That move was well hidden.
I do not think anyone has ever been really excited with Doug Fister, but he we are. The 25-year-old righty spent the last two seasons in Double-A West Tennessee where he was unexciting. Promoted to Tacoma this year, he has turned some corners, entirely in the never walking anyone department. Fister is a moderate groundballer who does not miss bats but also tries to never miss the zone either. It is rather hard to fathom that he is not a Twin.
Someone with a scouting report will fill us in on his pitches, but for now... yeah... okay.

It's the new Dickey time.
Eyebrows - August 7, 2009
Oh boy
Aaron Campeau - August 7, 2009
So Fister is the new 5th starter?
I’m going to next Tuesdays game against the White Sox and I’m pretty sure Vargas was scheduled to pitch that day. So will Fister pitch in Vargas’ place?

Good for Doug
He’s really tall, and uses that to get a downward plane on a FB. Not much there in terms of offspeed stuff.
Dave C’s referred to him as a tall Jakubauskas, and I think that’s as good a pithy description as there is. He’s going to pound the zone with a FB at 90-93, not walk anyone, and hope the fielders make plays.
I’m happy for him; seemed like a nice guy.

H/T Deanna...
The original scouting report from 2006…
Amazingly I didn’t catch him in Tacoma this year, so go by Marc’s comments above…

The Fister Pounds the Zone
This is going to be fun.
CapSea - August 7, 2009
That 'Striker' gag from Airplane would have made for some incredible cinema if his name was Fister.
Eyeball Kid - August 7, 2009
Anything but Vargas and Olson
Sounds good to me. Even if his stuff isn’t anything special. At the very least we may get to see Wilson, Gutz, etc make some really awesome plays with all the balls in play.
Yoyogi - August 7, 2009
Haven't seen anything yet on Vargas being optioned
but Chris Woodward was acquired by the Red Sox off waivers this afternoon
frelled - August 7, 2009
What does Jeff think about this name?
It’s a little more in your face than Koplove
basebliman - August 7, 2009
does he have small hands?
frelled - August 7, 2009
No, but he carries lots of lube
Sundevil78 - August 7, 2009
Vargas is a rule 5 pick, isn't he?
I thought they needed to be kept on the big league 25 man roster for a full season?
Either way, excited to see Fister (sort of), since it’ll be a charge of pace.
AtomicGarden - August 7, 2009
No
He came over as part of the JJ trade
Graham MacAree - August 7, 2009
That's right, thanks.
AtomicGarden - August 7, 2009
Vargas came over in the Putz trade.
Also, he spent some time at Tacoma earlier in the season.
So no, he’s not a rule 5 pick.

LATE
I Lick Squirrels - August 7, 2009
I'm more excited for this than I should be.
Doug was on my high school baseball team, and is actually a really nice guy. Random fact Dusty Ryan who plays C for the Tigers was also on the team, and we still finished close to 20 games under .500.
CstSnow - August 7, 2009
So another part of the JJ trade flails.
Fin - August 7, 2009
I don't think the expectations of him were necessarily reasonable.
I’d take what he did out of a guy that did not pitch at all last season due to injury.
JY - August 7, 2009
If Vargas never throws another pitch in the majors, we still come out big winners.
Teej - August 7, 2009
And he's still only 26 years old.
Coach Owens - August 7, 2009
what
Poochie - August 7, 2009
Please be good Doug.
‘Cause I want a Fister jersey so F’ing bad.
thewyrm - August 7, 2009 via mobile
will he have an inverted number 7 on his back?
frelled - August 7, 2009
I'm hoping he'll get #69
I Lick Squirrels - August 7, 2009
#58
Probably done so just to disappoint you.
JY - August 7, 2009
Can't complain, although Vargas at Safeco has been a good match
results wise. I think his peripherals are better at home in regards to strikeouts, less walks, and all those balls in play have found the gloves there to the tune of a 2.75 ERA as opposed to his 7+ road ERA. And Im only using ERA to point out the results. He’s obviously helped bigtime bySafeco and has proven to be respectable at home.

A Fister-Johnson battery sounds interesting…

Terminator X - August 7, 2009
I bet these jokes will all be new, fresh and entertaining to Doug.

Pessimistic Optimist - August 8, 2009
Fister sounds like "fist her" which is a sexual term meaning to put one's fist in another person's (or one's own) vagina
This is funny to me and many others
Dewey N - August 7, 2009
Oh dear how rude of me I seem to have ruined the subtlety of the joke
Dewey N - August 7, 2009
My goodness, but it DOES sound similar, doesn't it?
How unfortunate…. or fortunate, depending upon one’s perspective on such activities!
marc w - August 8, 2009
There is in such activity a fister and a fistee.
Yes that is the technical term.
ignacio - August 8, 2009
And of course, in desperate times, often the fister is also the fistee.
seamariners85 - August 8, 2009
How do you feel about being fisted to death?
Kirk - August 8, 2009
Bruised.
CapSea - August 9, 2009
It doesn't have to be a vagina.
