True story: I forgot to write this preview not because of residual jet lag from my trip but because I legitimately momentarily forgot that baseball is still going. With Ichiro's stuff out of the way there is no meaningful aspect left to this season and we're not seeing post-season play and frankly, the crop of teams that are bores the crap out of me. The NFL has kicked off, the MLS is heading into their own pennant drive, of which our local 11 still factor and hockey is about to drop the puck on games that count. I cannot believe I still have to write about baseball for another month.

Note that the preceding sentence was one of fascination, not whining. I am not angling for sympathy from the readers, after all, if I wanted to stop, I just would. It's just one of those weeks where my wherewithal is not up to snuff. I had been mentioning to some people before I left how I had forgotten what I do with myself Monday through Friday nights when baseball is in its offseason and there is no longer a sporting game 95% of the days to watch. I think I just discovered the answer.

Anyways, Yankees, much better than us, et cetera, et cetera.

GAMES

Game 1: Felix Hernandez vs. A.J. Burnett
Game 2: Doug Fister vs. CC Sabathia*
Game 3: Ian Snell vs. Joba Chamberlain

Did anyone mention during the offseason the the two marquee pitches the Yankees brought in via free agency both go by initials? It's an almost interesting note.

If you have the chance to go tonight, do. Not because it's the Yankees, or because it's a nice Friday evening or whatever peripheral excuse you can come up with. Go because it's Felix. And it's Felix in a, to him, a big game and that's when Felix can be the most fun to watch. But even beyond that, go because it's Felix and looking at the remaining schedule, I am not-so-subtly saying that this might be the penultimate chance for you to watch him live in Safeco wearing a Mariner uniform. Go.

The is the worst September I can remember

If Felix can throw a shutout tonight it will really help his Cy Young case

His second place case you mean.
Of course CC Sabathia will win the Cy Young award.
No if his ERA is close enough he can get it on the strength of a superior W/L record
Felix being traded would make me a sad panda.
I really hope we extend Felix for 10 more years.
About the meaning of the rest of the season

I’m thinking that if they end the season strong the Mariners could actually have a chance to have the 5th best record in the league. No prizes, but considering they had the worst and lost more than 100 games the previous season, that would be some good show from Wak and the crew (and of course Z).

It’s not so easy considering the gap now, but it would be awesome if Ichiro managed to take the batting crown from Mauer. And I want to see him get many hits the remaining games because it wuld suck if Jeter got the most hits of the season (even though Ichi was out for 16 games he’s still leading but the gap is around 10 and Jeter has an easier time being in the Yankee lineup).

And of course, Felix making his case at least to be included in the Cy Young discussion.

Also interested to see how Fister does, and RRS starts are really enjoyable these days.

Sorry, wuld should be would
And 5th best may sound like meh, but that would be just behind the division winners and the Red Sox

Not bad.

Wait a minute, I'm an idiot! I meant 4th best!!
Yaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnnnnn

Sorry, were you saying something? I zoned out after you said 5th best record out of 14 teams when said record wouldn’t qualify them for the postseason or mean anything at all.

Or something along those lines.

4th best!!!
Oh snap!

Now we can qualify for Champions League play, which certainly gives us a big financial boost and oh wait this isn’t the Premiership, 4th best means absolutely nothing.

4th best still means you'd have to play a qualifier to get to the CL proper though
4th best still wouldn't qualify them for anything but it would be technically 4th best with 4 teams in the postseason

But just feel free to keep being depressed.

Uncaring != depressed,

but thanks for playing.

I'd like to finish this year with a winning note.

Doesn’t really matter how much we win. This team still needs a lot of work over the offseason. I’m very thankful we now have a front office that’s not going to be seduced by our record to the point where we’re making decisions based on said record.

I'd like to finish .500 and get the best draft pick possible.

Nobody really cares about anything else since we’re not going to the playoffs

Happy.... Felix Day.
Jesus

This thread makes me a little sad.

Felix won't get traded
I dunno.

I suppose I could see the Mariners doing that, but if you figure that the returning roster for 2010 is short a 3-5 WAR player, it’s awfully hard to see how trading one of the ones you have gets you closer to having enough 3-5 WAR players. Yeah, Billy Beane’s done pretty well dumping their aces… but the counter to that is the A’s have a well-below .500 record the last 3 years, supergenius GM and all.

But hey, if GMZ can trade 5 WARs for 2010 for 8-10 coming back, more power to him.

Reading that last sentence

I died a little inside.

There's always the Rockies to root for though.
Fuck the Rockies, they had their improbable little run.

Now they’re the MLB’s Gonzaga and fuck Gonzaga.

They're a couple runs and several division titles short!

:)

I'm just jealous because my favorite college basketball team went an embarrassing 0-39 two years ago.
Yes, but they were permitted to advance in the NCAA tournament even after games which they lost
GOD
HOW HAVE THEY VACATED TWO FINAL FOURS WITHOUT EVER BEING PUT ON PROBATION

HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN

(And by probation I mean lasting sanction/postseason bans.)
Gonzaga is the gayest thing to have ever been gay in the gay-iverse.

It’s 10000 times gayer then the pile.

Crying is manly you insensitive fuck
The best part of Felix getting traded is that there is a 0% chance that it won't be to a team that we hate!
