Lookout Landing

Jarrod Washburn to Detroit

Per Salk. Details as we get them.

Thank goodness.

Update: Luke French and Maurico Robles. Awesome awesome awesome awesome. French is a 23 year old average-looking ML lefty under club control for six more years and is basically what would happen if you went back in time and grabbed Washburn from 11 years ago. Robles is a 20 year old left handed A-baller and helps replace the three guys we gave up for Wilson and Snell. Amazing.

Updated update: Robles strikes out a lot of people. His swinging strikeout rate is 23%. 23%! Walks are too high but not a big deal. This looks like an absolute steal. Velo goes from 88-93, good curve, working on a changeup. If he gets the change working he's a starter in the bigs.

Exellent news although I have no idea what the Tigers could give back given

their weak system. But it doesn’t really matter. Just glad we’re likely going to avoid letting Wash take up a ton of future payroll.

However, I will say thank you to Washburn for a nice job this year.

Luke French and a minor leaguer

hahahahahhaha

I read we're getting Luke French and another player.
Yeah! I needed some good news.
I can't believe MLBn likes this.
Seriously?

And a class A pitcher.

Didnt we just beat French?

Luke French and Marcio Robles

per Drayer

I wont believe it until Buster Olney confirms.
Confirmed

on sportscenter.

I'm still waiting for Buster.

He really seemed to have his finger on the Washburn pulse the whole way.

And he is now on 710
There goes USSM
It took 11 minutes

Whoever had the over wins.

Dave Cameron

Time to come over to the dark side, and leave the hamster Wordpress behind

Huh, looks like Robles is a high strikeout/high walk pitcher. At least so far.

11.34 K/9 in A ball this year. Pretty good for a 20 year old.

Not so high walk, really

given his age and level.

Wow, why on earth would they give us Luke French?

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

French...a young Washburn?
It wouldn't surprise me if he was better than Washburn right now
Yup, but much cheaper and club controlled for six seasons
From Detroit's official website

here

Awesome!

Bye, Jarrod!

And....what kind of velocity on Robles? What are his pitches?
He's inconsistent

Some days high 80s, some low-mid 90s.

Jeez...

….so he could be throwing change ups by accident…

YES YES YES YES YES

Z you are a golden god

Predictably the people worried about another Olson start need not worry.
Huzzah! French to fill Washburn's hole in the rotation now (presumably) and Robles for funsies.
Weeee, now Snell can replace Olson!
Our rotation suddenly looks a bit more respectable!
This is a great day.
Interesting that the M's have gotten two small lefties in Saito and Robles who can

get big K’s. Nice left handed relievers on the way.

Don't write off Robles as a reliever yet

Where he is now, he has a real chance to be a really good starter.

Saito started in his last game too, I think.

So it’s possible they could both be converted into SP prospects.

With good reason, imho.

Saito’s another one who looked too impressive to me to be automatically relegated to the ‘pen just because he’s short. (That’s all it is with either of these guys, I think — scouting prejudice.)

The Tigers are fools!
And Washburn gets to go to a contender close to home, and may just want to stay there....
Dear Jack:

Get you fucking coat, you’ve pulled!

I've said this before

but the Tigers are run by crazy people

He's going to Detroit. DETROIT. Poor bastard
If this is a Kentucky Fried Movie reference you are a goddess.
Dang. Well spotted.
Faith = Restored

Not that I really doubted Zduriencik, but still

From Kevin Goldstein
kingclip: New #Mariners P Mauricio Robles is a small lefty with a big arm, 90-94 mph with +command, breaking ball flashes plus, prob. bullpen in end.

Link

and
New Mariners LHP Lucas French, big, thick LHP, 88-92 mph from hi 3/4 slot, decent slider, true plus change, good athlete and fielder

.

hmmmm

French’s avg FB has been 87.2…

Wooooo! Wooooo!

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

I love you Jack!

MLBn still haven't settled on how to pronounce Robles' name.
Thanks Wash

Seriously. I know the guy is very, very well compensated to perform, so it’s not like doing well was some altruistic endeavor. But putting it together this year was a huge benefit to the team on the field, and apparently now to the team’s future by making himself a valuable trade piece.

Good luck in Motown dude. You done good.

Hear, hear.
The only sad part about this is that Washburn isn't going into a situation where he'd absolutely get lit up
He'll probably be in a pissy mood for a couple starts and pitch poorly as a result
Why be pissy?

He’s now on a winner :)

He's actually moving close to home, to pennant race, and in a big ballpark with Granderson flanking him

As long as Guillen stays on the DL he should be ecstatic

Salk mentions that he spoke to him and that he's a bit disappointed because he wanted to stay in Seattle

He’ll be happy for the reasons you mentioned, but I’m just saying it may take him a start or two to adjust

Carlos Guillen's been DH'ing all week.
stick a fork in Washburn

without Rob Johnson, he is done

GOOD POINT!

After two bad August Washburn starts, we should offer his personal catcher in a deal for Porcello.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahahahaah his tRA is better than Washburns
I know right
French is running a 9.1% swinging strike rate in the majors over his stint so far!
That's not actually very good
Oh whoops I thought you meant swinging strikeout percentage

That is good!

Yay~!
Does the tilde mean you have a rough approximation of excitement?
Dave, please go on ESPN radio today, and whip Brock and Salk into shape.

This is such a great move, but those two guys are going to be bitching bigtime

He's a rookie with a mid 3 ERA.

How can they complain?

No, the link Graham provided to Salk's blog makes him sound like he thinks it's a good trade
I was a vocal proponent for the M’s keeping Washburn, especially if the return was a position player. Given that they got back two young lefthanders (one who is in the majors), how can we be too upset here?
Did you hear Salk giving Brock shit for Brock giving his evaluation of the Snell/Wilson trade as a number grade and not, as Salk preferred, as a letter grade.

Classic stuff.

"Robles strikes out a lot of people. His swinging strikeout rate is 23%. "

…in high A ball. What does that project to in the majors?

A lot
Is there someplace that has a standard formula / rule of thumb? couldn't find such in fangraphs
Just look at the leaderboards for each league to get an idea of what's good and what isn't

23% is Kyle Drabeky. Drabek is one of the best prospects going right now.

Think Z is done now?
Victor Martinez... Victor Martinez... Victor Martinez...
Drayer commented "I do not believe that this will be the only move made by the Mariners today. Stay tuned."
Who else is going?

Branyan? Could they find someone to take a chance on Bedard? I Hope to god they find a trade for Bedard.

He's on the DL so can't be dealt.
Bedard, that is.
Wasn't Yuni on the DL?
He was already rehabbing
But he was rehabbing..
He was rehabbing, I think.
Yuni was being loaned out to the Tacoma Zoo at the time of the trade
He's no Ken Griaffey Jr
You weren't even at that event when it happened.
Jeff was kind enough to write a recap
He was rehabbing.

But yeah, you’re right about that.

We could have simultaneously activated and traded him
Possibly Mark Lowe or Sean White (Jayson Stark was mentioning Lowe to Dodgers rumors last night).
They have Sherrill now, so I doubt they'd need Lowe
They were thinking about trading Kershaw for Cliff Lee
I agree, but this was after Sherril was traded.

It’s just rumors though, but the Dodgers do have a pretty silly front office.

MLBTR was saying the Dodgers wanted to pick up two relievers.
Yes the are a shining beacon of legitimate journalism
Yeah, but it was probably a link to an ESPN article

Here it is. It mentions Lowe.

I thought you can't trade players on the DL
Bedard's DL'd. I think that means he can't get traded.
I think Branyan would be unlikely
I would think the bullpen guys are going to get shipped around

Lowe, Batista, White…

Morrow, perhaps?
Maybe the White Sox need a center fielder
I don't think Morrow has the range for center, myself.
No I mean, we have a centerfielder to sell who is familiar with Chicago
Kenji Johjima for 14 cedar bats and a bag of catfish
Mmmmm

Catfish.

Zduriencik is good at his job.
This should be more than enough to keep Felix happy too!
They're surprisingly thrilled.

Reading Bless You Boys, Detroit fans are happy about this too.

Because for some reason they think Jarrod Washburn is good
Shiny ERA, Shiny ERA!
Awww

Shiny ERA indeed

Haha.
That whole thread

is full of epic fail

Eh, there's a fangraph reference in there.

Pretty much the one guy.

Yeah

But doesn’t his summary of Dave’s opinion imply (wrongly) that the trade was even?

For a moment I thought you were asking for my opinion on Dave Cameron's article.

That was a good laugh! Then I read it correctly.
Beats me, from their perspective it’s a good pitcher who’s going to keep you in games, for the stretch. From my perspective we got some arms for awhile. I’d be a bit pissed off if I was a Detroit fan.

I was about to say something about giving Tigers fans the benefit of the doubt

But then I saw that exact post. Yeesh.

Also,
It’s experience we got. With a good ERA

Their excitement

Is the kind you have when you are in a pennant race. Good trade for us. I like it because we can stay in the hunt in 2009 with it. But I’d also trade our excitement for theirs, misplaced as it may be.

Of course, it we were in the Central…

They think he projects as a Type A free agent.

What?

How is he not a Type A?

Especially based on his ERA this year, and his IP over the last few seasons? I thought that being a Type A was pretty easy, I remember last year some Type A’s who were pretty much garbage players till making the list

Of course maybe they changed the rules or I’m mistaken…

They take more than this year into consideration.

He’s fourth from the bottom in terms of Type B guys.

IP, ERA, K's, Wins, Win% for SP

all over the last 2 years. I think it’s top 20% of players in each grouping (SP, RP, C, 1B/OF, SS/2B/3B), usually around 16 or 17 make Type A. Washburn is a Type B right now (the next 16-17 or so), but he could definitely slip out of Type B to nothing over the rest of the season fairly easily.

Not to mention you have to offer him arbitration in order to get any comp picks, which he would probably accept, and would make in the ballpark of 13-15M.

Yeah exactly so offering him arbitration is kind of a lose lose deal for them, just as it would have been for us.
Perhaps now we can stop threatening to turn on Z simply because we don't like the leaks that we hear from other organization

This is the way the organization has decided to run and it has lead to a nearly spotless track record.

Cameron's Analysis

Up on Fangraphs.

Thanks for the heads up.

Heading there now before that site crashes again, too.

Short version

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Long version:

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES

I LOVE YOU NEW FRONT OFFICE! DON’T EVER LEAVE!

Awesome trade guys. It's semi-rebuilding and getting better in the present at the same time. Thanks goodness for Safeco and Endy/Gutierrez/Ichiro/Langerhans? So my question

is…what was with the Snell/Wilson deal? That doesn’t seem like a rebuilding move…

It's a 2010 move

Setting up for contention next year

We have a much better ML roster than four days ago

and Beltre is due back within a week

We’ve bought

We've bought with next year in mind rather than this year
Which makes it even better!
Snell's still pretty young

and Wilson provides great defense and helps to bridge the gap until we get someone to replace him long-term.

Another thing is (likely) losing Griffey/Sweeney

GMZ + Wak seem to like having high-character veterans around, so assuming Griffey and Sweeney are gone, Wilson steps into that role – as well as being a good glove.

And Snell’s young and potentially under team control for several years at reasonable salaries if we elect to pick up his options.

Any money exchanged in this deal? Do the Tigers take on the remaining of Washburn's salary?
I'd imagine we're eating the salary
This deal didn't actually happen as Washburn has no trade value
You confused me.
No Wilkin Ramirez, but thats okay.

Oh YES!

Goodbye you Big Blond Bearded Bum!

Woud anyone doubt that Z has a young shortstop on his that can be had for a significantly lower price than Brignac would've cost?
Me

because I don’t see anyone like that out there.

Here is the report on it from ....

the Freep

“Washburn gives the Tigers something they have lacked: a veteran left-handed starter. Such a pitcher is especially valuable at Comerica Park, with its big expanse of left-center that makes power-hitting more difficult for all the right-handed hitters who tend to play against left-handed pitching.”

I love how they have no recollection of how badly they destroyed him in 2008
FTFY

“Such a pitcher is especially valuable at Comerica Park Safeco Field, with its big expanse of left-center that makes power-hitting more difficult for all the right-handed hitters who tend to play against left-handed pitching."

For which they gave up a rookie left-handed starter who's pitched equally well this year.
The best part is how this was announced shortly after I got out of bed
The best part is how it was announced that he was traded and my internet then immediately crashed
You host USS Mariner?

Color me impressed.

Well I do until September.
I think it's funny that the national media seems to hate this deal.

They seem to have a hard time with the fact that Jarrod Washburn is…well…Jarrod Washburn

I'm happy we didn't trade for a Yankee.
Austin Jackson?

They says he’s off limits, but I dunno…

I kind of liked some of the Yankees prospects, but Jack seems to want

young ML ready players. So getting a package of young prospects wasn’t too likely.

It's pretty impressive that Jack basically turned Washburn into a 23-year-old who we control for many more years and a high upside minor leaguer.
The Yankees say they wanted Wash

But then they say all of the prospects that anyone would ever want is off limits… I don’t think they wanted him that much.

I'm so happy to come on here and see the comment

" “awesome awesome awesome awesome”

.

.

Look behind you, a cheese-eating surrender monkey!
Also per MLBTR and ESPN

Gammons said that SIX different teams have called GMZ in the last day to inquire about Felix. Supposedly GMZ said that there was nothing worth talking about…

I'd listen to an Utley/Werth/Rollins/Lee/Drabek package
If they throw in the money to pay some of those salaries, sure.
I want nothing to do with Jimmy Rollins
I'm ok with having black players on the team
Stick to player

Griffey fills our quota

Snell will double our quota once he gets the call.
Exactly

Quotas are in place for a reason, going a little over is fine but triple, quadruple? That’s when you start hurting your team

wut
NO NO NO NO NO
DOUBLE HELL NO
IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT I SAY HELL YES

and I say that knowing full well nobody will give up enough to make the trade worthwhile from Z’s perspective.

Oh! That reminds me, the Price is Right is on!

Thanks!

Only worth watching if it's a rerun..

Drew Carey sucks as a host

He's getting a lot better though.
A turd sandwich gets a little better with a tomato on it.

But it’s still a turd sandwich.

As great as Felix is, I think you have to listen to the offers.

If we got a Bedard+ like package for Felix, you’d have to think about it.

There are still GMs out there who are willing to sell their soul for a #1 SP.

No, even that wouldn't be enough

Felix el Rey is at least as talented, younger, putting it all together, and — here’s the big one — doesn’t have a serious injury history.

I don't know. The future in Texas looks as good as it ever has right now thanks to one trade. If we could get a package that was better than that one in some way, and it pains me to say that about Felix, but we'd have to consider it.
Yeah, but Teixeira was a *far* less valuable player.
Exactly.

So presumably we’d be able to get a far more valuable return. Imagine getting our version of Andrus and Feliz. If you get an offer with a top-5 prospect, a top 15 prospect, a top 50 prospect and a handful of A-ball live arms/toolsy fielders, you have to seriously consider that trade, especially if the top two prospects are at positions of need (SP and SS, say)

I am going to guess that when Jeff posted the french flag last week during the Washburn start

He was trying to imply to us that we were going to surrender him to the Tigers. Good job Sullivan, Thank you for continuing to provide us with inside information.

Also...

I wonder who will be this trading deadline’s Woody Woodward….

I need a closer..no wait two closers….here take my best prospects please…….

I was secretly hoping that would be the case with Washburn that we would wait until the last hour and fleece the shit out of some team….I guess we were able to do that early in the day instead!

Anyone else a "fan" of the Seattle Mariners facebook page?

The comments on the trade are absolute GOLD. Just hilarious.

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/posted.php?id=33054718978&share_id=69478234944&comments=1#s69478234944

I read the comments on a Washburn post on Facebook once.

Never again.

I like this one:
Joseph Perkins
hell…eff the bag of balls i woulda taken an empty beer bottle for washburn..
I've been SO tempted to straighten those people out

But it would just be a terrible, terrible mess.

Those people are insane.

Me too.

It’s just not worth it. You could be at it for hours and it would not help.

Don't do it don't do it don't do it. It's 10000x worse than Baker's blog. The first comment I read on Baker's blog by the way:

That’s nice. Where’s the bat?

My Favorite

“What a waste….Does this mean the Mariners have officially thrown in the towel for 2009 and I should quit watching and get ready for Seahawks season?!?!?! I think so….”

God I hate people like that!

No no...

“Lookin like Jack Z’s first ‘Bavasi’, but who knows?”

HAHAHAHHAHAA

what i hate most about these people is...

When we win like 8 games in a row and are right back in it…they’ll hop back on the bandwagon like they never left…..

I like the guy who was mad because we traded for a guy whose name he could not pronounce.

I wish he was our GM.

FRENCH. It rhymes with WRENCH

Doesn’t seem that difficult

Just the pure expectation that wins and ERAs are all that matters

Unreal.

The comments on Dave's Fangraphs post are similarly hilarious
I love TRUE baseball fans.

Those who don’t need stats. They know a good ballplayer when they see him.

Like Dayton Moore.
How do people who think ERA is good even find Fangraphs?
I'd love to get in on the humor...

Unfortunately both Fangraphs and USSM have apparently exploded.

Go to the M's Facebook page - it's *amazing*.
I am just glancing through those comments again..

It’s like a train wreck!

“our GM is a faggot and should be taken out back and shot”

Uhhh…..?

/[insert crazy homoerotic paean and offer our ourselves to GMZ]
this is a shitty trade u dumb ass fuckers
I just read that one too!
And they have to use their real names, too!

“damnit wat a dumb ass move go get some sluggers take from the phillies they seem to be buyers lets go get ur fuckin heads in the right direction stupid gm wow lets go get lik a ryan howard or somthing”

This is like the guy on a basketball message board who argued that UCLA just needed one player to put them over the top

or as he put it, “a Kobe Bryant type, someone who can shoot well, drive well, pass, play elite defense, get rebounds and make everyone around him better.”

Well, was he wrong?
not the point

does that player exist? Is that player available? Can a deal be made?

Fans of every baseball team want an Albert Pujols or a Roy Halladay. What most people that call in to talk radio don’t get is that you can’t expect to trade for Pujols-level talent with Washburn-level trade pieces.

That reminds me of the guy that starts off with one paper clip and winds up with a house.

That’s kind of how I view GMZ and the M’s. His red paper clip are the players he has to trade with when he arrived, almost as a separate entity from his drafts and minor league additions.

That was really meant as a joke.
I am having a very dense day today

That’s what I get for trying to work during my work day.

Was that a real one? Please tell me this is a direct quote, spelling and all

That is faaaaantastic.

After reading LL for this whole season

I find that I can’t read any other message boards that I used to because of people who write like this. I used to, but it just hurts my brains now. Thanks LL, thank you so very much.

I can't make stuff like that up.
That is pretty much the quote of the year
I think the best part is that he picked a guy who isn't even particularly good
Without looking, I bet he has a lot of RBI's.

Shows what you know, git ur haid out of ur ass

I thought in our more compassionate modern society

We no longer have to take them out back, they can be shot in the front yard just like everyone else

Rec'd for snide social commentary
Classic.

“Instead of everyone being upset about playoffs, think about this really quick. WE LOST 104 GAMES LAST YEAR! No one expected us to even be in the hunt. "

Oh don't I wish.

Seriously, though, that’s a pretty reasonable opinion.

Definitely a fairly reasonable opinion.

There was actually more reasonable opinion after it as well, I just liked the 104 games part.

Well now I'm dumber...
So I want to be the first to put this out there.

Odds of Washburn returning to Seattle for 2010?
0%

10%

25%

50%

75%

90%

Zero.

It isn’t happening.

Depends if he signs with an American League team or not
Do we play the east or the central?
Central

I’m guessing Chicago, St Louis and Milwaukee are coming here.

I want to add "firstbase" to the list of positions I've seen Albert Pujols play at Safeco Field

So far I’ve been able to cross off RF, LF, and SS in person, and 3B and 2B on tv

In this scenario LAAAA gets PIT/HOU/CIN, right?
Slightly more than zero

25%..he did credit Adair for ‘fixing’ him

10%

He’ll get a better deal from a dumber FO.

The chance is not zero because he and Boras know he benefits from Safeco and the defense.

I expect about 25%

He does like it here.

It all depneds on how far the Tigers get
No it doesn't
If the Tigers make the ALCS or the World Series and offer Wash an extension, he's going to have a hard time leaving
Not if someone else offers him more money
It sure helped with Freddy Garcia.
He is close to retirement, has a family, Detroit is not a place people want to live, and he can go after money or sign a sweetheart deal close to home (Milwaukee) or whatever.
If he maintains his current peformance level in Detroit he should be in line for a nice contract. That won't be with the M's.
ERA is not a measure of pitcher performance
For Boras it is.
By whatever measure you like, his performance level was good enough for teams to want him in a trade
No, the team run prevention when he was pitching was good enough for teams to want him

There is a huge difference

Perceived value is value, however you slice it
Right, but his perceived value is decoupled from his actual performance

So if he keeps up said performance he’s not actually very good.

Fair enough. I'll rephrase to say, "If he continues to be the starting pitcher during games his team wins."
I think lv's point is about how Wash's results translate to value on the trade market.
The ERA is not Washburn's result, is my point.
But the market doesn't really care
Which was lemonverbena's point, I think.
Yes

Weird disagreement.

Semantics, it seemed
Existentialism

If a tree falls in the forest, does Jarrod Washburn have trade value

Bill Hasselman is saying there's a pretty good chance!

Also, is 710 always like this?

No, usually worse.

The HERD.

He mailed it in.
That show sucks so much.
Hopefully 0%. We just got his projected production going forward in the form of French.

Why pay Washburn 8 million dollars next year, when that money can be used elsewhere to improve the club

Oh my!

August 18th, 19th, and 20th!!!

So who's next to go?

I wouldn’t mind moving Branyan as long as he re-signs next year. He could do us one more favor by bringing in a few good prospects. I wish we had known San Fran was giving away Alderson, maybe we could’ve made a deal.

Bullpen arms probably..
What wonderful news to wake up to!
I deem this trade good.
Heh
• Tigers get ace Washburn from M’s
Where's this from?
Headline from Foxsports.com
Please link your sources in this thread
Please shut the fuck up and kiss my balls
Of course ESPN gets Steve Phillips

to defend Detroit’s side of the trade.

Haha, was about to say the same thing.
Was Steve Phillips even a good GM?
Kazmir for Victor Zambrano!
I think that was Duquette.
No it was Phillips...
Wasn't it?
No, Duquette took over for Phillips and then made that deal..
Definitely Duquette
Which eventually culminated in this sub-thread

Perhaps the greatest long term return on a trade, of all time.

Z on Felix
General manager Jack Zduriencik told ESPN’s Peter Gammons that there was heavy interest in Mariners ace Felix Hernandez.

“I had calls,” Zduriencik told Gammons, “and I listen to everyone. But it would have taken too much to even discuss a realistic trade.”
I imagine those calls had some pretty hefty names being discussed.
It would have to seriously out-do a Halladay-type package.

Drabek, Taylor, Brown, Donald, Carrasco, Happ…

Agreed...Just because he is so young...
From Philly, you lead with Lee/Utley and go from there
Cliff Lee?

He wouldn’t be as interesting considering his contract has to be up soon, doesn’t it? Drabek/Happ would be better than Lee.

He has a 2010 option

and after that, we have the $$$ to extend him. He’s good enough to be plenty interesting.

But yes, I’d insist on Drabek, too. :)

The moon and the planets and everythin else in the solar system.
I do not like this no I do not

This is like when you go into a bar with your significant other and people immediately start trying pick them up. I know they aren’t going anywhere but still this is unnerving. I’m the jealous sort.

: ( : ( : ( : ( : ( : ( : ( : (
Jeff Sullivan: James – the current M’s front office hasn’t yet approached Felix to talk extension, but I imagine they’ll exchange numbers this offseason. I’m not real optimistic, though. If Bavasi hadn’t have been so stingy over a few million dollars a few years ago this whole thing could’ve been avoided.
When is Bill Bavasi going to stop shitting in our lunch?
But if you are secure in yourself

and you and your significant other haven’t had a bunch of drug-fueled threeways, then you are happy that she gets her attractiveness reaffirmed. And she sees that you are confident and that you trust her. Then, she comes home with you, feeling hot and a little buzzed, and fucks your brains out. Everybody wins!

Felix has thus far declined my requests for intercourse
I'm with you here, Robert.
Nice analogy.
Brignac, Escobar, Grienke, Pujols, Adam Jones, Mauer, Wright, Halladay, Lincecum, Sandoval, and Haren.

That would be a fair trade. All of them for Felix.

And money.
Yes, and money.

After they are all signed to 7-year contracts.

Maybe only 4 years for Halladay.

But they have to pick up for a personal trainer for Pablo.

He could pitch for a different team every night
Z: "Hello, Friedman? No on Longo + Crawford + cash? Oh, well I guess we have nothing to talk about."
You forgot Wade Davis or David Price
Yes. Felix Hernandez is OUR Evan Longoria, so why would we consider trading him for anything less?
I would takle Longoria for Felix straight up and do a backflip.
Robert would kill you dead before your feet hit the ground.
Are you frigging kidding me?
Nope

Have you seen Longoria’s contract?

I would take Longoria for Felix straight up in 2 seconds. He isn't making NEAR what he is worth and he's like an Adrian Beltre that can hit.
I think I would have to fly up to Seattle and burn Safeco to the ground if they traded Felix

Call me an irrational crazy person if you want.

You're an irrational crazy person!
No. You seem coldly rational and forward-thinking about this.

You’re not getting off on insanity.

Too much steel and concrete
I think there might be a way. I don't think the whole thing would burn to the ground, but I could seriously eff it up.
Crash an airplane into it
Junior hitting a GS home run to clinch a playoff series win should do it.
That would make me cry.
French needs a gimmicky nickname for one of his off-speed pitches.

The Bastille Bender

i say

Changes-Élysées
Freedom Fries.
Bureau de change?
The Maginot Line
More like Faginot line, amirite?
Or Vaginot line.
That was going to be my contribution

but then I realized it didn’t make any sense.

Kudos for typing it anyway.

Now that I think about it

It’s a shame that Beltre’s not French, because that nickname would be perfect for him. Just like the real Maginot Line, nothing’s getting past Beltre. It’s just a shame that the enemy had no problem going around it (i.e. going around Beltre by hitting the ball towards Yuniesky).

Yuni was the Belgian frontier :(
And anagrammer gives us:

Heckler Fun
Cheer Flunk
Rec He Flunk
Rec Elf Hunk
Luck Fern Eh
Le Ref Chunk

Le Chunk

A French twist on a Goonies reference!

Make him do the truffle shuffle before they let him out of the bulpen door
Elf Hunk, Rec

Almost homo enough for LL.

I thought his name was Lucas not Luke?
The Tickler.
Is this true about Beltre?

He said this to Jack Wilson?

Adrian had a few tips for new arrival Jack Wilson: "This is a bat,‘’ Beltre tells Wilson. "Use it to hit your weight and the Seattle fans will love you compared to what came previously.’’

Beltre is the best ever.

Holy shit that's AMAZING

Where is that from?

Beltre reads LL?!
Wow. Awesome. How can I personally rec Adrian Beltre?
Oh please re-sign Beltre.
This isn't a real quote

It’s a joke photo caption that Baker had in one of his recent posts.

I was looking for the source...

dang that would have been hysterical.

Holy crap!!
I hope this is more a Yuni slam than a :(edeno slam
Lets see

Doyle Alexander was 36 when the Braves traded him to the Tigers, Washburn is 34. Alexander pitched 206 innings that year, Washburn is on pace for 211. Washburn is on pace for 125 strikeouts, Alexander had 126 strikeouts the next year.

Yep it looks like Lucas French or Maurcio Robles have about a 90% chance to turn into a player about the caliber of John Smoltz

Can't argue with cold hard logic!
Washburn is two years younger, on pace for 5 more innings, and 1 less strikeout (which for Washburn works like golf, the less the better)

So let’s up that to 98%

Thank you Washburn for your contributions this year.

Please return your salary in full for the previous three.

Ya pays your money, ya takes your chances
French comes in for Washburn, Snell comes in for Olsen (hopefully) It's a good day, the rotation doesn't suffer at all.

And just by trading Jarrod Washburn, we know Jack Z could give a shit about ERA and probably reads Dave Cameron and LL.

We know that the Mariners front office reads Lookout Landing and USSM (that M's front office guy who made the fanshot and his brother's wedding this winter said so).

But GMZ didn’t need anyone outside the M’s organization to tell that trading Washburn was imperative.

That's awesome.

It’s just good to know he’s got that edge over the Detroit GM who obviously likes shiny things only.

I think we realized that Z doesn't care about ERA when he traded for Aardsma.
As long as we don't start calling frenchy 'baby wash'

I am good with this trade. Thanks for a great year Jarrod. So long… and thanks for all the fish.

From the BTF chat:

Jeff Sullivan: In honor of Jonah I’m actually wearing my Expos shirt right now.
Dave Cameron: In honor of Tony Benazard, I am not wearing a shirt.

I love happy Dave.

I wonder if he is swinging it around
Over his head, like a helicopter?
Seattle Mariners, come on and raise up, take your shirt off, twist it round your hand, spin it like a helicopter.
The image in my head is glorious.

Today is a great day.

Which is surprising, seeing how laid-back he usually is.
.

  [Comment From shakma]
Jeff or Dave: What will happen when Carlos Silva and Ian Snell meet for the first time

Dave Cameron: Silva will probably try to kiss him. For whatever reason, that’s his role on the team right now. Dugout kiss guy.

I don't think he is trying kiss them!
Over/under before Washburn throws G. Laird under a bus?

I’d say 5 starts before the bloom is off the rose.

Latest Baker blog says Robles was the key

Source calls him top-5 prospect in the system

Also has a link to a Detroit news commentary about how losing Robles could hurt.

Interesting.

Tigers are as thin of a system that you can get
Do I really have to work today? Fack.
Geoff Baker likes it.

Maybe many of the fans will breathe sigh of relief.

I can't believe the Tigers fans are so happy about this.

Makes me wonder if we could’ve finagled another player. But this was still a great trade for us.

Best to take a good deal than blow it trying for a great deal.

This is a good deal. Be happy.

I really, really want a hitter. But yeah, had to take it without risking blowing it. The cost of keeping Jarrod was too high.
This organization needs pitching depth.
And to announce the signing of Ackley.
Ackley and Poythress are a good start. I'm just sick of not bringing up a great hitter since... A-Rod?

Lopez has been the closest thing, unless I’m forgetting someone.

When was the last "great pitcher" we brought up? Felix.

Great players are rare.

I'm not upset about it.

I am happy.

Wait Softy loves this deal

Does not compute on any level ever. I have literally not ever been more confused.

There was a good caller on 710 that amazed me hearing that kind of stuff on the radio.
But Brock is still verbally stroking Washburn's penis.
Brock needs to stick to Football, he knows absolutly nothing about Baseball
It's funny when he forces an analogy that compares football to baseball
I cringe at the random contract numbers he throws out there for potential free agent deals.

You can almost see Salk giving him a “what the hell are you talking about” look.

Brock has his role in the baseball talk (playing casual fan devil's advocate type) and he's great at it.

He’s obviously not as good as Salk, but he’s not as clueless as he sounds. Honestly he’s impressed me almost as much as Salk.

Now a caller called Jack Z. "Jack Bavasi"
Did Salk let him have it?
Yes.
I like that Mike Salk is good at his job.
heh.

Salk: Did you like the Bedard trade?
Angry Caller who hates “unproven” players: Yes, until he started getting hurt all the time.

Yeah, but Salk and Brock still dont like the trade.
Hopefully Salk gets on LL during the commercials
I like how Bavasi is joining the ranks of Mariner cursewords

alongside Woodward (not Chris), Schooler, Ayala, and A-Rod

Wait, really?

That…does not seem right.

So now that O. Cabrera's a Twin,

is there anyone the A’s could possibly sell? Maybe Jack Cust?

Michael Wuertz

Adam Kennedy, Bobby Crosby (if there is interest), Raja Davis,

I forgot about Crosby.

He’d make sense, given his contract (up at the end of the year, millions).
Would anyone really want Rajai Davis?

And if they want to dump their bullpen, maybe someone would take Russ Springer.

Their only big-money contracts are:
Chavez, Crosby, Giambi, Duchsherer (little interest, I’d guess)
Ellis, (won’t trade)
Kennedy, Springer (could still leave)

I love that thanks to Jack Z

I no longer live in fear on my birthday

I'd say happy birthday, but I know it already is. I'll save it for next year.
Not so fast.

EVERYBODY HIDE TORII'S COMING
You never know. The day's not over. Z might dump Lopez for a real Second Baseman.
Branyan, Morrow, Batista, Lowe.

I have to leave to run errands in a few minutes. The above are names I would not mind returning to find that we have traded.

White?
We could dump our whole bullpen this morning and I'd be okay with it.

(as long as we got something for DA)

I was just kidding around with seattlebruin

It would make me sad to see Branyan go. I know we’re not going to the playoffs, but he sure makes games funner to watch.

I too love that man and would hate to see him go.

Does he have much of a trade value? It seems like it would be more valuable on the 2010 roster, rather than trading him

We'd have to resign him first.

Honestly though, I don’t expect him to have much of a trade value, being that he’s sat out practically all week.

Wilson would love to get Freddy Sanchez ...
I hope French is cosiderably better then Olson

That’s a lot of balls in the air

Jack, you totally redeemed yourself!

I am so sorry I ever doubted you.

So, is Robles>Lorin?

Is that even a fair comparison?

That's the impression I'm getting.
Yes. He's pitching at a higher level with success and he's 2 years younger
Delayed reaction since I was on the road, but

WEEEEEEE I LOVE YOU GMZ

Brock thinks now they have no chance to compete over the next 60 days.

And somehow they would have with one of the top-5 pitchers in baseball?

VETERAN PRESENCE IS EVERYTHING YOU FOOL
Boy that sure is the theme of a lot of comments and callers.
WITHOUT VETERAN PRESENCE THE M'S MIGHT AS WELL BE PLAYING CHECKERS
Belief system, belief system, belief system, belief system, belief system.
Compete for what?

I swear to god a football player can boil everything down to a Hail Mary pass for the win.

I think he is the only one who thinks

a Felix/Wash 1-2 punch is sooo great. He acts like there is no way Washburn regresses back to his career norm

The only one?

Hardly.

Well maybe mainstream Seattle Mariner fans.

I just laugh when he says “Going into next year putting Washburn behind Felix, you know what you have”

Oh, we know what we have alright.
This is the guy that is educating many young Seattle fans on baseball.
So, that's it right? we're done?

or can they still announce something? Cause if we’re holding on to Branyan there is every reason to think he’s staying here another year or two.

It's 1 p.m. local time..

Still have 2 hours left

Deadline to file trade paperwork with the league is 1PM PT, so theoretically there's still time

dammit Bruin you and your fast little fingers.

My bad, sorry Sundevil

I’m just conditioned to see seattlebruin

YES!

The confusion continues!

I am not the only one
Oh I thought it was 1pm eastern

sweet thanks

Plus, sometimes trades somehow get announced after the deadline.

I’d say by game time today, everything will probably be final.
Until the August 31 deadline.

Bedard can still move via waiver trade, no?

He’s owed some money and is a bit of a risk healthwise so they could try to sneak him through that way if he can some back for a bit. Not that I think he’d bring back much, but whatever comes back need to be better than a sandwich pick and we’re cool.

I'd bet someone would take Bedard off waivers.

If he’s healthy, he’s owed about $3 mill.

Then we either work out a deal with them

or pull him back. No biggie.

Yeah, every team does this, right?

Like that time the Padres accidentally got that high-priced reliever?

So can we say, so far, after the Washburn trade,

that thus far the moves being made in total is a plus?

Yeah.

I feel better about the Snell/Wilson trade now in conjuction with this.

I don't want to say the Wash trade is a fleecing,

but holy crap did we get a lot for 2 months of Washburn.

its a fleecing

think of it in terms of marginal wins. Washburn gives Detroit maybe 1.5 at best the rest of the way. French, even if he’s bad, will be worth six at least over his time here (I’m taking kind of a worst case scenario 1 WAR/season here) plus there’s Robles. Hell, if we put French in the pen and he pitches well we’ve still won.

The only way this could be justified is marginal wins cost more in a playoff race, but even so the Tigers have improved only by a fraction of a win by adding Wash.

That's it, you've pushed me over the edge,

it’s a fleecing.

Did you watch last night's game?

We need French in the rotation.

I know, I'm just saying that even if he completely bombs he'll still give us more value than Washburn to the Tigers
What discount factor is applied to the value of a future win?
That's a non sequitur

because French replaces Washburn. Snell replaces Olson.

I was replying to:

“Hell, if we put French in the pen and he pitches well we’ve still won.”

I don't know how 'safe' a prospect this Robles guy is

but the fact that we have a solid ML back end starter for the next several years makes the loss of Lorin Probanic etc pretty easy to bear. Remember, we still have Ramirez and Pineda. The way I see it is the major league club has gotten a good deal better, a little of our low minors SP depth has been sacrificed for AAA/AAAA starting depth, and the only valuable player we’ve surrendered is Clement.

Jack has been kicking ass and taking names.

Im still holding out hope that Aumont goes back to the rotation.
I don't see why these two trades get grouped together.

There’s no clear link between them, except maybe Robles=the three minors arms we dealt.
It’s hard to find any fault in the Washburn trade, but easy to question the Snell deal.

I don't know if Goose was so much connecting the trades,

just saying that what we got back for Wash definitely counter-balances the fact that we overpaid a bit of Snell/Wilson. In total it ends up being a positive.

Salk just can't balance what he sees as the "buy" mode of the WIlson trade vs the "sell" mode of the Wash trade.
Because heaven forbid a team look at itself from all angles and improve both now and later
Long term?

Something for nothing with Washburn? At 2 months left on his contract… I don’t know it appears to be kind of obvious

Yeah it really sucks when you try to see a shade of grey in the black-and-white-world doesn't it?
I meant the sum of everything equals long term.

I’m starting to think from the comments that this Salk guy wants the M’s to compete for the playoffs this year.

Bingo.

Altogether this has been a successful trade deadline for the team(assuming we don’t do anything else in the next 90 minutes).

I think you have to link them together because I think it's fairly obvious that Zduriencik has a plan.
Ted Kieth is retarded.

Seriously.

That throwing the white towel line bugs the crap out of me.

Z would have to leverage the minor league system to get the players necessary to gain serious ground. If the kind of players necessary are even available, and even then the M’s future would still be in the hands of the Angels, they still have to lose games for us to gain ground. He starts chasing playoffs this year he’s throwing away wins in the future

A lot of people don't really understand how big of a deficit 8 games is to make up over 2 teams, even if this was like May.
Caller who thinks they sold too early-- why, look, the Angels are underdogs in Minnesota tonight
So who takes Wash's roster spot?
Snell or French.
French is joing the team enroute, per Drayer, and likely will get a start this weekend
I'm guess Snell takes Washburn's spot and French takes Olsen's spot.
Yeah, I expect both of them will be in the rotation shortly.
Yeah

For now, French will stay in the bigs, Snell will stay in AAA.

Huh?

Not likely Snell stays in AAA — not the way Olson’s last couple starts have gone.

I expect Snell on Sunday
I guess that's French's day to pitch too
Is this why Snell wasn't rushed to Tacoma?
Robles was born in Valencia, Venezuela

Awesome.

Any idea who Boston sent to Cleveland for V Mart?
Can you use the general deadline thread for this?
So why wasn't Robles on any prospect lists or anything?

Can’t find him, and he seems like quite a talent. Was he just too young or was something keeping him off BA’s/John Sickels lists?

Numbers last year weren't all that good. He's blown up this year.
Well, Buster Olney says the Tigers made a good trade...

and calls Wash the “best pitcher in the AL over the last two months besides Mark Buerhle.”
Second thoughts anyone?

(I hope no one says yes)
Yes

If my first thought is, “I love this trade,” my second thought is, "This is why I don’t go to Buster Olney for analysis.

Luke French has a decent chance of pitching better in the the last 2 months of the season than Washburn.

That’s all I’ll say.

Summary for those that skipped to the end:

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!

The more I think about this trade the better it sounds.

I am so so amazed at the 180 degree turn this organization has pulled. It feels so foreign, and so good, to have faith in the front office. I am just in awe. I’m going to Griffey bobblehead night next Friday and I think I’m just gonna make a sign that says “Thank you Jack Zduriencik.”
