We heard a month or so ago that the Mariners were going to investigate locking up Franklin Gutierrez to a long term deal this offseason. That work appears to be over as the twitter-verse is abuzz saying the deal is set.
Four years, $20.5 million, with a team option for a fifth year is the word.
Gutierrez was worth 1.8 wins in a half-season's worth of play during 2007, worth 2.3 wins in three-quarters of a season in 2008 and just under 6 wins last season. The six looks like a huge outlier until you pro-rate Franklin's playing time in 2007 and 2008 and you basically have a guy that was a three-win player both those years and then took a step forward as he enters his prime years.
Expecting six wins going forward would be delusional, but four to five is entirely reasonable and I prefer to stick with four to be on the conservative side and to try and undercut his defense, just in case it turns out that Franklin is not actually batman out there. Four wins on the open market was worth about $18 million last year. In this winter's depressed market, it's down to about $16-17 million, not really a huge difference.
As Jeff pointed out, the deal buys out three arbitration years and a free agency year, and likely a second FA year as well once the option is exercised. Four years at 40/60/80/100 weighting comes out to 2.8 free market seasons. 2.8 seasons multiplied by, say $16.5 million and with a 10% reduction for the security of a long term contract and a "fair" deal for Franklin's worth and service time would be about $42 million. Even at just three wins a year, the fair number would be about $32 million for these four seasons. The Mariners are paying $20.5.
That's factoring in Gutierrez's arbitration status, by the way. If he were truly a free agent, he would be worth about $60 million over four years. And it's not even including the team option. Go light off some bottle rockets of joy.

"That other chap would also like a contract extension! "
so, give it to him, already.

Way to bump Jeff down the page.
That’ll show him who’s in charge.

This is fantastic because that money saved through buying out his arb years can go towards paying Felix
OlSalty - January 5, 2010
Two Batman references in one post.
Great signing, too.
abender20 - January 5, 2010
Jeff's is filed under "Good news," Matthew's under "Great news." Hmm.
.Taylor - January 5, 2010
I can't put this in the same category as Kenji going deep off the Dolphin
Jeff Sullivan - January 5, 2010
I see we never put Lee in there either
That was one awesome home run.
Jeff Sullivan - January 5, 2010
I trust your judgment.
.Taylor - January 5, 2010
Actually what am I talking about no I don't
.Taylor - January 5, 2010
Definitely Great News imo.
If our savings on this contract vs what we should be paying is $11.5M, thats kindof like saying we traded nothing for a 3 win player. That makes it about as awesome as the Cliff Lee deal, where we gave up a moderate amount for a 5 win player. (Except that this benefit is spread over a few years while Cliff Lee is just for next year, giving instant gratification).
This is awesome.

I think it'd be interesting to see what Guti would have gotten in arbitration.
I have a feeling it would have been less than the first three years of the contract, but I definitely agree that Guti is worth it. I guess I’m just wondering if he would continue to be undervalued.
coreyjro - January 5, 2010
Hell yes.
Zduriencik handled this perfectly from the beginning. Find an undervalued asset, buy low, properly evaluate what the player will give you in the future and then lock up player to team friendly contract. I like having an intelligent GM.

We're like the Rays, but with money!
seattlebruin - January 5, 2010
I think my first jersey will have # 21 on it.
InSpokane - January 5, 2010
Why would you buy a Ryan Langerhans jersey with #21 on it?
seattlebruin - January 5, 2010
From the M's website.
InSpokane - January 5, 2010
what happened to the link, anyway.

My first authentic Mariners shirt does!
gregrabble - January 5, 2010
Jason Bay is getting paid more than 3 times as much over a similar length
I know, Gutierrez wasn’t a free agent. Still, comparing everything to the Jason Bay contract makes me happy.

I would like to say that suggesting lighting off bottle rockets is a horrible idea.
Seeing as how there is a rather large bag of them in the garage at home, with Robert living there and claiming ownership to them as well, if you hear about part of Seattle burning to the ground then I can assure you I know where the source is. Thank you in advance for making me homeless, Matthew.

Those are being saved for the Felix extension

The last thing Gutierrez needed was an extension.

Go-go Guti extension arms!
EnglishMariner - January 5, 2010

Seeing Guti sign an extension with the M's gives me an extension.
JLProck - January 5, 2010
Seattle ExtenZ Gutierrez; Gutierrez ExtenZ Seattle.
Decatur - January 6, 2010
I hope I spelled that right, but I'm afraid to even type that in my search bar.
Decatur - January 6, 2010
Awesome!
I enjoyed the thought of Guti as Batman.
Goose - January 5, 2010
It still surprises me when I see this kind of deal because the go to number for me is WAR,
but holy crap is defense still under rated.
Zwakamatsu - January 5, 2010
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Decatur - January 5, 2010
Looking at Fangraphs, CHONE only projects Gutierrez for +6 defensively
Is Total Zone that inaccurate?
Dewey N - January 6, 2010
I imagine it is just highly highly regressed
Jeff Sullivan - January 6, 2010
Jeff Zimmerman's projections at Beyond the Boxscore have him at 14.8, which seems more reasonable.

Decatur - January 6, 2010
I think anything over +10 is probably a little optimistic
+6 feels more right than +14 to me just because if you want to be a +14 CF you basically are one of the best defenders of all time playing at your peak.
Edgar for Pres - January 6, 2010
Another way to put it is that
there has only been 1 player to have back-to-back seasons with over +15 runs (UZR) at CF (Andruw Jones) since 2002. There have only been 3 players to have back-to- back seasons with over +10 runs at CF (Granderson, Patterson and Cameron who only did it once each).
Its hard to be a super elite defender. If you were going to project somebody to have over +10 runs Gutierrez would probably be one of those guys but I don’t feel comfortable trying to project much more than +10 runs for anybody. Its just hard to do.
Edgar for Pres - January 6, 2010
Franklin Gutierrez just posted the best defensive season in UZR history
if there’s anyone that could reasonably project +15 or better, it’s him
seattlebruin - January 6, 2010
Apologies, second best
2004 Andruw Jones posted 30.0 to Franklin’s 29.1
seattlebruin - January 6, 2010
This is what I think as well
It was pretty clear watching him play that he wasn’t just fluking into those results.. His dominance at the position was fairly obvious, he’s just head and shoulders above everyone else in terms of reading the ball off the bat, the routes he takes, and speed. There are some players that are just so obviously superior skills-wise that they can’t be expected to come back to earth like normal people. Like Beltre, for example.
Now that’s not to say that he’s going to post a +30 year again, but obviously he is much much better than other players who hover around +5 average. I don’t think he will post less than a +12 or so year personally.
OlSalty - January 6, 2010
If you take his time in RF, dock him 10 runs for conversion to CF
and add in last season, you get about 2.25 years of defensive data stating he’s a +20 fielder in CF. Toss in a completely league average year to get you to the three-year benchmark and he’s still a +13.
I see no logic behind claiming that’s its unwise to project him as anything more than +5.
