Matthew's Update: Per request, I've created an iTunes feed here.
Here you go, baby birds. We've been talking about doing something like this for ages, now, but recently John Morgan gave us a nice kick in the ass and really got the ball rolling. And so it was that, yesterday afternoon, Matthew, John and I spent half an hour discussing Felix and the state of the team as a whole. The finished product is below. Try and pinpoint the moment when Ottawa scored a goal.
Lookout Landing Podcast with Jeff and Matthew
This being our first podcast and all, it's obviously raw and a little disorganized. When you've got three people on the line, it's hard to know who's supposed to talk when. But doing one gave us some ideas on what we need to improve, and we're serious about making these a regular feature. So we'll see where we go from here. Ideas are always welcome, although as long-time readers can attest, any idea you give the mods is an idea we won't bring to fruition, since we're too arrogant to build off someone else's work.
This should be a fun change of pace. Alternatively I guess it could suck a lot.

Any thought to a live show?
Call-ins from LLers!
RunningFool - January 20, 2010
Without John's help we don't even know how to involve a third person (Graham, for example)
Sooooo we’ll see how much we learn.
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
Live call in is possible
You would probably want someone controlling that other than those speaking, and it’s sure to be a clusterfuck the first time, but it’s possible.
John Morgan - January 20, 2010
Maybe live IM instead
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
Live write-in questions would be cool.
BrianL - January 20, 2010
I'm not personally wild with the idea of live anything.
Matthew - January 20, 2010
Yeah me neither
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
Perhaps a heads-up so we could e-mail questions in advance?
BrianL - January 20, 2010
Way better
Similar to the event format, really.
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
that could work.
if we turn this into a routine, I’m sure it’ll be simple to work in that
Matthew - January 20, 2010
But what would be the point of that?
If we want to ask you a question, we can do it anywhere on the site and get a pretty immediate response already.
Robert Lintott - January 20, 2010
This allows us to be more thorough
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
I can see that
But you already are pretty thorough on the site. That said, I don’t think having emailed questions would in any way detract from the podcast, I’m just sort of playing devil’s advocate here.
Robert Lintott - January 20, 2010
This might open up the forum for people who aren't comfortable commenting regularly.
BrianL - January 20, 2010
We'll have to talk in private about what we can do to keep these interesting
Have to collect as many ideas as possible.
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
be more funny.
Matthew - January 20, 2010
I can't wait for the Silva Fat Joke edition of these
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
It gets funny when you transfer it to a different medium
Poochie - January 20, 2010
You should do one when you read people's flags.
Robert - January 20, 2010
Monthly rec leaderboard updates!
Robert Lintott - January 20, 2010
The top 5 never changes anyway
Robert - January 20, 2010
I bet spots 4 and 5 would at the point in which people become more aware.
katal - January 20, 2010
Give me this season!
Scruffy Lefty - January 21, 2010
and warning messages
Poochie - January 20, 2010
That went over great the last time
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
It was one of the highlights of my European vacation.
Robert - January 20, 2010
Live on Google Wave so everyone can watch as you type.
Teej - January 20, 2010
I'd be more comfortable speaking live than typing live.
Matthew - January 20, 2010
This feature is unintentionally hilarious.
Kermit. - January 20, 2010
Yes Yes we get it that you hate people
You don’t need to constantly talk about it.
Robert - January 20, 2010
Nobody is going to get what I was actually trying to get at with this joke so please hide!
Robert - January 20, 2010
No I got it
Poochie - January 20, 2010
You beat me to this joke
royalcurve - January 20, 2010
Two notes:
1. Any and all mistakes are my fault.
2. My laughter is naturally awkward and canned sounding.
John Morgan - January 20, 2010
I hope you guys don't lose sight of producing written content
:)
stupidquestions - January 20, 2010
Actually the really neat thing about podcasts is that they only take half an hour or so
Even with a lot of preparation and a lot of editing, it takes less time to put one of these together than it does to write a good post.
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
Nice, although I hope it didn't seem like I was serious
Obviously I realize you guys have been a machine lately.
stupidquestions - January 20, 2010
Valid concern regardless
Deserved a response.
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
MATTHEW
vivaelpujols - January 20, 2010
Oh god the 88-89 MPH Felix Day in Texas.
BrianL - January 20, 2010
Heh, I've taken to calling that The Chicken Little Game.
Kermit. - January 20, 2010
YES YES A MILLION TIMES YES
I have been dying for a good Mariners podcast. Also, if you’re looking for an easy way to do them, I’ve toyed around with BlogTalk Radio and it seemed pretty straightforward and easy to involve people (including call ins!) remotely. Might be something to look into.
Robert Lintott - January 20, 2010
Ten minutes in or so but I like this format
John leading the questions with Matthew and Jeff answering is really easy to follow.
BrianL - January 20, 2010
And finished.
For a first podcast this came off really well. Great job, Jeff/John/Matthew.
BrianL - January 20, 2010
Thanks
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
I wonder how many amateur and professional journalists LL can make obsolete
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
4
vivaelpujols - January 20, 2010
You haven't already?
Goose - January 20, 2010
COMING FOR YOU SALK
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
The day we get RRS on a LL podcast is the day I go out on top
Matthew - January 20, 2010
I wonder if we can do with Bedard and just talk Sens
Matthew - January 20, 2010
Baker might actually be worth talking hockey to.
Robert Lintott - January 20, 2010
Non-Sens fan
fuck him
Matthew - January 20, 2010
Well that alone would be worth listening to.
He’d just get so flustered. It’d be A+
Robert Lintott - January 20, 2010
Let me ask the guy I met in Canada
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
I can ask him when he gets home
royalcurve - January 20, 2010
With the amount of content LL has had recently, I'm pretty close to being out of work.
Teej - January 20, 2010
I'm sure you can find another Padre who enjoys eating burritos.
abender20 - January 20, 2010
Well at this point you're probably the only one left
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
I hear that.
Sec 108 - January 21, 2010
I'm not sure how you would incorporate them (maybe a podcast via Skype connections)
but have you considered perhaps using USB microphones to improve audio quality? I’ve had pretty good luck with these.
BrianL - January 20, 2010
Yes
Plus Matthew and I are way more comfortable with mics than phones.
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
I hate using the phone in general and especially hate it for a long, in-depth conversation.
John Morgan - January 20, 2010
Then boy was yesterday less than ideal for all three of us
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
Word
Poochie - January 20, 2010
that is actually been my plan for weeks.
Matthew - January 20, 2010
I have two USB mics!
Matthew you should come get them!
Kirk - January 20, 2010 via mobile
I'm listening to this now, it's enjoyable
Two things so far:
1) Pitch f/x is now pretty well calibrated across all stadiums. In 07 it was pretty shitty, but right now it’s pretty good.
2) Do you think he actually has two distinct grips for his 2 seamer and changeup, or do you think that it’s more of a range of grips in between the two?
vivaelpujols - January 20, 2010
I think he probably has two distinct grips
Fastball and changeup grips don’t feel anything alike if you’re a pitcher.
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
Pitch f/x is better certainly
but it still meaningful blips and when you’re talking 1 mph, it’s not worth freaking out over
Matthew - January 20, 2010
Is there anyway (if this becomes regular) that you put it on iTunes?
I’d love to have a way for it to automatically sync with my MP3 player.
Robert Lintott - January 20, 2010
I don't know how to do that
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
I can tell you via email if you get serious about it.
Robert Lintott - January 20, 2010
Can't you just download it and drop it in the appropriate folder?
Poochie - January 20, 2010
I'm looking into it
Matthew - January 20, 2010
Its actually quite easy.
Scruffy Lefty - January 20, 2010
As long as you have somewhere that can host the mp3s
Scruffy Lefty - January 20, 2010
I do
can you shoot me an e-mail with the process?
Matthew - January 20, 2010
Yes - Let me double check somethings cause its been about a year since I've done it.
I’ll send you something within the hour.
Scruffy Lefty - January 20, 2010
I'd be interested in this too
speedomike - January 21, 2010
Cougcenter does a great job with three people on a podcast
One person is the moderator for each podcast and asks a question of one person then the other. Then the moderator adds in his two cents. Then that is repeated until the end of the show.
I am glad you are doing this. Thanks
Coug1990 - January 20, 2010
That's a good format
but it’d also be nice to have some variation in there. Regular and irregular segments.
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
I am also sure that the more that you do this, the more that you will get used to each other's tendencies.
Coug1990 - January 20, 2010
I mean it wouldn't all have to be direct Q&A
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
Do we need to evaluate chaining of the participants?
How many podcasts can we reasonably expect Jeff to do? Graham? Matthew? Is there enough depth in the pod behind the starting podders? If a replacement podder gets appearances, whose appearances might the replacement podder be taking and what would be the effects on podcast performance?
Steve Nelson - January 20, 2010
Elias is awesome
vivaelpujols - January 20, 2010
Parise is better.
Mariner John - January 20, 2010
Yay! LL podcast!
I will listen to it on walk/jog around the lake.
mark sobba - January 20, 2010
LL podcasts need a Tony Reali and boy do I have one in mind!
Robert - January 20, 2010
we already asked Fogel
Matthew - January 20, 2010
Yes that's the joke
Robert - January 20, 2010
Who's joking?
Matthew - January 20, 2010
If I get to the end of this podcast and there is no Fogel appearance I am never listening to another LL podcast again.
Robert - January 20, 2010
I am done with these.
Robert - January 20, 2010
You did not
Dewey N - January 20, 2010
Pretty sure we did.
Matthew - January 20, 2010
Let's ask Fogel
Poochie - January 20, 2010
I would love to be your Tony Reali
Dewey N - January 20, 2010
My people will call your people.
Matthew - January 20, 2010
I'm gonna need the number of Fogel's people
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
Let me ask Fogel
Matthew - January 20, 2010
I hate this place
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
It's the worrrrrrrssst
Poochie - January 20, 2010
My people handle all questions from now on
Dewey N - January 20, 2010
Hold on, let me have my people ask your people to ask you for your people's number
Matthew - January 20, 2010
We're never going to get anywhere!
Dewey N - January 20, 2010
You guys aren't worst :) Don't worry about it.
Robert - January 20, 2010
This medium is frustrating from my point of view because whenever I try to troll you guys I just end up talking out loud to myself and look like a crazy person.
Robert - January 20, 2010
We can troll them together Robert.
Kirk - January 20, 2010 via mobile
Break into the podcast
Surprise caller
Brian Floyd - January 20, 2010
Just finished listening to the whole thing,
I think it went very well for your first podcast.
Janic - January 20, 2010
Not bad at all, gentlemen.
While podcasts don’t really to a lot for me, I’d probably listen to most of these if they became a regular feature.
Teej - January 20, 2010
Honestly they don't do a whole lot for me either
I don’t listen to any. But if there’s enough interest, what’s the harm? Brings in a new audience.
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
They're really nice for when I'm at work
Nate Dogg - January 20, 2010
These are my feelings as well.
Goose - January 20, 2010
I can imagine these things being excellent once the kinks get worked out
not bad
Poochie - January 20, 2010
Aw, what fun are Jeff and Matthew without a few kinks?
Robert Lintott - January 20, 2010
I think you're confused.
Graham wasn’t in this trial run.
Matthew - January 20, 2010
Actually I noticed that
Poochie - January 20, 2010
Horseshoes and hand grenades.
abender20 - January 20, 2010
I just don't get why we can't shake this racist label
OlSalty - January 20, 2010
Just say that Tracy Morgan was the mod instead.
Faux - January 20, 2010
Holy wow.
CapSea - January 21, 2010
I think Brendan Ryan is better defensively than Wilson
Probably Rollins too.
vivaelpujols - January 20, 2010
Just a quick question
Are you guys going to keep it at half an hour or possibly longer?
melenious - January 20, 2010
No idea
I think 25-35 minutes is probably a good target but we’ll see how they develop.
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
Sweet.
It’s a cool concept, I listen to podcasts all day at work so I’m all for it. Good job, dudes.
melenious - January 20, 2010
Just don't go all Bill Simmons on us and lazily replace writing content with podcasts.
SethGrandpa - January 20, 2010
Podcasts and mailbags. yay
ToddK - January 22, 2010
At least they both cut down on how much Bill Simmons one has to read.
Teej - January 22, 2010
Good point.
He can be a tad long winded.
ToddK - January 22, 2010
The only e-mails LL gets are way way NSFW
Matthew - January 22, 2010
That's ok. My comment was more snarky than it appears.
ToddK - January 22, 2010
;)
Jeff Sullivan - January 22, 2010
Subject line
Graham MacAree - January 22, 2010
I'm not sure if that would be better or worse
Matthew - January 22, 2010
Just finished listening and I thought it was cool.
The one really nice thing is that I can just listen to it while I do other stuff in my room. I might have to listen to your soothing voices while I fall asleep tonight.
200tang - January 20, 2010
These podcasts would be perfect for popping onto an ipod or other device, and listening to whenever not near a computer.
Very well done indeed.
Indigo_Satellite - January 20, 2010
I liked it.
As has been the case with several others, I’m not big on podcasts. However, the structure was good (nice work, John) and both of you (Matthew and Jeff) were articulate and concise. If you are willing to put in the time to sort of re-hash and summarize your thoughts from the previous time period, cool. People will listen.
abender20 - January 20, 2010
Enjoyable!
I like that you talked about things that you haven’t discussed as much on the blog. My biggest fear was that it would be sort of a rehashing for everyone who reads all the articles but you did a good job of incorporating fresh ideas.
Dewey N - January 20, 2010
***SPOILER***
My favorite part of the entire podcast was the reference to Bradley knifing someone
Poochie - January 20, 2010
I don't condone talk like that
Dewey N - January 20, 2010
Aw why so serious?
Poochie - January 20, 2010
It seemed racist to me
Dewey N - January 20, 2010
People of all races can shank.
abender20 - January 20, 2010
Shank is a racial joke, stab is a crazy joke
Poochie - January 20, 2010
Or knife
whatever as long as it’s not shank
Poochie - January 20, 2010
I will take it as racism and will proceed to get offended
Dewey N - January 20, 2010
Oh I forgot you are a literate non-athlete white guy who attends college
carry on
Poochie - January 20, 2010
Thank you for being understanding
Dewey N - January 20, 2010
lair eater, ref. ferret aerial!
Dewey N - January 20, 2010
oh whoops
Dewey N - January 20, 2010
This is my new opinion on the podcast
Dewey N - January 20, 2010
This is my new favorite post.
Kirk - January 20, 2010 via mobile
I meant the liar eater...
Kirk - January 20, 2010 via mobile
Podcasts are great to listen to on your way to work or when exercising; places where you wouldn't normally read.
Janic - January 20, 2010
I read and comment on LL while driving to work.
Robert - January 20, 2010
Did you mention that you recently totalled a car?
abender20 - January 20, 2010
My car was totaled by some 18 year bitch while it was legally parked on the side of the road and I was miles away entertaining Jeff, Matthew and the lovely as always Ms. Jeff.

Fett42 - January 20, 2010
Dear Lost Abbey,
Have I got an offer for you!
Matthew - January 20, 2010
I'm going to go ahead and take care of the negotiations.
No reason I can’t needlessly insert myself in the middle of this for some free beer.
abender20 - January 20, 2010
I'm OK with being the local go-bewteen for the right price
my people will contact yours
seattlebruin - January 21, 2010
Pretty good stuff.
OlSalty - January 20, 2010
Just finished listening to it
And I gotta say, it was pretty entertaining to listen to. As others have said, an improvement in sound quality would make these even better.
Jackle Mackle - January 20, 2010
FOR GOD SAKES PEOPLE WE GET IT THAT HE MUMBLES ITS A DEAD MEME NOW
If you prefer that Jeff write just vote in the pole above and leave the personal attacks out of it.
Robert - January 20, 2010
Mumbling wasn't the problem
Jackle Mackle - January 20, 2010
dont see any personal attack there..
In fact no names are mentioned..
Paseman - January 20, 2010 via mobile
It was a joke
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
I figured it out when he used pole
instead of poll
Jackle Mackle - January 20, 2010
No, that's just the tumor.
Matthew - January 20, 2010
I voted no just because I prefer to read as opposed to listen to someone talking.
But the content was pretty good, if a little hard to follow (might be my proclivity for writing).
If this continues, I would like to request a written summary for those that don’t like spoken words. If not, no big deal, but I’m probably not the only one.
Faux - January 20, 2010
No written summary will be provided, at least from our end
Transcribing is the worst thing in the world, even when you’re just transcribing a summary.
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
I'd be willing to use an auto-transcriber,
and then run it through an online translator a couple times back and forth between English and various other languages and then posting the result.
Matthew - January 20, 2010
This is why you're the brains of the operation
Dewey N - January 20, 2010
I take back what I said in deference to your superior idea
Jeff Sullivan - January 20, 2010
Pods in Print does transcripts
http://podsinprint.com
Janic - January 20, 2010
This is how you get a action movie script.
Scruffy Lefty - January 21, 2010
That could prove to be quite amusing.
ToddK - January 22, 2010
Have you guys thought about trying to do a roundtable discussion (email or online chat) between the three of you.
I’m not sure if this is better but it might be easier. I think it would still be interesting to see each of you ask the other some hard questions. Maybe this isn’t worth it and podcast/posts would be better. Just a thought.
Edgar for Pres - January 20, 2010
They did it a few times.
It was called “Three Guys Who Agree on Everything.”
Teej - January 20, 2010
.
Link and link.
Teej - January 20, 2010
I couldn't remember if they did it or if USSM did it.
I like it.
Edgar for Pres - January 20, 2010
Awesome idea.
I won’t have to worry about Graham misspelling words.
JBell523 - January 20, 2010
Yeah, it's really annoying when he comes up with elaborate excuses just to cover his illiteracy, which in itself is a veil for his racism.
abender20 - January 20, 2010
Yes but I can't even say 'baseball' in American
Graham MacAree - January 20, 2010
Wait, really?
Kirk - January 20, 2010
The closest I can come is a retarded Bostonian accent
Graham MacAree - January 20, 2010
That's great.
I don’t know why i haven’t noticed that.
Kirk - January 20, 2010
He goes to elaborate lengths to avoid saying the word.
It makes for some hilarious sentence construction. Like verbal yoga, really.
Kermit. - January 20, 2010
Bahahahaha
He called you Matt.
Kirk - January 20, 2010
You need a theme song.
JonBBT - January 20, 2010
I already have one
Jeff Sullivan - January 21, 2010
What is it?
Dewey N - January 21, 2010
I haven't decided if it'll see the light of day
Jeff Sullivan - January 21, 2010

Ah....
Oops
speedomike - January 21, 2010
Just do the podcast
It was great!
If the live thing or the fielding questions are hard, just forget about it. Having the podcast once a week or every other week is good enough for me.
Stan L - January 21, 2010
I just listened
Thumbs up!
section331 - January 21, 2010
This is pretty neat, but I think I prefer to read you guys than listen to you guys. I truly hope you find this as constructive criticism.
You both say, uh, you know, I mean and yeah too often. You both also use far too many contractions and an over abundance colloquial adjectives. You also need to work on slowing down and enunciating a little better.
I have three guys that work on my team and each one of them have to present information to clients every week. I have spent hours with them, on their overall diction. One thing I always do before I have to speak, whether just at a staff meeting or in front of a large group, is to listen to Frank Sinatra. Not because I like his music, but he just has a very deliberate way of working through a phrase. He slows down and enunciates. When you rush through what you are saying it makes it sound like you have no confidence in the information you are presenting or yourself.
I am only saying all this because I feel like you three demand a certain standard of yourselves and us, and when I hear you speak, I do not hear that standard.
InSpokane - January 21, 2010
I prefer reading too
Also there’s no way the standards for writing and the standards for speaking should be equivalent, or even that similar.
Jeff Sullivan - January 21, 2010
Not saying they have to be equivalent, but some of the things I pointed out take away from information you're sharing.
InSpokane - January 21, 2010
How do contractions take away from the information we're sharing?
Contractions make speech sound more natural.
Jeff Sullivan - January 21, 2010
Not when they're over used.
they’re can start to sound like theyer.
InSpokane - January 21, 2010
I don't get it.
I know I definitely stammer a little too much, and that’s a problem. But I don’t get the contraction thing. We want these to be a little more casual and natural, because nobody wants to listen to a formal 30-minute presentation every week.
Jeff Sullivan - January 21, 2010
If you use them just be sure to enunciate.
When you stammer and use contractions like kind’a and they’re it just sounds kind of stonerish. Take it or leave it, I’m just trying to help.
InSpokane - January 21, 2010
I'm not sure how kinda and they're sound stonerish at all.
I’m sorry to jump in this conversation but when I hear someone speaking without contractions I think they are trying to be a twat. If this is just a casual discussion then why do they have to talk like they are doing a formal speech?
Kirk - January 21, 2010
Basically we want to speak in a way that's engaging and not pompous
It’s going to be different from our written content. We don’t get to pick and choose every word that we say. I think that makes it a fun change of pace.
Jeff Sullivan - January 21, 2010
I thought it was really good for a first podcast.
The only awkwardness came from the phone format-how weird to have to guess when the other person was going to speak. I think it only adds to the written content here and gives a human element as well-hard to believe you guys aren’t just stat spewing, post wielding robots :).

Our next podcast is going to be moderated by Linguo.
Matthew - January 21, 2010
I thought Linguo were dead?

They only work if you say the whole word. And this goes for most people.
A lot of times you’re sounds like yur; they’re sounds theyr; must’ve sounds like musta.
There are ways to sound professional and causal at the same time. You just have to say the word you are trying to say, and slowing down a little bit, not robot slow, just a little slower.
I’m not trying to bash anyone. It seems like Jeff, Mathew and Graham are on a path to something bigger, and I just thought I would add a little.
InSpokane - January 22, 2010
Nobody is going to hear "yur" and not understand if it's "your" or "you're," because they have the entire context of the sentence to work with.
There’s nothing wrong with using contractions in modern English — written or spoken.
Teej - January 22, 2010
I mean, I understand wanting to uphold certain language standards. I really do.
But contractions are a standard, accepted part of speech. Language evolves, and speakers have obviously decided over the years that contractions are a good thing. They speed up communication, and they confuse no one. I just think it’s a weird thing to worry about — particularly in a conversation about baseball.
Teej - January 22, 2010
You can use them,
All I am saying is that you have to say the real contraction, not the shorter version of the already short word. Some time record yourself in a conversation. Play it back them listen to the radio. You will notice a distinct deference.

By the way, I do appreciate the constructive criticism
Jeff Sullivan - January 21, 2010
I would prefer both of you be on your lips drunk next time.
Sec 108 - January 22, 2010
The idea came up
Matthew - January 22, 2010
So we'll get to hear slurred mumbling?
Just joshin’.
ToddK - January 22, 2010
Why do a drunk game thread when we can do a drunk podcast?

I will do my best to censor myself, but a curse is going to slip out on occasion
and I didn’t want to give Apple any reason to be dickheads
Matthew - January 22, 2010
That's me.
Thanks.
Fin - January 24, 2010
It should help me get through the work day once you guys churn out these podcasts more regularly.
Fin - January 24, 2010
Also, is it possible to make money off the podcasting?
Or is there certain legal restrictions since you guys don’t own LL?
