Per some Twitters from Shannon Drayer and Matt Pitman (one t?), Adrian Beltre will not require surgery, so he might be back sometime around September 1st and in fact, as far as Elias goes, him spending more time on the DL actually pushes his further up the list toward Type A status, which only helps the Mariners.
Erik Bedard is not so good news as the surgery revealed an inflamed bursa sac (no surprise) and a torn labrum. The labrum was repaired, but we know how those respond to surgeries (not overly well) and even if so, Bedard is done with baseball for the next six months, meaning at best, he returns to full strength around this time in 2010.

So will Bedard go the Ben Sheets route of sitting out the entire year without a contract?
Or do you think he’ll go Pedro-style and get picked up mid-July with a chance to be added for the stretch run?

RIP Erik Bedard Era 2008-2009
Time to move on..
Part of me (the stupid part) was still holding out hope that he might be in the rotation next year on the cheap. This definately clarifies the arbitration situation.
CMC_Stags - August 14, 2009
I'm still hoping for Bedard to sign with us.
Slurvey - August 14, 2009
The sad part is...
We never saw a 100% healthy Bedard. Not even for one start. It’s one thing we got hosed on the trade, but it’s something entirely different when the return had basically zero impact for us. RIP, indeed.

Incentive-laden contract sounds good to me
It’s not as if our rotation will be overflowing with talented pitchers next year.
Fuckmikereilly - August 14, 2009
Secretly I hope we sign Harden and Sheets too so we can have the most oft injured rotation.
Slurvey - August 14, 2009
It saddens me that I will never see his beautiful curve again in a Seattle jersey.
EnglishMariner - August 14, 2009
You and me both, sweet cheeks.

LIEBER CONTRACT
Jeff Sullivan - August 14, 2009
I wish they would play Cher's hit song
“If I Could Turn Back Time” whenever Bedard took the mound, and when he bats in the NL parks.
Yoyogi - August 14, 2009
The words really apply to Bedard's situation, take a look
If I could turn back time
If I could find a way I’d take back those words that hurt you and you’d stay
I don’t know why I did the things I did I don’t know why I said the things I said
Pride’s like a knife it can cut deep inside
Words are like weapons they wound sometimes.
I didn’t really mean to hurt you I didn’t wanna see you go I know I made you cry, but baby
[Chorus:]
If I could turn back time
If I could find a way
I’d take back those words that hurt you
And you’d stay
If I could reach the stars
I’d give them all to you
Then you’d love me, love me
Like you used to do
If I could turn back time
My world was shattered I was torn apart
Like someone took a knife and drove it deep in my heart
You walked out that door I swore that I didn’t care
But I lost everything darling then and there
Too strong to tell you I was sorry
Too proud to tell you I was wrong
I know that I was blind, and ooh…
[Chorus]
Ooohh
If I could turn back time
If I could turn back time
If I could turn back time
ooh baby
I didn’t really mean to hurt you
I didn’t want to see you go
I know I made you cry
Ooohh
[Chorus #2]
If I could turn back time
If I could find a way
I’d take back those words that hurt you
If I could reach the stars
I’d give them all to you
Then you’d love me, love me
Like you used to do
If I could turn back time (turn back time)
If I could find a way (find a way)
Then baby, maybe, maybe
You’d stay
[to fade]
Reach the stars
If I could reach the stars

You know what works a lot better than this?

So to summarize:
Beltre’s sack’s sick but surg’ry’s not a must;
Bedard’s sac’s fixed but shredded shoulders suck!
PositivePaul - August 14, 2009
This is awesome.
kevin_ess - August 14, 2009
Why does Spending time on the DL make Beltre more likely to be type A? That seems silly.
joof - August 14, 2009
I'm wondering the same thing -- can someone shed some light on this?
Yoyogi - August 14, 2009
He gets credit for what he maybe theoretically possibly would have done.
Aaron Campeau - August 14, 2009
Awesome!
So what are the chances he moves up to type A status?
Yoyogi - August 14, 2009
Anyone have a link to the most recent Elias ranking updates?
How close is Beltre?
ARock - August 14, 2009
Thank god. I'll take a bruise ball over a torn ball and surgery any day.
See you soon, Beltre. Red will sleep well tonight.
kevin_ess - August 14, 2009
Vaya con cuddles, Bedard. And yay for Beltre's balls!
royalcurve - August 14, 2009
Yes hoooooorrrrrrrayyyyyyy Balls!
I hope Adrian picks an appropriate At Bat song when he comes off the DL.
My pick: AC/DC’s Big Balls.
Sundevil78 - August 14, 2009
Erik Bedard and "full strength"
Two things that never really go together.
sanford_and_son - August 14, 2009
I'm glad most of this is wrong...
… but the Bedard part still makes me go>:(
eponymous_coward - August 14, 2009
What about Jack?
Which Wilson’ll be at shortstop the rest of the week?
DAMellen - August 14, 2009
If I knew something, I would have posted it.
Matthew - August 14, 2009
FSN says Jack back Tuesday.
