You're going to make Ian sad...
I Lick Squirrels - August 13, 2009
Poor Wilson
Gets a -2.6%, and this will probably his last homer as a Mariner.

I'm sure there's a very desperate secret illegal imitation Mexican league team out there
who could use him.
Karma Police - August 13, 2009
Snell had an interesting post game interview.
Paraphrasing, he said the NL isn’t as much of a fastball league as the AL, and the AL has more power hitters.
Also, kind of minced about when it came to facing the Yankees, acknowledged them as being ridiculously good hitters. Didn’t Wak take Felix aside early in the season for saying something similar?
Kermit. - August 13, 2009
So then Snell should be on the verge of taking off!
Realistically, we probably shouldn’t expect the turnaround to happen overnight. If it happens, I’d look for it after a long offseason of rest and relaxation.
Jeff Sullivan - August 13, 2009
I totally agree with this.
There’s going to be a bit of a recovery period for Snell. Adair will take care of him.
kevin_ess - August 13, 2009
As long as fans don't start booing him.
The idiots.
Coach Owens - August 13, 2009
If Snell can't get over being booed after being this awful twice in a row, there's not much hope for him.
Aaron Campeau - August 13, 2009
There's hope.
He goes to your show, gets pumped up, and destroys people. Make this happen.
kevin_ess - August 14, 2009
The fans have to give him a break.
His emotional state isn’t exactly that strong.
Coach Owens - August 14, 2009
We should have told this to the Yankees and Rays.
Seriously though, players get booed and if it bothers Snell (not sure if it does) then he better start pitching better.
MFAN - August 14, 2009
He sounded pretty solid, the usual comments about battling etc, etc.
I just recalled Wak taking Felix by the ear in May or so for giving credit to the other team’s line up, but I couldn’t find any reference via google. I’m not sure if I’m remembering situation correctly.
Kermit. - August 14, 2009
You're right,
but it was about his personality in the dugout. Apparently he was not “looking” like the leader he should while joking around and whatever else he was doing.
kevin_ess - August 14, 2009
The one I remember
was saying he had no answer for Joe Mauer and admitting that he gets owned by him. Wak definitely gave him an earful for that one, something to the tune of you’re one of the best pitchers, you can get him out just like any other elite batter.
The more general comments were maybe about the Angels…I vaguely remember it too.
appleshampoo - August 14, 2009
Look, all I'm saying is that booing can only make it worse.
You ever hear about the case of Rudy York? That’s a perfect example.
Coach Owens - August 14, 2009
I'm not sure it's even an issue, it doesn't seem like the booing is hurting Snell.
MFAN - August 14, 2009
Joh sure seems to be!
Coach Owens - August 14, 2009
What?
I don’t know if that was phrased correctly. Regardless, I’m sure booing has nothing to do with Joh’s struggles or the fact that the pitchers don’t like him.
BrettJMiller - August 14, 2009
And again, if he can't deal with it he's not long for the game.
Aaron Campeau - August 14, 2009
I heard the fans clapped for him when he left. Was that just clapping for pulling him?
JAH - August 14, 2009
Did Snell really do that poorly?
He threw 62% strikes (while getting boned by the umpire), the first couple runs came off a bloop double and a wild pitch, and the last two baserunners that scored seemed to get on as a result of letting him pitch too long. With slightly different luck (and if he was pulled after 6 with a better rested bullpen to back him up) he probably ends up having allowed just the 3 runs with a decent number of ground balls and swinging strikes.
Malcontent1 - August 13, 2009
I agree with you!
Jeff Sullivan - August 14, 2009
Were the HR balls he gave up in bad locations?
d0nkey - August 14, 2009
Yes
Jeff Sullivan - August 14, 2009
I don't even want to know what happened.
I’ll pretend today was an off day and we begin a three games series tomorrow.
Wilder. - August 13, 2009
So how did Swenney have more of a positive contribution than Hannahan?
Coach Owens - August 13, 2009
Didn't notice that, so I had to check fangraphs, since that doesnt seem to make sense
Sweeney’s ABs
Walk (+.040), Fly Out (-.007), strikeout (-.002), fly out (.000)
Hannahan’s ABs
Walk (+.022), fly out (-.006), single (.000)
Karma Police - August 13, 2009
I find that stupid.
Coach Owens - August 13, 2009
Yeah thats my problem with WPA
It’s interesting to look at during and after a game, but in a blowout like this things get skewed.
Karma Police - August 13, 2009
It's not a predictive stat.
It is designed to award in game contribution. A home run when you are down by 400 means absolutely zero to the team winning. If your team is down 500 to 0 after the top of the first, and a player on the home team has a 7 home run game, their runs made no difference to the outcome because the game was already lost.
It’s not really designed to show how good a player was. Only their contribution to winning.
CapSea - August 14, 2009
er... to the game's outcome, I mean.
CapSea - August 14, 2009
Or the entire point of WPA
Graham MacAree - August 14, 2009
We win tomorrow 3-2.
Arod back, but Griffey shows his clutch again and say’s “fuck your Madonna mouth herpes,” and hits the game winning dinger.
Griffey goes on to pitch in late innings and beans Jeter in the balls, tearing his soul.
kevin_ess - August 13, 2009
This is pretty good, I like the herpes comment!
Sam Regens - August 14, 2009
Jeter's soul is in his balls?
Sundevil78 - August 14, 2009
reply fail
I blame this on the Madonna mouth herpes
Sundevil78 - August 14, 2009
Red me, bitch.
And you’re right.
kevin_ess - August 14, 2009
I did, but only because I felt threatened.
Sundevil78 - August 14, 2009
Wrong.
Jeter has no balls.
I Lick Squirrels - August 14, 2009
I hope that's not the case.
Yeah, he gave up a lot of runs, but this is the Yankees, and the walks, Ks, and groundballs were all pretty solid. I don’t want him to get disillusioned here. I still think he can be our #2.
DAMellen - August 14, 2009
Ian Snell will come around
Baker
ThundaPC - August 14, 2009
I was at the M's game today.
It was depressing and the fan interference thingy pissed me off especially since he threw it back. Though I started watching our bullpen and it was weird. At the beginning of the game they were in a group hug or something then Aardsma later in the game started poking the rest of the bullpen dudes in the crotch area with a pole I GUESS he was checking to see if they had cups or something but it was awkward I wish I had pictures. THERE WERE FIREWORKS WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Slurvey - August 14, 2009
Shoulda killed that guy.
I Lick Squirrels - August 14, 2009
I missed that play, what happened?
d0nkey - August 14, 2009
I saw this the last week in KC
There were smacks on the ass also. By the time I had my camera out all I got was a picture of them in a huddle having a pep talk/prayer/circlejerk.
The best was where Lowe(I think) seriously went after Adair wanting to touch his balls.
So I think this is a semi-regular thing, nothing in relation to Beltre’s condition.
hcoguy - August 14, 2009
Technically it is not fan interference unless the fan puts their mitt into the field of play.
In that area it is virtually impossible for a fan under 6’6" to actually reach over the pit and into the field.
Ichiro had his mitt extended beyond the wall and the fan should have seen that and pulled back. However, looking at the video it appears he did not realize Ichiro was even there. Serious bummer and all, but we were taking it in the shorts no matter what.
Sec 108 - August 14, 2009
That shit drives me nuts.
Fans sitting in the front row should know their role and be paying attention to the game. It’s just a baseball. It’s not like it’s a record-breaking HR ball or anything.
d0nkey - August 14, 2009
It is not as easy as you assume to be aware of that.
I have sat in the front row for almost 17 years now so it is second nature for me, but it took me a couple of years before I was comfortable taking my eyes off of the ball to survey my surroundings. Most people who attend games are not used to taking all of that in so quickly.
Sec 108 - August 14, 2009
I see your point.
Wouldn’t there be 20 people within earshot distance to say ‘hey hold up’?
d0nkey - August 14, 2009
There definitely should have been.
Sec 108 - August 14, 2009
Rules for fan interference to help your team:
It seems pretty simple, always try to catch a ball hit by your team. If the other team hit it (close foul ball or close HR), don’t try to catch it and give your team’s fielder a chance to catch it. Is that about right? I think DMZ had a paragraph or chapter on this in his book.
appleshampoo - August 14, 2009
That is how I approach it.
Sec 108 - August 14, 2009
NONONONONONONO
No Snell in KC please.
ratherfantastic - August 14, 2009
I love how after the Yuni trade, you guys just lurk here all the time.
JamMasterJesus - August 14, 2009
They're getting to know the 2011 team.
CapSea - August 15, 2009
I was wondering what the Win Expectancy Chart would look like for the game two nights ago.
Would it just stay just about at .5 the entire time until a big spike at the very end?
Kenny Knows Sports - August 14, 2009
Not exactly.
You can see it here. The spikes are more drastic in extra innings since even coming close to scoring a run would have a pretty big impact on win expectancy. What you’re describing might happen if every inning was 3 up, 3 down until the final one, but both teams put runners on base several times.
I Lick Squirrels - August 14, 2009
Oh, I didn't know that was on Fangraphs.
Thanks! Now I will know where to go for that info.
Kenny Knows Sports - August 14, 2009
You know that I posted it, right
Jeff Sullivan - August 14, 2009
Really?
Poochie - August 14, 2009
Oh crap, sorry.
There was just so much stuff between the White Sox series and the Yankees series that I thought it would be on the first page so I scrolled down quickly.
Kenny Knows Sports - August 14, 2009
I like Snell's attitude
He will be fine once he settles in.
Yoyogi - August 14, 2009
Ovet at Examiner.com
someone has culled some Ichiro quotes about the fan intereference
"I thought I had it. It was disappointing. I went to make the catch despite not having fun (from the one-sided game)," Ichiro told Japanese reporters according to Nikkan Sports, "although the batter and the fielder understood to show off (for the fans), the fan apparently didn’t understand."
msb - August 14, 2009
Thanks
Amidst a terrible game for us, that play would’ve been a bright spot for the home fans indeed.
Ichiro rocks.
Sam Regens - August 14, 2009
About Sweeney
with the way they’re swinging the bat now, I would personally like to see Griffey in the lineup against lefties also instead of Sweeney.
(This is just the opinion of a guy mad about Jr. and not stat oriented).
Sam Regens - August 14, 2009
And I know Jr. is a husk of his former self,
but is there really any other option sitting on the bench right now to replace Sweeney at DH (against lefties)?
