29, 2009
I like Jeffrey too, but we've got enough first basemen.
He just cant catch. He literally can’t. It hurts the poor lad.
JamMasterJesus - July 29, 2009
Doesn't do Rob Johnson any harm.
Eyeball Kid - July 29, 2009
Actually, I think about of my posts are slagging off RJ. I'll try to hold off
but he makes it so damn to do so.
Eyeball Kid - July 29, 2009
*about half of.
Eyeball Kid - July 29, 2009
We still need a DH...
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
DHs are cheap and if he nets us a good player in return, see ya later
seattlebruin - July 29, 2009
But it's so hard to find good ones!
Just ask everyone since Edgar!
Fuckmikereilly - July 29, 2009
In my opinion, there shouldn't be a guy whos is your 'real DH'
Just someone good at hitting that is blocked on the field by someone better. I know that’s a bit much to expect, but I hate the idea of keeping someone around JUST to pick up a bat.
JamMasterJesus - July 29, 2009
Well I definitely wouldn't say that about Jeff Clement, because his bat hasn't been great.
But there are definitely players who are much more valuable when they only DH and are worth keeping around, ie David Ortiz, Jim Thome, etc.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
But those are guys with A+ bats. Also, Liabilties in the field.
JamMasterJesus - July 29, 2009
Definitely agree. Like I said, I don't liken Clement to those guys, just making the point that sometimes you do have a guy in the system as your future DH for all of those reasons.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
Morrow and Clement for Kazmir would be really, really, really, unbelievably fucking stupid
Aaron Campeau - July 29, 2009
This just has to be based on perceived value.
Because the real value of Clement and Morrow is, IMO, pretty negligible.
I would bet good money that neither will ever amount to much of anything. Of course we should be able to get more for them than a Kaz who is breaking down and costs too much for only 1.4 years of team control.
esoteric - July 29, 2009
It seems to me that it wasn't long ago we were all praising Morrows swinging strike rate as a reason to believe that once he can go 6 innings or more, he'll be a very good starter.
There’s still juice to be squeezed out of this lemon.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
Morrow is a valuable commodity and Kazmir has been awful
Aaron Campeau - July 29, 2009
And has a pretty solid history of getting injured in pitching areas of his body.
abender20 - July 29, 2009
I disagree as to the degree of the stupidity, but it's a moot point.
Fuckmikereilly - July 29, 2009
This is a Bavasi move.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
I'm assuming this is old BS too.
Heydude - July 29, 2009

Eyebrows - July 29, 2009
Also, playing at the Trop will do wonders for Clement's knees.
Eyebrows - July 29, 2009
I like the notion of Kazmir when his name came after 'Reid Brignac and'
but alone? Fuck no.
Eyeball Kid - July 29, 2009
and... from Churchill again
“Actually guys, I believe the site has been fooled. I did not post the above comment, No. 40.
I have NOT heard that.
All I know is that Clement was traded, and at least one, possibly two or three other minor leaguers are involved and that it could be a three-way deal.

Eyeball Kid - July 29, 2009

Jeff Sullivan - July 29, 2009
Gotta admit, this is pretty damn fun.
Even the trolling is amusing.
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 29, 2009
This is a hacked comment.
PositivePaul - July 29, 2009
Hacked or one of those things where someone put
Jason A Churchili as the name with a capital “i”.
As long as the hacker doesn’t do anything else malicious, it’s kind of harmless. But I don’t really care for someone hacking Churchill’s account. That’s just not cool.
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 29, 2009
Problem should be mitigated now...
AFAIK his account hasn’t been hacked.
But yeah, as you can tell by how quickly that comment made it over here and exploded into discussion, it’s more than “harmless.”
In fact, it’s probably a criminal act, posing as Churchill when he’s a credentialed member of the media.
PositivePaul - July 29, 2009
I like how Churchill then says "There will not be any details until tomorrow. Go to sleep."
Just totally shuts everyone down.
Coach Owens - July 28, 2009
I could have made up that rumour
Poochie - July 28, 2009
Speaking of trades
What is it about Erick Aybar that I don’t understand? Why would the Angels be so reluctant to trade Aybar, Saunders, Wood, and another player for Roy Halladay? Woods value has only declined over the past two years, and you upgrade from Joe Saunders to at least 1.5 seasons of Roy Halladay. So I’m assuming Aybar is the sticking point. Wouldn’t you want Roy Halladay though and just run away with the west again and possibly in 2010?
Sorry to bring all this up, damn trading deadline it drives me insane.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 28, 2009
GOD
Eyebrows - July 28, 2009
Eyebrows, you don't have to get offended. I came from a point of ignorance on Erick Aybar already, you can just state why he's that good.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 28, 2009
Or you could maybe just look up some stats.
And it’s not just about Aybar. It’s about marginal wins of Roy Halladay and team control and pre-arb years and a lot of things.
Eyebrows - July 28, 2009
Im just of the opinion that the proposed Angels deal that LA shut down was not as good as the proposed deal from Philly.
Roy Halladay is a special pitcher and I don’t see a future superstar in that group.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 28, 2009
He also makes a lot of money.
Aaron Campeau - July 28, 2009
Wood can still pull it together.
And three young cheap players are definitely valuable assets, especially since Halladay won’t add that much more value to the Angels over the course of this year. Yes, there is another year as well – I know.
Eyebrows - July 28, 2009
I think the Angels have great prospects on the farm in order to get a Roy Halladay
I just don’t think they’re including any of them in a deal like this. And since Saunders, Wood and Aybar have already started their “service time” it doesn’t seem as sweet as a deal from Philly when many of them are still in the minors.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 28, 2009
Their farm system isn't very good.
Aaron Campeau - July 29, 2009
To be fair, the report said it was Joe Saunders OR Jered Weaver.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
Were I the Angels I don't think I'd take that deal so I hope the Angels take that deal.
Aaron Campeau - July 29, 2009
Aybar is really fucking good and really fucking cheap

Corco - July 29, 2009
As stupid as it sounds, this stolen moment in time where we KNOW Clement is gonebabygone, but still don't know what's coming back, is pretty exciting.
I suppose that’s all we have left to cling onto this season.
I will note that the goddamned motherfucking Angels came back from behind to win yet again tonight.
esoteric - July 29, 2009
You put the coin in, and pulled the lever
now you just gotta hope for those three fucking cherries.
Eyebrows - July 29, 2009
I know that Clement is getting to be too old to be a prospect anymore. I know that he has struggled to hit at the major league level.
But I still cant give up hope and I pray we really get something back for him. Maybe the Nats will have mercy on us for that draft and we’ll get Ryan Zimmerman. Or the Rockies will have mercy and we’ll get Troy Tulowitzki. Or the Brewers will have…. oh this would take forever.

Pessimistic Optimist - July 29, 2009
Oh c'mon.
It was a perfect troll. It had us all bunched up in our anxieties.
The fear of not knowing.
The fear that things really haven’t changed, and that even Jack Z might fuck up.
The fear of really being buyers instead of being sellers and buyers at the same time.
I nearly crapped my pants when I read it. It played to every single gut wrenching feeling we’ve been having since we heard Jeff was taken out of the game. It worked magic.
Now laugh at it. Laugh at yourself for being spooked. It’s fun. Break the tension and relax.
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 29, 2009
All good points and I mostly agree.
But on the other hand, look at the speed with which the Fake Churchill’s “scoop” has traveled. Shit like that can get out of hand quickly.
esoteric - July 29, 2009
Yeah. I know.
But that’s part of where we need to laugh at ourselves. Who spread it around? We did. We’re so information hungry that we wanted to know and wanted to tell everybody else as fast as possible. In the end, it’s all bogus, so does it really end up hurting anybody?
I think what makes it work so much better than the MLBTraderumor.com fucker posting on Jed Lowrie is that this one was at least somewhat close to believable initially. We were ready and willing to possibly accept that we’d screwed up. Thankfully, we started questioning it soon afterward. Our logical minds won out in the end.
Still, yeah, it’s kind of mean. Fun, but mean. And if it was really Jason’s account hacked, well that just sucks.

Latest Little Rumor on Prospect Insider...
Clement and Morrow to Cleveland, Lee to Tampa, Kazmir and Brignac to Seattle.
The only part I can’t get my head around is what’s in it for Cleveland? They seem to know better than that.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
This isn't a new rumor at all.
It’s been around since early Saturday morning and thought to be largely dead by Saturday night.
Aaron Campeau - July 29, 2009
My bad, don't mean to bring up old news.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
In my defense, Churchill just acknowledged it by saying its still very possible.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
Hasn't that rumour been around for a while now?
Eyeball Kid - July 29, 2009
It's the same trade from the other day, only this one doesn't have Martinez going to Tampa Bay.
Heydude - July 29, 2009
It still makes sense balance-wise, as well as fitting within the "5 player" rubric.
Lee AND Martinez to Tampa was originally part of this rumor, and that just didn’t make any sense as the two of them were far too much to give up for the return of Clement and Morrow, no matter how much $$$ or low-level prospects were kicked in.
Obviously, it’s all speculation, but I think this could be the one. I’d LIKE it to be the one, at least.
esoteric - July 29, 2009
I guess theres no chance that Brignac was pulled mid-game?
That would make this a lot easier.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
If Martinez were included the Rays would be giving them Davis and likely moving Pena.
Aaron Campeau - July 29, 2009
Even with Wade Davis...
Martinez AND Lee for Davis, Morrow, and Clement? I would hope they’d get a better package than that. That’s not exaclty Sizemore, Lee, Philips.

Mark Texiera, Erik Bedard...
Those were only for ONE player. We’re talking about the reigning Cy Young (and you can make of that what you want, I know that’s what the Indians are selling) and Victor Martinez.. they should be able to get at least 3 superb prospects in my opinion and Morrow and Clement have lost that pedigree. Maybe Wade Davis, Brandon Morrow, and that outfielder prospect on TB whose name just slipped my mind.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
but cleveland LIKES our prospects.
They have half a team from us already
Whoopetydoo - July 29, 2009
That's it, I'm catching the next Pimpmobile out of here.
Hopefully something will have happened in the next six hours or so.
Eyebrows - July 29, 2009
Bite! My! Shiny! Metal! Dafodil!
The Typical Idiot Fan - July 29, 2009
I am going to miss Clement.
Mariner Melee - July 29, 2009
I find it interesting that nobody has really expressed remorse or sadness that he's 99% gone.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
I'm just sad he never really got a chance.
I mean we have Rob Fucking Johnson doing the catching up here.
Mariner Melee - July 29, 2009
Rob Fucking Johnson has knees.
I Lick Squirrels - July 29, 2009
Jeff Clement doesn't have knees?!
Holy shit I’m glad we got rid of him before other GM’s noticed.
Fuckmikereilly - July 29, 2009
He's like the R.A. Dickey of leg joins.
esoteric - July 29, 2009
*JOINTS.
FUCK I HATE RUINING MY OWN JOKE.
esoteric - July 29, 2009
Esoteric, sorry to go off-topic but I only have to ask this once..
does your name have anything to do with the rapper Esoteric?
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
Not in the slightest.
While I love the fuck out of music, I can’t stand hip-hop. It’s the only major genre I can’t get int in any way.
esoteric - July 29, 2009
Ha, okay.
I’m not even the biggest rap fan, but I know a guy who is touring with him so I had to ask.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
You try Lupe?
JamMasterJesus - July 29, 2009
Look, my favorite band of all time is GENESIS -- progressive-era Genesis.
With Pavement and Radiohead heading up my list of modern acts. You have no idea how unbelievably far away I am from hip-hop, in terms of my musical aesthetic.
esoteric - July 29, 2009
Alice in Chains for me
Mariner Melee - July 29, 2009
Pearl Jam has to be mine.
Not just because of Ten, because of their versatility and staying power afterwards. In fact, Ten isn’t even my favorite album.
Fin - July 29, 2009
You consider Pavement to be modern?
I Lick Squirrels - July 29, 2009
Which should tell you just how disaffected I am with music of the last decade.
Seriously though, Pavement is and will remain eternally fresh for me….musical greatness like theirs comes along only once every ten years or so.
But we are veering off-topic here.
esoteric - July 29, 2009
Whopsie.
JamMasterJesus - July 29, 2009
Radiohead is my third favorite artist of all time. Lupe Fiasco is second.
JamMasterJesus - July 29, 2009
Dude, this will change your opinion on hiphop
here. Its a Swedish Hip Hop/swing band. I hate hip hop too, but I can’t get enough of this.
Fin - July 29, 2009
That's some pretty good shit.
Though I’ll admit the language barrier doesn’t cross over as well in rap, in my opinion. and my favorite band of all-time is German, which I don’t speak either.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
I would say that I wish I knew what they are saying.
But Ebonics is also a language of its own, so I am not too bothered. I just enjoyed the emceeing and the swing music.
Fin - July 29, 2009
Meh, he didn't have any future at all here.
I Lick Squirrels - July 29, 2009
I couldn't really care less.
I’m more interested in the returns than the costs… my have my thoughts changed since the end of the Bavasi era.
batura - July 29, 2009
it's simply because the mariners have sucked my emotion for him away
I’ve been hearing about Clement forever, but he’s never panned out and has been jerked all over the place. I’m sad he didn’t make it here, but that sadness has been experienced already with him not being a part of the major league team. Clement leaving isn’t really sad because I’ve said goodbye to him already.
mwalter - July 29, 2009
He's pretty much been my favorite prospect since we drafted him
That being said, the good of the team comes before my personal attachments.
Fuckmikereilly - July 29, 2009
Hot damn shit's finally happening!
Goose - July 29, 2009
Well the Clement jersey purchase was a poor decision.
Mariner John - July 29, 2009
It's ok
Graham owns one as well.
Fin - July 29, 2009
Graham has Doyle, Clement, and Cedeno as far as Mariners jerseys go though.
BrettJMiller - July 29, 2009
What crappy luck with jerseys.
I don’t see why he doesn’t just by a MacAree custom jersey.
I would buy my own customer jersey, but I can just wait until Adam Moore makes the big league squad.
Fin - July 29, 2009
If he bought a MacAree jersey the FO would somehow find a way to trade his analytical skills to the Padres.
You know it would happen.
esoteric - July 29, 2009
Per Divish
File this name away as well — Aaron Pribianic of Class A Clinton
I hope he is wrong.
Mariner Melee - July 29, 2009
Tell me something about this guy.
Namely, why I would be bothered to see him go?
esoteric - July 29, 2009
Here ya go.
Pribanic
Drafted in the third (I believe) round of the 2008 draft. Good pitcher, would be sad to loose him.
Mariner Melee - July 29, 2009
Whoops
Proper link
Mariner Melee - July 29, 2009
He's been doing really well this year.
But we seem to have a lot of guys like him in the lower minors.
Mariner John - July 29, 2009
Even still, he's not a non-prospect throw-in.
So if he’s going too, the return better be sweet.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
I wouldn't say non-prospect.
He’s not a Quiroz or anything. The man does have a future.
Mariner Melee - July 29, 2009
I didn't say non-prospect either, I think he's got potential to pitch in the majors. And as far as I'm concerned, even making it to the majors makes you a big deal.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
I read your comment wrong.
I apologize. I read it as he WAS a non-prospect.
Mariner Melee - July 29, 2009
Lorin is better, and I guess Cortes is a decent replacement
But I am not thrilled to see him go. Now that is without knowing the return. I may do back flips I don’t know yet.
Mariner Melee - July 29, 2009
Yeah, I'd rather give someone else up.
But lower minors starters isn’t exactly something we have a dearth of.
Mariner John - July 29, 2009
And thank god for that
it seems like forever since we’ve had a good higher-level pitching prospect. Hopefully at least one or two of them will become legitimate prospects.
Fuckmikereilly - July 29, 2009
Well we did have that one guy that will be pitching today.
russak - July 29, 2009
Some of the nicer things about Pribanic
He has only given up one homer run in 87.0 innings, and he get nearly 3 ground balls for every fly ball. Not sure about his velocity or anything like that, but nice peripherals.
Mariner Melee - July 29, 2009
It's settled then. Pribanic will be an All Star.
russak - July 29, 2009
YES!
No you’ve got it.
Mariner Melee - July 29, 2009
So then we did trade him to the Red Sox?
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
His HR rate screams unsustainable and it could very well make him look better than he really is to another team.
Aaron Campeau - July 29, 2009
Although good heavens does he ever have a low FB%
Aaron Campeau - July 29, 2009
Pitching well
didn’t have fantastic upside though. On the Future Forty they had him as a potential 1.50 WAR player. Seems like a decent complimentary piece. Let’s hope we’re getting something good.
Fuckmikereilly - July 29, 2009
The next peson who calls Rob Johnson a bad baseball player will lose my respect.
I have just accepted (with the help of my mariner bias) that Rob Johnson is just as good as Jeff Clement. And that’s considering his health, and uncanny ability to make good pitchers love pitching to him.
JamMasterJesus - July 29, 2009
I don't know if you noticed.
But his CERA went up in the past few days.
Fin - July 29, 2009
This a joke?
Mariner Melee - July 29, 2009
No joke. I like him. Those two reasons arent really my reasons, but more like selling points for myself.
cERA can suck my dick.
JamMasterJesus - July 29, 2009
Who is this Cera? Can I get her number?
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
He played "George Michael" on the cult TV show Arrested Development.
He’s also been in some shitty movies playing essentially the same character.
esoteric - July 29, 2009
The best awkward actor of our lifetime.
JamMasterJesus - July 29, 2009
Rob Johnson is a bad baseball player
manifestus - July 29, 2009
We're trading for Roy Halladay aren't we?
Goose - July 29, 2009
Nothing's going to happen tonight, is it?
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
No. I imagine Jack is asleep.
Goose - July 29, 2009
I bet he is as hot as the rest of us right about now.
Fin - July 29, 2009
I'm gonna set my alarm for 8 AM just so I'm up in time when it becomes official.
And so I can get a few things done before the heat comes back.
Goose - July 29, 2009
If only he had a twitter so we could know.

It seems as though you don't pull a guy unless a deal is done.
So what the hell happened? I give this 50/50 odds of being a way to fuck with the fans.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
Speaking prospect wise, I saw someone in the M's Organization who had 72 K's and 3 BB's.
Who was that? Did anyone see that and sorry if this violates something?
M'sin.. - July 29, 2009
Erasmis Ramirez? Is that his name?
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
Yes, that looks very familiar.
M'sin.. - July 29, 2009

Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
Still impressive.
M'sin.. - July 29, 2009
No, Im excited to see those numbers.
Kenny Knows Sports - July 29, 2009
The last time I got excited about a trade...
I had a nightmare that we unloaded our farm system for Erik Bedard. Good thing it was only a dream.
OceanBird - July 29, 2009
Make sure to pay careful attention to the Orioles game today because its gonna to hurt really fucking bad
russak - July 29, 2009
Damn right it fucking hurts
Can you believe that those lucky Baltimore fans are going to get plush oriole toys tomorrow? What a fantastic promotion! And all we get are stinkin’ Bobbleheads.
