With Philadelphia and Milwaukee out, who is interested in Washburn ?
It sounds as if there is only tepid interest from the Yankees and Rangers. The Dodgers are not inclined, evidently, and Minnesota has other needs. Tampa is too smart to be fooled, I suspect.
I wonder if Seattle over played its hand, when it let the Phillies realize that Lee is greater than Washburn and not much more expensive. I’d love to see Texas jump into this, but it will be a real test to get an intra-division deal done. Perhaps the Yankees will move if Boston steps up for Holladay.
He’s got elbow issues and his BB/9 has been on the rise the past 3 seasons, while is K/9 has declined from 10.1 to 7.1 this season. This not to say that he can’t get things righted, but we already have a guy in Morrow with the same control issues. Do we really want two high upside projects on our hands (maybe in the hope that one works out)?
First reaction: I'm not very happy. I wanted Snell desperately, which I'm happy about, but Jack Wilson does nothing for our future.
Plus Snell was a guy the Pirates were trying to GIVE away earlier this year. Jack Wilson’s a free agent, is 33, is right handed – I don’t understand this much. Also, why did we have to trade all three of the Clinton pitchers? Our minor league starting pitching depth is now terribly thin. I remember Graham said that we didn’t draft any top-200 starting pitchers in the 2009 draft because we had plenty of depth in the low minors, but now that’s shot to hell. In all non-short season ball, we’ve got maybe five pitching prospects max who have a chance at being big league starting pitchers: JC Ramirez (A+), Michael Pineda (A+), Ken Kasparek (A), Doug Fister (AAA), and maybe Nick Hill (AA). Add that to Felix, Snell, RRS, Olson, and Vargas, and Morrow who’ve already been in the big leagues.
The good thing, though, is that this leaves Zduriencik plenty flexible to swing more deals – we could still trade for Kazmir and Brignac in the off-season, we still have Wlad, and there’s still Washburn to be traded (I’m hoping to the Phillies if they lose out on Halladay or to the Brewers for Rickie Weeks). In GMZ we still trust.
Wilson doesn’t turn 32 until this december. So that would make him 32 of all of next season. Plus he isn’t a free agent, because the M’s have a club option on him for $8.4 million for the 2010 season. And the Pirates have reportedly thrown in cash in the deal.
Ah. I wrote this before checking Cot's. Thanks for correcting me.
But I don’t think the Pirates paying all their salaries has been confirmed by anyone else yet. So I’m still not terribly happy. Wilson should be a solid stopgap. I’m not freaking out, though.
back in my day we had to fill out paperwork in triplicate
and walk it to Wilkins down the hall so he could enter it into the internets before his coffee break.

We're putting new coversheets on all the TPS reports

I hear Snell's not such a straight shooter
greymstreet - July 29, 2009
Straight shooter?
You mean he lied about depression and wanting to commit suicide to get a ticket out of Pittsburg?
Maybe he’s also a genius.
Sundevil78 - July 29, 2009
Catcher?
Poochie - July 29, 2009
Jeff Clement (DH - Pit)
Jack Moore - July 29, 2009
The Pit official news article cites him as a 1B
That says plenty

Looks like the Yankees or Rays at this point.
Mariner Melee - July 29, 2009
Again, the Rays are not dumb. They are not likely to give up anything of value for Washburn.
Aaron Campeau - July 29, 2009
Especially since they would have to move Kazmir to make room for him and Kazmir is better anyways.
Aaron Campeau - July 29, 2009
Worse
With the acquisition of Snell, Wash & Morrow are arguably more expendable to the Mariners now and the potential trade haul(s) smaller.
If there is a further trade due with either or both Wash/Morrow then it feels like this one has appeared in the wrong order.
MarkE - July 29, 2009
I don't think it works that way
pygmalion - July 29, 2009
If you still see Morrow as a starter.
If not, then the bullpen could use him one he gets himself right.
mcwalter44 - July 29, 2009
I dunno Philly's rotation is thin
as long as they don’t mind an all lefthanded rotation the might still be in
Poochie - July 29, 2009
And why wouldn't they mind an all LHP rotation?
(Insert Raul taking pride in his defense .gif here)
pmc47 - July 29, 2009
I was thinking because there's a good chance they will face the Cardinals in the first round
Poochie - July 29, 2009
Hey do the Twins still want Wilson?
Can we flip him over to them? Then maybe we can get another SS for Washburn? Brignac? Eh? Eh? Washubrn and Morrow for Kazmir and Brignac?
Well I can dream.
Mariner Melee - July 29, 2009
Kazmir is not a type of guy to target.

mcwalter44 - July 29, 2009
Z clearly wanted another high upside project
since he just traded for Snell.
Rollo Tomasi - July 29, 2009
Good job Jack.
Filled a hole at SS and the rotation with spare parts and duct tape. very Mcguyveresque

They are not after Halladay.

Sports radio should be filled with glee.
