Our man in T-Town comes through with a pair of worthwhile tidbits.
1. The rotation after the break:
Morrow
Felix
Wash
Bedard
That is followed by an off day and Divish parrots Dave Cameron by mentioning that one of Vargas (probably) or Olson is likely headed to Tacoma with the other to the bullpen. Yay for another bench bat coming up shortly. Another interesting question is where Ryan Rowland-Smith fits in this whole mess. He was fantastic last night in Tacoma and reached 107 pitches, so he seems healthy. We have a logjam in the rotation now. Trade Wash. Do it.
2.
Yuni Betancourt will be in Tacoma tonight to play with the Rainiers at Cheney Stadium. He will start at second base and play five innings. He'll play seven innings tomorrow at short and probably play another game at second base before the Mariners reevaluate his situation.
To manager Don Wakamatsu's knowledge, Betancourt has never played second base, but he thinks its necessary for versatility.
That is interesting to hear. It certainly reads as if Betancourt is by no means guaranteed his starting short stop job back after he returns from the disabled list.

Trade Wash and call up RRS.
Do it now.

Didn't Betancourt pretty much play 2B a lot in AAA?
Or am I getting he and Lopez confused.
According to BBCube, he’s played 11 games at 2B, and I presume that includes the minors so “a lot” is pretty much wrong.

I feel bad Yuni is losing his job due to injury
but thats life in an organization with as much minor league middle infield talent as the Mariners have.

I don't feel bad in the least
he never would have lost said job if not for the injury, and he desperately needed to lose the job, so thank you human physical frailty!

So which bench bat comes up?
Wakamatsu seemed pretty big on getting Carp regular ABs, so maybe he stays in Tacoma.
waldo rojas - July 8, 2009
Shelton most likely.

Looks like there's room on the 40-man, so...

.
Well yeah, we’re all set at SS

Bearskin Rugburn - July 8, 2009
I would expect Jack Z is exploring a trade for a serviceable SS

So when do we sign BJ Ryan?
tait644 - July 8, 2009
I believe Yuni played some semi-regular 2B in Cuba
Can’t find the article now that referenced it though…granted that was a long time ago.
appleshampoo - July 8, 2009
I believe this is correct.

“He was considered the fastest second baseman in the Cuban leagues and the star of the Villa Clara team.”

85-87 consistently per Churchill...
Touched 88 a bit. But, yeah, it’s still down.
