Personally, I've been all smiles ever since news first broke that Felix was signing, so I can't offer you much of a meaningful summary of today's events. As soon as I hear Felix say "I just want to win here" I'm like butter in the oven. Fortunately, the local media's pretty super, so if you want to read about the press conference, check out the posts from Baker, Drayer, and Divish. Each of them was somehow able to maintain some semblance of professionalism, which is beyond my means.
The most interesting bit, aside from the actual extension, has to be the front office comparison in Baker's post:
Hernandez's agent, Wil Polidor, was asked whether the change in regimes from Bill Bavasi to Jack Zduriencik made much of a difference when it came to getting this deal done. Polidor vigorously nodded his head and said it did indeed make quite a difference.
..."They realized that they had to sign this ace,'' Polidor said. "And they tried to sign him.''
The implication being that nobody really wanted Hernandez locked up long-term beforehand.
I've mentioned this a few times before...
Felix is open to re-signing with this team. He's always been open to it. I don't know why, mind you, but I'm not making this up. Bavasi just passed him lowball after lowball until negotiations eventually came to an unspoken halt.
It's a situation that could've been avoided had the team earlier signed him to an extension, but as much as Bavasi liked to say "it takes two to tango" (implying that he was open to an extension but Felix was not), the blame for this shouldn't fall on Felix's camp. Felix has always been open to signing an extension with the Mariners. Always. And Bavasi approached him and his agent on a handful of occasions. Bavasi, however, lowballed him with offers to buy out his arbitration years and get options for his first few years of free agency. It would be one thing if Felix turned down reasonable contracts, but Bavasi got frustrated because Felix wouldn't sign for pennies on the dollar. Don't get mad at Felix. Every player deserves the right to a fair contract. It's Bavasi's fault our ace never got one.
...but now you get what is, for all intents and purposes, confirmation from one of Felix's agents, who's probably a better source on the matter. Confirmation that, while Bavasi always said "it takes two to tango" when confronted with questions about Felix's future, it was the front office - not the player - holding everything back. Felix's side was always open. Bavasi's side never took things seriously.
I cannot believe that administration didn't kill us.

That man is criminally insane
Seriously, there’s no sane way of reconciling the Silva contract with the refusal to pay Felix.
OlSalty - January 21, 2010
He was waiting for a 2009 outbreak so he could then sign him 10 a 10x200?
Poochie - January 21, 2010
Wil Polidor?
What happened to Alan Nero?
katal - January 21, 2010
He's the head of Alan Nero group.
In the same sense that Scott Boras has agents working for his group, Nero has agents working for his. Boras doesn’t negotiate on behalf of all Boras clients and Nero doesn’t either.
andrewgolfsalot - January 21, 2010
Thanks.
I didn’t realize Nero had that large of an organization.
katal - January 21, 2010
Yea. I'm trying to get a job within the organization right now.
Along with about a hundred other similar organizations. A guy can dream, right?
andrewgolfsalot - January 21, 2010
Good luck!
katal - January 21, 2010
Thank you!
andrewgolfsalot - January 21, 2010
When you look at
how many guys they represent — including Gutierrez and Randy Johnson(!), Dwayne Wade and Tony Parker, Donovan McNabb and Lofa Tatupu, and even Wade Boggs and Gale Sayers and Edgar once upon a time — you realize what a big org it actually is.
wandergeist - January 22, 2010
I cannot express how happy watching Felix today made me.
There’s literally nothing that I’m less than ecstatic about. I love you Jack, I love you Felix, I love you Seattle Mariners!

We're just stronger now

We're just stronger now.

I just watched Superbad for the first time ever
Let me finally say “Now I get it”
Corco - January 21, 2010
No that character spells his name Fogell
My name is completely unrelated to the movie
Dewey N - January 21, 2010
Well this is surprising:
I’m not sure what to think of the fact that Joel Pineiro had a positive effect on Felix.
Goose - January 21, 2010
It's almost as if Joel isn't the worst human being to ever roam the Earth's crust.
abender20 - January 22, 2010
On the other hand, if they other guy he mentioned weren't Beltre but
Miguel Batista or HoRam I’d be worried.
Bearskin Rugburn - January 22, 2010
Player A?
JAH - January 25, 2010
It just backs up what we already knew
Bavasi did not understand what factors are important in running an organization.
Coug1990 - January 21, 2010
Well, this just points to
A particular obsession that led him astray time and time again: the insistence on “proven veterans.” He didn’t sign Felix for the same reason he did sign Jose Vidro. Both bad decisions born of the same flawed Weltanschauung.
wandergeist - January 22, 2010
I think it was really awesome to see how happy Felix was during the press conference.
He seemed like he was going to jump out of his suit he was so excited about coming back. Even in the audio clips you can hear him smiling. That makes me just that much more excited about watching him for (at least) the next 5 years.
Zwakamatsu - January 21, 2010
This a thousand times yes.
I couldn’t even find words to describe how excited he looked to have made the deal.
d0nkey - January 22, 2010
$78 Million
Can make anybody happy.
But yes, I know (and it’s obvious) it’s more than that.
wandergeist - January 22, 2010
$78.00 would make me happy right now!
I can only imagine what 78 million must feel like.
Andrew E - January 22, 2010
Wow.
As if Seattle needed any more reasons to hate Bavasi. Next thing we now, news will come out he’s the reason the Sonics left.
uw_chris - January 21, 2010
Next thing we *know*
uw_chris - January 22, 2010
Well, I don't really believe this
But I’ll throw it out anyway: it’s in the agent’s best interest to imply, or outright assert, that the problem was entirely with the Bavasi side of the negotiation. It’s not like he’s a neutral observer of everything that went on.
wandergeist - January 22, 2010
It is absolutely not in an agent's interest to get a reputation as a shittalker
How people see you goes a long way in this business. Ask Zduriencik. There is nothing to be gained from falsely piling blame on the former GM.
Bearskin Rugburn - January 22, 2010
The fact that Felix signed this completely reasonable deal 2 years from FA tells you all you need to know about the authenticity of that statement
OlSalty - January 22, 2010
Coming off a career year no less
OlSalty - January 22, 2010
Well, like I said
I don’t believe it. But when there’s this kind of money involved, I try not to take anything said by anybody at face value. Including (as you just saw) me.
wandergeist - January 22, 2010
I'm just saying if he's willing to sign this deal now there's no reason think he wasn't willing to sign something equivalent (or less) then
Bavasi just wasn’t offering anything close to this.
OlSalty - January 22, 2010
Reading this post and its comments has made me realize that I'm finally over Bavasi.
What an incredible feeling.
katal - January 22, 2010
I think a Felix extension was the one last lingering stench from his days in charge
And now that it’s finalized, it feels like we’re finally entirely out from under his ineptitude.
cwel87 - January 22, 2010
To me, Jose Lopez is still a mild foot odor
I realize he has value and really isn’t as bad as I want to believe he is, but I still can’t wait until the day he is gone.
MarinerManMatt - January 22, 2010
Plus we still have Silva/Yunibomber money on the books.
Never forget!
Omerta - January 22, 2010
Yuni's contract was a good thing at the time
We were all pretty happy. He just got fat.
Edgar for Pres - January 22, 2010
All? Speak for yourself.
Sec 108 - January 22, 2010
Yeah fuck that guy
tootthekazoo - January 22, 2010
Jose will be gone before the year begins.
You won’t have to worry about that smell anymore.
Andrew E - January 22, 2010
It's the 22nd of January...
Eyeball Kid - January 22, 2010
The year begins
On April 5. The intolerable interregnum we’re in right now isn’t 2010, it’s just “waiting.”
wandergeist - January 22, 2010
Interregnum?
Felix’s reign has another five years on it, at least
Graham MacAree - January 22, 2010
The time between the last game played last year
And the first game played this year. It’s an intolerable interregnum.
Every year.
wandergeist - January 22, 2010
I was playing off the latin roots of the word and Felix's kingliness
Graham MacAree - January 22, 2010
Yeah, I know
I just wasn’t going to indulge your interest in imperial implications.
wandergeist - January 22, 2010
Exactly!
I did mean season, but all the same I guess.
Andrew E - January 22, 2010
Zduriencik just said (talking with Mitch) that he would go up to Felix during the year and ask "do you want to be here?"
and Felix would say “Yes!”
msb - January 22, 2010
Per Drayer
Ah ha! Bribing all her little pre-school friends worked! I wonder how she’ll feel when she discovers Barney and Dora and the Muppets have cashed their final paychecks and moved out of her neighborhood?
Now that sounds promising.(Weirdest. House Rental. Ever.)
wandergeist - January 22, 2010
You don't know if Bavasi's hands were tied by mgt.
just sayin’
Paytheline - January 23, 2010
that is, ownership
Paytheline - January 23, 2010
What reason is there to think they were when he was allowed to throw all that money at Batista, Washburn, and Silva?
OlSalty - January 23, 2010
Yeah, there's just no way that explanation flies
Bavasi was clearly given free reign to spend money on what he saw fit, and he repeatedly stated his preference for “veteran leadership” and guys who could fit into “roles.” He (and the managers beneath him, Piniella and especially Hargrove) had little use for young players who weren’t already “proven.”
If anything i would expect the ownership, left to their own devices, to be most interested in developing and locking up assets they’d already acquired (ie their own prospects) as that is a cheaper way to fill out a roster. It was quite a notable development, don’t forget, when Bavasi made an off-season splash by signing both Beltre and Sexson as free agents.
wandergeist - January 23, 2010
The same ownership is still in place...
