Fister, you continually surprise me.
I hope you are for real.
Sinking Away - September 1, 2009
I love Doug Fister.
I can now get his jersey without being vulgar.
Kirk - September 1, 2009
Can someone explain to me how in the heck Morales got so good?
Two years ago he hit like Rey Ordonez, and last year he spends most of the year in AAA raking, but sucks in limited time in the bigs. Is this a lucky year or is this who he really is?
Yoyogi - September 1, 2009
He had a wOBA of .341 in 2007.
Aaron Campeau - September 1, 2009
Also, he had a .196 BABIP last season.
Aaron Campeau - September 1, 2009
He's only 26 and has long been highly regarded
Jeff Sullivan - September 1, 2009
He's never been close to this good
His career minor league line was .333/.375/.529, which is good, but that translated to a .264/.296/.406 MLE. He’s shattering that right now.
vivaelpujols - September 1, 2009
He has an unsustainably high BABIP but I think the point is that it's not like it's surpising he's hitting well.
Aaron Campeau - September 1, 2009
Thanks for the responses, guys
Yoyogi - September 1, 2009
It's .332 this year, which isn't *that* high
Most of it is that his ISO is .284, which is fucking ridiculous.
vivaelpujols - September 1, 2009
I have to imagine that he's at or has exceeded his power peak
He doesn’t really hit the most impressive home runs.
Jeff Sullivan - September 1, 2009
Kind of like an infielder on our team!
seattlebruin - September 1, 2009
Branyan.
vivaelpujols - September 1, 2009
He has an elephant in his room
PDXTai - September 1, 2009
.
msb - September 1, 2009
I know this was in the game thread, but this is always enjoyable.
Wilder. - September 1, 2009
I'll stop now.
msb - September 1, 2009
Wait, no!
I love it!
Wilder. - September 2, 2009
Is Johjima maybe getting the starts for Fister because he's got the best arm between our catchers?
I was just thinking about Fister and his off speed pitches, especially against a team with a reputation for running like the Angels.
Kermit. - September 1, 2009
Interesting point
From the ESPN game recap: “Seattle part-time C Kenji Johjima threw out Figgins trying to steal second in the first inning. It was Johjima’s 18th caught stealing, with only 16 stolen bases against him, a 53-percent success rate. The major league average is 29 percent”
By the way, jeez I hate that “part-time C” part. Sheesh!
Sam Regens - September 1, 2009
Part-time?
He’s caught 51 games, and missed 30 due to the DL.
Rob has caught 66.
msb - September 1, 2009
Split time, personal catchers, whatever. I'm just curious if it affects the pitch calls in certain counts with men on base
He throws a lot of offspeed stuff in fastball counts.
Kermit. - September 1, 2009
I bet Joh doesn't even play baseball for half the year.
Lazy Asian.
PDXTai - September 1, 2009
He's like a cross between Tiger Woods and B.J. Upton.
hcoguy - September 1, 2009
And yet, we keep hearing, Rob Johnson is the good "defensive catcher."
Heydude - September 1, 2009
Waiting for Jeff's game notes where he tells us Fister is the second best SP in the organization!
Rudy4three - September 1, 2009
If it was my turn to do the WE% chart, it would have been similar concept with a slight variation of the pictures.

Can someone explain to me how in the heck Doug Fister got so good?
Two years ago he pitched like Chris Jakubauskas, and last year he spends the year in AAA raking, but doesn’t make it to the bigs. Is this a lucky year or is this who he really is?
maalox - September 1, 2009
We just don't know nobody expected him to be this good at all.
Scouts said he was meh his stats say he was meh.
Slurvey - September 1, 2009
He's faced some pretty decent offensive teams this year and has done well.
I can’t explain it, but I’m more than happy to watch him pitch.
Sinking Away - September 1, 2009
Excellent control and intelligence?
Rudy4three - September 1, 2009
Intelligence eh?
Read SBN scouting report on Batista!
Slurvey - September 1, 2009
God that is so much bullshit
vivaelpujols - September 1, 2009
What about Greg Maddux?
I think pitcher smarts go a long ways when we’re talking about control pitchers
maalox - September 1, 2009
Do you really think that Miguel Bautista is a smart pitcher?
And that his his main problem is outsmarting himself?
vivaelpujols - September 1, 2009
Batista.
msb - September 1, 2009
Terribly sorry about that
vivaelpujols - September 1, 2009
There is a local radio guy who has mispronounced his name the last three years ...
I may be a little sensitive about it.
msb - September 1, 2009
Jaime Moyer certainly didn't get by on his overpowering fastball.
JAH - September 2, 2009
Your question is phrased exactly like Yoyogi's.
russak - September 1, 2009
Hey, someone noticed
I just thought it made sense to rephrase the question with Fister.
maalox - September 1, 2009
OK, you are admiring me
Carry on then
Yoyogi - September 1, 2009
You making fun of me, son?
Yoyogi - September 1, 2009
No idea!
Jeff Sullivan - September 1, 2009
Fisting the competition!
Fin - September 1, 2009
The correct answer is that he didn't
Graham MacAree - September 2, 2009
He has a room in his elephant
Wait, I’m doing this wrong.
PDXTai - September 1, 2009
Fister, keep doing good stuff. It's confounding and really awesome.
.Taylor - September 1, 2009
Thank you Doug Fister
Thank you
oc - September 1, 2009
Hey you can sponsor pitchers on Brooks Baseball
Doug Fister is available. Also the ump had a fat zone
Kermit. - September 1, 2009
Remember Jeff's description of Garret Olson
and how he look uncomfortable on the mound, wearing a baseball uniform, etc.? Fister looks just the opposite. He looks confident and like he belongs. He’s also definitely smart and knows when to use his pitches. Not likely he keeps getting these results, but it’s fun to watch him when he’s on.
appleshampoo - September 1, 2009
So I hope Trevor Bell becomes a good pitcher.
He’s a great guy to banter with. I just hope that when he finally becomes a decent 3-4 starter, it’s for a team other than Anaheim. I’ve gotta say though, if you get a chance to talk to the guy down by the bullpen, he’s an absolute class act.
