if they have a stellar career, why does it matter if they go to/win the World Series or not? The fact that Junior has never been doesn’t diminish what he has accomplished in the slightest.
I can see how it might be difficult for a player to have a tremendous career and never win a World Series.
It is the ultimate goal, after all, and while it shouldn’t change our evaluation of their careers I can definitely understand how not ever winning one might be tough.
I just kept rewinding, rewinding, rewinding. And then I listened to Niehaus’s radio call 20+ times (AMAZING CALL).
It was almost a perfect storm of an event. I say ‘almost’ because this was not a playoff game nor did it have playoff implications for the Mariners. However, it was against the Yankees in late September. Every third person in the stadium was a Yankee fan. There were a ton of cheers when Hannahan and Carp struck out. Then Mike Sweeney kept the game alive with the long double.
But here is where it really came together. The crowd is pumped because the tying run is on second base and Ichiro is coming up— the night after he hit a walk-off single. On the first, which is key, the crowd is standing on their feet cheering loud to get into Mo’s head. And when that ball came off the bat EVERYONE knew it was gone. Immediately, 20,000 people turned to the Yankee fan sitting next to them and went nuts. It was important this happened on the first pitch because the crowd progressively gets less boastful as an at-bat continues. Ichiro took every ounce of energy in the stadium and put it in that one swing.
Just listening to the crowd’s reaction, both on TV and radio, is simply amazing. It sounds like a sellout during the playoffs at the Kingdome. Griffey may have been the only other person to induce that kind of moment. I love you, Ichiro. And thank you Felix for setting that moment up by pitching nine incredible innings.
Dave’s call was definitely one for the ages. FLY, FLY, FLY AWAY!
You could tell it was out of the park by the absence of any doubt in his voice.
Also, kudos to someone I’m not that big a fan of normally, New York Vinnie. His presentation on the post-game was spot-on. In case you missed it, he replayed Dave’s call numerous times in a row and then called-out the stay at home fans (of which I was one) for the fact that only 28k fans were at the park on a perfect NW evening for a Yankees game. Of course there’s a recession, but it needed to be said.
Every time Ichiro does something that reminds us of his awesomeness, perhaps we should spare a thought for Bill Bavasi. For inking Ichiro to his extension, we owe him.
While we were yelling and jumping and high-fiving, and I was screaming my head off like a fool, I made sure to take a breath to get to his eye level and say “son, THIS is why you stay for the whole game”. Then he high-fived me again and more exuberance ensued.
And then hearing Dave’s call on the radio like a dozen times on the drive home was just icing on the cake.
Possibly too awesome for this solar system.
Nice shot of the Moose vs Bullpen in the gallery.

Best. Ending. Ever.

I just love that the team looks like it's having a blast this year

I thought Graham was away for the weekend.
katal - September 19, 2009
We need, need, NEED
To take this guy to the World Series. He freaking deserves it.
section331 - September 19, 2009
I'm sure his agent can get him some really good seats through MLB
oh wait.
pdb - September 19, 2009
Doesn't Griffey deserve it, too
Griffey and Ernie Banks can be the poster children of never been to the World Series.
HitKing69 - September 19, 2009
I'd feel worse for Griffey if he hadn't bullied his way out of playing for a legitimate WS contender.
Aaron Campeau - September 19, 2009
We would have been worse with him
Poochie - September 19, 2009
Fitting since each player was only good for half of their career
Poochie - September 19, 2009
It doesn't matter who the player is

No
What did I do there?

I watched the replay last night 10+ times.
I just kept rewinding, rewinding, rewinding. And then I listened to Niehaus’s radio call 20+ times (AMAZING CALL).

I have an mp3 recording of Dave Niehaus.

Dave's call...

IrishMariner - September 19, 2009 via mobile
I'm all for having positive thoughts about Bill Bavasi.
But lets be honest. We don’t owe him squat.
ThundaPC - September 19, 2009
Yeah, if Bavasi had nothing to do with Kenji re-signing, then he definitely had nothing to do with Ichiro's re-signing.
Wilder. - September 19, 2009
New York Vinnie can go away forever.
BrianL - September 19, 2009
I can't remember ever loving Ichiro more. He defies words. He defies description. There is no one fucking better.
royalcurve - September 19, 2009
I have a hypothesis that there is no one better at fucking so hopefully Ichiro has respect for the scientific method
Aaron Campeau - September 19, 2009
Whatever his method is, that's clearly the correct way to do it.
royalcurve - September 19, 2009
Doesn't Ichiro do the "suck it" sign right before he gets to home base?
I want to see a gif!!!!
Roy Weaver Stuckey - September 19, 2009
Did you know that the MLB provides moving picture highlights with audio?
It’s true!
BrianL - September 19, 2009
Be a good fellow and click that link for me would you? It's a bit of a bother
Kermit. - September 19, 2009
Not worth it.
You have to wait almost two minutes to get the payoff.
Wilder. - September 19, 2009
Is it the game recap? Forget that one, they have a highlight for just the homer.
Kermit. - September 19, 2009
I said I wanted to see a gif, not a replay video.
Roy Weaver Stuckey - September 19, 2009
You asked for it
Jeff Sullivan - September 19, 2009
Beautiful!
ralphie81 - September 19, 2009
Ichiro does the "Suck it!" move again after he leaves the celebration.
You can catch it on the YES Network broadcast. They have some good replays with a couple different angles.
And UW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wilder. - September 19, 2009
I will see this in my mind on my deathbed.
royalcurve - September 19, 2009
Unless something radder happens before then.
royalcurve - September 19, 2009
Hopefully this.
ralphie81 - September 19, 2009
You spoil us too much.
Slurvey - September 19, 2009
Thanks, one of the best gifs ever.
Heydude - September 19, 2009
Well I'm confused
Jeff Sullivan - September 19, 2009
Too high?
Poochie - September 19, 2009
No, it's like a foot off the plate before Ichiro even completes the swing.
He is a god.
Smegmalicious - September 19, 2009
He wanted into to go into the glove, not into the right field bleachers.
CapSea - September 19, 2009
Saving face?
“Whoops, that’s not where I wanted it. Yea, that’s the ticket. I don’t blow saves often you know.”
ThundaPC - September 19, 2009
Weeee
Jeff Sullivan - September 19, 2009
I love what Tui's doing.
gregrabble - September 19, 2009
The team needs to add these fireworks in whenever these moments occur
Goose - September 20, 2009
Sweeney is saying 'SUCK ON THAT!'
Amazing.
JamMasterJesus - September 20, 2009
I am so, so glad I took my kid to this game.
Spoomeister - September 19, 2009
Thank you so much for teaching that virtue to your child.
As I am always grateful my father impressed it into me. And as such, the greatest game I ever saw was a walk-off grand slam from Adam Dunn.
Torrid - September 19, 2009
However Adam Dunn doesn't like to play Baseball so that doesn't count.
Slurvey - September 20, 2009
I will never forgive Adam Dunn for defensive performance during the World Baseball Classic.
That was like watching someone get tortured.
