Lloyd McClendon has served as:
McClendon's resume works as evidence that there are x number of coaches for x number of coaching positions, and that when one guy gets fired, somebody else's coach gets hired to take his spot, and everybody just shifts around a little. There are no new coaches, and when old coaches start to die, new blood is not introduced, and the position is eliminated. It is expected that within the next 40 years, the final remaining coach will expire, and all players will be left to fend for themselves.
Is McClendon any good? No idea. He had a 43.0% winning percentage over five years with the Pirates. In the five years previous to his reign, the Pirates had a winning percentage of 45.5%. In the five years since, they've had a winning percentage of 39.8%. The only thing I can conclude from these numbers is that the Pirates are somehow getting worse.

I have a feeling this will be one of those interviews
where the applicant has no clue how over his head the position he’s applying for is and, ten minutes into the conversation, both him and the employer are still making small talk about the Red Sox and the Boston commute, trying to find a polite way to end the interview and to stop wasting each other’s time for a job he’s obviously not qualified for.

There are a lot of managerial openings this winter and most of them are better jobs than the Mariners.
If we are intent on hiring before the other teams then we will get to interview people who lack either the ability or the self confidence to wait for one of the better jobs. This is not a good year for the Mariners to be hiring.

One thing you can glean from this I think
is they’re going to be pretty conservative with the next manager. Every single name, every one, is a fairly experienced ML manager. There was speculation when Wak was fired what kind of guy they would hire next and the general thinking was it was gong to be a good ole boy. Looks like it will.

That might have some validity to it.
I got the impression this year that a lot of fans would have laid off Wak if he had just been more fired up and yelled and players and thrown some bases around the field. I think that’s a pretty stupid reason to like a manager, but there are also a lot of stupid fans out there I guess.

If there is a feeling that Wak wasn't strong enough to control the clubhouse,
then a “fire-y” or “tough” manager might make some sense. It has been quite a while since we tried that approach (Hargrove, Melvin, Wak, all pretty mellow guys), so maybe a change would be good.

That could make sense.
The front office knows the personalities of the players and how they react better than we do. With so much of the roster already pretty much set heading into next year Jack can probably make a pretty good guess on what kind of personality would work best with the team in 2011 and going forward.

I think the whole thing comes down to how much faith you have in Z and the rest of the FO. I’m on their side for now, so if they want to hire Pee-Wee Herman, I’d say “if that’s what you think is best”.

Look at Joe Torre. He was a nobody as far as managers go when he got the Yankees job. Even HE was amazed that he was even interviewed.

does anyone know if the mariners are interviewing Daren Brown, or is it just given that they will give him an interview? Just out of curiosity, I don’t have a preference whether or not he will be the mariners next manager.
