Lookout Landing

LL Podcast

All right, time for a second go-round. We changed some things from the first attempt, going with a Skype call so that we could both be freed of holding cell phones to our ears. This one ran about 50% longer than the previous, checking in at just under 50 minutes, so I recommend taking a break or six during it to avoid growing resentful of our voices. I do not anticipate us ever not having enough to talk about.

Lookout Landing Podcast with Jeff and Matthew

Topics of discussion included Ben Sheets, intro songs, the Mariners' options at fifth starter, the state of the AL West, rooting interests in sports and I reveal some new information about the Mariners latest signing, Preston Vancil.

Overall, I think this one was better. Hopefully the next will continue that trend and so on until one day when we can afford to bring in an actual producer for these. As always, go wild with the feedback and suggestions in the comment thread.

I'm listening to it with headphones right now and it's really cool how I hear Jeff in my left ear and Matthew in my right
Should be the other way around?
Let's think of a reason this could be
I was going to comment how they shouldn't do that. It doubles the file size and doesn't sound good in my opinion.
I like it.
I like it a lot

Jeff and Matthew sound very different on the podcast than in real life, so it helps

Yeah on the first one I was confused as to who was talking at sometimes

I think on this one they sound like they do in real life

I think Matthew sounds more like real life

but I’m guessing that’s the audio quality since he’s the one recording

Actually, Jeff was unavailable for this recording

so I just recorded myself imitating him.

My complaint with the stereo

is that I tried listening to it with just one earbud at first, keeping one ear open for anyone that was trying to get my attention, which obviously didn’t work. Other than that, I like it and this is much smoother than the first.

It makes me feel unbalanced
It's the old guardian angel/tempting devil duet

Jeff, being a lefty, is of course the devil.

When we expand it to three parties

I will be using telepathy to speak from inside your head!

You mean that wasn't you in the first one?
Hah, I only had my left headphone in and could only hear Matthew

I just thought Jeff was super quiet.

First impression:

Jeff sounds like he is underwater.

Aye he's a tad hard to understand at times

Matthew is very very clear though

He has a way better mic

And also he’s doing the recording from his end, which may make a difference.

I was worried you'd turned into a fish and was doing this podcast from the San Diego harbor.
Well he does (famously) look like one
I used to use Skype to do a radio show...

For a college about Fantasy Baseball. Grab a new mic, who was recording didn’t matter much. Also what recording software are you using? We used one called prettymay or something and it was well worth the 20 bucks or whatever we paid for it.

Just sounds like you are talking with your head in a sealed plastic container
He's even clearer after he's been drinking and I have just shown him my report card.
The iTunes link only shows the 'debut' podcast, not this new one.

Is it up yet?

If you subscribe to the feed, the new one will auto download.

No idea why it’s not showing up yet.

IT JUST WORKS!

Yes, fuck that Scruff McGruff ad.
Special guest R2-D2?
By this I mean there's some weird electronic background noises
At one point there's a helicopter
I love this comment more than necessary.
For some reason I've always pronounced WAR as rhyming with "are"

It never occurred to me to pronounce it to sound like the word “war”

I used to do this too so that I could differentiate between the two.

But then I got lazy.

They both sound the same inside my head when I say them.
When I say "war" it rhymes with "or". Does your "or" and "are" sound alike?
I also do this in my head.

Its like ‘whar’.

Damn, I haven't even listened to the first one yet

Guess I should get on that

"Noah Lowry has high upside like.....a metaphor"

Nice.

That's my line!
Like a simile?
Yes, like a simile
I wanted to listen but my speakers are broken, so I can only hear one of you.
Just an FYI...

the scout responsible for the indy league signing is a first-year scout, and this is the first player he’s recommended that the Ms have signed. He’s stoked about it.

Well there you go

Thanks!

Youppi!
I also appreciated the "they have Gaby Hernandez so they have space" comment
You guys are so awesome.

I love the podcasts

Great stuff

Even with Jeff’s cheapo microphone the audio quality was much improved over the last one.

Dwight Gooden says hi

http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYA/NYA199605140.shtml

I remember watching that game and being so god-damned pissed

Wasn’t that fairly soon after he tested positive for cocaine?

Man you guys are jaded. That last part was kinda depressing
Alternatively hockey is amazing
I think football is for me...

..what hockey is for you. Maybe basketball. Either way, I view baseball with a much different mindset than other sports; so much so that I’m not sure they should even be classified together.

So's baseball
You can't score a goal for the other team in baseball
Wrong.
Completely correct

there are no goals in baseball.

I think winning is a noble goal.
I really can't pay attention.

Jeff’s almost impossible to understand for me.

Nevermind, it was just the first minute or two.
I want every move to be magic
The Mariners have been no-hit twice

April 11, 1990 by Mark Langston and Mike Witt and May 14, 1996 by Dwight Gooden.

Maybe you'll take comfort in the fact that there's no way to "rub [me] the wrong way."

So no worries there.

I have had Brad Bergesen's Wikipedia page open for the past thirty minutes
I would be so happy if we won the World Series on a Jose Lopez clutch double
Or a 285ft. HR that some how found a way to get over the wall.
That would be a home run not a double
Not if Jose Canseco had anything to say about it...
Still wrong.
He want's to see a double, I want a HR

But I’m wrong, I know.

If it's too much effort then nevermind, but...

It would be cool if in your post where you mention what you talk about, you could include in parentheses approximately where in the podcast you’re talking about that (ie., Vancil (21:00)).

This is why they're hiring a lackey to transcribe the podcasts

pay is 10 recs per podcast transcribed

Having worked as a transcriptionist

10 recs is not nearly enough.

Jeff can't even afford a mic that makes him intelligible, how else is he going to pay?
Fair enough.

But aside from Robert, is there anyone else really planning on trying to do something with their recs?

Good job fellas

The short answer for licensing music: Yes. It is legally required for podcasters to pay a fee for using copyrighted works, including excerpts. Podcasting Legal Guide

Arn't you allowed to use any music

if the duration played is under 7 seconds?

Jeff's laugh through the bad microphone reminded me of this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McNnhM3BynU

So it doesn't work when I try to subscribe but if I download it, it works fine.

Is this on iTunes’s end (or mine) or is anyone experiencing similar difficulties?

The Mariners have been no hit twice.

The first time was this game, where Mark Langston(7IP) and Mike Witt(2IP) combined to no hit us.

But the only single pitcher to no hit us was Doc Gooden in this game.

Explicit?
I think it has to be there if there is swearing.

I’m not sure if there are exact rules on it.

Great job guys.

Pepperoni pizza and baked potato pringles are delicious.

Needs to be in mono

stereo sounds weird as hell with this. Reminds me of RvB episode 1.

It can be in stereo.

Especially if they are using stereo mics, which is unlikely. But why are they on separate channels? Was that an artistic choice? And it would be relatively simple to fix Jeff’s voice by boosting high frequencies and depressing some of the lower ones with equalization. Dynamic range compression would help as well.

I'm digging the stereo
I really liked Matthew's self-censor during the YP segment, and Jeff's potty mouth. :) It was a quick 45 minutes.
I gotta say, I was fully expecting to be bored of this by the half hour mark. And I was going to make a comment that it might be too long this time around.

However, I found myself paying attention to the whole thing and was surprised when you guys started talking about wrapping it up and that 45 minutes or so had gone by already.

If you think you were surprised, imagine what went through my head when I looked at the clock

Matthew and I had already been talking about about 20 minutes before recording and I had no idea it had been so long.

I don't know why

But I couldn’t stop laughing at the line about Olson/Washburn/French and various levels of toner and ink.
