but I’m starting to appreciate The Body The Blood The Machine a lot more recently, as well. Now We Can See has some absolute stunners on it, like We Were Sick and When We Were Alive, and all in all it’s a bit easier to appreciate on first listen than The Body The Blood The Machine. TBTBTM is a grower, though, and to me they’re now sort of 1 and 1A.
"The Body, The Blood, The Machine" is the best by far.
And that’s saying something because I think More Parts Per Million and Fuckin A are both among the best 40 albums of the last decade.
As for favorite songs: “Pillar of Salt,” “Returning to the Fold,” “Here’s Your Future,” “Power Doesn’t Run On Nothing,” “Forward,” “How We Know,” “I Let It Go,” “No Culture Icons,” & “Break and Brace.”
Right now I love the raw intensity of Fuckin A, the don’t give a shit attitude that the whole record pulls off. Their melodicism hidden beneath the dirty distorted textures. That’s also why I love More Parts Per Million. That being said, TBTBTM is brilliant and their best in my opinion. The message and lyricism behind the album is as strong as any and the songs blow me away, the perfect balance of catchy, punked out pop music. Now We Can See is a damn fine album as well, and probably their most accessible with the most pop laden hooks.
Does anyone else remember the band "Lucky Me" with Jon Auer from The Posies?
I was listening to their 3 song EP or single “Unlimited Tokens” and the singer is great. The album liner says her name is Frenchie Full Moon Wilson. I can’t seem to find anything about her. Does anyone know what other groups she has been in?
Daryl had spent the 3 weeks prior in the hospital and it was only his second show back. He had to stop in the middle of the show and eat a peanut butter sandwich, which was pretty cool. Also appearing at that show were The Blood Brothers and American Nightmare. American Nightmare was pretty cool, especially since the lead singer was missing his right hand.
Are you a fan of Glassjaw? Because I always have a hard time finding people that have even heard of them, which greatly saddens me
I seem to recall Glassjaw being pretty big over here for a while
a couple of Kerrang! covers (before they started putting MCR, Green Day and Fall Out Boy on the cover every week) and I had a couple of friends who were fans but I pretty much stayed at ‘I like what Ive heard but I haven’t heard much’.
I can see your point, some of their stuff is better than the rest.
With that being said, I love the raw enthusiasm that the group puts out. It’s straight youthful exuberance and I think what the album does is capture the essence of being caught between childhood and adulthood. A lot of angst about leaving the teen years, it’s pretty chilling at times.
and I couldn’t say that I know him, just that the couple times I met him he seemed decent enough. The first time I met him, I was with a friend who was obsessed with him and insisted we wait for him after a show. So the whole time we’re in line to meet him, I was thinking “what the hell do I say to this guy?” and by the time I got to where he was standing, all I could think of to say was “You know, the first time I saw the Replacements, both you and I were so drunk we could barely stand up”. He looked at me and just busted out laughing, and said “Man, those were the days, huh?” and then we chatted a bit and I went on my way. Funny.

Been listening to the new Beach House? I really enjoy it, but I think it’s a departure from their earlier albums, it’s more of a pop sound and less of that haunting beauty sound they had.
The new Yeasayer album is also a good album! It’s like they listened to The Talking Heads a ton and decided they wanted to emulate that.
So I've been listening to "Down the River of Golden Dreams" quite a bit lately.
I’m glad I managed to rediscover Okkervil River, because there are some great songs on this album. I don’t know if I hold it up with their best, some of the songs are just not quite there, like “For The Enemy”, but “It Ends With a Fall”, “The Velocity of Saul at the Time of His Conversion”, and “Song About a Star” are all great. I really wish I could find a good youtube video of “The Velocity…” because that one knocked my socks off when I heard it again for the first time, so to speak.
Also, they’re the only band I’ve yet encountered that can do the whole overwrought emotional thing without it ringing falsely for me.
Which is bad in that the one song nearly ruins it for me. That song, of course, is NOT Westfall, which I think is pretty awesome.
I stumbled on it back in the days when Sheff was writing for audiogalaxy’s website and loved it, then forgot about it until Black Sheep Boy came out… then I was hooked again.
The Pharcyde and A Tribe Called Quest are great choices. very goof hip hop taste in this thread.
Gotta be listening to:
Eazy Riderz – Andre Nickatina
Low Down, Dirty – Eminem
Passing Me By – The Pharcyde
Buggin Out – Tribe Called Quest
Still Got Love – Blue Scholars
I like his Blue Scholars stuff better than what he’s done with RA Scion in Common Market, but the two of them represent the NW very well. Have you listened to the Oof! Ep yet?
The Oof! EP was auight, but it wasnt up the overall level of quality that is Bayani
Also, I used to love Common Market (Tobacco Road is one of my most essential albums), but then I saw him live at Sasquatch and…..wow, that was the weirdest, most peculiar live hip hop performance I have ever seen.
I felt the same about Oof! I was disappointed the second half of the album was just instrumental tracks of the first half.
Yeah I could see Common Market being a little different in terms of a live show. I don’t listen to them as much as Blue Scholars, but you’re right, Tobacco Road, the song and album, are staples for them.
Post videos of your most incredible live music experiences!
I was lucky enough to be at Glastonbury 2007 where I managed to catch The Chemical Brothers on The Other stage. It was out-of-this-world and crazy as hell, simply the best performance I have ever seen at Glastonbury in all my times there! The crowd was mental, the lasers and pyro was stunning and it was just one of the most intense musical experiences I have ever been a part of.
Some kind soul posted part of it, our of their more famous songs Hey Boy, Hey Girl with the epic Evil Clown intro. It’s of course not as great as actually being there, but this certainly brings back a lot of great memories for me!
Please share videos of great live performances that you have been a part of!
One that immediatley comes to mind as far as a singular moment was seeing The Used on Warped Tour 2003.
During their set their singer climbed to the top of the stage dived into the crowd from the top of the canopy and landed on me an a friend of mine. It might not sound that crazy but here’s a pic of the stage to illustrate how insane an idea that is. It’s probably a three-or-so story fall.
I’ve certainly seen a lot better sets, but that one sticks out as a moment.
206Takeover by DJ SWERVEWON that has some great hip-hop out of the area. Spaceman and Fresh Espresso are two that jump out but the whole thing (about a half hour worth of tunes) is killer.
At home I use Bose Companion 3 desktop speakers, Sennheiser HDR30 wireless surround sound headphones, or Tritton AX360 optical surround sound headphones.
On the road I use a set of Phillips noise canceling headphones.
If I’m at work, I have some very nice Sony earbuds that handle bass really well. If I’m at home, I don’t really listen to music, but if I do it’s through my PS3/TV.
So here's a question for those that remember when MTV showed such things
What’s your favorite music video? One of my all time faves is Bastards of Young, by the Replacements. It helps that it’s an awesome song, but there’s just not a bad frame in this video – it was a great reaction to the overwrought insanity that characterized most music videos of the time.

I’m hoping to hear some good ones from everybody
tootthekazoo - January 29, 2010
Decadence is a great album
I’ve never got to see them (or Glassjaw) because his Crohn’s Disease has a tendency to cancel tour dates :(
My ringtone is E by Asian Kung Fu Generation.
Eyeball Kid - January 29, 2010
I saw Glassjaw back in 2002 at The Graceland
Daryl had spent the 3 weeks prior in the hospital and it was only his second show back. He had to stop in the middle of the show and eat a peanut butter sandwich, which was pretty cool. Like, I think that they can make great music (and Wet Hair is damn good), but they keep coming up short.

JY - January 29, 2010
Not sure but Lost Coastlines is one of my all-time favorites
Jeff Sullivan - January 29, 2010
How about Westfall?
Love that song, and now I’m reminded that I haven’t heard it in quite a while.
marc w - January 29, 2010
I like nearly all the songs off that album.

Still Got Love
The Pharcyde and A Tribe Called Quest are great choices. very goof hip hop taste in this thread.
Gotta be listening to:
Eazy Riderz – Andre Nickatina
Low Down, Dirty – Eminem
Passing Me By – The Pharcyde
Buggin Out – Tribe Called Quest
Still Got Love – Blue Scholars
E2ESQUARE - January 29, 2010
Milton Bradley's walk up music
Insane in the Brain- Cypress Hill
tacomamendo - January 29, 2010
Any time someone mentions this song
I can only think of the London Symphony Orchestra arrangement from the episode of the Simpsons where Homer goes to Lollapalooza.
BrianL - January 29, 2010
So awesome
tootthekazoo - January 29, 2010
Ah here we go.
Linky
BrianL - January 29, 2010
I have the same thing with the Haiti song and the Sending Our Love Down the Well song.
I haven’t watched the Haiti video yet, but I’m fully expecting a Krusty-like performance from a mediocre artist.
Jed MC - January 29, 2010
wow, but atleast thats a good choice of song
E2ESQUARE - January 29, 2010
All you Seattle people should be listening to this
Still Got Love
Seattle hip hop at its finest
E2ESQUARE - January 29, 2010
Can Portland people listen too?
pdb - January 29, 2010
absolutely not
E2ESQUARE - January 29, 2010
I'll just go back to listening to my Quarterflash records then
pdb - January 29, 2010
seriously though you should listen, its a classic
E2ESQUARE - January 29, 2010
Already did, it's good stuff

Gonna swallow my tears!

Bayani is a great album.
Fire for the People and Opening Salvo are probably my favorite from it.
ZW21 - January 29, 2010
Its true, Bayani is a great album
There hasnt been any good new hip hop like that in a while, hopefully the new Blue Scholars EP will be fresh. Gotta love those UW beats
E2ESQUARE - January 29, 2010
The beats Sabzi comes up with are awesome.
I like his Blue Scholars stuff better than what he’s done with RA Scion in Common Market, but the two of them represent the NW very well. Have you listened to the Oof! Ep yet?
ZW21 - January 29, 2010
E2ESQUARE - January 29, 2010
I felt the same about Oof! I was disappointed the second half of the album was just instrumental tracks of the first half.
Yeah I could see Common Market being a little different in terms of a live show. I don’t listen to them as much as Blue Scholars, but you’re right, Tobacco Road, the song and album, are staples for them.
ZW21 - January 29, 2010
I think OOF! might be the best thing they've ever made.
That said, Bayani’s right up there.

EnglishMariner - January 29, 2010
I was initially really impressed that you had been to Glastonbury.
Then I realized who was posting. Still, that sounds awesome..
Torrid - January 29, 2010
I go every year, in 2008 I dressed up as a woman there.
EnglishMariner - January 29, 2010
One that immediatley comes to mind as far as a singular moment was seeing The Used on Warped Tour 2003.
During their set their singer climbed to the top of the stage dived into the crowd from the top of the canopy and landed on me an a friend of mine. It might not sound that crazy but here’s a pic of the stage to illustrate how insane an idea that is. It’s probably a three-or-so story fall.
I’ve certainly seen a lot better sets, but that one sticks out as a moment.
SethGrandpa - January 29, 2010
So there's a mixtape out now for free somewhere,
206Takeover by DJ SWERVEWON that has some great hip-hop out of the area. Spaceman and Fresh Espresso are two that jump out but the whole thing (about a half hour worth of tunes) is killer.
Woodinville_12thMan - January 29, 2010
I actually got that for free somewhere but I can't remember where.
Kirk - January 29, 2010
Yeah, same.
Might have been from Out for Stardom’s page…
Woodinville_12thMan - January 29, 2010
People on the West Coast should be helping more than others.
I have two words: Subduction Zone
Four More: San Juan De Fuca
InSpokane - January 29, 2010
So what do you guys listen to your music on?
Home:

Out and about:

lailaihei - January 29, 2010
Hm
At home I use Bose Companion 3 desktop speakers, Sennheiser HDR30 wireless surround sound headphones, or Tritton AX360 optical surround sound headphones.
On the road I use a set of Phillips noise canceling headphones.
BrianL - January 29, 2010
Meh?
I have no soundsystem so to speak. If I’m on my laptop at home and being somewhat lazy, it’s the Logitech Headset I bought a few months ago.
If I’m being serious about it, and I usually am, it’s the Zune Premium Headphones v2. They have a few flaws, but I enjoy them.
JY - January 30, 2010
If I'm in my car, I listen to my car speakers.
If I’m at work, I have some very nice Sony earbuds that handle bass really well. If I’m at home, I don’t really listen to music, but if I do it’s through my PS3/TV.
Teej - January 30, 2010
I just use my laptop's speakers at home
and on the go
