Holy shit.
It was 1-0 A's. I changed the channel for a few minutes to watch something on Mt. Everest. When I switched back, it was 7-0 A's. 7-0 A's, and it wasn't yet eight o'clock, the game not yet an hour old. What are you supposed to do with that? For the first few seconds after switching back, the score was partially obscured by that little gray box that says 'HDMI 2'. I though, hey, 3-0, all right.
Then the little gray box went away. 7-0. To be losing 7-0 that early on a Friday night is a hell of a way to make everyone check out, and even though I kept the TV on FSN for much of the rest of the game, I wasn't watching. To watch something implies some kind of activity. The game was on, and my eyes were pointed at the screen while my brain thought about quicksand and beets. Not at the same time, because that would be weird.
The worst part is that I feel like there's golden writing material in here somewhere. The Mariners just lost 9-0. It was their fourth-worst defeat of the year, and easily among the most unwatchable. And they pulled this off on Fan Appreciation Night at Safeco Field, of all things. That's perfect. I feel like I should be able to do a lot with that.
But I can't, because the Mariners' effort tonight deadened my brain to the point where I feel like the best joke I can make is just leaving the setup as is. I can't come up with an extension or a punchline that takes the humor to another level. That feels like a failure.
Who knows, though. Maybe that really is the best joke one can make. Losing 9-0 to the A's on Fan Appreciation Night is funny in a self-evident kind of way. It's possible the setup doesn't need any help.
I'm not sure, but I'm going to take my chances, because it's Friday night, and this game just isn't worth any real mental strain. Way to go, Mariners. Sometimes I don't think you appreciate us enough.

After watching that whole game in person, they should have given all of us one of the 42 inch tvs as we left the stadium.

Masochism is its own reward

I was there and pretty much from the first batter on, nobody around me was paying any attention to the game at all
That’s always odd to me. Why do people pay to go to a game, just so they can sit and chat and pay elevated prices for food and drink, while not paying any attention to the game? I find it even more odd because my seats are in the terrace club, so people are paying about $45 per person just for the ticket to essentially just sit there and chat.

I would suggest that anybody who can afford to pay $45 for a ticket, at a game that means
nothing, is not there to watch the game. This was not a game worth watching. It couldn’t even be advertised as such. There was some other reason they were there. Maybe the ticket was a gift (sic) may the ticket was purchased in early April, who knows, but they weren’t there to watch the game.
TrustBaseball - October 1, 2010
Maybe they bought tickets back in March?
Matthew - October 1, 2010
Yeah that game was barrels of fun to watch.

I was at the whole thing as well.
It was the last game of my 16 game plan my awesome wife gave me for Christmas after we traded for Cliff Lee. I drank a ton and laughed hysterically. It was the perfect end to the experience of attending 16 games of 2010 Mariner baseball.

I'm really expecting that Sunday's game thought is going to be a sentence long.
Assuming they lose.
Coach Owens - October 1, 2010
To make it worse, Weaver got 4 strikeouts.
This is like when you get 99% on a test and you feel more depressed than had you gotten an 80%. I mean, one measly strikeout was all the extra Felix needed.

To hell with the Mariners for tonight.
Just forget about them and crack open a beer or a soft drink or whatever the hell you want.
You’ve written multi-paragraph summaries for a 61-99 team almost every night for six months. By God, you deserve it.
craig3410 - October 1, 2010
Amen to this. Anybody who can summon up any kind of summary deserves to crack open some kind of beverage tonight.
You deserve quite a a bit. I thank you for this. There should be a Mariner’s Blog Appreciation Night. You should get the 42" TV or whatever it is they gave out.

on the bright side, the Angels and Orioles won.

The Mariners' season is almost over. It's over for me.
ignacio - October 2, 2010
But a long time ago I saw 100 losses looming.
Is it better if I’m wrong? It seems like we’re less likely to somehow get stuck with Jose Lopez again than if we only lose 99.
ignacio - October 2, 2010
I got 99 losses but Lopez ain't one
lemonverbena - October 2, 2010
I am certain the the front office will base their personnel decisions on the difference between 99 and 100 losses.
abender20 - October 2, 2010
Yeah remember that one LL event where Z kept talking about how important round numbers were
Dewey N - October 2, 2010
It could have been worse.
Bruce Chen pitched the first shutout of his long career tonight against the Rays. It probably should have been against us. At least we were shut out by a better pitcher and he needed help from two relievers. Bruce Chen shut out the Rays all by himself without a reliever ever warming up. We could have felt even more appreciated if that had happened against the Mariners tonight. That would have been about perfect.
Droid Rage - October 2, 2010
You wouldn't have wanted to be there
Sat in my pathetic season seats with my wife last night. She’s not even a baseball fan and told me the game seemed really dull. But that’s the way it is with end of season games for bad teams. There was hardly anyone there. However, there were some people behind us up int section 327 that were vehemently anti-Figgins. This just in———-He is not exactly a fan favorite. Baseball is a weird game, it seems sort of laid back, and slow paced, but things spin rapidly out of control so quickly. That’s the part of it I love. Unfortunately i only really love it when things rapidly spin out of control for the opposing team.
I wish they’d bring back the days of fan appreciation nights with $1.00 beers and 25 cent hot dogs, like they had when I lived in San Diego and went to see the at the time horrible, horrible Padres. I wont go into the part where there were some security “issues” with fans later in the game.
cjhenry41 - October 2, 2010
I'm going to have to say you're right, we're not appreciated enough.
I not sure how we could be after a season like this. This has been incredible gut drenching, and once the guts gone, what’s left?
