It's entirely possible Matthew was pulling your chain there good sir
The fact that this trade does not vault the M’s into contention does not in the least mean it wasn’t a good trade. We unloaded a crappy pitcher that had basically no trade value for two extremely good young players, which speaks very well of Z’s trading ability.
Now how the hell can ERA be such a crappy stat? Is it not the best bottom line measure of how many runs ya gotta score to beat the guy on a typical night? Call me ig’nat, but what’s the defect in the methodology here?
Langerhans, there’ve been fishes in the ocean . . . .
, a pitcher does not have such control over how batters hit against him that the amount of runs that he gives up can be solely contributed to the pitcher. Lot’s of other things can influence runs being given up, including the strength of the lineup, the ballpark the pitcher is playing in, and especially the defense behind the pitcher. Also, “earned” and “un-earned” runs at times is fairly arbitrary.
As a team measure, ERA is a pretty good stat. As far as measuring a pitcher’s abilities, ERA is definitely not a good stat.
-hits allowed. Research shows that pitchers have very little, if any, control over whether a batted ball in play will go for a hit or not. It is very dependent on the quality of defense behind the pitcher
-errors. A subjective decision by a scorekeeper and dependent on him/her and the pitcher’s defense
-the ball park. Are ERAs in Coors and Safeco equivalent? No.
-the league. Are ERAs in the NL and AL equivalent? No.
ERA accounts for none of those things. It’s a misleading stat. Use FIP or tRA.
Catches the motherfucking baseball. Must be able to perform the catch with men running towards you at full speed. Must also be able to catch said ball with a mask on your face and be able to block people from touching your plate.
I AM IN SUCH A GOOD MOOD

There’s no need to hit your nuts over this. Go over to Fangraphs and let Dave Cameron calm you down.

Although USSM being down made me realize there had been a trade announcement in the first place

I guarantee the general public hates this trade as much as they liked the trade for Wilson.

Does this make the Mariners the favorite to win the AL West in 2010 or 2011?

No.
Matthew - July 31, 2009
Maybe 2012 or 2013 then?
Xeifrank - July 31, 2009
The Mariners are now the 2013 AL West favorites, yes.
Matthew - July 31, 2009
I think you have to worry about the 2013 A's. The free agent moves Billy Beane said they'd make in 2012 are going to make them a threat.

:) Thanks.
Glad to see such a happy bunch of fans. I wonder what it would be like if the Ms had hauled in an ever bigger fish!

He has a sub 3 ERA, how can you say he didn't have a high trade value?
d0nkey - July 31, 2009
Because ERA is not a good indicator of talent level and most every FO in the league knows that now

-errors. A subjective decision by a scorekeeper and dependent on him/her and the pitcher’s defense
